Adding the spice of bikes to the Gran Turismo recipe | A retrospective look at Tourist Trophy

  • Tourist Trophy is a legendary racing game on the PS2, and a formative one for many of us who grew up through the 2000s. Often referred to as 'the Gran Turismo of bike games', a term which is even more accurate than you might initially expect, TT is a superb example of what Polyphony is capable of when they take the core elements of what already makes the GT series so great, and simply drop motorcycles into the formula instead.
To this day nearing two decades later, Tourist Trophy is still arguably the pinnacle of what a motorbike racing game can be, with over 130 bikes and surpassing 30 circuit layouts, the majority of which were directly ported over from Gran Turismo 4. It is also a showcase of what Polyphony Digital and Kaz are capable of when they don't aim too far into the 'next' and instead focus on making the 'now' as fun and engaging of an all round experience as it can be, instead of tripping over their own feet trying to innovate in unnecessary ways...
So let's take a walk down memory lane for a retrospective look and review of Tourist Trophy on the PlayStation 2!

Tourist Trophy is still to this day my all-time favorite game on the PS2. And I totally agree that its sequel shouldn't be held back just because Kaz wants to tie it to specific hardware. I'm not exactly a VR fan but I also agree that it will work well for what Tourist Trophy 2 needs instead of a stupidly expensive dedicated racing rig. Have a good one, Mike!

I've recently gotten into Tourist Trophy last year and have been playing it on the emulator nonstop ever since. Probably one of the best motorcycle racing I've played so far. Hopefully Tourist Trophy 2 happens in the future.

Man me and my homy played this SO MUCH. THOUSANDS of hours. I always wished they made another.
A bit off topic I always wished someone would make a game geared to street bike riders. Where u could race in streets and add mods like nitrous kits, turbos, drag tails, fat tire kits, extended swingarms, air shifter and ride kits, among all the standard customization of paint and wheels and performance parts. No one has done this yet. Hope all is well bro. Great content as always 💯

I’ve been watching gameplay of this gem again lately and would love a sequel. Or even a bike or two added to the main GT7.

This game looks phenomenal running on a PS3 with backwards compatibilty. The HDMI output makes it look very close to Gran Turismo 5 visual quality. It's amazing. Same would apply to any multiplying of resolution that can be done with PS2 emulators.

They ought to slap a new coat of paint on it and call it a day - This game was near damn perfect for its time, and it still holds up.

I spent many hours playing this game 😂. I would buy a remake for sure. It’s a bike game so that means “D-pad”. No biggie. I especially liked how you could shift your weight around on the bike to effect acceleration or braking. Great game polyphony what are ya doin 🤷🏻‍♂️. Roll it out. 👍🏼

I loved Tourist Trophy, it basically got me into bikes after being very much a car boy.
But interesting that you mention Ride. I'm not sure I would rush out to buy TT2. I have Ride 3 and it has everything I want in a bike game (barring long loading times!), except the Isle of Man TT track which Tourist Trophy wouldn't be able to have either.

I've still got tourist trophy. I bought it new, when it came out in 2006. I am a massive bike fan. And would love to see a sequel to the original game. Perhaps even with real road racing courses included. Such as the Southern 100, Armoy and the North West 200. Maybe even the TT course too. If they can get the licence to put it in the new game. And of course have a massive selection of bikes both old and new in it as well.

Its really unfortunate that Kaz is holding back a TT2 despite the GT7 engine being ready for it, purely because he's not satisfied with current 'wheel' equivalents for bike games

I'm thrilled to provide a lot of footage for this retrospective as it truly deserves it. Even as someone who's not into bike games, Tourist Trophy still provided lots of enjoyment as it carries many of the things that makes Gran Turismo so great.
My hot take regarding Tourist Trophy though is while the menu aesthetics and physics do indeed read Gran Turismo 4 all round, the core gameplay feels more Gran Turismo 1 to me. In the best possible way I might add. Under 150 vehicles, very few non japanese vehicles, not a lot of license tests but still ones that feel very unique like the reaction time one, around 20-25 events to drive in, and even the majority of race cars being only obtainable by winning. The length of the game being shorter than most Gran Turismo games is what ultimately gives me GT1 vibes, and I play all of the games every year from time to time so I have experience in all of them.
Anyways, I still got 1 more PS2 game to record footage of, and I bet it's going to be very well liked.

