Best explanation on the DISA valves ever. This obviously applies to the n52 as well. But hopefully you can include a tear down of the n52 disa valve eventually
You sir are quite literally my favorite channel to watch on TH-cam. My god damn hero as far as my car is concerned. Quite frankly you have not only aided in the improvement of my car, but, the preventing of necessary maintenance to it. Thank you!
Dude, I’ve been looking (over the last 9 months) for an expert explanation of the disa. My e46 was gutless at low and high rpm. Otherwise in ran beautifully. No rattling. I suspected the Disa. I bought a repair kit. Thanks for this detailed vid! 👍
I wish you went over the diaphragm membrane in the vacuum pot. You can test it by covering the little hole on the side and seeing if the flap stays in position when it's closed (or open??) Removing the cover is a pain in the ass and cost me at least 3 hours of my time, but it is serviceable with a 15 dollar part
Another great video full of useful information! Great to watch content from someone so local too. I might add that I get a lot of my parts from clickable automotive who are in Australia and specialise in oem bmw parts!!!
Show! DISA improves torque at low and medium revs, favoring performance and economy. Use the aluminum replacement kit and you'll escape the death pin. Success!
I just wanna add something: my DISA was rattling cause it was old, but when I replaced it the new one rattled as well. Turns out it was bad engine mounts and intake side was sagging and when replaced those mounts all noise and vibration disappeared.
Replacing the engine and transmission mounts is the best piece of maintenance I've done on my E46, the car now has zero vibration and feels like a new car.
Funny how he said my disa valve was rattling but it wasnt even the disa valve rattling so then why would you even say it was rattling it wasnt you just THOUGHT it was
I've just now put anX8R kit in my 530 with the thinner black O ring going at the base of the Disa as their video showed. Perfect with a strong induction sound from the Mishimoto intake boot.
Great video and explanation, i was getting poor economy so i decided to upgrade it with a kit from ebay. It was tricky getting it done but did it. The only sound i can hear from it is what i can describe as a slight sucking noise..is that normal? I accidentally installed it without the small cover on and decided to leave it off to see if it was working, all good i think.
The DISA valve was the main reason I reverted my M50 manifold back to stock (B30). Lost low end torque with the M50 mani but gained high end. Not that good for a daily driver IMO.
Are you sure the grand daughter was involved in that injury to your thumb mate??😅😂 i have a sneaking suspicion you injured yourself on the tools😂 Jokes😅 great video bro💯
The DISA does not end with the M54 and E46, its in the N52 and N53 engines as well, with the similar problems! Only on the later engines it seems that replacing them is alot more complex...
Any updates on the VF Engineering rig? Would love to see a “final impressions”. Here in the US I can find a 330 salvage with some ease, so i might just swap my 325i for that to start. Interested to see how you feel. Like you said on your maintenance videos and you “do not mod”…This is a long term car for me. Love the E46 family and the problem solving/platform benefits.
I had a P1074 (p1071 is typically for 4-cyl engines and P1074 is for i6 or V-shaped engines) code on my scan tool, needless to say a 11 euro lower intake boot turned into a 300 euro repair (I had to replace my mass airflow censor), it was not that expensive of a repair but at least I no longer have a vakuum leak.
@@sksuppressor756 No the MAF sensor went out and the vacuum leak of the lower intake boot is what tripped the check engine light and gave me the P1074 code.
I get the bank 1/2 running lean code occasionally and mpg has been bad (200k mile E46). Haven’t noticed strong rattling noise but now that I watch this I’m convinced it’s DISA? Would you recommend just replacing entire thing or try rebuild kit knowing mileage (note I bought this from a friend for my sons first car so don’t know when he replaced it but I’m betting not since 100k). Great videos!!
Great video!!!👍🏼 I have been watching the channel for a while now and been doing the mods which you have recommended except the supercharger :p, although, i have been getting good performance, fuel economy has been killing me. Can you suggest some ways to increase the fuel economy of an m54 engine??
