Great breakdown of a very important release from Grace! Love it! It's been such a pleasure working with you documenting this turning point in Grace's career, and we look forward to doing more still with you as her notoriety and fame continues its ascent.
I wish Grace had more exposure, she is so much better than a lot of 'chart toppers'. She should be there instead as her songs and singing is incredible. The production on this album is on point.
I love seeing how Grace is getting more polished with every release. She will be huge star in a year or two at the most. Hard to believe she is so young
Absolutely Brilliant reaction! I've said it before, but it's worth repeating: This is the MOST artistically important EP/album of the year. I've compared it to Bookends side 1 by Simon and Garfunkel in its connectedness one song the others, as well as it's intro, as a special song on its own like Bookends Theme. I think it also shows that Grace is a genre unto herself: "Eclectic Grace" perhaps? Thanks Nina!
Grace VanderWaal at fifteen is already accumulating an artistic resume both in lyrical and musical composition, that history will define as Genius. Grace's declaration of independence from musical conformity raise her to a paramount figure in the music of today's generation and even more so in tomorrows...
It is amazing at how every song she composes are so different from each other. And yet so well developed. Just as if each song is her new style. With each song she reinvents herself. No one else can be so many different singers in one.
I loved Gucci Shoes the moment I heard the intro. It was so different than anything we have heard from her before. I hope she explores it more, but even if not, I'm glad she took us there. I love the entire EP. Thank you for your review. Take no prisoners, indeed 🙃
I'm pretty sure that "spooky" sound in The City is a theremin. It's very effective, I think. If you never heard of Grace and were told this EP was put out by a fifteen year old, you'd never believe it. Hard to pick a favorite; perhaps Poser because it's so emotional and has such great melodies, especially that new ending. But I love them all.
Thank you Nina ! I always am looking forward to your reactions. I loved it and also learn lot of stuff that musicians knows and I don't. And yes, Grace is always a surprice, as she said when she was 12, "the sky is the limit". Hard to believe she is only 15 by just listening to her music. And... please, pleaseeee, I have a request, you need to watch "Grace VanderWaal - The City (Live Performance) | Vevo", it is really the best I've ever seen and listen, even better than the recorded version. Absolutely outstanding. And big thanks again for this !
Great job, really detailed and helpful. You should check out her slow, jazzy performance of "Ur So Beautiful" at TrevorLive from a couple of weeks ago. She has the ability to mold her songs to fit a mood or a setting, and still keep the message. And yup, still 15.
absolutely an outstanding reaction and descriptive delving into all of the aspects of the composition and melodic structure of Grace's music, Let alone the enthusiasm so heart felt Thumbs up. As far as Grace is concerned her eyes are wide open, Her mind is like a sponge absorbing everything in the vast expanse of the musical universe. She is like a kid in the candy shop with no limitations in variety or choice. This girl is a part of music its self, they are one. It is now just a matter of self design and implementation. At fifteen she is truly one of a kind. From this point on I will not compare her to any great composers or artists. She is simply Grace VannderWaal
Having watched her in SF during her tour so I thought the EP would simply be all the songs she introduced on the tour. Boy was I wrong! Gucci Shoes was such an evolution! Worth the price of the EP alone! And the production of the other songs were new as well. I LOVE this EP such growth. Such individuality. Years ahead of her time
So many layers. In Poser, you can hear Grace typing her letters. Some of those effects you mention in Gucci Shoes like the polaroid camera or the horse are all, I believe, Grace's voice. Wear earbuds or better and you can hear Grace singing backup in your left/right/both ears throughout the EP. It's brilliant in every way.
Great review Nina! I absolutely love the whole album, although Poser is the song I gravitate towards most of the time. The guitar around 2 min 50 sec in that song, just before the outro, reminds me of The Cure, of all things. I'm guessing the polaroid sound in Gucci Shoes references the album cover. As for the underwater sound you mention, when I heard the siren sound in The City, I actually thought of a submarine sonar. I agree with your comment about Grace "underselling it" - there is something really disciplined and sparse about both the production and her vocal delivery (except for the final desperate howl in The City, I guess), with plenty of space to appreciate all the subtle qualities of her voice.
