    I have 2 of the Hobie kayaks. Full fishing set up with sails everything! They're a ton of money but worth every penny.
    If you want one, get one! Here's a little advice. You don't have to use your entire leg to peddle. Just use your feet. You'll see. You'll go just as fast but with 1/4 the energy if you're not using sails. What a fun STABLE kayak. Love them

      Outperforms most rotomolded HDPE plastic pedal kayaks on the market. Better speed, super efficient to pedal and reach nice cruising speeds, super tight turning radius, less than half the weight, better weight capacity, and more! I want the iTrek 9 so bad. It was my favorite. So fast and effortless to pedal. Stable for seriously sight casting and fishing all day. I’m just so darn impressed. Not even remotely concerned about durability. I’ve owned inflatables. Never had leak and I bounced mine off oysters and left inflated in Florida sun for months. I’ve bought 15+ inflatables for friends and family and no one has had issues. I would use the heck out of an iTrek 9....just so dang convenient and effortless to get on the water.

    Inflate looks nice and simple to use. Would be easy to launch from my dock at my home. Can store it out of the weather and sun. Sun is a killer on plastics left outside. Rubber, Gelcoat etc can't hold up. Because you could roll these up and store them is nice.
    To much electronics on some and just go fishing and enjoy. Don't need sidescan etc.

    I’m looking at the Hobie lynx 11 vs itrek 11. I’m wondering about the longevity “hull” lifespan of these. And if you could buy either one of these which one would you get for open lakes. Where I fish there ms a lot of jet skiing go on which makes for a little white capping. I currently have a Jackson cruiseFD but they are 90# empty and I’m having to truck top them on a 3500 which is pretty high. I have Hullavators to help me but still 90# is quite a bit to lift. I pull a camper and my truck bed is pretty full but I can probably put inflatable kayaks on top of my bed cover. Which one has a longer lifespan?

      Not sure about these new models, but I have had a Hobie pursuit kayak (paddle only version) for at least 15 years and I can tell you that they are well-made. I have paddled mine in Pacific swells along the SoCal coast, including Catalina Island many times. Getting thru surf can be a challenge, depending on how big the break is, but I used to tow it out with a bowline in my wetsuit on big, cold days. I think of I upgrade sgain, I'll probably go with an inflatable. They are just too light and durable not to take serious any more!
    From this early sort of preview, I get the feeling iCAST is going to be awesome this year...if they have it.
    I don't know what the problem is with people picking up their trash. I'm always finding those plastic bags that hooks come in, beer cans floating or bait cups (here, some still have live crickets in them!) It makes me angry. My father always told me that it's my duty to clean the water if I can, as a sort of fee for being able to use it for free. I only wish everyone were raised like that!

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey bud! Thanks for dropping by the channel.
      I hate seeing trash in waterways. I figure maybe by doing giveaways associated with trash clean ups we can create a habit or trend. I know many do it already. More that do it the better. We can’t afford a lifetime of letting the next person pick up the trash we see in our waters.
      I agree iCAST will be freaking awesome.

    Last year I bought the Hobie PA12 360 and have loaded it with all kinds of accessories. I love fishing from it more than a boat. But, my wife can't go out with me. This new Itak looks great. She doesn't fish much, but we were talking about a paddle board but I was worried I would be spending most my time making sure she didn't get in trouble (we are both in our 60s) I don't even know if she would like a paddle board or sit down configuration. I would love to find somewhere she could rent or test one of these when available to give it a try.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I can tell you is fully pumped up they are rigid and don’t feel at all like an inflatable. The chair is very comfortable for me and I’m 6ft 2in and 210lbs, the drive is really easy to pedal and fast on the inflatables, the steering is super responsive and better than most rotomolded plastic kayaks I have tested.
      You would want a car 12v pump to inflate, but aside from that you likely would have a blast. I just always use a 12v pump because I’m spoiled. However, I’ve pumped up similar inflatables by hand in past.
      Maybe can find a dealer with an iTrek to try.

Going to be a great year since I am a lot more comfortable on it after gaining experience last year. @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lower weight, tighter turning radius, it felt equally as fast, and I felt just as stable on it. So to me the iTrek 9 was better choice if it were my money. To me the whole benefit of an inflatable is extreme portability. The iTrek 9 does that better in my opinion and it seemed to sacrifice nothing in terms of performance. I really liked it. I liked the iTrek 11, but the iTrek 9 is more portable and felt just as fast and stable but with noticeable better turn radius.

