Ive been wrenching on cars for 20 years, this video popped up looking for a diagnosis video, your intro hooked me and I stayed to watch the whole video. I already knew how to change this starter but, your video was so well layed out i decided to watch. Very well thought out and shot tutorials are far and few between. Keep up the good work.
Kevin, thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate the kind words and support - especially form an experienced mechanic as yourself. Happy Holidays -JD
Great video, it helped a lot. The dealer wanted $1200 to fix my starter. Watched your video and it took me about an hour and a half total. The 11mm wrench trick is a great idea
For anyone who is willing to take on this task - it's not that hard. No special tools are required to get to the starter. BUT, my tip to you (from my personal experience) go and buy this this ratchet from Harbor Freight (3/8 In. Drive T-Bar With Flexible Ratchet ), it worked like a charm after unsuccessful tries with flex-head ratchet. This tool was recommended by another mechanic in one of the e90 starter replacement videos. Save yourself some time with a good preparation. Bolts on my 2009 335i Xdrive were E12, not E14 but it seems to vary by model/year, be ready with both sockets. Good luck!
This video was a huge help. One thing I will add that made this so much easier. A thin 7/16 combo ratchet wrench. I was struggling to get sockets/ratchet on the two main bolt holding the starter in. The shorter bolt on the starter was pretty easy to reach from the front, as shown in this video with a long extension, but it was also very tight wasn't wanting to break loose at the angle the extension is at. If you maneuver and wiggle the manifold around, you will find it is very easy to simply reach down and remove both of these main starter bolts with a small 7/16 or 11mm craftsman ratchet wrench. Also the gaskets on the manifold can be accessed by wiggling the manifold around to get access to the gaskets and I used a long zip tie, to keep it in place while I removed the gaskets. As the young man in the video mentioned, a small screwdriver did the trick but they were baked in there pretty good. Carefully work the gasket around with the small flathead screwdriver and eventually it will begin to peel out. Once it starts coming loose the rest of the gasket peels out fairly easily. I can't believe how easy this job was once I found this video and used the small ratchet wrench. No way this manifold needs to come out. Great video and thank you!!
Awesome tutorial! Hopefully someone will find this helpful: I was able to use a 7/16 closed wrench on that back bolt. Really hard to get a grip on it otherwise. Thank you so much for posting this, it made it a pretty straightforward repair!
Works! Just did this with an 09. Tips: keep magnets next to your tool, so you dont drop tools or screws. For the starter dilemma, i kept one hand on the 11mm flat wrench so it would not come off and a metal tube (floor jack handle) over the other end of the wrench to pry it loose initially. Worked perfectly. To get the cheap new aftermarket starter on I noticed that the original starter had a bevel around that circle that inserts into the starter so I grinded one onto mine. The front screw didn't line up so I used the long rear screw as a guide for the front screw hole, to make sure it lined up once I got to starter in there, and then I replaced that with the small screw and put the large screw into the back. ...Now off, to get my get a couple sockets that dropped in to the abyss of the engine bay.
This video is amazing. Learned a ton about my car just watching it. I stupidity payed to have mine replaced. Now the idle is going wild.. the mechanic must have cracked the ccv hose. That's my next adventure. Always something. Thanks for the video.
Just replaced my starter with the help from your video! I was dreading having to do so much removal, not needing to fully pull out the intake manifold made my life so much easier! Might be a 2-year-old video, but it was a huge help!
Great video. Took 3.5 hours complete w clean up. Reused the bolts, but didn’t over tighten them. New intake seals was a great tip. Mahle brand. Starts super fast now. !!!
Great step by step. Only thing different I did was remove the tower bar on the driver side. Not sure if you un plugged the two rail plugs or not but I did to give me more room to move the manifold. Only took me 2 hours from pulling in to leaving. No issues. Hardest part is the actual starter removal and install but not that bad. Car starts faster now. Didn’t replace any parts except the starter bolts. Thank you very much!
This was extremely helpful and save me over $600. by doing it myself, I watched it several time and referenced it off my iPad once I got started. The most difficult thing was the bolt that was on the backside by the transmission, after several attempts with every type of ratchet, swivel and extension i resorted to a box wrench that actually fit over the stud and allowed me enough room to loosen the bolt and still get my hand on the wrench giving me enough room to work, once i accomplished that it was all down hill, but i couldn't have done it without the video provide. thanks for taking the time to produce it was a lifesaver.
