    Amazing how John Lithgow can be terrifying asf in one role, yet the most friendly and gentle character in another. Truly great actor.

    He has every right to think what he thought. At his age Batman was a gimmick on TV. He had no concept of what the comics transformed into because he was a more than full grown adult. Back then adults didn't read comics. Some did. But most didn't.

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      At the time Burton was making it, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS was only 4 years old. The effect it was having hadn't been noticed yet by people outside the comic book world.

    • @sinjin4563
      @sinjin4563 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It wasn't about his age specifically. Millenial nerds hadn't taken over with their idea of Batman being serious then in the 80's. It was still just a gimmick on TV like you said. The idea that there would be theatrical movie was too obscure. It's not a movie that an actor seriously would have wanted to be in, like Pee Wee's Playhouse or something.

    • @swiftslick
      @swiftslick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, it's because the vision everyone had in their heads when you said "Batman" was the campy, goofy tv show with Adam West. It had nothing to do with adults reading or not reading comics. Serious actors don't seek out trash roles for their careers. At the time, The Joker wasn't seen as a significant role to tackle.

    He would make an excellent older Joker for a storyline like the Dark Knight Returns. He can turn on that sadistic terrifying killer persona that few actors can believable. Just watch Dexter.

    He's done the best Churchill I've ever seen. His work as a Shakespearean actor has thrilled me. And his portrayal of a serial killer in "Dexter" was the most chilling I've ever seen. He takes any role, runs with it & makes it golden. He's wildly entertaining on talk shows. AND I love him as a person.

    1. John Lithgow was in Terms of Endearment with Jack Nicholson, who was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon.
    2. John Lithgow was in The Campaign with Will Ferrell, who was in Anchorman with Steve Carell, who was in Crazy, Stupid, Love with Kevin Bacon.
    3. John Lithgow was in Shrek with Cameron Diaz, who was in Gangs of New York with Leonardo Dicaprio, who was in Catch Me if you Can with Tom Hanks, who was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon.

    So turning down playing as the Joker because of thinking no-one would watch a Batman movie. Batman movies along with other superhero movies become extremely popular and then the joke is on him for not playing as the Joker.

    • @elmagnificodep
      @elmagnificodep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the Joker kills Batman’s parents in that version so they needed someone older than Batman. Michael Keaton would have been too young.

    • @KaizerMan
      @KaizerMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keaton was better as Batman than Joker both at a young age and older age. Even now if he’s playing a villain it’s better when the villain is Vulture than Joker.
      I’d much rather him play an old Dark Knight Returns Bruce Wayne rather than old Joker, and likewise I’m glad he played young Batman and not young Joker.
