When this song came out in the 90's, all of us Native Americans were so excited on the ending when the guy started singing because it was so close to our songs.
@@RullVoxI don’t think she was talking about Dolores’ keening but about the tribal chanting that comes on around 9:50 all the way till the end. I don’t know if that’s a guy or a girl chanting but it sounds tribal, that’s why @SassyIndian said “it was close to our songs.”
I'm 51 and truly miss the 90s and being in my twenties. The Cranberries were a huge part of my life back then musically. Since Dolores passed, I shed a tear almost every time I hear her sing!
Enigma used a traditional tribal recording from the Amis people of Taiwan without their permission and had to settle with the singers out of court and pay royalties.
I saw The Cranberries live in Camden, NJ at an outside concert on a beautiful summer night. Dolores bounced around that stage like a Superball. Such amazing energy! It was a fantastic show, and I’m thankful I got to experience it. RIP.
Dolores O'Riordan. Such an ethereal, other-worldly voice and presence. Beautiful. I remember our family got her first CD for Christmas, 1994, "No Need to Argue." We listened to that cd until we knew every song well. Thanks, BP! Such a wonderful reminder of a special, creative human.
I purchased a diskman and all the Cranberries albums before a deployment, thier music helped me fall asleep every night instead of thinking of all the crap going on and being away from the family.
When I hear this song I think of being deployed to Haiti in 95 or 96 listening to a buddy's diskman watching the waves on the ocean come to shore while this song was playing. Your comment brings me right back to that moment.
This was used as the theme song for a fantastic Irish comedy/drama series called Derry Girls, about a bunch of Irish Catholic school girls (and one English guy) in the early 90s and dealing with the political turmoil of that time. It's so good.
A bunch of Irish women got together and recorded a version of this in tribute to her. Please react to that. It's emotionally cleansing and quite beautiful.
Ireland has gifted us with some amazing female vocalists with that uniquely Irish/Celtic style. Before Dolores, though was the wonderful Sinead. You also need to check out more of her 'up tempo' tracks (as you've only listen to - Nothing compares to u). Try some well known examples like - "Mandinka"; "Troy"; "Jersualem" etc......
Im irish and we love this song. its not just a song its a feeling. millions of love songs in the world. but not many songs get u in the feels that make u feel what they sing. plus im drinking guiness too so its twice the song 😛
When I hear the Cranberries I get a little bummed because we lost Delores so soon. This is such a great song and her voice is iconic. She can belt out some tunes. That Irish keening is so special as were so many of their songs. The band is very talented but Delores gets most of the attention because her voice is so beautifully unique. Great memories of the 90's from their music. Keening is a Gaelic Celtic wailing used to mourn the dead in Ireland & Scotland. It is so beautiful!
That style of wailing is tribal indeed, common to Scots and Irish Gaelic/Celtic culture, and used most often in funerals and such. It is called "keening" and pretty much died out by the end of the 19th century, but is preserved for its cultural significance.
This is a banger and played at my sons funeral which one of the younger undertakers favourites and thanked me for playing it... back in December 1999. My son absolutely loved The Cranberries, and Enya, Kate Bush, Bjork, Porteshead (sp?) Thankfully he had superb taste in music.. he was a great person.
both the cranberries and the smashing pumpkins are two of my favorite bands. i'd say theyre similar because like....all the members add something to the music that just doesnt sound right if you take it away
The Cranberries - Ode To My Family pleassseee - it's so sweet and nostalgic ;) Sinead O'Connor - The Foggy Dew 1995 live with the Chieftains is most definitely worth checking out as well;)
Those unique vocals are known as “Keening”. This is my favourite song from the Cranberries BP, thanks for featuring it. Gerry Rafferty uses many different musical instruments such as Irish Pipes and the like in his music as well. His track “North and South” gives a great example of his musical diversity, regrettably it’s never been reacted to on YT, and my Fav “Get it right next time”, ‘oh the sax’.
Great reaction brother, I am from Ireland and I love the Cranberries. There exists (on TH-cam) a video of Delores singing the Fleetwood Mac classic "Go Your Own Way" in a studio at a European radio station. It's a mind blowing performance, her voice is so powerful that she to hold the mic about half a mile away from her mouth. Check it out, you won't regret it. It's a hidden gem.. Thanks, and all the best from Belfast. ☘️
The Return to Innocence by Enigma was the joint you referred to at the end. Also, spend some time in Ireland and learn their history. The Celts were nomanic tribes. The Cries are called keening which is traditional mourning cries. Theyu actually used to pay people to keen for grieving people. I was lucky enough to see these guys in 1993 when they opened for Duran Duran. Magical to hear her voice in person.
Okay hold onto your hat Peg.. but when Luciano did his famous Luciano Pavarotti and Friends concert and album... one of the duets was Ave Maria with Dolores and it's magical and sublime. Knowing how much you enjoy both of these artists .. it's a MUST for you.. he also sang with Tracy Chapman and fellow Canadians Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. Most of the duets are so awe inspiring. BTW.. Dolores struggled with alcohol for years and years. I believe Whitney and her daughter also perished in the same way. So many lost like that.. it's very sad.
Sean Nos is the ancient Irish style of singing that seems to be an influence on modern Irish singers when they perform this way. Van Morrison does this in a number of records too. Irish still sing actual Sean Nos songs as well.
Couple of LOLs here. Production value: Cranberries and Smashing Pumpkins were pretty much the at the same stage as indy rock bands when they started making music videos and they chose their producers well. Dolores: Faery. Absolutely. Floor is a Valkyrie, Amy is angelic. Dolores is a cheeky Irish fairy.
It’s crazy to look back and remember when you only had 80k subscribers and looking now at almost 400k. Oh how the time has passed. Much love BP! This songs amazing. I’ve never heard it before! I really enjoyed it to be honest.
I had Cranberries first two CD's on repeat when they came out. Love this band so much. It is more of an art song and never played on the radio, but "Daffodil Lament" is really beautiful......
great reaction. thanks for listening to the cranberries. i would agree with those who posted "ode to my family" as a next watch and listen. regarding her passing, the coroner's report showed that she drowned, accidentally, in a tub in her hotel after driking alcohol. 😥
If you want to hear The Cranberries really kick it's arse I recommend "I Can't Be With You" - not a dry eye in the house. Another huge talent gone too soon. RIP Dolores, hope you found a little peace.
They used the intro here in the UK for the 'Visit Ireland' ads, and there is no better sound to represent it. Every time this song starts, I think of Ireland. They knew what they were doing
It's a freaking blast to get tribal like that! I lived in the mountains for 16 years and our frie8next door had a sweat lodge! We'd have drummings and bonfires and everyone just went nuts. (Tequila was involved 😅)❤
ROBERT, DOLORES O'Riordan when she broke up with the Cranberries she had a hit, Ordinary Day... check it out. The other banger is Miracle of Love by Eurythmics... get the live version of them doing it at an Australia concert.... it's another banger.
Ode to my family is my favourite cranberries song
and Zombie
Yup, "Ode to my family" next.
a stunner
great song
"ethereal". her voice. it floats. breathtaking.
I am an Irish man with the same last name as Delores and I cry every time I hear a Cranberries song.
RIP Delores
Kevin O’Riordan is a *very* Irish name
Cheers from Pole my Irish brother
English Kev does the same :)
A little fairy singing in your ear! I love it! And so true! She has a beautiful voice🧚
So true. Never thought of it like that before.
She was truly a gift, and sadly gone way too soon.
When you've gone. Ode to my family. Two great songs from The Cranberries.
YES....... absolutely these two songs!!!!!! 🥰
When this song came out in the 90's, all of us Native Americans were so excited on the ending when the guy started singing because it was so close to our songs.
Guy? Dolores O'Riordan was singing in an Irish keening style. She was born in Ireland.
Ancient Irish pagan traditions very similar to Native American or African traditions
@@Teresaisall 😅🤣
@@BSu-ym5mothe second voice was her boyfriend Mike Mahoney
Cranberries, Enigma and Enya all have beautiful voices and so calming.
It’s called “keening” the action of wailing in grief for a dead person. It is performed in Irish or Scots Gaelic at wakes or gravesides.
Wow. Tks for the nomenclature. Words matter when ya have to look everything up with 'em. 🎶
I thank you for that information. Read my comment here.... lol... by instinct I played this at my sons funeral.
Have never heard it at a funeral...I've been to alot in my life
How many funerals in Ireland have you been to?
@ does that matter?
I'm 51 and truly miss the 90s and being in my twenties. The Cranberries were a huge part of my life back then musically. Since Dolores passed, I shed a tear almost every time I hear her sing!
Same. Was a great time for music.
That tribal band was Enigma, Return to innocence. You should tackle that one 😊
Love that song
Enigma used a traditional tribal recording from the Amis people of Taiwan without their permission and had to settle with the singers out of court and pay royalties.
I would watch the video. Very cool.

