i feel sorry for the bad singers who obviously get their hopes up when the producers choose them to sing in front of the judges, even though they're obviously picked just for entertainment and to be laughed at
but man, when that dad started touching random people in the audience and petted demi 😐😐 thats a bit much.... maybe..... dont do that? (also i feel so bad for his kid, he looked so embarrassed)

Feel the same- that they are picked to made fun of. They seem to hype them up that they are great and then made fun of.
I hate that they are set up to fail. They will encourage them to sing or behave in a way that will be used against them.
Want to bet daddy was encouraged to work the crowd, move around, to break into the judges space and interact with them.
These people do what they are asked to do and then are humiliated for it.

the guy with the high voice was literally so wholesome and the judges were (unusually) nice too i loved that somehow

That's ironic, because he went as a total joke. His name is Joseph Tolve and he has normal voice.
What disappoints me most is that these people are just scapegoats put on the show by the producers for their ultimate fantasy... For people to laugh at.

The thing to remember is, that all of these singers were told exactly how they should perform by the producers, before they went on the show. A good example was a contestant named Zoe, where the clip was edited in a way, that made her look like a lunatic. Another contestant that was also told to portray herself as a character, ended her life when she was 38. Appearently the audition is unrelated, but it's hard to say that it had no effect, looking at the sheer size of media bullying and ridiculing.

@Olive I mean she went to audition to get a chance to grow out of that, then the producers told her she had to preform a Pink song. And then the judges start questioning why she’s singing a Pink song, Simon is a producer of the show as well, i get why she reacted that way, she was being set up to fail.
@Olive She was actually set up to fail. When she was singing the second song, they turned off the speakers facing her, meaning that she couldn't hear herself, which is a HUGE part of singing.
@Olive girl, I’m glad to see someone bring rationality to this thing abt Zoe lol. I watched her vids, I agree the show was wrong to manipulate her but the reaction she gave was wild, and the tone in her videos abt it bothered me too. There’s something abt her that unsettles me.

I get that some people go on the show just to get roasted by Simon, but man, he can be so mean. I always feel bad for the ones who are there legitimately trying and he just tears them down more than is necessary.
It’s part of the formula for the show. I think I blame the family and friends as they are the ones who have not been honest in their feedback and that is why these singers are not realistic about their ability. If you succeed , I think it’s because you have the talent and that ability to stand out, in a good way. I’m not a good singer so love to see those who are talented.
Some people need a reality check. I respect people who are blunt and straightforward cause at least I know that you trust that I can handle the truth and dont need it sugarcoated
Xfactor and Anerican Idol are rigged shows that sometimes force the people to do these things that is why reality shows just damage the self Image for many people.
to be fair im pretty sure its in his contract to rip everyone a new one. i still remember the simpsons episode where homer tore simon a new one judging everyone when he isnt even american.

When the last guy said “was that not good enough” I honestly felt like it broke me. Fairly often I ask myself if I’m even doing good enough so hearing someone else say that about themselves just doesn’t feel good, man. :(
I thought he was the best one in this compilation.
I did wonder if he was somewhere on the autism spectrum... even in the interview beforehand, he reminded me very strongly of other people I know who are - the mannerisms, his way of phrasing things.

I know that was a standard with most singing competitions for a while to put bad singers mixed in with good singer. It was considered "good tv", but I think it was also intended to be a palette cleanser so the good singers don't just melt into each other. I used to despise two major parts of these show, making fun of bad singers, and the tear-jerker backstories. I would just skip past all that. I got to the point where the 1.5 hours audition episodes would end up being about 25 minutes because I'd only watch the parts with the good auditions.
+1, it's why I only watch these various shows via highlights on TH-cam.
This type of commentary is why I got hooked on this channel. He’s just so nice; honest, but not mean about it.

I like when they're really bad but the judges are still really nice & encouraging in redirecting them (for clarification, when there's an option for redirection, like the guy with the high voice they directed towards voice acting)

@Tera W yes, they told him his voice was not suited for singing, and that he'd be better off doing voice acting. That's not passive aggressive, it's reality. I think it's more constructive, when applicable, for the judges to give a professional redirected suggestion as opposed to withholding said suggestion, laughing at them & just telling them their singing is excruciatingly awful & makes their ears bleed. But, I'm not surprised you prefer the latter, as that's precisely why the judges are so indiscriminately cruel & brutally heartless sometimes.
yes like how does being outright cruel benefit them! Honestly I think that most people if they really were serious about it COULD learn to sing. For some people it would take more practice than others but I think it's possible unless they're tone deaf (which is a small portion of the population). Will they become famous singers? Probably not. But again I find that most of the people that sing poorly on these shows are not actually that serious about singing. They just want to be performers/be famous. If they were serious they'd take lessons learning how to stay on pitch, better breath control and nicer tone.

The guy who touched Demi was the most cringe for sure. Kinda agree with Joel that its less cringy when they are bad and more the social situation that they create.

