    Yes, it is a good game, cheap right now, and it somewhat helps you better understand the characters in TW3. For example, when you play TW3, there will be a scene where you are being cleaned and asked to answer questions about Geralt's past. If you did not play TW2, you will have no idea wtf these questions are asking lol. Also, you will know more about important characters such as Triss Merigold and Vernon Roche

      To be fair, though, you only get asked these questions in W3 only if you choose to simulate a W2 save, you won't if you choose not to.
      That said, though, the lore in W2 gives context to a lot of things in W3, and the game itself is amazing, so definitely worth a play

      if you go into witcher 1 with an action rpg mindset,you will not enjoy it. i know it cuz didnt enjoy it that much until chapter 2. once you understand that its an RPG game with a rythm based action elements. then it gets muuch better. as for witcher 2.i think they tried to LOOK like an action rpg while still retaining witcher 1's clunkiness in mechanics. as someone who relies on visuals for almost everything(dark souls taught me that) witcher 2 was the total drag game for me. it was soo clunky and unresponsive.

    Definitely still worth playing even without mods. In my opinion, the storyline is better than Witcher 3. The graphics still holds up and looks good. @@mingQWERTY I think it's a matter of taste. W3 was more personal - Geralt looking for his daughter, reconnecting with his lifelong partner, putting an end to the saga spanning from the books.
      W2 was about the Witcher world. The politics, the scheeming, the shape of the land. Some like that macro stuff better than the micro.
      W1 managed to balance the two relatively well story-wise, owing a lot to the fact that they chose to give Geralt a clean slate and not fill any blanks.

    I played this in 2021 and couldn't believe how well it holds up. I played it on the xbox one x and it's enhanced and looks really great. The choices you have to make are fantastic. At least 3 times I had to put the controller down and stop and think "OMG what I am going to do". In addition the world feels really genuine and alive. The civilians are in the bar or on the streets chatting about world events or local events. It's all in context. The civilians have relevant animations. It makes the world believable, immersive and engaging. After playing Witcher 2 all the way through, I immediately started playing again to make different choices. These totally affect the story and what missions you do. I love choice and consequence like this as it makes the game YOUR story. In terms of the game world and choice it's pretty hard to believe that the same developers created Cyberpunk.
    BUT I would NOT recommend Witcher 1. That game still crashes frequently, is frustrating as hell, wastes your time going backwards and forwards again and again and although it's nice to get acquainted with the Witcher world, there is not much relevant story that relates to subsequent games in my opinion. You mostly just learn what a Witcher is and how they operate. You meet some of the main Witcher characters but you don't learn much about them. The focus on making great characters comes in Witcher 2 and all future games including Cyberpunk. They are world class at making memorable characters.

      I always cringe and get a bit frustrated with people who compare the Witcher games to Bethesda's games. They're completely different types of game. The Witcher games are story-driven "RPGlites" (a term I use, inspired by "roguelite") and the third game integrated some open world sandbox fun into the mix. Meanwhile, Bethesda's games have always been sandbox games where freedom and the ability to live another life in another world is the key point to the game. I love both, though I prefer Bethesda's style overall.
      I don't believe that it was so much that this game stayed in Skyrim's shadow. I vividly remember people talking about this back then as a masterpiece of a story-driven adventure/RPG game. It didn't receive a huge amount of recognition because, at that point, the franchise was still relatively niche and the narrative RPG fans were more focused on games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I've always said, even back when I was still skeptical of CDPR and the Witcher franchise (which was stupid, in hindsight), that I felt like Dragon Age was a lot closer of a comparison for these games than Bethesda's games are.

    • @jakobfel2
      @jakobfel2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheIneptFox Everyone is entitled to their opinion but let's at least be fair: it was not a "kids' RPG". It had every definining core trait of an RPG. Every TES game excluding the 90s spinoff, Redguard, meets every core traits of an RPG.

