Im honestly confused by the trade because they gave up some playmaking for more shot creation which they already had an abundance of. Not to mention Beal's contract is bigger so it isnt like a cap saving move. I definitely want to see things play out before having a definitive opinion, but I'm not liking the trade for Phoenix. CP3 has dealt with (untimely) injuries so I guess getting someone whos healthier is a positive in all this. Regardless though, it feels like a sidestep rather than a step forward.

So here's the biggest thing thing about Beal. I've been watching him since high school. Including at florida. He came into the league as a shooter and defender with a great handle and vision who had prototypical size. Being in Washington this long with an ASS supporting squad has changed what he's had to focus on and the amount of work he has to do for them to be okay. So he's absolutely more comfortable doing everything else besides scoring. And being a knock down shooter.

Absolutely, 100 percent agree. They still can’t defend. Nuggets and a couple other teams(who will be healthier next season more than likely) are gonna score 125 a night on them. In a league that’s shown every season that the winners have solid wing defenders and balance in your starting 5, they chose to zag and just overload on small, poor defending volume shooters. Booker is definitely a better defender than he used to be but he’s still not that great. How does this team stop the Nuggets? Shouldn’t teams be maneuvering to beat them?

I have two questions for the Suns right now:
      1) Who is going to play point guard and run their offense? Because right now they have absolutely no one who can set anyone else up to score. This means that there will be more isolation basketball, and we all saw that that doesn't work when you play a real team that plays together and can move as a unit on offense and defense (like my Nuggets). Sure, they have three guys that can easily go off for 40 every night, but how do you put that together? Who do you have that can balance that out and keep everyone happy. They have nobody to quarterback this team (and say what you will about CP3 but he can still do that at a high level) and that's going to cost them.
      2) How are you going to even come close to having a competent defense? I like Devon Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal's game. None of those guys have ever been what I would even call a two way play, much less a defensive stopper. Also they're either going to have to play Beal or Booker at point, or go small basically every time they start. Again, you deal with teams that have real size (Nuggets, Wolves, Clippers) and you immediately find yourself with matchup problems on defense. On top of that their new head coach is Frank Vogel, how do those guys integrate into the type of system Frank wants to run? They only guy on this roster I could see maybe getting better under Frank's tutelage is Deandre Ayton, and that's a maybe.
On top of all of that, what are they going to be able to pay the rest of their team? Loose change and copper bracelets from the local tourist shops? Because Booker, Beal and Durant all command top dollar.
What the Suns needed to figure out was how to do was add more depth cheaply, not add another star (who's very similar to one they already have). This is a move in the opposite direction from what they needed as a team.

  • @francisong5476
    @francisong5476 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think they will all compliment each other simply because of their gravities and the spacing will be really good. Like you said the Nuggets are kinda 7-8 deep. I think they definitely need to trade Ayton not because he sucks but because thats the only way they can acquire depth. Lets say they turn Ayton into Valunciunas and Herb Jones or Capela and Bogdanovic or Steven Adams or any good key pieces that they can get via a 2-4 team trade then it could work. Also I think theyre gonna trade Payne too cause theyre overloaded on guards and they just got Goodwin too. So if they can get 2-3 really good rotational players thru an Ayton trade, another 1 for payne then sign min vets for okay hustle players then that 7-8 deep formula the Nuggets have can still work out for the Suns.
And just found out they got Isaiah Todd in the deal too. Not a huge name or not even impactful but he is a young prospect and who knows what him and Goodwin can develop into or if they can be packaged as well

  • @kingoffedoras9932

    3 things come to mind
    1. I think if you can trade Ayton to a team like Dallas, for like Christian Wood, Hardaway and Mcgee, that gives you much needed depth, and if you can bring back Terrance Ross, Torrey Craig and Josh Okogie as well that's an ok group of wings
    2. Devin Booker has shown enough potential as a PG that he can make it work, we saw in the playoffs after Paul went down he stepped up into that role, and I think with this much talent around him, and also Beal and KD aren't completley incapable of making plays they'll be OK there
    3. As a Clippers fan, if Chris Paul finds his way back to this team, I'm gonna feel some type of way. I want Russ back, but I fully understand if he's not willing to take the max we can offer him which is 4 million, and instead goes to a team like Minnesota, or Chicago or MIAMI, cause I don't think they're gonna get Dame, unless they are offering up Bam.

On your first point, I don't get why Dallas would agree to the trade if it's one-sided. The Mavs will gut their 2nd unit and will get a questionable "big" while the suns will get a serviceable bench. Mind you these two teams are competing with each other and are in the same conference. If I was Dallas, I would be looking to sign and trade Kyrie, not the bench.

