A lot of old electrical and electronic items used to be thrown into landfill, before the WEEE regulations came along. Which is a shame as there is probably a lot of (back then) fully working equipment that will take centuries to rot down, if they will ever rot down into something else at all!
But first, before you recycle your electricals, see if you can give them a new lease of life by selling them on, or salvaging usable components from them, that way they won't have to be broken down unless they really are broken (and cannot be reused in any way). Even donating them (if they are still working) can give someone else the chance to use the item whilst it is still functional.