It is so enjoyable to see a breakdown of Grace's music from a musician's standpoint. I know Grace has millions of fans, but I've always had this sense that many really were unaware of truly how special Grace's vocals are. It is the comments from musicians/ex-musicians (as I am) who always interested me because many were relating how astonished they were at the sophistication of Grace's vocal skills. She doesn't have the pipes of a Diva, but what she brings -- from my view -- something WAY more interesting. We've all seen the 12 year old girls on the talent shows doing Witney classics, and though these girls are truly amazing ... they will likely go nowhere in music. Why? They bring absolutely nothing new and unique to the table. This absolutely isn't the same when you're talking about Grace. I've seen her play live 5 times. I've seen her in a tiny venue with a few hundred and I've seen her twice in Stadiums. Grace pulls both off wonderfully, but in small venues -- especially in "unplugged" versions (as in Tiny Desk or her rooftop performances) you get to hear the nuances of her voice. This is mostly lost in the stadiums. (These venues generally make every vocalist sound worse.) But in these quiet songs all the idiosyncrasies of her voice are allowed to shine. I have never seen such a gifted vocalist so young. What she has cannot be taught and are gifts given through nature/God (depending upon your beliefs). Beyond her actual vocal characteristics, her phrasing, pacing and instinctual choices she makes are so far beyond her 15 years it cannot actually explained. These are the details that Grace's musician fans tend to recognize, only because of their training and experience. It is stuff that Grace likely had no idea about early on, but I think as she's now been surrounded by musicians and producers, etc. she is likely beginning to understand why she isn't just another young girl with a ukulele. Though, like most prodigies, she likely can't really understand what the fuss is about. lol!!!
I mean, I am not a musician in anyway. But, it doesn’t take a musical background to have heard her original song when she auditioned for AGT to realize she was more than just a voice. It was her amazing ability at even that young of an age to be able to write such an amazing original song, along with her performance and the ukulele... and since those early days, I’m always truly in awe of the original music she writes and sings. I think even the casual music listener knows that she’s a once in a lifetime genius talent.
Great reaction!! You used several words that really caught my ear. The main one was Impact. Since following Grace she has had a huge Impact on how I view music in today’s era. She mixes so many different genres in her music. If you really had to pin her into one specific category what would you say it is? I say Intergalactic Rock because when I listen to her she takes me out of this world. Love your channel. Peace to you!!
Whats amazing is she pointed at this sound with Lungs two years ago. But still varies music style to suit subject matter and feel, and she loves Jazz too. (Trumpet part in The City).
Great reaction. Grace is so good. I keep using Simon Cowell's words, "This girl is special". I really don't know why her music has not taken off big time in the main stream.
I agree with you Warren. I really don't understand why she isn't ranked on billboard. Her first song on AGT was viewed 46m times. Is it a problem with what genre her music fits?
@@rongiveans7215 I am baffled why she isn't getting heard. That has to be the reason she isn't hitting the charts. Especially her newer stuff....really good and all the reaction videos from people who have not hear her are overwhelmed by her. Not one bad reaction.
Thanks Nina, ur reaction is so beautiful, on repeat wasting my time. So genuine no posing, had me smiling all through bigger than a city, so I love it and DO like it. Like Grace ur more precious than Gucci Shoes.
Every time I listen, I have a different favorite. Love all of these songs but they keep taking turns getting stuck in my head, lol! Yesterday was hectic for me and The City was my calming mantra song, going on in my head. Waste My Time was my dance around the house, play it at high volume, song, the other day. I think today might be Poseur's turn.
I just wanted to point out the little difference between the live version of The City that you reviewed a few weeks ago and the studio version: you commented on how Grace's vocals in the concert version at one point were punctuated by just single guitar notes, and here in the studio version they do the same thing only with that military drum. Between that siren sound (theremin), the marching drums and the trumpet, The City really is very unique, unlike anything else I've heard.
