Building A DIY Pipe Cutting Edge For Our Kubota BX Snowblower

  • I've finally gotten around to building the new cutting edge for our Kubota BX tractor and the front mount snowblower we use to clear snow from our driveway. The original cutting edge was likely to dig into the soft ground in the spring and fall, which would lead to breaking a ton of shear pins.
    THis pipe cutting edge will ride easier over loose rocks and gravel, and will save wear and tear on the snowblower in the long run. It was easy to build and with a few tweeks, should be easy to take on and off.

    So I tired out your idea here, cut slit in a 48" long 1/2 inch diameter pounded it on and spot welded it on each end and center to cutting edge. Works fabulous on my tz25da with 54" front blower. I'm just amazed. Thanks for the idea!

    Just some future advice with your grinder.... don`t plunge cut with it, it will eat up your wheels in no time. Work your grinder like a file, forwards and backwards.
    Just make a single groove in the metal with the cutting blade, your grinding wheels will last 10 times longer. And less wear-n-tear on the grinder/motor/battery, too.

    I have the same grinder and love it. When I started watching I thought, "Man, cutting that slot is going to eat up some batteries". I only have a few 3 amp batteries, but they are almost 8 years old and still perform pretty well. Nice job, Jack!

    That horizontal slice looked like a pain! For tools like grinders I always go corded. The extra power is nice. And since it's not a tool I use often, or remote, it works out ok. 90% of the time I use it I'm in the shop or garage

      New chordless grinders are freikin game changers though. Milwaukee one is every bit as good as a chorded one. Just keep a spare battery or 2 on hand depending on the size of your job.

    I have the same Dewalt grinder it started to make a little noise so I removed the 4 screws and removed the plastic cover over the angle drive there was VERY,VERY little grease on the angle drive gears so I re-greased it and the noise went away .. I actually have 2 Dewalt and 1 Makita cordless grinders so checked the other 2 and they both didn't have much grease in the head ..

    Although my blower is a different model to lessen the occurrence of gravel entering into blower in addition to lowering the shoes I had welded 1/4" × 4" stock with both ends turned up and then in my case reversing direction. So they extend a little more out front yes I do leave a little more snow on the driveway but I seem to hit less stones

  • @jrsmyth9761

    To help keep it on, what about drilling a few holes, tapping/threading them and then running a bolt through them and onto the blower. Use a nut/double nut on the bolt to keep it in place

    Thanks for the idea of putting a pipe on The cutting edge of the snow blower. I have a Rock drive that I use with a walk behind snowblower. The snow blower always grabs rocks and throws them. I just got done putting a pipe on the cutting edge of my walk behind snowblower. I'm thinking I probably won't have as much problems with rocks being thrown out of my drive this upcoming winter.
    Thanks for Michael 👍

      I just got a chance to use the pipe modification on my walk behind snowblower today and it definitely helped from picking rocks from the drive and throwing them. There still was some but not very much compared to what it used to be. Bonus for me when I use the walk behind snowblower on my concrete sidewalks it actually cleans more of the snow off the sidewalk because I have the skid plates raised as high as they can go. Only one thing would be better if my drive was more level, don't have a tractor to level it I got the nice big hump in the driveway. Thanks for sharing Michael

    Cut the pipe 2” longer on each end. Cut the 2” over hang in half. Pound the overhang halves flat with a 3 pound hammer. Drill 1/2” holes in the overhang tabs. Anneal them with a torch and bend them upward with a hammer. Hook the hooks into the ear tabs them ratchet strap it over the shroud of the blower. That will keep it fully out of the way and free from wearing out.

    I understand why, with a gravel driveway you would do this, but the cutting edge serves an actual purpose to cut into the snow, as your blowing. Now that it has a rounded off edge how will it cut into hard packed snow? I get it could be a life saver in terms of letting gravel into the blower. I just think it might be harder to get that wet packed hard snow into the blower without it being obstructed by the pipe. Idk just my thoughts. Cool idea though.

    So, I just cut two old steam heat pipes from our house for a Kubota snow blade and the snow blower. Steel pipes were over 130+ years old. Each I cut a 3/4" opening to go over the snow blade and the snow blower. I started the fist pipe with the grinder and cutting wheel. 8" in and had to replace the wheel. I grabbed my Milwaukee saws-all, old plug in model and a Milwaukee "Torch" blades. About 15 minutes per cut, X2 cuts, X4 blades and I was done. No sparks, way straighter. Why does everyone use cut off wheels? I have cordless and corded, I get the cordless, but sometimes it just does not make sense.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was what I had at the time. I wasn’t going to buy a reciprocating saw just to make this cut.
      Also, I believe, if I remember correctly, that I made this whole cut with only one cutoff wheel that was already pretty worn down. Cold rolled black pipe is pretty soft.
      Which makes me wonder. Is the steam pipe you used cast? If so,be careful with the snowblower. I intentionally used cold rolled black pipe, as it will bend and not break if it hits a rock. A cast pipe runs the risk of breaking and getting sucked in if you hit something hard enough. Not saying for sure that’s what you had, but it’s something to consider.
      Edit: After thinking on it a bit, I’m confident you did use cast iron pipes, which would explain how quickly your cutoff wheels wore out. Cast iron is very hard, but very brittle. I would not use it on a cutting edge due to the chance of it breaking.

    • @chocolyle1216
      @chocolyle1216 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jack, the pipe is steel, just really old steel. Not claiming my way was better, just an alternative. I have used the Milwaukee "Torch" blades for a while now, just never let me down. Your ideas on the snow blower pipe gave me the idea to do the same on the plow. I did the PVC pipe one year, though it worked great it fractured really quick. I'm glad I went back and watched your 2 (?) videos on the metal pipe idea. Quick on, quick off. I have a lot of sidewalks here in Manchester, CT but also a stone driveway and need to make paths to the animals shelters.@@TheMindfulHomestead
