I think you need to fix your optics or how you shoot. Looks like to me your “flyer” was the only round that found the target, unless you were aiming for a specific square outside of the centers. The weapons are precise but the shooter must provide the accuracy. And looks like small game are safe from you at 50+ yards. They don’t get away from me at 100 meters with a .22. If I had a .17, I be laying them down @ 150-200 meters all day long. Also, dump the SFP scopes and go for FFP and higher magnification, like 24 or even 36. Less math equals less stress and with more zoom, smaller targets at greater ranges.

Thanks for watching! I've been so confused why people have been commenting about my poor shooting, but your comment finally made me realize why!
The scope on the gun is a temporarily setup for testing, so I didn't bother to properly zero it. When I am testing accuracy, I shoot groups to see what size I get. I don't care where they land on the paper. So, the bullseye doesn't matter to me, the shape of the group is the only important thing.
I apologize for not explaining that in the video, I assumed anyone who had done any target shooting would know what I was doing.

      @GryphonArmorer ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@TheOldFatDadGoober Gotcha. Makes sense, but you should always put your best foot forward. It shouldn’t take 30min to mount and zero a scope w/ 2 rounds. Then you don’t get goobers, rednecks, gun nuts and Marines yanking your chain. 🤪
But I’m serious about the FFP optics. 🤓😉😎 You’ll thank me.

@@GryphonArmorer I should put my best foot forward. Shooting youtube videos makes you forget these things.
Almost all my scopes are FFP, they are really nice for target shooting. If you watch my video coming this Monday you'll see a few. I've recently moved some FFP scopes off my hunting rifles though. The SFP reticles are easier to see through the whole magnification range.

The first time my dad and I took our Savage 17 out, we were shooting at paddle targets at 100 yards or so. We couldn't get it zeroed after a few mags, so we walked down to the target and found several tiny holes. The bullets were passing through the 1/4" steel without moving them or even making enough noise to hear.

True, 17 did't penetrate all the way through, but that means it transfered all it's energy to the target, size of the cavity is pretty good. If you look at the size of the cavity at 50, you see the damage really. well, 22 did exit, but that means it still had some energy, 17 transfered all to the target.

Paul I am only buying a 22WMR because I have a PMR already but let me tell you a cool story about the 17HMR . 11 years ago my cousins son who was 12 yrso sat down my son who was 11 at the time behind his little cricket single shot 17 HMR. Within in 5 minutes he had Daniel {my son} trained, dialed in on that rifle and with a $40 Wal-mart Bubbble pack scope and they both hitting the HOG sized silhouette at 300 yards. Incredible confidence builder for a young shooter!!! No adult had ANY interactions with the 2; this was 2 boys having fun and doing something they had no idea how incredible or hard it would have been with even a good 22lr and super velocity ammo.

Your experiences compare with mine. I've shot coyotes out to 150 yards +/- and dropped them super quick...sometimes right where they stood, other times they have run up to a max of 40 yards before dropping. Shot placement is critical. Small game requires a headshot if you want to eat any meat...body shots make critterburger, or an Andy Warholesque decoration. I never hunt with a .22 anymore due to the amount of times I have placed a good shot and had the critter disappear somewhere to die an ugly death. If I shoot something, I want it dead, not wounded.

Furthest Ground Squirrel so far has been 107yds. One of my first "tests" with it? I found an old spent 12ga cartridge out in the field and set it up on a log. Then walked back to a RangeFinder'd 80yds. Shot off those Qwik Stiks and sure enough! Hit it first try! Love the Hornady NTX 15.5gr loading! On Rabbits... one time taking a freehand shot at 60yds standing... I wanted to be more sure it'd hit so I allowed myself to drift more towards middle of body rather than the head/front shoulder region I usually do when setup on stix. The shot... quite literally... completely gutted him below the diaphragm and split open his pelvis!!! I was shocked! I have the ruger precision in 17 hmr and its my favorite rifle i own. Its stupid accurate at 100 yards. I can stack hits on top of each other on steel effortlessly. I hear a lot of people say it would not do anything significant to a human target..i beg to differ. Its so easy to place the shot accurately that head shots would be easy.

I used to hunt squirrels with my 22 and got sick of getting a lot of crawl aways . Since I got my 17, none have the ability to crawl away because their heads looked like those cans of dog food.

What you have to remember is the 17hmr is a necked down 22mag, the speed is causing bullet to explode. I have never had much luck with the heavier bullet in 17hmr giving me good accuracy, when shooting groundhogs I prefer to use hollow point bullets. When hunting small game I will use the ballistics tip bullets, I still cannot believe the amount of movement that occurs after you shoot a squirrel through the head incredible. I love the accuracy of the 17hmr, but if you want a quiet stone kill no extra movement stick to 22lr in standard velocity bullet squirrels drop and don't make a lot of noise in leaves. Try comparing 17hmr 25 grain bullet against 22mag in 40 grain see how they compare in clay block also instead of ballistics tip use hollow point bullets

  • @BuckeyeBallistics

The .17gr ballistic tips are generally more explosive inside 100 yards, but outside 100 the 20gr hollow points do more explosive damage (because they carry more energy further out and still expand). I'm not sure when, but at some point that ballistic tip stops expanding before the hollow point does. I used to shoot pest birds with mine at 150-200 yards and the 20gr hp's still made them go "pop" at 200- the .17gr bt's did not...
Also wind deflection is better with the .20gr, and therfore accuracy is better at distance due to this if there is any breeze at all. And lastly, the 20gr will penetrate a little further in most cases.
But regardless, .17hmr is a small game and varmint cartridge, whereas .22wmr can take on a little bit bigger game due to the deeper penetration (small deer & small hogs). That's my 2 cents for the algorithm...

Had to dispatch chickens several times, no exit wound and zero shrapnel but destroys what it hits quickly and efficiently. One of my favorite rounds. Please review your second shot with the 17, your entrance and exit were opposite of what you called out. Exit was the larger hole in the can, entrance was the smaller side.

I think the modeling clay should be done over. Glancing shots removed a lot of material on the side and gave the 2nd shot easier ability to go through due to a "thin wall". The .17 Glancing shot could have been a lot different with a center shot. Just like with the 100yd shot with .17 was at top edge and hardly did anything, but the 2nd shot blew the can apart because its centered. There are different forces and resistance on the surrounding material. A glancing shot allows the edge to blow out easy with the energy concentrated on blowing out the path of least resistance, while the side with more material is able to resist the forces trying to expand on that side. I think to get more accurate results, the shots have to be exact center for every shot, otherwise each shot is completely different depending on shot placement
