    I used this technique to make a 5x5 variant. I did 5 different logs but rather than a checkerboard I spelled out "PROM?". Worked well, she said yes and they were delicious.

    My hubby and I made these for our daughter’s cookie table for her wedding 3 years ago...I did the mixing/baking and he did the geometry! They turned out very nicely and we received lots of compliments!

    Wow, this is a really hard and long way to do this cookie. It could be so so simpler. Why didn't you layer the slabs straight from the cling film then cut instead of doing the individual strips?..

    • @TheBlueFlameKitchen
      @TheBlueFlameKitchen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Petkel1987 Thanks for the great question! We find that our method is the least error-prone way to cut the dough. While you could stack the layers for cutting, the dough is quite fragile and will break apart if the layers stick together. Carefully separating the strips would take a fair bit of time to do correctly, which erodes away at any time saved by stacking. Also, it’s far easier to make a precise cut all the way through one layer instead of through two or more layers. If the strips of dough aren’t precisely the right width, the cookies will look misshapen. Considering that the risk of ruining the cookies with an imprecise cut is significant, it’s better to take the time and therefore we suggest this method.

    wow that's a whole lotta unnecessary work. ditch the ruler and the unsightly squashing, and breaking up, of the rectangle block... make 2 rectangular blocks. slice in three lengthwise, swap the middle, slice again lengthwise and swap the middle again, the cut crosssections.

    My dad and I made these, and they're unexpectedly exactly like a softer shortbread cookie. If you want them very crisp like an average shortbread cookie at fine minutes to the bake time and let them stand for five minutes as mentioned in the recipe.

      You don't have to do it like this. You can just estimate cutting it in a rectangle switch the middle cut into 3pieces again and then switch the middle and then cut them. This is only if u want them to be PERFECT

      +ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen Following the recipe, I successfully made the butter mixture, but after I finished pouring my flour in, I didn't get a dough, but a bowl of powdery stuff when all the ingredients are mixed together. I transferred it into a plastic bag and rolled it into a dough, but it could hardly hold its shape. I wonder if the wet ingredients in the recipe are too few ... just an egg yolk and a teaspoon of vanilla? Are those enough?

    • @jonathanbaker247
      @jonathanbaker247 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eshal Zafar Well these cookies are small. They're sliced off a long log one by one, so of course it yields a lot. I guess each one of these is only half the size of a chocolate chip cookie.

    • @hinatanin
      @hinatanin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jonathan, traditionally this kind of cookie is made with flour, butter and sugar, no baking soda or baking powder involved. this is also the reason these sugar cookies don't spread as much as for example chocolate chip cookies normally do.

    Would it be OK if I make the dough and put it in the fridge overnight instead of baking on the same day?
    I'm thinking of making a batch but won't have time to make from scratch in 1 day...
    Would the dough dry out if I don't get to bake the dough on the same day I make them?

    • @hinatanin
      @hinatanin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes! I do that all the time. the dough won't dry out if you wrap it in plastic wrap. Make your life easier and colour the black part before putting it in the fridge, otherwise you'd have to work the cocoa in later, and then chill the dough again.