I have an issue with my 2001 e46 325ci... when I start the car any the engine is cold, it shakes, sounds like it wants to shut off but, after several seconds, it all smooths out and idles great. Also, from 0-60 it feels sluggish but from 60 on, it feels good. What do you think?
you possibly have a slow/failing leak in your ccv system. namely by your specific problem, its probably your bottom ccv reservoir hose that goes from your reservoir to your dip stick tube. might wanna start checking around in those areas. before its gets worse and unintentionally expensive.
Hi my E38 728I is making such a screeming noise from this box at 189,000 miles its screeching loud now i know im going to ghange the hole unit 2 x tork screws is easier X8R company is near me so ill just buy the full unit £55 , deliverd .

I have a 04 330ci I have replaced the DISA 😂valve twice. Looks like I'm doing it again. I have a rattle. I've replaced disa 2x, MAF2x, purge, gas cap air idle control valve, plugs, coils, and fuel injectors. It's starts rough and only stays running if spray starting fluid in maf. When I stop it quits running. When I unplug the maf I have no throttle. But runs decent. I have a slew of codes that's why I've replaced what I have. I haven't disconnected the battery yet to reset the codes. Any ideas? Please help. I'm beginning to see a bong fire.
Dude, I’ve been looking (over the last 9 months) for an expert explanation of the disa. My e46 was gutless at low and high rpm. Otherwise it runs beautifully. No rattling. I suspected the Disa. I bought a repair kit. $49. USD but have not yet installed it. Do you you think I should replace the whole Disa instead or try the kit? Thanks for this excellent detailed vid! 👍
I did repair it. Didn’t solve my limp mode. My grandson inherited it. Took it to a BMW specialist shop and they could figure it out. He eventually had someone repair it but codes are still there. Waiting to get the details from him. Cheers!
I have an important question how do i change my ccv valve to custom or make it like m50 engine had so much less problems with this setting ?? My english sucks i know
so my disa seems in good shape expect it doesn't move or close when i close it and put my thumb over the little hole and the flap just opens freely it doesn't hold like in other videos i apply +12/- on the terminal and it only makes clicking sound once doesn't move or close. should i replace the whole unit? i get very rought idle and lack of power.
A piece of plastic fell off my disa into the manifold. I guess all I can do is hope that piece of plastic made it all the way through? Haha :( Was running on 4 cylinders and without MAF plugged in it only misfires over 30% load. Gonna hope the square cm of plastic missing from my old disa is the culprit of my vacuum leak (hoses look fine, upper intake boot is fine and I'm pretty sure lower also (kinda scared to take it off since putting the hose clamps back on and tightening is gonna be a bitch) besides when I taped everything up and blew as hard as I could, it seemed like everything was 100% sealed (slight slight leak out of my tape haha)
Great info . I have a 525i n52b25 ,if noticed big diffrences in preassure when opening oil filler cap Plastic valve cover . Will this be a warning my disa needs either a kit or a new on .
@Sixty4motorsport Hi Michael, I have a problem with my steptronic not going into sports/manual mode. When it's in P I have to wiggle it to the left a little to get it into D and from there I cant push it left to get it into S/M1. Could you suggest a fix or how I can diagnose the problem? I'm not very techical when it comes to cars but I dont mind getting my hands dirty if I have to. Thanks!
Modern auto trans can be a minefield. So many variables. Initially sounds like an issue with your shifter (you shouldn't have to 'wiggle things' to get them to work properly). But - it could also be an electronic problem. Investigate further around the shifter and inspect as many of the mechanisms that you can see to look for worn or loose bits. Also get it up on jack stands and further investigate under the car. If nothings obvious you will probably have to take it to a specialist.
oh man, thanks for that explanation. Ive often wondered what the disa does. a friend of mine here in japan, had his disa fail and the parts went inside the engine, causing catastrophic failure. is that rare? i have a 2000 320 with only 50k miles on the clock (84k kilometers). Should I just go ahead and changed the Disa? I just replaced the throttle body, ICV and MAF sensor. One more question: Im beginning to smell some gas in the engine compartment. The odor makes its way into the cabin when the fan is on, but it goes away as I drive and returns after I switch off the engine. Im thinking the culprit may be leaky injector seals? Am I on to something?
@@chadriddle3517 you know, you were right. I replaced all the injectors with brand new ones, but the smell is still there. took to the bmw dealer here in kobe and they said its the purge valve.
