@@cristian-flaviusradu2090 oh no!! 🥺 In order to prevent breaking a string, I suggest playing the pitch on something while you tune. This way, you won't go above your intended pitch. Yes, it is appalling how may players AND shops are unaware of how to properly string violins. I think the biggest issue is that a lot of luthiers do not play the violins they repair. They string them up and have no idea the frustration that soon occurs for the players when they play their violin for a little bit. Glad I could help!

Hats off to KENNEDY VIOLINS in Vancouver WA. Thanks so much for teaching me about winding the string up to the pegbox to counter a slipping peg. I watched all the stuff on youtube from the eggsperts. Just started playing my viola again after a 13-year-long break and just trying to restring and tune it almost made me give up. Your video has helped tremendously! After following your advice, I was able to tune it on the second try, no slipping pegs. Thank you so much!
Glad to help! If your viola has been sitting for a while and your strings were really out of tune, then you'll want to look at your bridge. More than likely it was pulled forward (towards the fingerboard) when you tightened your strings, so you'll want to straighten it so it does not warp. Good luck!

This is.... genius. I need to go try it. I'd been having such an impossible time with my violin once I moved to a really dry place. It became completely unplayable, so... I gave up. The music store people kept just telling me "just use rosin on it" and brushed me off without any instruction on doing that. And like maybe that might have helped, but this also makes sense, and doesn't involve me disassembling my violin. Now I'm extra grumpy about how they treated me knowing this was possible and they just neglected to say anything and ignored me. I haven't played in almost a decade because of that experience.
@@KennedyViolins yes thank you! It worked like a charm for the first 3 strings. The only stubborn one is the e string, which was the worst offender in the past too. I will probably have to try the rosin on it too and combine with the winding technique to see if that does the trick finally. Here's hoping!
@yayrayday Yes, the E string is always the most difficult. You just have to make sure that you wind it as much as possible against the scroll box wall and push in a little harder. It should work just fine. It's just that the E string is thinner, so it's a little more difficult to create the "wedge effect" against the side of the scroll box.
Yes, it's definitely a learned skill and the more you do it, the better you get at it. Just remember to do everything gradually. If your violin is REALLY out of tune, you'll have to go back and forth between the pegs and the bridge for a while until you get where you want to go. You won't be able to do both in one fell swoop.
Thanks for this!! I kind of did this informally with my violin and students’ violins because once you get the string in the peg’s hole, I like it to be tightly and evenly wound. And I’ve also seen people wind strings unevenly and overlapping, and then when it’s time to change them, it’s wrapped and tangled and seems overwhelming to have to unwind and change strings without pliers. But I never knew that pushing the peg in was going to over time change the shape of the pegbox’s holes🙉 thanks so much! I’m gonna be more careful with this from now on.

This trick is awesome. I recently bought a new violin, and every string needed this. The E5 string took me 6 tries to get it not to slip, but that's probably a mix between me not doing something right and it being a new string. Thanks for making this video!
I just started to learn violin and i faced this issue, very upset and didnt even touch the instrument for the last two days, i felt like u r a god made that video just for me. Awesome fix. Thank you so much. I'll start playing again peacefully
Excellent video. Been playing violin on and off for many years and never had anyone explain this solution so clearly and logically. Thanks! Just got an electric violin and the slipping pegs were driving me batty. One quick question: I seem to remember seeing some old tuning pegs with a small screw set in the handle that allowed the peg to expand some. Have you ever seen these type pegs?😎👍🎻
Yes, I've seen those pegs and I think they gained popularity mostly in the 70's. I haven't used them much but some reason they didn't seem to catch on.
If this is a problem that has plagued violinists for hundreds of years why hasn’t anyone developed a better design? Why is the classical music world so obsessed with keeping things exactly as they were 300 years ago?
Our luthiers use this technique when winding the strings during the setup of all our instruments! Due to humidity/temperature changes, our instruments often experience some slipping upon arrival to the customer, but following this video to rewind the pegs should take care of it!
THANK YOU SO MUUCH!! I haven't picked up my Stradivarius since 2019 and this was soooo helpful!! I did all the pegs. I was so anxious but it's perfect now!!!
Awesome! I just bought a Viola for my wife for Christmas and I had to bring her along to make sure it was short enough for her to play it before I bought it for her. We were in the music store and one of the pegs kept jumping out of tune. The salesman gave her some "Peg Drops" to help keep it from slipping and that seems to have worked. She got it tuned up and it stayed in tune. This looks like a better solution than putting something liquid on the Viola.
Omg I'm glad I found this video I am horrible at tuning my violin mainly because I'm nervous of breaking the string. Because I have indeed broken a string while playing. 😅

