Thanks very much, I appreciate the feedback and support. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for the feedback Sam. I will pop the UT61E on the bench for review as soon as it arrives. Cheers, Martin.
No worries, I appreciate your support. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for the feedback...interesting...I know some meters are set to stay active if there is a certain change in digit count...but that sounds a bit high end for this one...I might test that myself. Cheers.
Thanks Martin. I ordered this via your amazon store. thanks for the informative review.
Thanks for the feedback. The "slate" is a little dated now but it's a Samsung Q1 Ultra.
Thanks man. I got this multimeter because of your video.
Thanks for picking that up...good tip. Cheers, Martin.
thanks for the detailed review. just bought one through your amazon link
The RS232 power consumption is the reason I modified my UT61E recently. They designed it with RS232 hard on, which also disables APO. A little fiddly soldering, a phototransistor, and a cut trace, and it turns on when the cable is inserted.
The UT71E looks like a nice piece of kit. I have the UT61E on the way so I will add the 71 to my "to do" list. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for trying to use my store...I get very frustrated with their shipping policies to South Africa....but I'm surprised to see it's the same for many parts of Europe as well. Cheers, Martin.
Hi - Interesting review ... by the way, it's identical from front panel, pcb layout and specs to my Digitek QM1538 bought from Jaycar in September 2002 for AU$69.99!.
I analyzed the serial output with a view top creating a Delphi control for it and was quite supprised to find that it was a bit mapping of every drivable segment on the LCD display rather than any numeric data - actually quite clever as it includes the DMM settings and range with the measurement (sorry i don't still have the mapping but it wasn't too hard to figure out).
Note that holding down the RS232 key at power on toggles its initial state.
From what I found on the internet, it actually output the status of each segment of the LCD as 1 if on and 0 if off. More details can be found on the QtDMM website.
Tom
Thanks Sam. If you have the time...please do the comparison, you may well pick up things that I don't...and I've enjoyed your video productions. Cheers, Martin.
thanks... an excellent review... and more. I've ordered the TP8236 ( $59 US ) which has a true usb 2.0 data input connector. I initially plan to use it with my Dell Win 10 laptop to capture 12 VDC battery voltage and current on my camping trailer when using a solar cell panel...Hope it works as well as the model TP4000... So, if don't mind the added resolution, would that be an equal competitor for the UT61E? Maybe the built quality makes the difference?
Thanks, I will keep that in mind.
Yes, some of the Metrix MTX models have bluetooth.
@Monkeh616 I read that the chipset to select with QtDMM for this multimeter is "Voltcraft VC 820"
Thanks, for the video. I bought the Digitek DT-4000ZC from Franky on ebay. It is not very accurate. I checked a car battery and it showed 12.7 and a known good meter showed 12.5. The accuracy varies across the scale. What do you recommend I do? Should I send it back or can I can I fix it?
link to software anyone ?
I'm not sure but I know custom code can be written to read the output.
Is the LCD capable of being backlit?
Tom
Even thou it is not listed, I have found reports on the internet of using this software with this meter. The particular report was someone using it on a Mac. As I noted it only runs on Mac and Linux OS. Maybe Martin will try it out for us.
Tom
thanks very much for this!
Hi, I've just seen your comment from Pt1 too. Unfortunately I have no control over where Amazon will or won't ship. They don't ship many electronic items to South Africa...and I only know that once I put them in my cart. I'm very sorry but thanks for trying. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks man !!! That is a usefull tip !
Hi martin, nice show again.
Can you take a look at the UNI-T 71E.
Maybe do a review on that meter
High Martin good video again, but when are you going to remember that the HZ setting is meant for audio and other low voltages and if you want to measure the mains frequency you do it while on the AC voltage setting, that's why the blue marking on the switch.
Thanks, appreciate your efforts...I might look at using ebay as an affiliate as well to get around some of the shipping issues with Amazon. Cheers, Martin.
I haven't found an update. Did find a cheesy logger that saved the data to CSV for import into Excel, Open Office or other spreadsheet. Can't seem to find the download page at the moment, if you want it, I'll make more of an effort to locate it.
The RS232 connection is optoisolated inside the meter, see the first part of the review.
I need a multimeter that can accurately measure peak voltage spikes from motorcycle stators while they are being kicked over. Can one such as this accurately measure AC voltage spikes at around 60hz +/- (kickstarting at 800rpm) when set on the min/max function?
great review. Does this ship from amazon to norway?
Fantastic Thanks !!
Can multiple meters be triggered together to take the data at a given moment(s)?
Brilliant review! Thanks!
Great review..
Whats the model name of the samusng slate??