Cranberries Ode To My Family . Awesome song love Dreams
Anymore Cranberries then I am here for it. Love them. RIP Delores.
R.I.P. Dolores, you're greatly missed.
Dolores sang BOTH vocals; lead AND harmony, which is awesome! She was so beautiful, in so many ways. We'll miss her forever.
This was used as the theme song for a fantastic Irish comedy/drama series called Derry Girls, about a bunch of Irish Catholic school girls (and one English guy) in the early 90s and dealing with the political turmoil of that time. It's so good.
I love that they double her voice...her pristine high in the back sounds awesome
A bunch of Irish women got together and recorded a version of this in tribute to her. Please react to that. It's emotionally cleansing and quite beautiful.
It eas done during covid and released for dm refuge charities. Its stunning
This song is so beautiful! RIP Delores. We miss you.

I love this song and Linger. Such vocal control on the Linger song as well
Such a talent, RIP Dolores.
Try "when You're Gone" next. It's great.
When your gone , Ode to my family
Both amazing.
Thank you for doing these reactions
This song always always makes me think of my sister. I used to hear it a lot on the radio when I would visit her. It transports me every time.
There were ads on TV in the late 90s that said "Come visit Ireland", and they used "Dreams" as the music for those ads.
R.I.P. We miss you so much Dolores.

The Cranberries - Ode To My Family - (just beautiful)
The Cranberries - When You're Gone - (after a relationship)
This is a band favorite. I saw several of their concert videos and noticed they always save Dreams for their power- encore.

Free to Decide and Salvation excellent songs by them
It’s the purity of her tones. No auto tune. Whispers that can be thunderous only come from Ireland

Probably their biggest hit, at least as far as my recollection of radio play is concerned.
When You're Gone, Promises, and Just My Imagination are just listen to Cranberries stings
She is so dreamy, literally. Only in thoughts anymore :(
Tinged with lament, this song's insistent propulsion conjures such hope for the future. The perfect song as we near November 5th.
Great voice and a great song. I saw the cranberries twice in 1999, they sounded awesome.
This was used in a commercial for Irish tourism.
For an entirely different kind of vibe, but still one of their great melodies, I suggest you try "Salvation". Have fun!