    • @jakobfel2
      @jakobfel2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheIneptFox That's not a fair comparison, though. PoE/Divinity/BG, those are all narrative-driven tactical RPGs. They have a specific way they play. Skyrim is a sandbox RPG; its very nature allows people to play it however they want. Ergo, kids will find it a lot easier to play that kind of RPG because they can play it how they want to play it.

The first being it came out on PC first then got a remaster for Xbox 360 and PC, the second it has real feeling and heart which I think The Witcher 3 lacks a bit of, but not completely of course. I'd say lot of what earned CDPR their credit was ability to listen and actually react.
    I had W2 in preorder and in polish, so basically 2 weeks before official premiere. I didn't work at all.
    Then was the issue of horrible fighting style, lackluster signs and alchemy influencing close to nothing.
    Also the final act that was like half of something.
    But they listened.
    W1 was what we consider now a kickstarter project, with its issues and lot of hard work.
    W2 was ambitious as hell and for me- it was playable (enjoyably) like 2-3 months after launch. Same with W3...
    This reminds me most ambicious of their projects, the CP2077...
    Each time they brought what they could best and then improved it.

Silly me, those kinds of scenes are usually 100% CGI and just give false hope... but The Witcher 2 actually delivered an amazing looking game an introduced me to an amazing new world (and book series).
    I happily played on my small laptop on lowest settings at like 20fps until I eagerly bought and put together a proper gaming PC... parts of which I'm still using today!
    The game was brutally difficult at first but they must have toned it down a notch with some patches because I swear I died like 50+ times before I got to Flotsam my first time, but then playing it later was as piece of cake by comparison (that fire boss was always a pain though...).

    The first time I played this game (after witcher 3), I genuinely felt so overwhelmed by what had happened in such a small space of time I had no idea what the story was about. Probably because Witcher 3 is much less linear and padded out and longer, this game is very linear in comparison and packs a very dense narrative.
    The more I play it, the better it gets. I’m on another play through atm, and chapter 1 has been maybe my favourite part of the game. Iorveths chapter 2 is wicked, and I wanna play again as it’s been years since I’ve gone through roches path. It’s an amazing game and sets up the 3rd game very well.

    As someone, that only recently started playing the Witcher games for the first time, I can see that the W2 story and the way it tells that story is good. Graphics wise it still holds up, but mechanically it is very old and very clunky, GUI and inventory system is not very intuitive. Alchemy is also a bit of a mixed bag, but makes sense from a lore perspective.
    So if you can stick with the clunkiness of the game you are in for a really good story.

    I was told about the Witcher from a friend while we where playing ESO and they said I would like it then I saw that 3 was on game pass so I loaded it up started playing and then the game asked if I wanted to use my choices from the 2nd game so naturally I bought the 2nd after few hours of playing 3 and learning a little about the characters and their impact of the story so I deleted my game saves and played all the way through 2

    Get ya the High Texture pack, the Extreme Vegetation pack and the Vergen grass fix and you're good. Heck, even vanilla the game holds up. I really love the unique 2 part nature of the game. You truly can't see the entire game the first playthrough. You literally miss the entire center half of the game depending on which side you choose. Brilliant. Though has it downfalls.

    I kinda prefer this game to 3. Though I've not done everything in the game so that may change. I just prefer the combat and I actually felt like I knew what I was supposed to be doing. Though that also may just stem from me not liking open world games that much.

