@@Scapularbore Its been answered. Herkimer diamonds are always found in ~500 million yr old rock formations usually near Herkimer county. Whatever geological processes happened back then, produces these types of quartz crystals. This has been established through various dating methods.

@@rod1499 In retrospect it's kinda funny. Lithium is what they use to make rechargable batteries. Dilithium would be something which had two lithium atoms in it. Two lithium crystals on their own could not be pushed together to form a single molecule, but with the use of one or two other simple molecules you could get a reaction which would yield a molecule which could accurately be called "dilithium". It wouldn't be powerful enough to power a starship, but depending on what you combined, it might be usable to power something. Star Trek coming true in a small way? It would be like dihydrogen oxide, which is a fairly common molecule, also known as water.

Here in central Montana, we have Dobe Diamonds(smokey quartz), or also known as the Montana Diamond. The one and only place in the world you can find them is in the Judith Mountains(Lewistown, MT). They are double terminated smokey quartz and you can walk around, and find them literally sitting on the topsoil...perfectly cut. It's pretty special and one of the things my town is famous for. Here in Nebraska were I live, if you look around a bit you can find entire fields full of loamy clay loess. It's not worth anything, but it will grow a crop way better than diamonds, quarts, gold, or any of that fancy hard stuff. If you start a successful business in a city or town near farms, you can fleece farmers for all they're worth, and by not working very hard at all, you can get really rich. You don't have to worry about the farmers getting angry with you because they always blame the government or the weather for their hardships. It's pretty slick. I made enough to retire at age 36, and I'm not coming anywhere near running out of money now that I'm in my 70's. Most of those farmers will be working when they drop dead. It's what they get for being suckers and always voting Republican. As long as they never figure that out, my kids and grandkids will be rich rich rich just like I am! Trump 2024! A fool's born every minute, and that's my story.

@@S.Parrow While a big sheet of it is really cool, it's not as rare and amazing as a double terminating one. To my knowledge, there has not been a double terminating one found in Arkansas. I found one double terminating one in Colorado not far from Pitkin, and apparently a lot of quartz is found there since there is a creek there named Quartz Creek, but most of t he quartz I found there was broken or single terminated. It's surprising that I found any at all there since it used to get mined pretty heavily by the Indians, who were going after it for making arrowheads. I've never found an arrowhead in that area, but I sure have found a lot of flakes, indicating that they were finding lots of quartz there, and were working it on the spot, or at least dressing it to get rid of the bad parts so that they could work it into a tool later. The workmanship of those Indians never ceases to amaze me. Even during the periods when they weren't putting their all into it, they did some pretty amazing things with stone. You just have to respect that kind of knowledge and workmanship whenever it occurs and wherever you see it. The same with the pots and baskets they made. Herkimer Diamonds are double terminated quartz crystals with natural facets and a high clarity. They are only found in the Herkimer county of New York and surrounding areas. They form in little pockets in the dolostone rock called vugs, and there are multiple places where that rock is exposed and broken up, either naturally or left behind from previous miners or machine digs, so people can hunt for them at public mines. Decayed dirt pockets naturally occur throughout the dolostone and thats why the crystals come out muddy/dirty sometimes.

I lost it when I lost my last home during the move and kick myself for it.
I am sure someone now owns it proudly, somewhere and the only thing that gives me a little peace about losing it is the fact I found it in a skip myself a few years before.
I planned to have it fully analysed as I have not been able to find a picture anywhere of anything that even remotely resembles it 🤷
      Enjoy your piece 🙏

I found a really nice one that was small but all one piece facets on both ends with a small inclusion near one end. I found a few big ones but they were only partial crystals broken in the middle or embedded in another rock too small for me to get them apart. Not bad for a 12 year old! Cleavage planes are not so mysterious when looking at table salt, which breaks into tiny cubes. All crystals have preferred cleavage planes, and Herkimer Diamonds are a a specific quartz crystal known for its hexagonal shape and double termination. This specimen is far from the cleanest I've seen fall out of a rock. I've personally found jewelry grade Herkimer Diamonds trapped in the matrix, which almost make them museum grade quality.

found my first enhydro agatized coral fossil with druzy and botryoidal inclusions a few weeks ago. i cut it open and there it was. immediately spotted the bubble moving around and was already having a good look at the rock because it was already gorgeous even without the water pocket but that made for a truly special piece for sure

Used to love going there as a kid to mine herkimer diamonds, you could just walk around and pick up little small herkimer diamonds all over the place, great stuff!

A friend of mine grew up around Herkimer. These quartz points were so plentiful there, they were found along roadsides in the gravel used for road resurfacing. This was probably 1960s--70s time frame, when roads were resurfaced with tar, then a layer of gravel over.

It’s not polished. If you look closely you can see the characteristic texture that quartz have

Fun fact! Herkimer diamonds aren’t actually diamonds but double terminated quartz. How’s that fun? Because it ruins someone else’s fun!