This gives me a feeling of empathy along with cringe for those contestants. Some might have even been in need of money which would've made them do this
No one believes/thinks they’ll be paid after they’re manipulated being told they’re awesome and talented and what to sing and stuff… they’re just manipulated and made to believe that…
If you’re trying to imply they’re paid actors, why tf would they do that when they can manipulate hopefuls for free at the victim’s expense?

I am also terrible at signing, and I never sing because I am imbarased by my voice, so I actually really admire their bravery.
As someone who doesn't have the confidence to song in front of others I appreciate joel not judging ppl harshly if they don't song well.
So as someone who worked on similar sets- usually these people need to go through an earlier audition and only then getting a call back for the live/tv record audition, so some are being cast purposely to be a comic relief

The 4th singer in this list is Keith Beukalear. He actually came back after a few years to audition in X Factor US & this time he actually got a yes from Simon!!!!!!!
I thought it was the third. I think my kids distracted me on one probably. He was very good still remember watching it on TV. Good thing he didn't let Simon get to him
As someone on the spectrum, it really makes me ache inside to see some of these people try their best and clearly be the punchline of a joke they had no idea they were being seen as. Some people genuinely do not realize they are being turned into a joke until it is too late...

After the second season it was obvious that there were people singing horribly just to get on TV.
5:10 this guy performed the very first rickroll and he did it LIVE!!
That Joseph guy was actually a pretty good clip, singing was awful but the comments from the jury is so correct. He would do really well in a sesame street kind of show. Talking voice is really unique.
He has a completely regular voice. He went as a joke with a fake voice.
I’d love to see Joel as a judge. He’d be up there mopping up tears and being so sweet to the all the tone deaf lol

I remember when they’d do like compilations of people singing the same awful song on American idol, specifically “Don’tcha” by the pussycat dolls. I always wondered why so many people would pick such a bad audition song that they clearly barely knew… but then I found out that they were told to sing certain songs by producers and it all made sense lol definitely a set up for some of these people!

I hate Simon so much. When I was in 3rd grade I was picked as one of the solo singers for my school and ever since then I was inlove with singing. Ofc I was also in love with these shows.
But earing Simon constantly tell people "if you aint got it, you ait got it" really killed my love for singing, cause I though "I don't sing like Demi or any other famous singers, therefor I aint got it, and I never will"
Thats such a complete bs, and I now know that anyone can learn to sing to some degree with practice, and that your voice works just like a muscle does. I wonder who I'd be now if Simon hadn't killed my teenager dreams of being a singer. Its sad cause I really liked him growing up and looked up to him, but he's really just an awful man willing to break people for some tv drama. God know a lot of the singers he made fun of could be amazing now with some proper guiding and support!

Joel is strong with empathy which is so endearing.
You also have to factor in that singing in front of a massive crowd or TV cameras for the very first time is going to be a very nerve-racking experience. You can tell that the contestants are extremely nervous when going to perform which will undoubtedly affect their performance. For example you can hear from his voice that this guy at 18:08 is nervous as fuck.

I am not a singer but I can sing on key. My voice is nothing special, but it's ok. And I have to admire some of these people trying because I would never dream I was good enough to sing in front of strangers, let alone audition in one of those things. That takes some special kind of self confidence! I feel that sometimes the judges are bullies and judgmental. It is okay to let people know they are not good enough but wrong to humiliate them even more.
I know what you’re saying, BUT I have to say that with these singers auditioning & being horrible, I feel like the judges are giving them a MUCH NEEDED wake up call that they’ve NEVER RECEIVED from anyone in their family or friends.

I feel like the duo of guys was like one of them was actually going to audition, but his best friend asked to audition with him, and the singing guy couldn’t say no, so he just gave him some crappy ad libs and brought him along.

I was also sad watching number 6. She obviously wasn’t a good singer, but she at least didn’t get mad or anything when they said no and she just kinda said “thanks” and “i still love American idol” before she left.

Darwin Reedy was sitting near me at the auditions in Seattle. She wasn't fake, just terrible deceived by the judges. They picked a lot of people from Seattle that year that were awful to make fun of Seattle a bunch.
its what you said joel: the problem with these shows is indeed the pre auditions. they really get their hopes up and tell them to do weird shit just to get some more views. its so sad and indeed, makes it cringe.
The Second guy steven was a great singer, The way he flips his Falsetto, He can truly Rival the bests in the industry.

Some of these people are so nice and it is so sad to see the judges treating them like they do. I'm pretty sure, no positive, that they take the worst ones out of thousands and they only get a few really bad tempered people. It makes me happy

I feel like it’s bullying to some of these people. I hope it’s staged and they weren’t really serious about it. I think most is for comedic effect, hopefully.
Many if not all of these are obvious actors; possibly trolls, but ?? only maybe. If you're used to Joel's sarcasm, the joke becomes how much he lets on that he's wise to the acting throughout the video. Good work, Joel - makes for a rewatchable video in a way! Curious if you've ever pursued stand-up or at least considered it for fun.
I used to watch this show with my mom and we would skip the first few episodes every season because of these. The sadness we felt for the ones that truly believed they could sing and got crushed wasn't enjoyable to us.
