I grew up in Indianapolis, and that machine was everywhere! Even one of the big motion rig machines, with an arcade employee as the commentator. I have it on my PC Model 2 emulator and love it with a wheel, in cockpit view, and on a big screen TV. 🏁🏁🇯🇵🇺🇸
Sega arcade racers are just so special. Daytona, Indy and Super GT are just a blast and are drop ded gorgeous... When I win the lottery I plan to have one of each cab in my office

Near where i live they got a huge arcade with 4 indy 500 cabinets linked up(national videogame museum, zoetermeer). Spend a full hour try to beat each other, lotsa fun!
I used to read every magazine I could find and online reviews with the internet. I remember an essay on this game and how it's ''failure'' in arcades had a big impact on Sega.
Love this game. The sense of speed is incredible, often lost on modern racing games. It provides a sense of urgency to every corner and overtake, it never let's up.
Think I actually got to play both the regular and deluxe cabs of this as a young'um. Definitely a cool-ass racing game and the rare Arcade Indycar game (given that the rest of the Indycar games were PC ones I believe).
loved this and scud race at my local scandia fun center. so sad this was never ported home to the saturn or even dreamcast. Would love to see a sega arcade compilation for the switch where it gets the same attention that virtua racer and gloc received
I came across this cabinet just one time in my life, was probably 20+ years ago. Of course I played it, and it was awesome. Too bad it was one of those games that always remained under the surface, never gaining the recognition it deserved.
I've never tried this one. Inside the car view seems to work rather well. Need for speed 1 & 2 had really good wheel-view, but other racing games than these never got it right on home machines.
I always loved the "warm haze" in SEGA Racers like Daytona. It suggested a warmer blue sky and warmer colors. Now that you can see it side by side, no matter how good Indy 500 is? It is no Daytona :P . I does proof that SEGA understood color temperatures very well though :). Daytona a more "warm blue skies inviting" look were as Indy 500 a more realistic look :) .

For its time of release and being Sega Model 2B, almost nothing graphically could touch this in 1995. I'm sure anybody else from Spartanburg, South Carolina watching this remember playing the same machine at Mountasia back in the '90s to 2015. Had a lot of memories unlocking the Pace Car and playing it with friends there. I am an owner of the board and it is definitely one of the easier racing games to set up at home as it uses no external sound boards or special controls like a 4-way shifter, etc. Sadly after this game, Sega's later Model 2 racers got very weak (ok except for Motor Raid/Manx and maybe Waverunner), with the slop show that was AM5's Touring Car and rather forgettable Jaleco driving games. :\
I've owned a couple ROM boards for this game. Model 2B main boards are getting difficult to find in working order as they're all hitting the scrap bin unfortunately. I've heard of people frying 2Bs from just swapping ROM boards over which I don't recommend, since the old Omron stack connectors are very brittle. Model 3 and Naomi used newer, nicer stack connectors.

Love the Model 2 colour palette. Every blue is clear skies. Every red is Ferarri. Such a signature (Sega) look.

Daytona got a ton of fun mods back in the day. It’s rare for arcade games to get modded like this did

Played the deluxe 4 player with moving cars in '99 at a big arcade in La Rambla/Barcelona. Great fun!

I actually remember that arcade on La Ramblas during my 1st trip to Barcelona in 1999. Sadly it no longer exists but it was great fun to visit.
International arcades are always fun. I played KOF with local kids in Lima, Peru in 2019 at a small arcade. Great time

Yes the cockpit view either works really well or feels odd. I think the newer Initial D games do it best
The music to engine noise balance und these games seems to be way too much in favor of engine noises IMO

Those Omron’s are def getting brittle. The plastics are just starting to get end of life
Visually, it does look better than Daytona. No AI back then, just human developed obstacles.
