    Ray Kennedy was a ridiculously good player. All the more depressing that he wasn't even your best.

    • @paulgraham6316
      @paulgraham6316 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bob Paisley once said that, of all the players he managed, Kennedy was the one more opposing clubs wanted to buy.

      He bought him and switched his position too.

      Shankly bought him (on the day he resigned) and Paisley changed his position after he struggled initially as a striker.

    a great result in a near perfect season being a liverpool fan i couldnt understand why liverpool were so negative away from home in the league with only FIVE away wins and only FIFTEEN goals scored. We scored more than once in only one away game all season thats bottom of the table form and it was only our anfield form that won us the league i just thought it strange that a team chasing the treble could be jeckl and hyde home and away and i think we brought our away form into the cup final at wembley giving cup team united the chance to turn us over it will be very hard to have that chance again

    • @desplatt842
      @desplatt842 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eddie ; I know what you mean by that and it was amazing with such brilliant players. I can remember however that we were superb in the second half at Old Trafford that season and desperately unlucky not to win ( it was 0-0) so it wasn’t every game. Later in the Paisley era I saw some magnificently positive football in away games.

    The Everton goal at 2:00 was never offside

    • @steveblack610
      @steveblack610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah with a bit of pause/play it looks to me like Liverpool number 5 stood rigid with arm up would’ve played Dobson onside

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveblack610 that's just a guess, given that he (Ray Kennedy) is out of frame until well after the ball is played. You might be right, but there's no way of telling whether he moved backwards or not from this clip, or even whether he's level (which was offside then) if he didn't move.

    Thanks for posting that Dave. I was at the game. Everton had a lot of pressure and Smith and Hughes were magnificent in centre defence ; always amazed me that two people who disliked each other so much could play together so well. Even as a Liverpool fan, have to say Everton very unlucky in first game and what a silly penalty to give away in second.

    • @peterh1353
      @peterh1353 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two players who made the most of limited - but hardworking - talents. Always thought that Smith had a slightly camp running style - always pausing as if tired - after a couple of steps!

    • @paulgraham6316
      @paulgraham6316 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Smith hated Hughes because...well, of a dubious incident which occurred in the Liverpool dressing room prior to the 1972 Championship "decider" against Arsenal. I got to know Tommy as a columnist on the Koptalk website a few years ago - he was a nice bloke. When I met Emlyn Hughes I found him to be arrogant and self-centred.

      @paulgraham6316 Tommy Smith had morals and was a decent honest person...Hughes talked himself into being club captain, Smith hated the two faced underhanded nature of Hughes, who was extremely arrogant!

    Has there ever been a more clinical penalty-taker than Phil Neal? Easy to see why he was a centre forward in his early days at Northampton Town.

    • @DaveWallerLFC

      He missed 13 penalties for Liverpool out of 51, which isn't that impressive. Usually scored when it really mattered though.

      @@DaveWallerLFC Cheers Dave. Glad to know my impression was correct. I remember the sort of sad conversation men have discussing who we would want to have take a penalty for our life . For me it would’ve been a toss between Phil Neal in that early period or Alan Shearer.
      Just re Phil Neal, people talk about wingbacks as though they were a modern phenomenon but to me Phil Neil was a wingback; most of the defence was done by Jimmy Case or Sammy Lee.

    Looks like Liverpool had both ends of the stadium.. how comes it wasn't a 50 / 50 split..

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a bit hard to tell on highlights this brief, but is it that there were some Liverpool fans in with the Everton fans, and vice versa (which was normal then)? It seems like a larger proportion of people in the left hand end celebrate Neal's goal than the 2 goals in the second half. If you watch the goals from the first game, people celebrate Liverpool and Everton goals at the right hand end. It looks as thought the Kippax (opposite the cameras) is split, with Liverpool having the larger part. I assume Everton were allocated the stand where the camera were.

    • @stel3209