Great video. Saved me some time on my 08 E90 sedan. One caveat for others who are doing this procedure: Be careful to get the correct bolt when removing the top starter bolt. You're essentially going by feel, because you can't really see behind the engine. There is a second E14 bolt back there in the same vicinity. It's a little higher and easier to get to than the starter bolt. It's one of the bolts that connects the transmission to the engine, and it's torqued to hell and hard to remove. Don't remove that one. Reach lower to find the starter bolt. Don't ask how I know. Thanks for the video, JD.
Did you have any issues removing the starter bolt? I started trying to remove that bolt with an 11mm wrench which started to strip the bolt. I ordered an e14 wrench and took an attempt at the bolt again, but seems super tight and hard to get loose. I am scared I will strip the bolt again... any suggestions??
@@xdoutrex Make double sure you're on the correct bolt. If using an e14 wrench, it should fit tightly -- no way to strip it, IMO. Use something to get more leverage -- some type of extension. I used the two box wrench trick: th-cam.com/video/SDI4j1LgqV4/w-d-xo.html
Bro my starter won't come out and I was about to do that one next now I need to research it hella because now I don't know if this is a prank or not but I'm assuming it went bad for you
Just replaced my starter on a BMW X3 (N52) and this method "Shortcut" does make it a lot easier ... a little tip here buy an E14 wrench for the aluminum screw in the back and a 12" to 15" extender for the socket on the front aluminum bolt ... also don't forget to buy a new set of aluminum bolts... U$10 at the BMW dealer... Thank you JD Cars !!
Thanks to this video I saved ATLEAST 1000$ 🙏 Ordered the parts I needed, everything came out to 125$ .. waiting on it to come in, then it's all about work 💪
Hi JD. I have a 2007 328i station wagon. I had the same issue after troubleshooting, etc. I followed your step by step approach and it worked like a charm. Thank you for posting and saving me a carload of cash.
Thank you very much for helping me replace the starter by myself with limited tools! However, the car now starts but cuts immediately. Any suggestions as to why?
Never mind I figured it out, in a hurry at dusk I left oil pressure sensor under far left side of manifold. Didn’t break it but caused vacuum leak into manifold.
Was your car cranking slow/weak before the starter went? When I start my 328i the crank feels weak like if the car wasn't gonna start and I'm wondering if I should replace the starter before it leaves me stranded.
Starter usually goes out at around 130,000 miles. If it cranks slow/jumpy.. you should look into getting it replaced before you get stranded. Replacing it yourself wouldnt take more than 2 hours, taking your time.
Hey wanted to say you so much for taking the time to make this video. Did my starter tonight and it went really smoothly and alot easier than I thought! Appreciate it!
What A 🐐👌🏼 Did everything exactly plus new battery bt when I went to start it was having hard time turning on until I gave it a little gas as I pushed the start button what u think that could b test drove for a while and everything’s good jus wanted to know what may have been the issue in case i encounter it again thanks though
Thanks for uploading this video! I just did it myself vs. having the dealership or a shop do it and saved a lot of $$$. The hardest part was getting the top aluminum bolt, it's such a hard place to reach.
So hoping for license to better job so could afford out of pocket expenses when won’t start or leaks coolant. Thanks for overhaul audio helps maintain focus and speeding threw concept parts that are difficult
I have a 2004 BMW 325ci/convertible. I had to put the top down manually (long story) and now want to reconnect the motor ability. I cannot find anything at all about how to do this and I thought you may know. Thank you! Holly
An 11 meter wrench? My, that's a big one. I didn't realize you could remove the intake studs. That would make things a lot easier. That's a good tip for anyone doing this repair. You also need to be careful of the brittle hoses under the intake manifold because they crack easily, make the car idle like crap and cost more than the starter.
What was the tool needed to remove the studs again? I may have to do this soon. I know I can watch the video again just figured I can ask and have it written. Thanks
I second that. They break easy and the car idles like crap if you have a leak. They are also expensive ($100+) and have some sort of a heating coil so you can't just replace with rubber hoses.
Thanks for the video. I just completed (maybe... haven’t started it yet). Closed the trunk after disconnecting the battery. Have to try folding down the seat or jumping it long enough to unlock. Anyway, I had a hard time with the bracket under the intake and then getting the back bolt out on the starter. I ended up getting it with a flex ratchet.
It did start, by the way. The '08 has a hidden key hole under the trunk lid so it wasn't hard to open the trunk. I think the '09 and forward models don't have the key option. Back on the road - thanks again! Oh yeah, one of the hardest things is fitting the battery compartment back together! Still don't have that completed.
I had a little trouble with getting the bolt out in the back, like you stated the E14 wouldn’t fit on and with the 11mm wrench I ended up stripping it. Any idea on how to get it out ?