Funny thing about the hardware is the most popular bike games and sims are mostly ridden with a controller, and the best ones have support for various controllers and VR.
Kaz completely ignores that. And for bike game lovers the main thing usually is the handling and physics, which I would believe Polyphony can pull off better than Milestone ever did

Or just get a steam deck/rog ally perhaps? I believe it costs as much as a proper gaming phone, and packs more horsepower for emulation purpose

While I would like to see Bikes be made an expansion of the GT series as with many other types of underrepresented demographics of motoring that GT neglects, I would certainly welcome a TT2. I said it before on the interview vid but Kaz is aiming a little too pie in the sky. You cannnot convince me that without a successful TT2 launch, anyone will want to develop said rig he dreams of. Let alone the amount of people who will not have space for the rig he wants as well. He would be targeting a niche of a niche of a niche, and the potential market shrinks just that far with it. At least if they release the game in the first place they stand a chance to establish that hunger to any investors.

Sim rigs for bikes already exist but they're stupidly expensive as you can imagine. Devotion Sim is mainly focused on MotoGP and while they have to offer is top notch quality, their prices are out of reach for the majority of us mortals out there.

I remember this game, but never liked bikes & never got interested with it (because I had GT4). Anyway - discovered fun of bike games in recent years with RIDE/MOTO GP series from Milestone. They are really interesting games, easpecially PS5 installments with nice high-res & 60fps. Maybe you should give it a shot at making vids about them?
PS: sweet Yezuus, why, why, WHY THEY TOOK AWAY THE SEATTLE TRACK FROM GT SERIES. The more I remember the racing perfection GT4 was the more mad I am at the new installments :(

The only thing I didn’t like about Tourist Trophy was the lack of depth compared to GT, I really wish they would bring it back with more bikes, off road racing, and proper endurance racing. It had the potential but felt like a rushed product at the end.

    • @jessaphillips2846

I don’t know why a bike sim rig would be so difficult to design, simply use springs for centering the seat, a simple aluminum frame and a padded seat. The problem is that all bikes don’t have the same rider triangle unlike a car. All cars generally have a steering wheel over your lap with your feet out in front controlling the pedals. With bikes you have to consider sport bikes with tucked up feet, neutral and forward pegs for standard and cruiser bikes, the standing position for a motard/ dirt bike and the upright seating position for a scooter. It’s not really feasible to make one rig that can accommodate all of these without it becoming very pricey.

It took until Ride 4 that I found a bike game that was as satisfying to play as this one. I've began playing through it on my phone with the AetherSX2 emu, and I'm enjoying unlocking bikes again. I really like the pick up and play nature of this title, as it makes gameplay feel more punchy.
However, there was a rival to Tourist Trophy and it had an even better selection of bikes, IMO. It was Riding Spirits II by Capcom, launching about 2/2.5 years before TT. It just wasn't as satisfying to play, which isn't unusual with a Capcom vehicle based game (Auto Modelista being another).

Would make for fun lobby meets. One can only dream.. lol. I still say Gran Turismo could have done an open world game like the horizon to motorsport years ago and cashed in. I get that kaz is more of a traditionalist and probably wouldn't want it to steal thunder from the main game. I'm still a bit disappointed in Gran Turismo for what it doesn't have to be a track racing game. Like where tf are REAL rolling starts? That's why the PC gets most of my rig time these days.

No, bought it new and never found it unreasonable, if anything it was easier than most of the GT4 missions and licence tests of the time. Good video. A sequel would be nice but it'd be too service like now so pass. Ride/RIMs exist. ride reinvents itself in certain ways. Ride 4 is Forza Motorsport 2 regions that's awesome. Ride 2 had Forza Motorsport 6 cutscenes.
Used to own this game but rebought it for $1 2 years or more now. Qas wortth more in my mind but still glad to own it just need GT4 Prologue and GT 2002 Concept not interested in HD Concept.
Ride 1&2 are fine but 3&4 change but 4 is too hardcore and impossible for me to play, 5 could be as well. So 1-3 it is for me. 3 changed some things and I don't mind it. But won't deny Milestone still has that innovation in them.
Evolution GT, Alfa Romeo Racing Italiano RPG/rewind system as the first of their kind. The challenges in V8 Superstars, Gravel as a tv rally show game which to compete with Dirt/Dirt Rally was fair and people overlook it. Gravel deserves more respect. But only few people play Milestone games mostly bikes because of the SBK and MotoGP to Ride there is more going on there then their car games but still I appreciate both sides I've researched or own.
Kaz going different directions is fine but he over does it still. Whatever developers have and his approval.
I enjoy the credits removal, the challenge mode they can be tough and some track repeats aren't engaging but they are structured that way. The licenses.
I prefer games what others aren't doing and being unique but its bad unique or bad following. But some unique is eh. Some return to form but with a spin is good.
MotoGP or PGR4/Test Drive and MX dirt bikes for the time yes.