      At 20lbs that iTrek 9 was so freaking awesome. We pedaled all around the island with it. I truly was in shock with how well it performed. It actually performs better than many rotomolded plastic pedal kayaks. Excellent stability, fast and near effortless to pedal, & the most responsive steering I have experienced on nearly any pedal kayak. • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the dropstiched inflatable material paddleboards and kayaks like the iTrek series are very durable in my opinion. I’ve owned similar constructed dropstiched inflatable paddle boards and we abuse them. I left mine inflated for 4 months in the FLORIDA heat...not recommended....but it survived with no issues. I then took that same inflated paddleboard and ran it over with my truck at least 5 times to prove a point on durability. I also have bumped into razor sharp oysters regularly on my dock/seawall with the same board. That is my honest opinion on dropstitched inflatables like Hobie iTrek series. My friends and I love our inflatables. In terms of taking better care of the inflatables....I recommend for intermittent use storage just partially deflate and keep out of direct sunlight. Then it should last a very long time. If I want to transport in a car trunk then I fully deflate and put in bag. Even if you had to repair one I feel it would be easier than repairing a plastic kayak. I haven’t had to repair one yet though. I have bought at least 10-15 iSUPs for family and friends. They are all built similar to the iTrek and are dropstiched.

      I think it would do fine in current...maybe even better than many rotomolded kayaks. I have used inflatable paddleboards in current and the pedal drive is more powerful than paddling. I bet the iTrek would do fine on current. We paddle incoming and outgoing tides as well as rivers a lot.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been on a wide array of high end kayaks in similar conditions. The iTreks are still SIGNIFICANTLY better in performance and responsiveness in steering/tight turn radius. The effort in pedaling to get up to speed is less. The turning radius and responsiveness is better. They are 100% better than other rotomolded pedal kayaks on same water/wind conditions. Those of us who tested them those few days were quite shocked. I’ve owned and tested every major pedal kayak on the market. Native with Boondox rudder may be great, but even with that popular mod I truly think the iTrek 9 in particular out performs.
      Just my opinion. That is what all my videos are. The iTrek series was just so dang impressive. The iTrek 9 was my favorite and quite possibly my favorite pedal kayak period for performance. It might not surf launch great due to bow width/shape, but in every other aspect I’m really diggin it.

      How about long distance? That is where I find the bicycle type motion better on my legs because I can simply slide my seat farther away from the pedals, lay back and now I'm using the back of my legs more to pedal. Move closer to the pedals, and I am using more the front of my legs.
      Aren't you more limited to the same constant motion with the constant push push of the Hobie type drive?
      Native reverse is much easier as well because you simply pedal backwards with no levers to push. That feature saved me and my dog once on Lake Marion when a large alligator surfaced in a creek right in front of us. My Yellow Lab was riding on the back and it was pretty scary when it started chasing us with me in reverse full bore. The gators lower their heads and body in the water as they are coming for you until all you see are the big round eyeballs coming thru the water.
      I have never pedaled a Hobie type drive very far though so I could be wrong.

      When we were in testing phase, I took the ultralight on a family trip to Aruba and took it out to go look for grouper. I made it about two miles out to a nice looking edge when the wind came up and I was in 4-5s within minutes. Wind there is super hard to predict. Aside from getting absolutely drenched, I still made a few drops before bailing and heading in and caught a few odd fish I'd never seen before. The combination of the roller bag it comes with, a collapsed h-crate, inflatable pfd and some travel rods make it easy to fish anywhere around the world.

      You are absolutely right. In wind and waves my 2019 Hobie Outback doesn't handle worth a darn unless you're moving fast. If you want to turn moving slow use your paddle. I keep a one handed paddle handy for small adjustments. Love the rest of the boat but even in calm weather it is not a very responsive rudder. I just ordered an aluminum replacement rudder so I hope that will help.