Awesome video man. However after i installed my starter, the car started, but with a rough idle. Couldn't even rave when i hit the gas peddle. I figured i left something disconnected. Any ideas why that might be so?
@@JDCarsChannel yes, now it wont even start. It cuts power at startup, like lights and all go off for 2 secs, makes a click sound, than power back on, but wont start. Im hopping its just a fuse blown. Might have to take it into a shop. Dreading the price though. Lol
Great video! It helped a lot! Thank you so much for putting this together! It helped a lot! 👍👍 Boy, getting the top bolt out of the starter was not easy!
it only took me 2 hours with removing the entire manifold the hardest part is the two plastic pipes for the ccv other than that its pretty smooth my starter would turn the engine once then start grinding luckily it was the second time ive had to replace the starter so it was under warranty just had to change myself
Hey man great time saving DIY for my 328i! How's the TYC Starter holding up? These have mixed reviews. Some say they are more powerful and spin quicker etc. But other complain that they fail in less than a year? Curious how long yours has lasted? Thanks!
Great service you provide, JD, by showing this shortcut, with excellent guidance - thank you!! I'm getting sparks when I tap the starter (afterwhich it starts), do you think it could be corrosion or a ground problem? Can I get a socket w flex-drive or extension on the electrical connection WITHOUT removing the intake? Any advice appreciated, I'm not convinced it's actually the starter, tapping it w rod makes it start, I'm thinking corrosion somewhere...
I think you are correct...that sounds to me like a loose and/or corroded connection. I would recommend checking the connections to the starter, and cleaning them if necessary.
Your shortcut is great! A lot less stuffs to remove to get at the starter. It encourages me to go ahead and replace the starter myself. Thanks for the great video!
@@JDCarsChannel makes sense, thanks for the video, made the job easy! What did you do to reach/remove the last two intake manifold gaskets? The two farthest from the front, there is barely any room with those two lol
I wish I had watched this video before I did take off the whole manifold to replace the starter. That was nightmare to disconnect a few plastic pipes under the intake manifold. Removing the studs is the best way. Nice job. One request have you done the oil pan gasket replacement? Can you post oil pan gasket replacement diy? It seems the short cut is lower the subframe instead of disconnecting from suspensions.
Awesome tutorial but ran into a problem. Reassembled and car cranks but won’t start. ½ power symbol and codes for injector 1-4 p0201-0204. Willing to pay for suggestions. Seems like I screwed up a connector or failed to connect something.
I have a bmw turns the damper with the starter, and has already tried another battery and with jumper. My bmw 328i 2010. Remove the multi channel run and lower the spark plug but I see that the damper gets hard the starter the coals look good. How hard should the crankshaft be?
You mentioned that the freezing temps seemed to be the cause. As an old multi generation Cape native I have an even better shortcut which I exercised in 1972. Move south.
Hey man im a big fan of yours and i could use your help! I also replaced my starter and the car starts great now but after i start it the whole car shakes for about 15 seconds before it settles. What could be the problem?
JD Cars btw bro amazing job with the videos... I love them! so well done and really cool! getting an e90 in a couple months for my 16th birthday. keep up the awesome videos and topics+
Great video, very educational, however it would be great if you added the torque specifications for the manifold studs and bolts, as well a the starter bolts. Overall, great job, thanks for doing this.
Great video. I am a novice when it comes to car maintenance and this was a tuff job for me. Without your video I'd be lighter in the wallet by $450. Nice dolly shots in the beginning.
hello what is that black wire to the left of positive battery cable..I have a 2008 328i sedan and i dont have that on ,y car..it looks like some kind of ground with a black wire and rounded end..a few inches to left of positive starter battery cable?? what does it go to?
You only removed the negative terminal from the battery. Does this mean the car will have power to not loose the saved states? I am talking about need to redo the radio code. I think that is all that security measures that gets trigger from it not having power. Am I right and does this means I do not need to connect a battery trickle charger?
Once the battery is disconnected I believe the car has zero power...the computer may have a tiny backup battery, but I doubt it. I had to drive the car about 100miles after doing this to reset all the sensors and what not.
