- In the first installment of the Wegs Garage Overdrive Rebuild series, we tear down the Type A unit on our 1964 Triumph TR4 and assess what's inside.
Hint: it's really nasty!
Tune in to watch our DIY teardown of the Laycock de Normanville Type A overdrive. First removing it from the transmission, then separating various parts of the OD.
What a sin! ODs are much too rare to not put together properly. Good on ya for doing it right this time around. I see you got a boo-boo on your finger, Mark. Hope you're going to survive...I want to see this OD unit back together! Good vid, gentlemen.
Yes one of the hazards of this job 🤕. It's healing nicely haha. Failure is not an option here. It's definitely going back together! Although there is a lot to learn on this job.
@@WegsGarage That's good. I learn something new every day on that Spitfire of mine...half the reason I'm doing all of this. The other half...driving it (eventually). Good luck, guys!
Great Video and good luck with this mix and match Gear-OD-Box.
Looking forward ... you will fix the issue!
Greetings, after four power hours in the Garage, from Germany
Uwe
Mix and match is right! What were you working on?
Hi Mark, actually i restore, after two years of driving, a 1966 TR4A Europe Model, first delivered to Switzerland, totally.
30 years before, as a student on economics, i imported a 1965 MGB from Dallas Texas wich was totally damaged and rusty.
At this time a neighbor teach me to weld and refurbished all the mechanical parts of old english cars.
He was a professional an worked at a restoration shop here in Kassel in the middle of Germany.
Now, 30 years ago, my children doesn’t need his father because they live their own live, i try to
reactivate my experience... hopefully :-).
We share the same hobby, that’s nice ( greetings to your Dad)!
My wife and i often, two times a year, go on holidays to Florida (Anna !aria Island) ,
an we like the scene of American historic car enthusiasts,
All the stuff because the people share the same hobby.
Greetings
Uwe
Nice work! You can use Permatex Anerobic flange sealant to seal both the gasket and ungasketed sealing surfaces of the trans and OD.
Thanks for the tip! This is exactly what I needed to know. The lack of gasket on the brake ring seems like a bad idea.
@@WegsGarage wellseal (shalack) was the mfg sealant used on brake ring
You have a 3 syncro TR3 Transmission in a TR4 which should have a 4 syncro gearbox. Good luck getting all the splines lined up to re-install the OD. Assemble it without springs first to make sure it slips together, don't disturb anything and then install the springs. Also be careful getting the pump onto the eccentric pump drive. It will take a few attempts whatever you do don't force it together or you'll have a broken OD.
Very observant! It is a TR3 trans, or I *think* early 4's had the 3 syncro box too. It has definitely been out many times in it's history.
Not looking forward to lining up splines....
Wegs Garage TR3B’s and all TR4’s had an all synchro box.
Thanks Tush. You are correct. This is likely out of a three. Not sure when or why it was changed, but certainly not the only oddity we have found on this project.
Hi, thanks for your videos. Very helpful. Could you please share any trick how to get the two sets of splines in line when the overdrive has been already assembled ? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I think we covered how we did it in this video: th-cam.com/video/iawdyE9r7jY/w-d-xo.html . We used two wood paint sticks to keep the splines aligned. Worked pretty well. They were just the right width and thickness.
If you have the transmission taken apart, the best way to do it is with the actual mainshaft.
use an L shaped rod and turn the udc spline anti clockwise to line up spline
The silicone would have been fine had they remembered to put duct tape around the outside. Haha.
Yeah, we learn from others' mistakes. We will not forget the duct tape this time.
Could be worth an email to either Macy’s Garage or Quantum Mechanics for any tips/advice on rebuilding the OD. Both of those shops have done plenty of Triumph ODs.
Now you know why you remove the passenger seat and not the driver's seat...
Very true!
@@WegsGarage Handbrake in the way on the right side...but could the steering wheel not be removed for easier access...?
You might have opened up a can of worms look into rusty beauties Elon rebuilds a overdrive check it out
His series has been a huge help!
