Your reviews have to be some of the best I have ever come across, I read reviews on anything I buy, from pencils to cars and multimeters.
I bought this meter a couple months ago but before I had heard anything about it. Your videos have been very informative and now it feels good to know that, for my hobby electronics, I made a very good purchase. I have watched several of your videos in the past year and must say that you are very articulate and thorough. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure about the resistance calibration but I will take a closer look as I plan to calibrate the AC voltage. Will post a video on that as soon as time allows. Cheers, Martin.
Fantastic review and guide to calibrating. I just calibrated my Uni-T 61E and it is now spot on. Thanks so much.
To reduce internal voltage reference variations, replace R15 with 100k/1% resistor. This alteration result in mid point adjust in mult turn pot, equalizing temperature variations.
End part 4... I just watched a 1 hour and 41 minute review on one single multi-meter.
For Christ sake I just went to ebay and bought the thing , What could I do. Had to make it worth the watch.
I have seen shorter movies.
I read a couple of reviews and my dad recommended me this since I'm a beginner in electronics. Then I purchased it on Amazon and AFTER that I started watching this. LOL Your way of doing things is the better one. XD
Thank you Martin for the extensive review.
I'm very proud of myself that I had the courage to decide on UT61E years ago when Dave reviewed the 61D in his shootout. Even then he was biased against 61D, because Uni-T was not a popular brand.
A week or so after I ordered mine, the EEVblog thread popped & confirmed I made a good decision, it's a great meter (for the price point). You solidified it.
Besides what you mentioned, there's also the minor issue of DC on AC measurement and dirty probes.
This particular meter was calibrated around July, according to the date stamp on the warranty card, if I remember correctly from one of Martin's previous videos.
Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me if the factory or office where it was calibrated was slightly warmer than usual, when the meter was calibrated. The meter did go up a bit in the hot box.
Or maybe they just got it within 0.1% and stopped there. As Martin showed, it can require a bit of finesse to get it exactly right.
Thanks for the feedback...and yes...the taser will be brought out for some fun soon..
I would recommend you plot the temperature drift for the meters to have some hard data to compare between meters. for instance for 5V, so you plot voltage vs temperature. a couple of points should be enough.
that will get you some hard data to compare so it doesn't have to rely on distant impressions and it can also be presented visually so it is immediately apparent how meters compare.
I may have to get such a voltage reference for my meter so I know it matches fluke87 for 60$ :)
Outstandingly thorough, thanks very much
I paid $36.66 on eBay (April, 2018)... Fantastic meter! 👍
I ordered my UT61 from 99centHobbies ebay store. Exellent DMM for DIY. The only drawbacks: not the best test leads - I replaced by fine tipped leads, no carryng cace, but from the same 99centHobbies some good cases available, no backlight - I decided to mod my DMM, but without impact functionality or exterior of my DMM.
Searh " UNI-T UT61E DMM Backlight via sensor control " to see result = )
Martin .. Thank you for excellent review, you help a lot to a lot of people !
You should not use a metal screw driver when adjusting the pot (same reason as when trimming a scope probe), just a matter of principle, since you are potentially interfering with the parasitic capacitance. The chance of messing up a DC measurement calibration in this case is small though.
Yup...agreed...I mention that point in a later video. Thanks for the post.
Don't forget there's the Pauli effect to think about;-)
I tried to calibrate a cheap multimeter of mine and I calibrated it with pot. to a spot on reading on the 2v range and then the other ones drifted and reason is that the actual resistors inside are not in spec. Nice vid. Martin :)
hmm, just had a thought. clever ebay sellers could do the calibration and sell them as calibrated for a few dollars more. would be well worth it unless they drift dramatically over time.
Meins ist gerade auf dem Weg. Wer ein bisschen Wartezeit verschmerzen kann bekommt mit dem UT61E aus China wohl ein überragendes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Ich hab jedenfalls Zeit :D
Thanks Martin, will watch later on.
Thanks for the great review. Just ordered mine today =).
Excellent.... I swore I'd wouldn't watch the 4th part but you would go and show how to calibrate it and give it an extreme temperature test LOL. Now.... if we could just get CERN and SLAC to answer a "few" questions about a certain set of data matching (v-c)/c=2.48e-5 sec in 453.6 miles and explain BaBar's sigma 14 dealing with the asymmetry in time the E158 data ration exposed we might just end up setting the clock connecting us to the Universe. But we'll need a tight cable.