Edgar yes I have a BMW a alarm keeps on going off when I try to start it but it won't turn over if anybody has any ideas what it might be please let me know thank you
2 questions. First of great video. 1st question. Does the new starter come with the new bolts? And do I have to separately order manifold gaskets? Is that necessary? Thanks in advance
Nicely done! I'm going to be doing this soon on my '07 E91 wagon. I'm just curious though, did you try push starting the car instead of bothering with the lawn tractor and pully? Since you have a 6 speed manual, I would have thought you could have just put it in second or third (or reverse depending) and just popped the clutch with somebody pushing it, making sure your ignition was all turned on etc.
chamberlin1 I did try push starting it down my driveway, but because my driveway is gravel the tires simply slipped and did not turn over the engine to start it...oh well! Thanks for watching and please subscribe!
JD Cars well the starter finally died completely, so guess what I'm doing this weekend! Came back to your video for a refresher! Lol Tip for everyone: if you have a slow to crank BMW with a good battery, start planning to buy the new starter, aluminum bolts and 6 intake gaskets! Once the starter dies, they're dead! Although I've heard of people tapping them to get a bit more life... But that's just gambling. At least our manual transmission cars push start very easily (if you have solid ground!)
Great video! Thank you very much. Removing those studs was ingenious. Would like to add some hints that worked well on my 06 330i. I disconnected the positive cable on the passenger side, which allowed more slack w manifold. For the top bolt, mine is an e16, I used a 12 pt 7/16 ratchet wrench that fit perfectly tight. For the bottom bolt, I taped it to the socket with one round of electrical tape to get it started without falling out. Best diy video I have ever utilized. Thanks again!

I had a little trouble with getting the bolt out in the back, like you stated the E14 wouldn’t fit on and with the 11mm wrench I ended up stripping it. Any idea on how to get it out ?
Which way are the threads on the manifold stud? The one we are supposed to use the female Torx 6 socket for.
very clean video (no drama there!). You got to the point. Very much appreciate that
Glad you liked the video!
Great job bro !🔥
Thanks I do the job in my cars little difficult when remove the screw one front other back
is it mandatory to replace the seals?
I have 2010 328i XDrive SULEV, black on black! Is the starter located in the same location!
Awesome video man. However after i installed my starter, the car started, but with a rough idle. Couldn't even rave when i hit the gas peddle. I figured i left something disconnected. Any ideas why that might be so?
Hm... did you replace the intake gaskets??
@@JDCarsChannel yes, now it wont even start. It cuts power at startup, like lights and all go off for 2 secs, makes a click sound, than power back on, but wont start. Im hopping its just a fuse blown. Might have to take it into a shop. Dreading the price though. Lol
@@umufella Any luck?
@@MrHavingfun68 yes, so i just one loose connection after re installing. pain in the butt!
@@umufella what was the loose connection? one of the battery connections?
Phenomenal video. You’ve earned a subscriber good sir
Great video! It helped a lot! Thank you so much for putting this together! It helped a lot! 👍👍 Boy, getting the top bolt out of the starter was not easy!
Im looking to get the same starter how has it been workinh any problems?
Saved me $700 good video
That’s what I’m talkin about! Glad we could help 💪
it only took me 2 hours with removing the entire manifold the hardest part is the two plastic pipes for the ccv other than that its pretty smooth my starter would turn the engine once then start grinding luckily it was the second time ive had to replace the starter so it was under warranty just had to change myself
Nice job!
All the information and straight to the point
Hey great video! I'm about to put in my new starter and am curious how long it took you to do from start to finish. Thank you!
Thanks! The process takes about 4 hours with proper tools. Best of luck with your replacement!
@@JDCarsChannel It went great, easy peasy thanks to your video!
great video! was hoping you showed how you pulled the back bolt from the firewall
Hey man great time saving DIY for my 328i! How's the TYC Starter holding up? These have mixed reviews. Some say they are more powerful and spin quicker etc. But other complain that they fail in less than a year? Curious how long yours has lasted? Thanks!
Happy to help! The TYC worked very well (better than stock) for the remainder of my ownership (more than a year).
Awesome video! Thank you Bro!
Hey man. Great video. I saw that you included gaskets in the description. What was the reason for that? Thanks.
Excellent presentation 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job my friend you made this job at ease thank you
Your shortcut is great! A lot less stuffs to remove to get at the starter. It encourages me to go ahead and replace the starter myself. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks! I'm glad the video was of help!
That's a klean engine bay homie 😎
u really helped me out thanks man !!
Glad to help!!
I'm about to do this job tomorrow on my 328, do you need a torque wrench for the manifold bolts? Or just get them snug?
Ideally, you'll want a torque wrench to evenly torque them
@@JDCarsChannel makes sense, thanks for the video, made the job easy!
Sorry you didn't see the video sooner! I will probably be doing the oil pan gasket in the near future. I will try to go the shorter route.