This is a better solution than applying chalk to the pegs. Thanks for the video!
Thank you! I think this might be why we paid $80 for a like brand new Cremona SV-130
Your suggestion worked!😊😊😊
Glad it worked. Happy practicing!
bless u i just started learning the violin and was about to start biting it ragefully
LOL!! glad to help.
Thank you I was about to give up but I found you! You are a violin saver
I love to save violins! My cape is hidden behind me.... 👍🤪
We tried your tip and it worked, thank you!
Glad to help!
This trick is awesome. I recently bought a new violin, and every string needed this. The E5 string took me 6 tries to get it not to slip, but that's probably a mix between me not doing something right and it being a new string. Thanks for making this video!
Glad to help and thanks for the comment! 👍
I just started to learn violin and i faced this issue, very upset and didnt even touch the instrument for the last two days, i felt like u r a god made that video just for me. Awesome fix. Thank you so much. I'll start playing again peacefully
Well, that's got to be the best comment of the day!! Thanks for letting me know. 😀
Cool it really helped me on the peg and thanked I wish you a happy day!!!
Glad I could help! Happy practicing. :)
As a person that tunes uke, piano, guitar and bass I’m wondering this exact same question
This worked to tighten the peg on my daughters violin, thank you for making this video!
Glad to help!
When I buy my violin from you guys will the violin strings have already been adjusted so the pegs won't slip just like in The video?
Our luthiers use this technique when winding the strings during the setup of all our instruments! Due to humidity/temperature changes, our instruments often experience some slipping upon arrival to the customer, but following this video to rewind the pegs should take care of it!
THANK YOU SO MUUCH!! I haven't picked up my Stradivarius since 2019 and this was soooo helpful!! I did all the pegs. I was so anxious but it's perfect now!!!
lol no way u have a strad those are millions of dollars
I am very scared to do this in fear my hands will break the whole string 💀
I did it and 2 of my strings broke.. so I’m going back to the music store to have it fix
Esp E string
Same, I was terrified, but it worked lol
Thank you! You just saved my violin. I had this problem with mine and I was ready to find a big tree and do something bad. Thanks.
LOL. Glad I was able to save big trees from doing "bad things"...
OMG.... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! THIS IS A LIFE SAVER!!! IT SRSLY HELPED!!!
Super cool. Glad I could help! Happy practicing :)
Yes, it's a better long-term solution that is "free" and will not harm your instrument in the long term.
This isn't working for me 😭
Omg I'm glad I found this video I am horrible at tuning my violin mainly because I'm nervous of breaking the string. Because I have indeed broken a string while playing. 😅
Glad the vid helped out!
Thanks for this video!!! You saved me time and trouble! Truly appreciated!
This is amazing knowlege thank you so much :)
Much love from norway ❤️
Glad to help!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Didn’t want to put peg drops on my brand new cello! Love you!
Glad I could help!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! All of my pegs kept slipping mostly E and A and these prevented me fr9m playing because I was scared to break them. This really helped me engage back to practising violin! Thank you , may god bless you ❤
Cool. Glad to help!
What if it’s a string in the middle
No idea if I should have but I used a pair of tweezers to push the string to the side of the pegbox, kept it nice and tight to the sides.
Extreamly helpful......
I have no word........
And I don't even know....how can I thank you
You just did!
Broke my string because the peg kept slipping 🤠 and I need this string in a few days time 🤠
Oh no no nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Tysm for this my dude, I first took my violin to a shop to fix it but still kept slipping even after the fact, it was so annoying since a spent a bit and a half there, wish I couldve seen this sooner but better late than never! My violin works and sounds like it did when I first got it :D
Sweet. Glad to help!
Thanks so much, that worked great!
I have an electric violin I've been trying to learn, but gave up quick because the pegs kept slipping. I thought I got ripped off on my purchase, even though it had good reviews. I almost gave up, but just watched you video and it works perfectly. Thank you! Now to figure out where all the notes are....
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just found this video!! for 30 mins. trying to tune my violin this morning and the pegs were slipping driving me nuts late for work and fingers hurting trying to get it tuned. Just found this video!!! I will try this method. Thanks for the info.