Excellent review, Martin. About the Auto-Off, I used this DMM to monitor (no logging) the DC current while discharging the battery in my hybrid car. Didn't disable Auto-Off but the DMM stayed on for the entire 4+ hours of the discharge cycle. Perhaps if the measured quantity is changing it won't shut off. Just a theory...
The spikes you're seeing seem to be due to the meter producing an OL reading before it autoranges up. Presumably in manual range this wouldn't happen, so you probably want to use manual range for datalogging tasks.
Just a note, Martin, you may want to try the low battery test in resistance rather than voltage.
It is possible to send an RS232 command to get an immediate reading?
Hi I have been looking for a talking multi meter and Level and saw your video. Are you still selling these products
How many data points per second can it log?
I did some research and there is a another free software package that will work with this and many other device similar to this one. It is written for Mac and Linux OS. The name is QtDMM.
Tom
I'm having a hell of a time getting this to work under Windows 7 and a Prolific USB to serial adapter. Is there an updated version of the software from the manufacturer or am I totally missing something?
There's a tool called UltraDMM currently being developed over on the EEVBlog forum. Presently for Windows, I have asked him to look into making it crossplatform. Just need to figure out what protocol a meter uses and he'll get it working.
Getting me one for school and rc hobby
It's been nearly five years since this was done. How about an Update !
Hi,
Really like the DMM, sadly tried to order through your store, and with amazon direct but they wont ship to the UK. Grrrr!
Update: Through trial and error I've found that disabling the RS232 output will engage the Auto-Off. It doesn't matter if there is a PC connection or not, as long as the RS232 is active the DMM will not automatically turn off.
That software looks kinda nice :).
I wanted to like this one and goofily wanted to buy one even kinda cause it looks like the 87V and I like the look of it-lol- Its great that it has the data logging at this price but my nitpick is $30 and no backlight-?- Also its the only meter ive seen with temp function that didnt support both C* and F*, we went to the moon over 50 years ago seems to me a backlight and F* would be no problem as I have seen many $15 - $20 meters with both features . The pc board is nothing to write home about with minimal to no input protection and fusing, and I saw quite a few electrolytic caps and knowing how these always fail or change value how long before accuracy is affected by these caps. I will say though in your tests this meter showed very good accuracy for its price range, but my own nitpicks aside as you said I have to admit in 2012 when this video was published this meter would have been even more of a bargain than today in 2018 - but today there are others around this price with better build quality that might be worth looking at. Im childishly still fascinated with their attempt to style it to loosely resemble the 87V-lol
Dear Martin, thanks for the excellent review for this awesome and cheap device!
I am a click away from ordering it, and just want to know the maximum frequency it can measure. I am doing some high frequency circuit, and would like to measure frequencies from hundreds of KHz up to around 15 MHz.
Thanks!
Perhaps an LED back-light hack...
I'd like to be able to data log in the field w/o having to have a PC connected. But it looks like it basically has a PC interface and uses the PC for the actual data logging. Right?
Too bad they didn't offer an Android interface.
Wow it could easily cost 2x that and still be a good bye! :-)
I kan see that the is an old review, can you please tell me if there exists a more recent model of that meter?
The QtDMM website does not list this meter. There are numerous protocols and so far, nobody has confirmed the chipset in use.
You measure Mains Voltage, Hz and Duty cycle in this video. Could this multimeter measure mains current. I see it's rate 4/10 A for AC current. So could I measure AC current on a 220v system with say a fridge rated at 5 amps/1.1 kw?
What exactly does 4/10 A mean? A min of 4 and a max of 10 amps? If so why is there a minimum measurement of 4 A which is quite high?
Regards
Mark
Hi, can you please check this out. Metravi 901 IV digital multimeter. If you could have put a review on it would be grateful. Thanks
you WIN!
thanks!
Thanks Ali...sorry, mine is in a container on the way here to the US...I would test it otherwise...Cheers, Martin.
Oh, so useful.
Very nice vids, thank's to u just bought one.
My pleasure, thanks for the feedback.
I see one minor annoyance for people in that states. No way to select temperature in degrees F.
Tom
I got very lucky and discovered a piece of software that works perfectly under Windows. It's CLI based but dumps out CSV files no problem. It's called QM1538Logger.
i going to get one to check it out. guys got them on ebay usa for 37 free ship
For Belgium the same thing : 'We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination' Pitty.
Well, I still don't like the location. Nice to have something which doesn't use a proprietary connector, though..
Please feel free to enlighten us with details of the chipset and protocol, then.
The platform doesn't matter.
Don't forget that this has AA batteries so more current chewed
sorry i am not getting it through your amazon store they charge tax to ship to texas...again sorry.
Too cheap to pay taxes. I love it.
At inflated prices.
yea sorry, here in the states we have this strange concept of whats mine is mine and not the governments! I am a robot if the government says do it, I WILL! Crazy uhn!