This paragraph, from her TMRW interview, is most telling: Reflecting on how she has developed over the last three years, VanderWaal continues: “I really can now see myself grow in the way of hearing melodically ‘what does anger sound like? What does sadness sound like? What does confusion sound like?’ I think those are really interesting things to experiment with, but I just really want to improve on that.” She's already quite good at stimulating emotional responses in us - and she wants to examine aspects of other emotions. Article is here - www.tmrwmagazine.com/features/music/meet-grace-vanderwaal
Tom Kauffman thanks for sharing the interview. Re: her exploration of emotions, anyone who heard Darkness Keeps Chasing Me from Just the Beginning, knows she can express emotion effortlessly.. Still absolutely stunning. Loving Letters Vol.1 and cannot wait for Vol.2!!!
Note that The City has two of her band members in the mix: Melissa on guitar and Nolan Frank on trumpet. (www.genius.com). Great review - I learned there is a lot more going on than just my casual listening to the EP.

Hi Nina - great reaction again- the Gucci Shoes intro seems to have a Super Tramp sound to it - what do you think. Love the EP and Grace’s creativity and growth.
I assume you mean Supertramp, and Grace did ask her supporters about what turned out to be "Goodbye Stranger", which resembles the 1st part of Gucci Shoes a LITTLE bit, but not that much. I hear just a touch of Miley's "We Can't Stop" in there also, but I'm sure that's not intentional. Nice to have a mystery as to how Grace somehow puts everything together, what with so many rip-off songs (Liar, etc.) clogging up the airwaves these days.
Brad Haney - Yeah Brad, definitely meant Super Tramp- and I wasn’t aware Grace’s reference to Goodbye Strangers which is what I was thinking when I heard this song. Thx from down-under (Aussie).
@@tonyjob5172 it's been a while since I remember her talking about Supertramp, all I recall from it was she thought the way Roger Hodgson sang was funny
Grace has said she's been listening to a lot of jazz lately. I would love to hear her do some songs with a real jazz band backing her. I can't even imagine what kind of a twist she would do with jazz. AND, what if she did a sax solo? She played sax in her school's marching band so it wouldn't be too hard for her to learn a solo. Great reaction, BTW. You hear things I never would have - like the Polaroid camera sound.
Im so glad that live organic drums are front and center of her music overall. It really makes her sound pop out above the general sample synth wash background of almost all pop today
Beautiful Thing (age 12), Darkness Keeps Chasing Me (13) and now Gucci Shoes (15). Grace VanderWaal is the most important singer-songwriter of her generation.
Nina - I’m just a lad down-under (Australia), and I don’t understand why Grace’s EP hasn’t been picked up, recognised and promoted across US radio and entertainment Channels.
Pl Dk - no air play and her videos do not appear on Aussie TV - mainly TH-cam and connection to AGT. Maybe someday- I’m surprised her management does not set up a Japanese mini tour as I understand she is very popular there.
Hi Nina great reaction/review! This is the best EP I've heard in a while now. I was hoping you could do a reaction/review to Tash Sultana's "Jungle". I recommend the version on TH-cam that she recorded in her bedroom.
Great reaction, do watch her on Kelly Clarkson show, shes not singing, but her personality shines through - and interaction with Josh Gadd (voices Olaf in Frozen, is absolutely priceless).
We want to hear more of Grace - you are singing her songs. Seems like you like her and her music. Thanks for a positive reaction. She is truly evolving and getting better and better. I want to hear more of her music and please shorten your constant interruptions of her music.
Little Mix should collab with, or at least recognise and support Grace, she also supports LGBTQ+ community. Here is her chilled out version of Ur so Beautiful for Trevor Live Project th-cam.com/video/dy0Qk-VDNVM/w-d-xo.html
Excellent review, Nina Schofield, thank you. This EP is wonderful and if I were to choose I would say The City and Ur So Beautiful in my opinion were the best the first for the wonderful vocals a real power and extraordinary creativity in the musical construction and the second has a wonderful dance rhythm that rocked by this captivating and tuned voice, it's something contagious that almost no one stands still listening to this song, a memorable work, congratulations and “always success” !!!
