That's a very helpful video, and a good idea to lay the string against the wall in the box, so it helps pushing the peg in direction to the center by itself. Clever! Thanks.
Over 30 years of practice 🎻🙂 You get pretty good at it after a while. Also if the pegs fit well and are lubricated correctly it can be much easier. Keep at it... You will get faster after some time 🙂
@@AskOlaftheViolinmaker over 30 years, huh? Dang, that's a really long time! And hopefully I will get better, that would sure make playing a lot easier!
My pegs are tight. They are so tight I can barely move them to tune, by the time I have enough torque to make the peg move, it moves too much. So then I'm back and forthing to try to get the string in tune. I've also noticed that as I pizz or bow across the notes are changing slightly. I rarely get right on with my tuner because of this. Any suggestions? Is it just time to take it back to the luthier? Lut
Yeah, I took my violin to the luthier. I have wimpy wrists. He said they were fine, he did loosen them slightly for me. Oh, and he explained the tuning issue I was having - the bow adds weight to the strings and the weight changes the tuning. So simple, but I would never have figured it out for myself.
Hello Sir,,, I have a violin peg shaper (from Wish),but when I turn the peg right he will al little broken....what do i do wrong kind regards from the Netherlands
Hi olaf.. Hope you well. Please help me why my violin on g string low, when i played it its going change the tone /picth. Its going flat what is going on it?
So I got an old violin from my great grand mother and its a Médio-Fino violin, the pegs face downward and I was wondering if you could tell me about them
Hi, this video was super helpful! I was able to get three pegs to stop slipping. However, the E string isn’t long enough to wind up against the peg box, so no added friction. Do you have any temporary fixes until I can go to a luthier?
@@nilexx2379 My friend's mother teaches violin. She recommended chalk on the peg--worked a dream! With COVID still being a big issue, I'm happy enough with this solution for now.

A dried out anything is thirsty. Put pegs in a bowl. Poor hot water over them. Wait 3 minutes or they will over swell. Put them back in the holes wet. End of problem.
Oh. I thought I would apply little rosin. I just bought German arpeggione. Was it a big thing, arpeggione, in Germany? In 50's. It's totally addictive. Meanwhile I am still waiting for my viola/lira certificate. She is still with experts rather than with me. She passed the dendro though, I haven't seen the papers yet.
Oh my god I think this is the issue. Just today I was checking up on my violin to make sure it was tuned and it wasn't! I reset the pegs and fine tuners and every time I tuned the other strings came loose for no reason!
I have an opposite problem on the pegs, I got an older violin and it's pegs keep getting stuck and it's making it difficult to tune because I have to use brute force to make it move either way.. Please do you know how to fix this or what might be causing the issue in the first place?
Hi Minz, It is either that you need to apply peg-paste, or your peg needs refitting. Sometimes the weather can expand the peg and make it stick as well.
i recently found an old violin lying around in my house and decided to get some strings to put on it. However, after getting some of the strings on, the pegs began slipping persistently and i couldnt find a solution online. I tried chalk powder, rewinding, etc and nothing helped. Very helpful. After unusually hot weather here in the UK my pegs were not holding the tune. Your help resolved this. Thanks
Thanks!!! Nice to hear from a proper luthier. This is a big help.

can you make a video of "How to replace the pegs on the violin"?
What if the opposite is the case. So you can't really properly turn them slowly but they always jump?
I got to 2:14 and then decided to do all strings at once, if only I had watched the bit afterwards 🤦♂️
Thank you!!

Olaf what do I do for tight pegs ? It doesn't move smoothly and it make creaking sound and gets stuck at certain notes.
Thank you so much!!!
Ah, I see. You wind the string so that it pushes the peg into the peg box providing extra friction? Is that it? Genius. Cheers.

This video taught me nothing. At all. You basically pointed the camera at the tubing pegs and told me to turn them. No shyt man. The pegs don’t hold.
Its because people use steel strings on violins with wooden pegs
