There is a lot of backstory connected to this performance. Robert Plant and John Bonham grew up together, Robert became Godfather to John's son Jason. Sadly John (Bonzo) passed in 1980. When Robert learned they were being honored he asked Jason to come as a guest but Jason was already secretly practicing with Heart for the performance and so declined. During the performance Jason is playing his father's drum kit while wearing a bowler hat in honor of John. When the choir comes in at the end they are also wearing the signature hats. Side note: David Letterman was also an honoree that night and is sitting next to them. Dave's wife is the woman who gets so excited when the choir comes out, she is sitting behind Dave. After this night Dave has LZ on his show for an interview and they discuss what happened that night. You can find the entire program as well as the interview on TH-cam. ☮️ ❤️ 🎶 🎸 🎶
Thank you for providing the context to this. When Robert invited Jason to be there, he is reported to have said, "I'm sorry, but I have a previous engagement." For those who don't know, Robert was the lead singer and John Bonham was the drummer. When he died, the band basically ended because they couldn't imagine going on without John. I grew up with Led Zep. I still get tears in my eyes every time I watch this.
@@twentyfiveyears5010 You're so welcome! I grew up with them as well and this performance gets me each time I watch. Not only does it remind me of John but then makes me think of the many other amazing musicians, singer/songwriters we've lost along the way.....😥
Robert Plant's emotions when he realized the entire choir is wearing John Bonham's signature Bowler hats..and his son Jason on drums. Ann 62 years old...just perfect 🥰. Great reaction and Peace out Cliff ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
ME TOO. I can't imagine a better compliment than making the original artists cry from JOY at a cover of their biggest song, which also happens to be a musical masterpiece.
And Jason is paying respect to his father by wearing the bowler hat that his father always wore when he was performing. What a great homage to his dad!!!
The three older men seated in the upper deck are (as you suspected) the surviving members of Led Zeppelin. From left to right, John Paul Jones (man of many instruments), Robert Plant, (lead singer), and Jimmy Page (lead guitar). Their drummer, John Bonham, as mentioned, passed away at age 32 in 1980. It's his son, Jason, wearing the bowler hat, playing drums for the tribute. His Dad wore that kind of hat a lot. Ann and Nancy did a great job, not to mention everyone else on that stage. Great reaction, thanks a lot for letting us watch with you. God bless you and yours!
I think Jimmy was playing every note along with Shane Fontayne that night. Props to Fontayne who did a fabulous job. I could not imagine having to play in front of the Mage himself!

I highly recommend Led Zeppelin live at Madison Square Gardens (1973), Stairway To Heaven. This song over 50 years old, is still voted the number one Rock Song. The Wilson sisters told Howard Stern that they had only one rehearsal before performing in front of the surviving members of Led Zeppelin. They idolize Led Zeppelin and they had a real fear of falling on their faces in front of them. They were very nervous. Ann Wilson in an interview afterwards: "Robert Plant said to me ‘Oh my God, I’ve grown to hate that song so much because everybody murders it so badly. But you guys did great!’ " He called their cover "spectacular" and "magnificent."
The drummer, Jason Bonham, is the son of LZ’s original drummer, John “Bonzo” Bonham, who is still hailed as possibly the greatest rock drummer of all time (see “Moby Dick”). Jason had been invited by the band members to attend this ceremony with the band. Little did the band know that he had already been booked to perform this song with the Wilson sisters. Jason declined the invite without being specific about his previous commitment so as to keep it a surprise to the band. An extended version of this performance shows Jason being introduced and the delight and surprise on Robert Plant’s face. Truly a magical performance.
Jason Bonham, the drummer, is the son of John Bonham the original drummer for LZ. When John died, the band basically stopped recording. Jason wore his dad's hat, and the second choir wore replicas in honor of John. Yes, LZ was in house.😊 The silver haired fox was the guitarist. This is the most epic tribute to Led Zepplin. Ann Wilson has such an awesome voice. I've watching this video so many times because it has heart and soul - no pun intended. I grew up in the 70s and this was a staple song. Every year the radio station on either Memorial Day or Labor Day would play the top 100 rock songs and Stairway to Heaven was always #1. I do think that as much as I love the original, I actually love this version more because of the passion they played this with. Plus Ann's voice is killer. I also always see the lead guitarist as looking like Sheldon Copper from Big Bang but also think how hard it must have been to perform Jimmy's guitar solo in front of him.

The original creators of this world rock anthem are Led Zeppelin and they are the ones being honoured. The drummer for this version is Jason Bonham, son of John "Bonzo" Bonham, Zep's drummer who died in 1980. Those who perform this version are Nancy (guitar) and Ann (vocals) Wilson, members of the duo Heart, very successful in the 80s.
Heart first covered this song, live, back in 1976 at The Aquarius Club in Seattle. Back when Heart was an actual 6 member band and not just Ann & Nancy Wilson. In a 1981 interview with Rolling Stone, Jimmy Page stated that they have passed the Zeppelin torch onto Heart.

Check out Dazed and Confused (studio). It’s one of my favorite Led Zeppelin masterpieces.
You have to hear the original, now!!
Your mom and dad did a great job raising you! You are a great individual!
The greatest cover of any song by any band imo! You should read the lyrics of the song. Also the greatest song ever written.
You’re doing great!
I love this so much
Must watch Led Zepplin version