  • @twinmama42
    @twinmama42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love TW2 despite the Kayran, despite the awful alchemy system (not brewing potions or oils but applying them in context with cutscenes, either skip the cutscenes or run out of your potions before the fight even starts), despite the combat (I really liked TW1 combat, though I only played the prologue once. I haven't played the full game yet because I can't get audio - no music, no ambiance, no dialogues), because its story is (or rather two stories are) so good. Whereas TW1 was gathering the mood of the short stories, TW2 was the continuation of the political plotline of the Ciri novels and TW3 told the more personal story of a family of 3 (Ciri, Geralt, Yen). I still prefer TW3 as I'm not a very profound player (call me a noob and I won't be offended), which didn't have such sparks in difficulty as TW2 with the Kayran and the Draugr.
    The game is very well playable and enjoyable in 2021. It doesn't look like a game of two console generations ago. If it wasn't for TW3 as a comparison, it could have come out in 2019 and still nobody would say its graphics were bad. The story is well grounded in the lore but it even works without any prior knowledge of the world of The Witcher. And the music, ah the music, it's so beautiful. I love all the soundtracks of games, they are the only game soundtracks I can listen to in an endless loop. With most other games, there are a few tracks that are great. Then there are a few that work perfectly inside the game but on their own, they are unpleasant or boring to listen to. But not so with The Witcher (including Thronebreaker) music.
    TW2 is still a recommendation. And TW1 should get a remake for modern machines.

    • @tarron3237
      @tarron3237 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just finished TW1 EE with mods, and yes, a modern remake would be nice. But I could enjoy it anyways.

    • @twinmama42
      @twinmama42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tarron3237 Yes, the alchemy system of TW1 was the best of the three games as it made the most sense (for me anyway as one of my majors in high school was chemistry). Even closer to actual chemistry is the alchemy system of Kingdom Come Deliverance, it's as tedious as actual chemistry work in a lab.

    So I never got to play witcher 2 or 3. At the time of the releases I was a full on online multiplayer simp. And lost all interest in single player games. After waiting season 1 on netflix I was intrigued, so I went away and read some of the books. And now I have picked both games up for my series x for under 10pounds with boxing day sales online so cheap. I cannot wait to get into both titles as I've got older my focus has left multiplayer and fallen back to playing amazing single player titles which these days are few and far between I really hope witcher 2 and 3 hold up to the hype as I found cyberpunk lacking.

    Despite the combat in witcher 1 my favourite part of the game is how conclusive each chapter feels by forcing you to talk to most people in the area before progressing to next chapter making to you feel made the most of the section and by also paying off your hard work like having the witch sub-plot have the people in the outskirts of vizima all team up and blame the curse on the witch while geralt is forced to resolve this to get a pass or the Raymond investigation from chapter 2 . Although loved almost every aspect of the witcher 2 I can't help but feel a little empty when leaving flotsam only to realise majority of this games contact was optional whereas witcher 1 side quest were simply contracts rewarding the player for studying and hunting monsters.

      Dude I played 3 first and I love it best game I've ever played . So I bought the second game and tried playing it on 2 separate occasions and I just can't. It's so boring and not fun. The map is no help so your always lost trying to do any side quests quests the game isn't really open world so you hit invisible walls alot. It's just completely different feeling and look. Everything looks grainy and grey and it's simply not fun to me. It's nothing like the 3rd game. Everyone leaving these glowing comments are looking at the game thru rose tinted glasses for whatever reasons but honestly if a games isn't fun to play it's not worth your time regardless of your love for the lore. Sorry much love to cdpr

      I'm assuming you got to the Kayran and got bored. It is common to get annoyed at the Kayran part.
      But to me once you leave flotsam the game is brilliant.
      The only problem I have with it, is that it's way too short. You don't want to rush through the main quests. Do as many side quests as you can before leaving an area.

    In terms of gameplay I actually like TW2 the least: the combat, UI, and potion mechanics are so janky. For those reasons I do not get the urge to replay the game. I'd sooner replay TW1 (the soundtrack on that one is soo nostalgic, the atmosphere of the Outskirts of Vizima and Act 4). Hell, I admit I even went through TW2 on easy mode cos I had such a hard time adjusting.
    That being said, I fully praise TW2 for it's story, the characters, the divergent plotlines. The dark, unrelenting atmosphere of cruelty and loss really had me, the backroom manipulation of events by the Sorceresses, the ominous set-up of Nilfgaard and the Wild Hunt, Roche and Zoltan's story arcs, King Henselt was great. The side quests were in-depth and made the most of the lore and surrounding story events.
    Personally, I've only played the Roche path. If I ever was to play it again I'd choose Iorveth.