I used an e16 to take it off I struggled for 3 days with the e14
Awesome tutorial but ran into a problem. Reassembled and car cranks but won’t start. ½ power symbol and codes for injector 1-4 p0201-0204. Willing to pay for suggestions. Seems like I screwed up a connector or failed to connect something.
I have a bmw turns the damper with the starter, and has already tried another battery and with jumper. My bmw 328i 2010. Remove the multi channel run and lower the spark plug but I see that the damper gets hard the starter the coals look good. How hard should the crankshaft be?
Thank you for this post!.. appreciate it. Very well done video
Glad it was helpful!
Sounds like a rough idle... check out my VANOS video!
1:50 that oh shit its not stopping moment lmfao XD
Joseph Draper hahahaha ikr 😂😂
JD Cars btw bro amazing job with the videos... I love them! so well done and really cool! getting an e90 in a couple months for my 16th birthday. keep up the awesome videos and topics+
Joseph Draper thanks a lot bro, I appreciate it!
Joseph Draper, I barely see people at your age in these DIY video. I checked some of your videos. You're special bro, keep it up.
Great video, very educational, however it would be great if you added the torque specifications for the manifold studs and bolts, as well a the starter bolts. Overall, great job, thanks for doing this.
I'm glad it was educational!
Great video. I am a novice when it comes to car maintenance and this was a tuff job for me. Without your video I'd be lighter in the wallet by $450. Nice dolly shots in the beginning.
7buffalo6 thank you, I appreciate it! I'm glad I helped you out replacing your starter!
hello what is that black wire to the left of positive battery cable..I have a 2008 328i sedan and i dont have that on ,y car..it looks like some kind of ground with a black wire and rounded end..a few inches to left of positive starter battery cable?? what does it go to?
Wow!! Just changed one out! Your video was a huge help thank you so much
Awesome! I’m glad my video was helpful!!
How did you get the connectors from the manifold off? You skipped that in the video
Thanks dude. I just finished this on my e92.
Glad to help man
stripped the back bolt on starter, using an 11mm wrench... any tips?
Oh no...yikes. You could try vice grips, but that could make it worse.
Get a 10mm an hammer it on the bolt until it grips and loosen
@@ledrxgz7173 absolutely no room to get a hammer back there
@Ben Clark did you ever get it fixed and how?
Hey man. How do you take the negative line off the battery????
I unscrewed the bolt but that stuff is still fitted on there
Sounds like its stuck.. try loosening it with a rubber mallet
Wow looks easy 🔥
You only removed the negative terminal from the battery. Does this mean the car will have power to not loose the saved states? I am talking about need to redo the radio code. I think that is all that security measures that gets trigger from it not having power.
Am I right and does this means I do not need to connect a battery trickle charger?
Once the battery is disconnected I believe the car has zero power...the computer may have a tiny backup battery, but I doubt it. I had to drive the car about 100miles after doing this to reset all the sensors and what not.
I've watched nearly all your video's im curious if all these mods you do will work for an 2011 BMW 328I.And is the wiring still the same? Thanks.
Yup, almost everything is the same! The 2011 is the facelifted version of the E90, but it is still the same car.
Thanks for the upload !!! Awesome!! One question do you know where the fuel pump relay is located? I can't find it anywhere.
Thanks! Not sure...sorry
Dude I'm about to start this thanks again for your video!!!
I believe the fuel pump relay on these, if the same as the 330I's is behind the glove box.
Edgar yes I have a BMW a alarm keeps on going off when I try to start it but it won't turn over if anybody has any ideas what it might be please let me know thank you
@@mikebaker4934 did u ever figure out the problem I have the same problem last night
2 questions. First of great video. 1st question. Does the new starter come with the new bolts? And do I have to separately order manifold gaskets? Is that necessary? Thanks in advance
Both are sold separately. Links below.
JD Cars thanks. Just biggest question was the gaskets for the manifold. Were they 100 percent necessary to change ?
Yes, you will need to change them for a good seal.
Lol
Tip for everyone: if you have a slow to crank BMW with a good battery, start planning to buy the new starter, aluminum bolts and 6 intake gaskets! Once the starter dies, they're dead! Although I've heard of people tapping them to get a bit more life... But that's just gambling. At least our manual transmission cars push start very easily (if you have solid ground!)
chamberlin1 3
I had a lot of trouble getting all the bolts out of the water pump in a 328xi is this harder or easier lol I can't do another one of those jobs
I'm glad the video was helpful! Thanks for adding your clever tips & tricks!
Are u able to access from underneath or no
Nicely done brother great video