    Too bad the iTrek series doesn’t offer the 360 paddle system, which would help compensate for the lack of reverse peddling capability on the iTrek. I disagree with your analysis that the tight turning radius compensates for the lack of reverse peddling because there are times when you can get yourself stuck in a situation where you get too close tree roots and the shore such that you don’t have a turning radius and you need a rapid reverse. Imagine kayaking on a Florida river, you get close into the bank surrounded by tree roots and tree branches and there is little to no maneuver room on your sides and suddenly a gator slides off the bank and starts towards you, you want to reverse track and get the hell out of there…you want reverse peddling and fast.

      I have on mine, used a esky/cooler/ice box whatever you call it whereever you are, a cutting, and some straps. Have an inflatable railblaza mount on it, but it is showing signs of lifting - due to placement basically - its near where I fold my kayak up. I put it behind me, and use for a flag or rod holder. Fish finder is in front to my right. More setup time, but also can take it down, and take it overseas, on ferries etc. I have taken mine overseas, to little islands, on ferries, in small cars. I live in a CBD, and use a fold up bike to tow mine to a boat ramp 4kms away (no place suitable closer). I have been in rough seas before, and it is very stable, only felt like almost coming off once, and that was in big swell after a cyclone had passed by.

    Great video, love the inflatable, but Hobie prices their products far above what the average person can afford. I purchased a Lifetime Tamarac Angler 100 for $300, added a used Expandacraft outrigger for $100 and added a Walmart 40 lbs. Thrust trolling motor for $150, so for $550 I have the perfect and very stable fishing machine.....

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Durability and quality of the lifetime products is far inferior to Hobie and many other brands. HOWEVER, that doesn’t negate the fact that I bet you have a pretty sweet setup. Also doesn’t negate the fact that they have some pretty decent deals for kayaks. They just aren’t even remotely the same quality or caliber of craft in my opinion. I’m a big fan of the Expandacraft product. I have tossed around several ideas utilizing Expandacraft. Mostly looking at building compact sailing rig for long distance camping trips in the Gulf coast.

We usually see more cormorants in that area so guess I assumed it was one at a glance. My in-laws live about 300ft from that dock and we always talk about the Cormorants crapping on their boat. Haha.
      It is true though about cormorant fishing in China. Just misidentified that particular bird. 👍👍

    I can give you 5000 reasons not to buy a hobie. For those that don't understand, 5000 bucks gets you a really heavy pedal boat. 4000 bucks got me a gheenoe 154, 15 hp yamaha, bow mounted trolling motor, trailer, fish finder which were all BRAND NEW!!! I can launch this boat anywhere and don't need a boat ramp. It is truly a back water assassin. 30mph with one dude. 25mph with 2 dudes. Push pole it, paddle it, motor it, and use the electric motor for the bulk of fishing. Drafts 4 inches. I stand and sight fish from the seats. Stability is insanely awesome. I don't get the fascination of spending 5000 bucks on a fishing boat that goes 3mph. There are so many better options out there. Hell, a 2-3 hp honda costs about 800 bucks and will smoke any hobie and it's only 20-30 pounds. A trailer brand new costs 500-750 bucks brand new. So many small boat options that blow a hobie away for fishing. I tow my gheenoe with my ford escape.....28mpg highway driving.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t really argue other than a Gheenoe doesn’t have self bailing deck for offshore safety. Gheenoes are freaking cool though and I love them for everything else. I just wish they could get a self bailing deck somehow built in on the gheenoes so bilge didn’t need to work overtime on choppy days. I like the SunCoastSkiff Matau which is a blend of a Gheenoe and paddleboard with outboard. It has a self bailing deck. I only wish the gunnels extended back slightly farther for securing gear on trips or rod storage. I’m still a big fan of Hobie kayaks though. They are expensive, but the lead in the innovation and I have had a blast on the ones I owned. Just comes down to personal taste and preference.

    • @mikeyG11556

I don't know? Perhaps? Still gonna only go out on calm days.

      Actually my friends and I use inflatables a ton in saltwater and we have countless oysters on my dock and pilings. Never had a leak or concerning damage yet.
      I thought the same as you until my neighbor got me into trying them. Then I bought them for myself and my family members. My neighbor left his inflated in florida sun for months, he hit oysters all the time. I then have bought probably around 15 inflatables for friends and family. These Hobie iTreks are built even better than the inflatables I have owned.

      Boats require fuel, title transfer, annual registration, a trailer, and quite a bit of space to store it.
      Kayaks let the user fish skinnier water, get a workout, and avoid all those things I mentioned above.