WOW... I just figured it out! Do you know why CERN ended up with a loose cable? It's so obvious... Sommerfeld let go of it! What's amazing is he must have let go of it in 1948.... hummm Looking at a speed of light clock sure can confuse a lot of smart people.
Do you know why the apple fell on Newton's head? It had a worm hole in it: e{a}/t=hv
Yeach, use that old multimeter for measuring that taser or something, or maybe the viewers has some other ideas. Something for fun or whatever.
And great video again. We are spoiled :-)
Some good info. Looks like it's not all that temperature stable and although it's within spec out of the box there is a lot of accuracy to be gained by a calibration. Really a shame they don't do that from factory since it would be largely free to do. But they might start doing that now that there is awareness of it. This community stuff can be quite powerful. Dave Jones has made several companies scared for instance :)
Thanks for the very detailed review Martin. I've been looking for a good MM for my limited hobby needs and this one ought to fill the bill just right. Was looking at Flukes but for my needs I think this one will do just nicely. Now I'm off to either find a good set of leads or modify the ones that come with the UT61E. I have silicone wire so I'm hoping to upgrade the wires that come with the 61E.
I have bought this dmm. It's not bad. If diagram of this dmm is correct lp filter should kick in at 1 kHz but I tried it up to 24 kHz sin. without any problem with maybe +1.5% error!? Bargraph is very fast. There are few options on dmm's chip that are unused like backlight, min/max (it's not same as peak), 1kHz lp filter and temp. measuring!!!
i use my 61e and 61b (on my work) for 400V, and dont any problems, but recently i damage my 61e in impulsive power supply, analoge TV - since im from Ukraine, and we still have this crap =). 61e really have are bad protection on high voltage, but anywere price 43$ solves everything =) I can not afford a fluke (177, 289), with a salary of $ 200
First of all I wish to thank you for the great videos that you made. Thanks to you I bought this multimeter and I am very pleased however when I want to measure ac voltage my multimeter is 11 volts off. Is there any chance that you can make a calibration video of AC voltage? Greetings from Serbia :)
What is your reference voltage source and how know that is out of measurement ?
Of course it's very out! You brought it way out of it's accuracy temperature spec.
At least UNI-T is very honest
thanks
Ut61e how to fix capacitor value and
Which are verable rasistor to fix value of capacitor
Hola muy buenas soy electricista y me gustaría comprarme un multímetro fluke 87V que le parece a usted o me recomienda otro para mí profesión
Would you p,ease be able to suggest an all purpose multimeter that includes capacistor measurements. Thanks
I've got a stupid question and if someone could answer it , it would be much appreciated.
With UNI-T multimeters does a higher model number indicate that it's a more advanced or better meter than a lower model number ?
For example - is a UNI-T UT61E better than a UNI-T UT139C
Number doesn't say if it is better or worth. These two models are for different domains. 139 is more for electricians working on main lines. 61 is more for electronics. It can be used on main home lines too. 139 has NVC, Clump mode for example. 61E is different from 61A,b,c,d. Here letter says that E is more advanced. 61E is more accurate. It has 22000 display. Others 6000 and 9000. 61 has analog scale which is very nice.
Thanks but the Multimeter no auto power off
Hello, VC99 is not true-rms so the comparision is not good.
I got mine.... 👊👍😁
what do you think about UNI T UT60A, or SANWA CD771?
DMM Check is discontinued, what now to use ?
50$ ? here in germany it costs 104$ (80€) -.-
I have a ut60e and every time I put in the temperature probe it does not picks it up and measures the internal temperature. The probe is fine and measures 12ohms. Is there another setting I need to make?
+Adrian Gavrila Might want to check the ohms. 12 ohms seems a little low for a temperature probe. to test it, it should increase in ohms at colder temps and decrease in ohms in warmer temps. A simple thermistor.
UT60H big brother with bad Accuracy
habs mir bei ebay für 43 aus china bestellt und hab dazu noch 4€ rückerstattung für den langen versand zurück bekommen xD
43€ in der Bucht. Natürlich aus China.
