Nice to see proper componants not the cheap nylon gears in all the main ebike motors.

Is it a small brushed DC motor with the red and black wires soldered? What is its purpose?

I don´t like that... I don´t know the purpose of the actuator but sooner o later the brushes will wear out. The cables are going out of the case, could be something to just power the exhibition model?

I think small DC motor for actuator shifting gear

That's for shifting I believe. Of course, "at some point" the brushes on that will wear out, but given that it's not doing any hard work comparatively speaking, it will last many many years before that will become a problem.
Pinion knows about this 100% and I'm sure they made the decision actively to go with a brushed motor instead of brushless.
