In 1823, William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it during a school match creating the "rugby" style of play.
Except he didn’t, and the true story of how rugby emerged involved school uprisings, broken shins, and the invention of an origin story.

The student revolt reminds me of the 1968 film 'If' starring Malcolm McDowell. The film may have been another work inspired by historic events at Rugby School.

Excellent research and storytelling. It should be noted that the inventor of Australian Rules Football, Tom Wills was from a wealthy Victorian western districts sheep grazing family and was sent to England for his education ... which school? He was sent to Rugby School and when he returned to Melbourne he is reported to have said something along the lines, "We should invent our own game of football just like they did at Rugby School". Aussie Rules has a few of the characteristics of Rugby such as the mark but it was invented to be played on cricket ovals in the off-season (winter). Also, like those early English games, the first game of Aussie Rules between Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College went for three days on a paddock outside the MCG.

The author, George MacDonald Fraser, wrote a series of historical novels based around the bully from Tom Browns School Days, Harry Flashman. A rollicking read especially for those who enjoy history.

Once you’ve read Tom Brown, read Flashman. The author took a baddie character from Tom Brown and made him an anti-hero. Hilarious and gloriously non-PC. Shagging anything that moves, gambling, cowardice, murder etc
