Fun fact: Tsukuba Circuit (the second stage) exists in real life. The shibuya (4th) circuit could also be recreated IRL. Pretty sure the highway loop in the 1st stage is fictional (but Ariake does exist) And IDK if the Hakone layout mimics the real life road (I'd be impressed if that road under the waterfall really exists tho)
These were the first 3d graphics attempts to render the Japanese racing culture and industry so the point to point mountain or Touge racing is there as well as the Japanese GT circuit before they were renamed to the Japan Super GT Circuit or championship. Basically Genki via Pack In Video made the Sega Saturn Wangan Dead Heat which iirc was released in late 1995 Japan for Sega Saturn and was limited by Genki's knowledge and experience at making 3d racing (aka they were still very new so the game seems primitive on Sega Saturn) and Wangan Dead Heat was about Japanese high way and city racing. Jaleco gets a hold of Sega Model 2C and they can make a super powered leap in that genre... Later Konami made their own game but with super expensive 3d hardware that was hardly purchased by any American arcade operators.
They have twin Star Wars Episode 1 Racer machines at Skylon Tower, and in the demo Anikin's podracer keeps crashing into stuff much like that car in Over Rev's demo. It might be an emulation thing in Over Rev's case but it's a funny coincidence.
the FOV and track design stuff make it look a lot like a Ridge Racer to me, even before the helicopter comes into the screen, looks very neat tho, never seen this one in the wild, makes me hope even more for a Model2 FPGA core now 🙃
The field of view eventually is a copy of Virtua Racing 1992 which featured FOUR different 3d perspectives... Namco's Ridge Racer had a slight evolution over their 1988 3d racer that ran on a super expensive 3d graphics hardware that used dual CPUs. The helicopter and any other flying objects were not just the game devs showing off what the hardware could do but they were attempting to replicate what you might see at a racing event or broadcast cause they did have helicopters with cameras to capture as much of the action as possible.
For reference the racing genre touge is pronounced like Tō-gē, or Toe (like the ones on your feet) geh(like you're saying 'get' without the 't'), with emphasis on that first syllable.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Japanese Romanisation, not English Romanisation. You can never apply the same phonetic rules from one language to another, the Latin alphabet is notoriously bad for that.
I remember long ago finding this cabinet and played the hell out of the Championship. Sadly stuck on the last race many times, which is just sad, but never found out about the secret cars yet. Sadly at the same place years later the cab is gone. Will miss this game dearly.
This era of racing games is still my favorite after all these years. Even though the graphics have evolved I still find the 32-64 bit era arcade games to be the most charming and the best in terms of how it feels.
I think they would mix the sound effects so loud on purpose because the high frequency noises would penetrate the noisy arcades more. Outside of that environment it is very annoying Jaleco made a lot of sprite scaling racers that looked incredible also
@@VideoGameEsoterica thinking about it i do not remember their games in the arcades.. at least not here in italy or in places i visited in the 90s (france, spain, greece,...). Maybe they did not bet on the foreign market enough to be noticed
@@VideoGameEsoterica Actually, 64th Street is quite good. I just grew up with limited funds so it was always Capcom, Konami, Nintendo, Taito, Irem, Sega and that was about it. A poor purchase was a major disaster so I didn't take chances.
It's pronounced "toe-gay," although part of me always wants to call it "touge." I really like all of the banner ads and whatnot on that last level. I'm still not sure what "My darling..." means.
If a game is better or worse than another game is a very simple logical proof. Does the comparison have Mitsuyoshi Takenobu singing? If not? Then the game without is worse. If both are without, then it gets trickier, and if both are with it also gets trickier. But any game with Mitsuyoshi singing is by default better. It's just logic! Even Vulcans can agree to that logic. Also: Is that Donald Duck's cousin: Sam Seagull? Albert Albatross?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Well, it isn't a SEGA Racer without him singing. Sure Outrun and Virtua Racer exist... but after Daytona and SEGA Rally? Can we really do without? :P
The tyre squealing and collisions remind me of ridge racer and not in a good way. And the car textures and models are very flat not as good as daytona. But I do love aracde racers so well check it out when ican
As good? Not according to RetroCore. I think he featured this in a BOTP video (under a different name) and it was meh, borderline bad, for him. The home port didn’t help either. JALECO was a company that was never consistent with quality, they could deliver a masterpiece one day and a total bomb a few days later. It was weird.

A Model 2 FPGA core would be great considering software emulation is basically stalled

yeah same with system22 which is mostly abandonned for 15 years... what a shame
Namco had some fun hardware. I’ve got a new Konami 3D pcb out for delivery today too. A rare one

very cool finding these retro racing gems

I’ll try to remember that. Def not how you’d sound it out

And I’m bad at foreign language. Only class in any front I got less than an A in. My brain isn’t made for it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes it is. They just teach everyone the wrong way.
Well I mean what can you do. It was the late 90s
"It's COOOOOL!" I always found that line funny
Very “let’s use common English phrases we know” vibes
Going from GT24 to overrev is a night and day difference. Though I don't think this game was very common in it's day.
No def not common. Which makes it all the more fun
You’ve done it baby!
You’re the Greatest!
Shut up baby I know it
Never heard of this, looks great. I own a Nissan 300zx so always have a soft spot for games that you can drive one in. You are indeed the greatest!
Ooh fun car to have
I was playing it a few weeks ago fun game and the tracks and playability remind of Daytona.
It’s basically Daytona except from Jaleco in all the best ways
Looks amazing I'd never heard of this game. Thanks 👍
I had a feeling a decent amount of people would have not known about it :)

It’s hard to beat the last race. You’ve gotta basically race perfectly

I miss the CHONKY cars with super bright colors and over the top animations
Me too. This era was my fav
I feel like texture-filtering + a little artistically fine-tuning in the choice of colors would have worked wonders on this game. :)
It’s not as vibrant of a Sega game but it’s close
Great Video! i am happy to find your channel! I am a big fan of old arcade games so....new subscriber here!
Glad you found it!
Thinking of doing a live stream in the future VGE. I would love to be part of the hat section posting away for sure bro. 8^)
Anthony...
You did it it baby, you are the GOAT
Haha the game knows I’m the best
Never see AM2 Game With tuner cars this definitely need to play after I have steering wheel
You 100% have to play it :)
Yeah btw is daytona usa deluxe better than original daytona usa ?
It’s been forever since I played the PC version so honestly I’d just be guessing
I see you have many consoles, what best console you have maybe can be a good recommendation for me
Just depends on what kind of games you want to play?

That’s my one issue with retro arcade games. Audio balance
Jaleco does not get the credit it deserve. Games by them such as psychic 5, avenging spirit and chimera beast are really good and creative
They really don’t. They made some hits and nobody really even remembers their name

Well that's a coincidence, I just set up a full Model 2 set in Launchbox last night 😂
Haha good timing

That’s what I’m here for!
Jaleco can be a coin toss of competent/janky output but this looks really good with a lot of polish🤟🏻

I've never been a JALECO fan. The Rushing Beat series is quite good. This does look like one of their best.
They are solid B tier but the best of the B tier IMO

I think B tier is too generous. C tier. Still, a mediocre company can have a good day and make a good game.
I just kind of like their art style which lifts them up imo

Any recommendations for a wheel for these Arcade racers on PC?
Logitech g920
You left out the reason Daytona is the best: The theme song.
Yes I mean that can’t be beat
is it possible to set up local multiplayer via emulation? like what it is possible on model 3 emulator (supermodel) or via teknoparrot?
