After countless hours of searching online and messing with my e46 I finally got rid of p0171 and p0174. Problems I had were all small vacuum lines were dry rotted, valve cover gasket and disa gasket needed to be replaced, intake boots were cracked, fuel filter was clogged, and the ccv lower oil vent hose was broken. After all that and two drive cycles I got all monitors ready with no codes. I noticed it’s easier to set monitors when using cruise control than by trying to hold a steady speed with your foot.

Your E46 diy tutorials are the best and have helped me fix a salvage pos 2001 325i nightmare that someone conned my mom into buying and rebuild it into an actual decent and reliable daily driver that passes smog. Excellent video! An automotive diagnostic smoke machine is your best tool for finding these leaks. Disconnect the boot from the MAF and send smoke through the boot. This test the entire intake system and will show any gross leaks easily, although it may not show all vacuum leaks. Also know a dirty or aftermarket air filter esp on an E83 X3 with M54 can also cause lean mixture faults. And don't forget the fuel filter. Good fuel pressure doesn't necessarily mean good flow.

This is one of the better videos on this subject, but it too fails to mention a pretty common source of the vacuum leak. On the underside of the intake manifold, pointing to the rear, there are three nipples that are used as attachments for vacuum lines on some BMW models but not others. On many models, the nipples are covered by rubber caps. With time and heat the caps can crack and leak, or even fall off, thus creating an even bigger leak. Check these first. If this is the problem as it was on mine, it is a 5 minute $0.50 fix.

Excellent video. Let me add one more thing to look for on the list of potential air leaks.
I have a 2003 Z4, 2.5 engine. It would throw "system too lean" codes, both banks. I isolated the problem to times when it was idling. That usually points to vacuum leaks. After repeated inspections of every hose even remotely associated with the intake system downstream of the MAF I could never find the leak. What I did find, ultimately, is a small black plastic pipe sticking out of the rear of the intake manifold. It is clearly meant to be used as a vacuum source, but it is not used for anything in my car. It is meant to be capped, (or plugged in some fashion )but the cap had fallen off, allowing a substantial stream of air directly into the intake manifold. I capped the pipe and the codes went away. A $0.05 part after 20 hours of looking.

My p0171 and p0174 codes were triggered by the DISA valve flap armature (white hollow lever under the small black triangular cover) that snapped and since its hollow on the inside was letting enough vacuum by to trigger the codes. I'm shocked since the hole was only 3mm in diameter but it did trip the codes and made the idle stumble a little.

Didnt realize that ms45 cars had the IAT built into the MAF. Pretty interesting. Only thing to mention would be that some cars have a line running from the fuel rail down to that cap on the ccv, so if the cap is missing, it could be that the line has rotted away, or popped off.

Disa valve has that plastic flap which wears out, but more importantly it’s got a membrane in that vacuum valve which goes bad often creating vacuum leak even if you sealed actual monifold to disa connection. Replacing flap and membrane or entire 300$ disa valve is a must after 10yrs

Great video which helps me troubleshoot my code issues in simple layman terms (awesome). If you could do a video on codes P0491 & P0492 and the common issues related to those codes would be very helpful too. Thanks

I just found ANOTHER vacuum leak after doing a coolant service... a split vacuum cap, as shown around 11:13.
Only way I detected it was by literally blowing into the brake booster hose and listening for a whoosh!

Hello, Had these codes on my 2006 Ford Five hundred, I recently added a locking gas cap, 2 days later 2 errors came up, p0171 and p0174 engine warning light, l Put the original cap back on PROBLEM SOLVED, no vacuum leak, just a LOCKING GAS CAP THAT WOULD NOT COMPLETELY SEAL.
Same thing happened to another car a Buick.

Gotta 98 E39, got thr code today, said it was the secondary pump. Its fine just i saw hose hanging and i checked it, hose from the bottum of the ccv leading to the dipstick came disconnected. Been having idle issues, Starting, and loss of power while driving, ordered a new ccv and new hoses will be doing the job this weeked.

Thanks for this awesome vid! I have the same issue on '15 BMW X1 and my BMW dealership performed a smoke test which they said found no leak. But they identified the following issues; 1) There is a leak in crankcase system and recommended to replace front crankshaft seal and b) found oil leaking from vacumm pump. Do you think these could be the reasons for the P0171 code? I took my car to my local guy and they said most likely these are irrelevant to the engine code and won't make the sign go away. Would highly appreciate your insights on this matter.

At 9:00 When I have a Cold start I do hear the hissing sound but once engine has warmed up it goes away. Is this the same issue to replace my break booster?

Same problems..2004 325i. P0171 and P0174, replaced fuel pump, ccv , disa valve, intake boots, had oil housing gasket replaced, replaced valve cover gasket(may need to redo) , replaced spark plugs, replaced the belts, had the fan replaced, coolant flushed, radiator replaced, radiator heater and rein hoses replaced .. had the fuel system cleaned out, had both upstream o2 sensors replaced. Car doesn't run run rough nor has a rough idle, cant get rid of these blasted 2 codes

I have a question? I have been a mechanic for 30 years now. Im 48. I have been doing some BMW’s lately. Except that this 2007 750 LI has been kicking my ass lately. I have done the valve cover gaskets 3 x already and they still leak like crazy. The valve covers are good and so are the gaskets. What am i doing wrong? The customer is not as upset as i am because i always come threw except this time and i feel like i failed. Please help.

Caddi Man eiter valve covers have a crack you cant see or the gaskets on the valve cover bolts are dried up

My trusted BMW werks place actually replaced the cover itself as they will warp and never seal even with the brand new and properly fitted gasket. I'd try that route, and make extra sure the gasket is not cinching up during the reinstall. Best of luck!

Could be the failed CCV/oil separator unit - which could result with too much positive crankcase pressure so it blews the gasket at the weakest point...
P.S. Original BMW gaskets and other rubber parts from dealer are made of much greater quality rubber.

Thank you! Great video. Question... I have a presumed vacuum leak and on the old manifold where you point out where the intake air temperature sensor goes, I noticed I do not have a sensor there, but rather a plug that is the same shape as the sensor with an o-ring. The "plug" is cracked and warn. Do you know what the "plug" is called? I cannot find a part number or name anywhere. Thank you again!

i had p0172 & p0175 rich fuel codes. i did all the checks and nothing until one day i checked the coolant level of the radiator and it was low. once i filled and service engine light went off. so i cleared the codes and now just came back from passing the inspection. it seems that the car was trying to keep it cool the engine so less air was being send to the engine which resulted in the rich fuel mix.

What could cause power issues along with these codes out of everything? I know the disa could be one, and the general system running lean, but which failing system would result in power loss?