I love most of Grace's music.....She is so unique in her lyrics and music . She is so much like a jazz or blues singer that sings with their whole body and soul. I have a question for you, What genre would you place her music in? She crosses several genres, R&B, jazz, soul, and pop. I recommend one of her songs when she was 11. "Exes and Oh's" it will blow you away. Thanks for reviewing Grace's music, she truly is a prodigy,
Love the horns in The City and Grace's pissed off primal scream at the end--have fuuuuun! Actually when she's as famous as Billie Eilish I'll be really happy and proud but a bit sad, if that makes sense.
please react to Happy Songs by Grace. you can find it smth.incredible youtube channel or soundcloud (forget the user name). Apparently completely 100% Grace produced
Hi You should react to some Twenty one Pilots songs from their newest album Trench. or a whole album. Trust me you'll love this. jumpsuit, pet cheetach, morph etc.
I'm a major fan of Grace's music. "I don't like you" gives us a bit out grace wailing, which is always cool. "Poser" Is soft and desperate, I felt every second of it. In the city is very calming and, gives us the classic voice break at the end. I also love the parts where her voice is very clear "Cause you're in the city when you should be here with me". I love the lyrics in Gucci shoes but, I have to say, if she cleaned up her diction a little bit it would be better. It loses some impact because you can't always understand her. I've noticed this in a few of her other songs. Before anyone dogs me out about the criticism, please understand, this comes from a huge fan of her music. I literally listen to it on repeat. When I play her music for friends, it's common that they can't always tell what she is saying and lose some interest. I am hoping this is helpful not hurtful. I need her to keep making music, she is my medication.
Lots of great singers and songs have lyrics that one can't understand completely without seeing the lyrics on the liner. That said it would be interesting to hear grace sing a song with perfect Diction and compare and contrast. Something tells me the song would lose some of its emotional effect.
@@jyee2217 Well said, I wouldn't ask for perfect diction, maybe a mild clean up. It would be interesting to hear the contrast though. My daughters voice coach, who sang on Broadway, used to grill her about diction, apparently it's common with young singers. "You can sound cool but, the audience must be able to understand you to get the full impact of the song". I'll be interested to see how she progresses.
@@mr.non-existent8137 no criticism intended for Nina. Tried again no ads, or not a Billie one. Just had noted mostly Billie ads on Graces videos, others had commented too.
Ms. Schofield, Right after the beginning of this vid, you mentioned you were doing a Grace documentary, did you mean that you are part of a team? Are you part of Vandervault's Grace documentary? As of yet, I haven,'t heard this song(I mean hear it well), so I don't hear what you're hearing...I can hear that TH-cam's sound cards are nothing close to what you're hearing. Just imagine the cheapest monaural sound and you should know.....that's what we're hearing. But knowing it's Grace behind that, I imagine she sounds REALLY GOOD from where you are!

It would great if she did a live album. this were you here her true talent ‘live’ she so natural on stage. and is something a lot of artist a lot older than her fail to do without ‘auto tune’ this what makes her so unique one of a kind.

Oh my, you are do fantastic to watch. Your enthusiasm and how much you enjoying listening is beyond words, could watch you for hours 🖤💟🖤
Great work, I love your takes on Grace´s music as a fellow musician. Very interesting. Keep it up!
Im so glad that live organic drums are front and center of her music overall. It really makes her sound pop out above the general sample synth wash background of almost all pop today
Synthwash, with new Grace-oclean!
Is she played on radio in Australia?
Pl Dk - no air play and her videos do not appear on Aussie TV - mainly TH-cam and connection to AGT. Maybe someday- I’m surprised her management does not set up a Japanese mini tour as I understand she is very popular there.
@@tonyjob5172 she has been to Japan, there are videos on you tube. Rumoured she is coming here to UK next year.
i love Grace, & i feel thankful that you reacted to it. i love this EP sooo much
Hi Nina great reaction/review! This is the best EP I've heard in a while now. I was hoping you could do a reaction/review to Tash Sultana's "Jungle". I recommend the version on TH-cam that she recorded in her bedroom.
Been listening to this a lot. Can't wait for Vol 2.