Adding a 2 level scorer who generates pretty decent rim pressure who's a good playmaker for a player who was gonna get cut anyways, a terrible role player, & a few 2nds isn't a bad trade at all man.
The suns got a 2-3 level scorer who's a good playmaker & a good POA defender on a cheap contract. People are saying " what about depth" when they most likely trade Ayton for depth & if they cut cp3 what kind of " depth "would they realistically be able to get? Like I'm all for depth & defense over star power but let's be honest who could the suns have gotten to rebuild an entire rotation?
They upgraded the Cp3 AND landry spots now they can look to trade Ayton for some glue guys ideally

It’s not the trade but the money they take in from Beal. They will not be able to get rid of Beal for 4 years. And he’s gonna eat up like 50 mil a year. It’s not that the trade doesn’t look good. It’s that his presence kills that teams chances to get better or get any depth. They’ll have a fine regular season and get blown out in the first round regardless of their seeding. And that’s not even talking about his fit on the court. Overlapping KD and Books work space to shoot lower percentage from 2 and 3. So you’ll lose looks for two great scorers to give a mediocre one more looks? This is like every team that stuck Westbrook on their roster. It’s just not gonna win you important games. Also Beal is a below average defender. He SUCKS on defense. I liked to suns potential after unloading Paul. Now they’re just gonna be the post bubble lakers and eventually the nets last season.

Confession - I don't follow the Suns that closely -- Raptors fan here. But this gentleman nailed it. Excellent synopsis about why this is such a bad deal for Phoenix. The "Big Three" era of constructing super teams is over, but sadly there are front office staffers who haven't realized that and want the sugar high of instant gratification. You now have no bench whatsoever, and all that's required to turn this plan into a disaster for the Suns is an injury which, given the history of these three is more probable than not. There's a reason why players such as Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are so highly valued and were constantly mentioned in trade rumors. 2 way wing defenders who can guard multiple positions are hard to come by. They don't need to score 22 ppg, but they do all of the small things that in total add up to a complete TEAM. Catch and shoot 3 pointers. Hard screens. Tough defenders of the opposition's best players. These are roles that are as valuable as KD and Booker. So who is your shut down defender? Your boardman? This team will not beat Denver if you can't guard and stop people. Oh well...good luck Suns fans.

This is actually a good trade… they were already over the cap even if they didn’t have CP3’s contract so they would have been very limited on adding depth this offseason and even next offseason for that matter. They got a very good player for CP3, Shamet and 2nd round picks/pick swaps.
Now the Durant trade is something that they are already regretting… they gave away 2 good young players… one being very good (Mikal) and on a very team friendly contract. Also the 4 first round picks for an aging player that is still good but is about to turn 35 years old and is injury prone. They basically gutted their core and mortgaged their future just to get knocked out of the 2nd round.
They were a more complete team before the KD trade and would have had way more flexibility to improve their team and address their weaknesses.

At most they open up a mid level exception which gets you at most maybe like a Gabe Vincent. Like you pointed out they still have the opportunity to trade DeAndre Ayton to help build out their depth. No matter what happened their depth was already gonna be shot. At least now when they double one of the players or the others they can have either Beal or one of Booker or Durant in opposite corners where the ball will get swims too. Cam Payne has shown to be a solid guard in the playoffs, they still keep Ayton, the free agency market should be good for them, assuming other players want to join this team for cheap. The next few months are going to be crucial, with the new rookies soon to be taking roster spots, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the suns round out this team to a satisfactory level.
Frank Vogel is going to be a great fit here, he'll help hide their weaknesses on the defensive end. With KD getting older, this was a great move by the suns, they needed to do something big to contend with the current Nuggets roster.

I think a Suns to Bulls trade works. They can grab Caruso, DJJ, and maybe another role player who can help the Suns.

The suns needed russ if u really think about it a top 10 playmaker last season, great for rebounding, adds defense at least in comparison to Beal! If he performs how he did in the playoffs that could have been a good fit on the suns for Russ

The money sucks, but player wise, they got a 29 yr old All Star caliber player for the corpse of a 38 yr old CP3, and a guy with negative value in Landry Shamet.I'm going to let the offseason play out before I make any judgements about the Suns.Guess i'm in the extreme minority.I think Beal is a huge upgrade over CP3.He's been totally washed since the Dallas series in 2022.His slow down, half court, dribble dribble style is outdated.I actually felt like he bogged down the Suns offense at times.

Man, paying 50 million a year to a guy who will probably average 20ppg on the suns is crazy. And he got a no trade clause so have fun for the next 5 years

Well they brought in a defensive mastermind in Frank Vogel so that will definitely help the Suns defense.
But depth will be a problem for this Suns team with the entire salary cap being anchored down by 4 guys

I'm pretty sure the 2nd apron provisions in the new CBA procedures Phoenix from signing in season buyout guys in addition to no mid-level exception.
While I agree that Beal is not a fit with this roster I don't know that they had the flexibility to add guys in free agency. I might have that wrong but my understanding of their situation was that they didn't have the means to improve by adding crucial role players. In that context I don't completely hate the deal. They were going to jettison CP3 anyhow and they didn't really give up much draft capital. It's possible to make the case that adding Beal was the best case scenario in terms of extracting value from CPs expiring deal. To be clear I don't think Phoenix's title odds improved all that much. While this trade may not do what Phoenix hopes it does it's not an unmitigated disaster the way the Gobert trade was the second it happened.

The Suns really just pulled a Nets a few years after that disaster, but we also should remember the team Beal was coming from. As a Wizards fan, we did not have a good roster around him, and I'm excited to see what he does when hes not the primary defensive target. But I don't think that involves a championship
