I have 17hmr lever action ruger that i posted to trade on a gun website for something more powerful. After receiving 300 offers the first day i decided to test it out before trading. 17hmr is no joke. Definitely a keeper

The .17 HMR has proper rifle velocities and will go through stuff a handgun is stopped by.I shot some mild steel plate with a .357 Magnum,a .17 HMR,.22 Hornet and a 20 Gauge shotgun and the .357 was stopped leaving a big dent but both the rifles went through.Strangely enough the 20 gauge at point blank ripped a hole though even with bird shot but not a clean burn type hole like the .17 and .22.

That armor might technically stop the bullet, but on every shot the thing it was supposed to protect got broke in some way. If you were wearing that, and you got shot, you would get seriously messed up, broken ribs, damaged organs. You'd be on the ground, gasping for air, and whoever shot you the first time would just shoot you again.

@@Will-tn8kq I agree, most rounds would probably break a rib or at least knock the breath out of you. There are a few videos of people wearing similar vests being taking a round of 9mm.
It held up fine against pistol caliber rounds like the 22 magnum that went through it twice. It may not have gone completely through it, but would significantly have caused enough damage to your organs to kill you or at least remove you from any fight buy better armor.
Cool video. One thing it seems to show is there is a difference in bullet penetration depending on bullet construction. Bullet construction affects bullet expansion and expansion affects penetration. This can be seen in long range shooting when velocity slows down, penetration goes up because there is no expansion.
I have a hypothesis on your second and third test of the 17 HMR. I would assume it was because there wasn’t a solid backing to the armor. Since there was nothing firm for it to resist against, the Kevlar maybe acted as a “net” that could move with the bullet and catch it. I’ve seen this happen a few other times on other channels and one major difference is if the armor is backed or not.

Assuming about max 1000 fps with the .22lr from the pistol (the one that reverse-ejected from the armor), compared to the .22wmr from the rifle, you're looking at about 90 ft-lb energy vs. about 312 ft-lb energy, a 246% increase. That's a beautiful woods you have there. Love the coniferous forests.
If you think a 17 HMR is hard to stop it wonder how a 17 Remington would fair against body armor. It probably long forgotten but that means nobody else is doing it…lol!
the fmj penetrated because it had less velocity on your first shot. The second shot had too much velocity and deformed on impact causing less penetration.

Go to the gym and run with your steel plates or get military grade ceramic plates or perhaps Kevlar plates but a solid plate is going to be your best bet and your best bet is to fucking exercise so you can wear it

Idk how hard a brake rotor is compared to armor but I shot one with my 17 one time and it punched a hole in it from like 40-50 yards