Great reaction, do watch her on Kelly Clarkson show, shes not singing, but her personality shines through - and interaction with Josh Gadd (voices Olaf in Frozen, is absolutely priceless).
She's probably writing a whole new album while in quarantine .
My favorite song is #1,#2,#3,#4,#5 and #6.
Brian Day What a coincidence those are my favorite too 😁
We want to hear more of Grace - you are singing her songs. Seems like you like her and her music. Thanks for a positive reaction. She is truly evolving and getting better and better. I want to hear more of her music and please shorten your constant interruptions of her music.
I love how uplifting her music is
ahhh yay so excited to watch
Little Mix should collab with, or at least recognise and support Grace, she also supports LGBTQ+ community. Here is her chilled out version of Ur so Beautiful for Trevor Live Project

Thanks for reviewing Grace's music, she truly is a prodigy,
Exs and ohs is a cover
I think someone in comments was suggesting the "spooky" sound was a theremin, but I actually it is simply slide on guitar.
Love the horns in The City and Grace's pissed off primal scream at the end--have fuuuuun! Actually when she's as famous as Billie Eilish I'll be really happy and proud but a bit sad, if that makes sense.
Graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!
please react to Happy Songs by Grace. you can find it smth.incredible youtube channel or soundcloud (forget the user name). Apparently completely 100% Grace produced
Please...she produced it herself.
Hi
You should react to some Twenty one Pilots songs from their newest album Trench. or a whole album. Trust me you'll love this.
jumpsuit, pet cheetach, morph etc.
n oob agreed! Trench is epic from start to finish. I think Nina would love them.
That said it would be interesting to hear grace sing a song with perfect
Diction and compare and contrast.
Whats going on with you tube putting Billy Eilish in ads before videos about Grace!?
I don't think youtubers have control over what ads go into their videos lol I didn't get a Billie ad
@@mr.non-existent8137 no criticism intended for Nina. Tried again no ads, or not a Billie one. Just had noted mostly Billie ads on Graces videos, others had commented too.
Grace would billiy Eilish off the stage!
My favorite from this EP so far is The City.
Yes, Nina is a subject matter expert in our documentary.👌
She's even featured in the last third of the trailer she's provided a link to in the description of this video.👍
@@WaalFlowersHQ
Yes...I had thought Nina was part of your Documentary. How long will the final cut be?
I have approached Grace's LBI Agency to talk with her PR Mgr.; so far, no response. I hate this waiting.
And the GV Fan Club website is still down, and neither of their admins has responded. If you were to see the whole VANDERLIST (that I sent you a sampler of) and the film projects and the other ideas for her career that I created you would KNOW why I'm antsy.
Hey nina! Could you react to trench by twenty one pilots! I know you would love the depth of sound and lyrics that are there! Great video as always. You're amazing! Keep it up!
YES
Beyond The Review yes, Nina would probably adore Trench. It’s brilliant!
Hi Nina!! Please react to "Into the Unknown" and "Show yourself" on frozen 2 please.. THANK YOUU!!
Grace fans are you aware of concerning posts on her videos.
Poster not here yet.

@@gregcadman6102 thanks, glad to see others reporting too.
@@gregcadman6102 there is a very recent one on WMT live performance where he talks about wanting to touch her. Others where he indicates he saw her in concert, and several referring to Frisco did Grace tour there?

Hi I like your comments on this album. but I’m not a fan of the production on this. you just don’t get the emotion and power she portrays onstage. It would great if she did a live album. this were you here her true talent ‘live’ she so natural on stage. and is something a lot of artist a lot older than her fail to do without ‘auto tune’ this what makes her so unique one of a kind.
heeey nina can you react to little mix more than words live at the O2 arena with kamille and also lana del rey's latest album it was epic 💜
She doesn`t need that much reverb, her voice speakes on it own,,.THATS THE PRODUCERS FAULT,SHAME.
Grace is always in the studio when her songs are being produced it's how she likes them and no ur so beautiful does not sound like a selina Gomez song.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEAAAAASSSSEEE REACT TO “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish
