I picked up the 255 a week ago and love it. I’d been using an Apple watches for years and decided I wanted more data like sleep and HRV. But what I really wanted was the suggested works and training plans. Thanks for the review and great work.
Nice Mike! I am actually going to review the Apple Watch from a Swim/Bike/Run perspective. It's a good watch in a lot of ways, I just think garmin is a bit better for these particular tasks.
I just got a 255 after having an Apple Watch and I'm happy with it for the same reasons that you wrote. And not having to charge it everyday is AWESOME. I also appreciate the easy push button navigation while I'm running. It takes time to get used to the Garmin navigation but I can now zoom through it.
Well Matt I took the plunge!! I bought the slate grey 255 last week and it is amazing!! Love it. Great reviews and you made the decision process awesome and easy. Thank you! Great vid as always. 2 weeks out from 70.3 Ohio!
Really? that’s awesome! Now you’ll have to keep me posted on how you’re liking the 255! I think that’s the better way to go than something like the 945LTE at this point. Be sure to send me your race number so I can follow along on your race!!!
@@davidmcquade4743 I like it. I had the 735 in the ice blue colour and another in straight black. I do prefer the slate grey as the red accent that Matt talked about does look really good. It is a smart looking watch and is standing up well to the torture my lifestyle puts it through.
Personally I think maps a compelling reason to go for the 955. Then the other extra features are bonuses. On the other hand wish Garmin had made a 955s. Size options is one positive for the 255.
I have the larger 255 and small wrists and it is fine. I used to have the 735XT and this is slightly bigger but you don't notice it. Again, small wrists and I think it looks proportionate and fine.
Yea maps and some additional features is pretty good. So it really depends on what you use your watch for. For road running I would say 955 is overkill most of the time. For trail running, hiking, ultra, etc. 955 is definitely a steal at just about 150bucks more than 255 music.
Yeah, it's interesting that Garmin leaves some of these sports profiles off of 255. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great review! It's crazy how much of a jump the 255 is compared to the 245, and it basically makes the 745 obsolete immediately. If it had golf as an activity I would have got that, but went with the instinct 2 instead. I'm hoping the instinct brings in HRV (you can get it by doing a health snapshot manually) tracking with a later firmware update.
I might be wrong about this but I think that Garmin was planning on bringing the other 255 software updates to the Instinct 2 so you might be in luck 👌
I have a 735xt from 2017. Great watch & has all I need as an amateur triathlete. Looking for a change & the 255 looks like a good upgrade. Thanks for that comparison. Very well done. 👍🏽👍🏽
I just downgraded from 745 last week & never regret it.. Cos 255S is perfect size specially for sleep tracking.. I have boney wrist & wearing 745 in my sleep frequently woke me up.. I’m also so happy with the versatility of quick release on 255S.. I just realize there were many features that I didn’t use on 745 so I’m pretty much satisfied with 255S, except the idea of Tidal Blue color only comes in 46mm version 😆🫣
Yeah, that’s interesting, it’s really nice that this 255 comes in the smaller size option. I think it’s going to be such a good option for a lot of people. Keep me posted on how you like it. 👍
The 255 sounds like a low budget powerhouse! I get that the 955 has way more bells and whistles, but it really should; it's the flagship Forerunner watch. Frankly, I feel like the 255 is punching well above its weightclass, and is doing well. Great video, and excellent review, my friend!
@@mlegrand I'm doing alright. Trying to get a new, much better paying, job. Been in a creator's funk for far too long. About to snap out of it, though!
I believe Garmin gave the 955 the band pins that aren't quick release so you can use the pins with the quick connect straps that clip onto the pins. The pins are fatter than a normal 22mm pin which allows it to be used with the quick connect straps.
Matt, regards from Brazil. I've been searching for a first watch to buy and improve my running and I your videos are the best to help everyone to make their choice. And I wanna share that I'll go with the 255 non-music, I almost got the 265 but 255 has everything I need for now. Thank you very much to help me with the hardest choice ever buying a watch hahahaah Cheers man.
Awesome! Thank you for the kind words! I think you'll love the 255 non music. That's a great option with great battery life and tons of features. Enjoy it and best of luck with running!
I went with the 955 and love it on my small wrist. I love the touchscreen. I cut the original strap off and replaced it with my other Garmin quick fit bands. The last update worked out the bugs!
@@realme-em3xy - Maybe. The Fenix has three different sizes and different watch band widths. The 955 needs a 22mm width watch band. Other than that, the quick fit bands work on the 955. 👍
The 255 is awesome! The slate grey looks really nice. Tip: use an analog watchface, makes it look even better! And put pulse ox off, brightness down, hr readings on smart, phone messages off to get a very good battery life. Only just recommended me to do a long run after a 7k run yesterday 🤔 seems odd advice 😅 (I’m a beginner 7k was long for me and my legs hurt)
It takes a little time to learn your training load and adjust workout suggestions. You can turn those off if you’d like. I have mine off but very rarely use them. Great battery life suggestions 👌
Garmin recommended exercises and estimation of VO2max can be extremely off at times. I know I can barely run 10km in an hour, but my watch thinks I can run 10km in 40min and all its recommended workout pace is based off that fact for some reason. So I'm forced to switch the target metric to heart rate instead of pace. It really is just a guideline and shouldn't be followed religiously 🤷♂🤷♂
been using my apple watch s5 for my running activity almost 3 years now, but i recently pick up the slate grey 255 non-music version. was tempted to get the 955 but after long review, i don't really need the other features (garmin/strava live segments, golfing features, preloaded maps etc.) that is on the 955. been using it for weeks now, the 255 definitely worth it.
That's super interesting to hear. I'm working on an Apple Watch review and I'll probably mention a few other watches in comparison so this is great feedback. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thank you for the video 👍 im in the market for sports watch, after my old timex triathlon finally died🤭 i love the idea of lots of bells and whistles, but at 60yr and just a recreational exerciser, i don’t actually need all the functions. So for anyone making a decision on a sports watch, its probably a good idea to be mindful of what you want it for, what you want to get out of having one🙂
Thanks for the good feedback and advice Bill. I loved my old timex watches. I really want to review some of the newer Timex devices but I haven't had the opportunity to yet. We'll see.
I ordered a 255 after some deliberation. I think a lot of ppl might say 955 is a better deal because it offers quite a lot more (maps, touchscreen, longer battery, additional features, etc), for like a 100 more (Compared to music 255). It IS a steal for sure. 955 definitely wins in value for money department. But for someone like me, an average road running hobbyist who probably won't use most of those additional 955 features like ever, I really don't see the point of spending more. 🤷♂In fact, I think it's a blessing Garmin trickled so many high-end features down onto their "mid-range" model in 255. Stuff like better recommended workouts, 2-week battery, multiband GPS. All these really matters A LOT to users like me, far more so than touchscreen or maps. I'm just really glad we weren't forced to buy their high end 955 to get access to these features.
Yes! I am very impressed for what you get for $350 on the 255. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. Also, thanks for replying to other comments on here. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi Amanda! Thanks for checking out the channel. The 745 is an excellent watch. You might be able to find it on a discount but last I checked it wasn't too heavily discounted compared to something like a 945. The 255 would be an awesome watch to checkout. I think you'd really enjoy it. I'm constantly impressed with that watch. It comes in a few sizes and it's less expensive than the 745 (even after it's been discounted). Let me know what you end up with and how you like it. Thanks!
So after a ton of consideration i went with the 955 400 for 254 another 200 bucks i can get the solar i think its a no brainer. I think the 255 is good my wife had it for awhile but man if im spending 400 bucks whats another 2 and get the 955 with everything on it. Good review tho bud best one i seen so far
@@mlegrand will do matt! Running my first marathon in October so if I remember then ill let you know lol but so far with training its been pretty good no complaints.
Great review! I want the 955, but I really don't need it. The 255 actually does a lot more than I need, so I'll probably get that. I've been using Suuntos, but I've pretty much had it with them now.
Yeah, it’s a hard choice. But Suunto is a brand I haven’t tested yet on this channel. It’d be fun to check out. Keep me post on what you end up with and how you’re liking it. 👍
Matt: I’m a cyclist and don’t run at all, but I’d like to get a smartwatch to track all the other recovery metrics and walks, during my recovery days. If you were to buy your first smartwatch, which would you pick between the Coros Pace 3 and the Forerunner 255? I want a good quality watch but I also don’t want to pay for features I might never use. I’d love to hear your pick.
I'd probably scan around for deals. If you can find a decent deal on that FR 255, that'd be my pick. It's just such a great option. I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a back up for cycling as well. Do you use a Garmin cycling computer?
6.5" circumference of wrists, guess I have to try both form factors on. Cycling, road and gravel, although have a cycling computer, hiking, trail running as applications.
Yeah, I haven't reviewed the 9 Peak so I don't know but I'd guess you're right. The 955 is the watch I've been wearing the most recently. Keep me posted on how you like it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great vid 🤩 I’m contemplating a move to 255 from my Apple Watch, mostly for the suggested workouts. But I’m going nuts trying to decide on 255 vs 255s. Love a light watch and have small wrists, but the big display…
I’d vote going for the bigger screen also. It’ll take some getting used to but I prefer it. The 255 is very different than the Apple Watch. I always describe it as deciding between a very smart watch and a very sporty watch. Let me know what you think after you purchase something 👌
Little late to the party but here it goes. I actually tried both of them and was surprised that the 955 is actually quite a bit thicker, to the extent that I prefer the slightly thinner 255 on my wrist. Then there are symbols on the buttons of the 955 whilst the buttons on the 255 are clean, which I think looks better. I preferred the clean black look on the 955 over the colored accents on the 255 but alas, the perfect sports watch doesn’t exist they say. In regards to functions, the maps on the 955 are nice but too fidgety for me overall so I don’t miss those. I do miss the touchscreen, as even though I mostly use the buttons, it’s still a nice and smooth addition. I stuck to the 255 which can be had for around 289€ in Germany at the moment. One small addition that noone seems to mention besides in some forums somewhere: Both watches have pretty crappy music quality as in, it didn’t matter which headphones I used, it sounded like quite a low bitrate. I guess most people don’t seem to care but I just wanted to have mentioned it. It‘s not completely horrible but it‘s a very noticeable difference to higher quality sources.
This is great feedback for people to read. I typically don't listen to music from these watches when I run. I connect directly to a smart phone. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
That would be amazing. I have a feeling that the 200 series will get an AMOLED screen next but I have no idea. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Just earlier today I picked up a Forerunner 255 after comparing it to the 955. I felt the price savings was worth it compared to the extra features on the 955. Really wish it did have training readiness but at least all the metrics that calculate training readiness on the 955 are available on the 255
Yeah, it's odd that it was left out. Seems like if they have all the metrics than they could have just added the Training Readiness number to the morning report. I still think the 255 is a smart purchase. keep me posted on what you think of it as you use it a bit. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I’ve been battling between getting the 955 or 255. I’ve a 735xt but I really want an upgrade. The 255 great but the 955 is insane plus I really like the thickness of the case in my opinion it makes it look amazing!
There's been rumors that Garmin might update this device. I haven't heard anything official from Garmin so I'm free to speculate. When do you need a watch? If you can wait it might be worth seeing what Garmin updates on this watch series. Otherwise, sounds like you like the 955 might be the way to go. Let me know if you have questions. I'm happy to help!
@@gabrielfernandeztattoos - well, they posted that 965 really really quickly after the 955. I have a review of it here on this channel and I hope to post a 100 day review soon. I have no idea what Garmin will do next. I wonder if they'll start to cycle some watches with MIPs displays and some with AMOLED into the same product category. 🤷♂
Thank you! I had to slightly adjust the music to match the shots. I've reviewed the 945LTE in the past but I returned it to Garmin. The big difference is the LTE services. I can't think of any other watch from Garmin that's utilizing those services currently. I have no idea why it's not an option on other watches 🤔 The GPS accuracy is actually really good on the 945LTE and it's a nice size device. However, if it were me, I'd still probably pick one of these two watches over the 945LTE unless I really wanted to use the LTE features. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Picked up 255 music. For my trainings I don't need maps. And for the 1 procent of Time I will bring a phone with proper navigation. Also I like the looks better .the 955 has more bulky plastic. The music edition could have been with more storage over the regular... but it's enough. I put maximum Brightness all the time and it still lasts a week.
Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. My phone is fantastic for mapping if/when I need that sort of thing which is really rare. Keep me posted on how you're enjoying this one! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand I did was tempted to buy the venu 2 plus. But running as primary goal made me flip to the forerunner but. I'm still super curious to try that one
Great video! But I have a question: Now that the new generation is available I can get the 255 (music) for $299 and the 955 for $399. With only a $100 difference, would you still choose the 255? Or do you suggest going for the 265 (at the same price as the 955)?
It’s hard to say. I guess it would still depend on if you needed mapping or wanted the extra battery life. The screen is very very nice on the 265 and 965. But we’re all different when it comes to price sensitivity so I can’t really judge if it’s worth the extra hundred for you. Tricky call.
So true. Hot Keys are really cool. I only wish you could do more with them. The available functions seem ok but limited. Thanks so much for posting this Darius!
I'm tempted to buy 955 but there's so many issues surrounding the touchscreen and map. And these features are the reasons why I am leaning towards 955. So 255? 😂
My touch screen works well, but it doesn’t work great on the maps screen if that makes sense. The 255 would be an excellent option and is a great value. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hey Matt. Great video as always. I have recently “downgraded” from a Coros Vertix 2 to a FR 255 which, although is half the price, it has better GPS accuracy and much better HR accuracy. The only thing I’m missing is the amazing battery life of the Vertix 2. Also, it turns out I pretty much enjoy a lot more wearing a plastic watch for various reasons: more comfortable, better HR accuracy, better GPS signal reception as far as I know regarding plastic vs metal cases but that might be a myth. Just out of curiosity, how do you find the GPS/HR accuracy of the FR 255 compared to the 955? I’ve found the FR 255 to be excellent so far. Thanks and have a nice day 😊
Hi Clita, I am a huge fan of the 255. I've found the 255 and 955 to be extremely similar as far as HR and GPS accuracy goes. The battery life is a bit better on the 955 but nothing seems to go as long as the Vertix 2. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
So I’m coming from the instinct solar and I really just want an upgrade; the instinct 2 battery life seems really cool but I don’t want the same thing. I love the touch screen and all black 955 and with the solar. I only use basic workout features like strength, walks, runs, and bike. So I can’t decide between 255 or 955
Do you think you might use maps? Black 955 Solar would be a very nice option. 🔥 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi Matt, Great video, it helps to choose. So I'll go with the 955. Do you think that a screen protection is necessary ? I would use the watch for sports, of course, but also for everyday carry. So I'm a bit afraid of screen scratches.
My 955 has been fine without a screen protector but I did scratch my 945 and then put a screen protector on it and it actually made the screen face look a lot cleaner. I'd probably recommend one if you're worried about scratches. 👌
Fantastic video Matt - your concise breakdown helps mitigate any unanswered questions. I’m torn between both watches, I like the report capability on the 955 but could care less for the music. I’m going to enter my first marathon soon and a triathlon after that. Currently I just use my Gshock range master and Strava for runs. I wanted to purchase the Garmin pro plus heart rate monitor to pair with whichever watch I choose. Is that unnecessary? Your thoughts? Thanks again for your in-depth analysis.
Awesome Luke! You're going to have to tell me all about the marathon after you finish! GShock is a fine option. I think you could go either way on the 955 or 255 and I think you can save money by skipping the Garmin Pro Plus HRM. I did review it here: th-cam.com/video/u2Erl5-ubAc/w-d-xo.html There are cheaper options that are perfectly fine.
@@mlegrand Gratitude for your reply! I went with the 955 after all. Went this last Thursday and picked one up and I’m loving it, well worth it. Got it, thanks, I’ll check out your review! What’s your take on the polar HR monitor? I’ve heard mixed reviews.
@@lukedonn1226 - I think Polar makes great heart rate monitors. I'm always hesitant to recommend anything super expensive unless you're looking for those unique heart rate monitor features. If you just want an accurate HR strap you can find some for $30/$40 that do the basics really really well. Should be some videos about that sort of stuff on this channel if you dig around. Take care Luke!
@@lukedonn1226 Been using the Polar H9 HRM for over 5 months, it's superb and definitely worth buying if you want to focus on appropriate heart rate loads/intensity during your workouts and race days. For 50-60$ it's well worth it. Much more accurate and precise than the wrist HRM, but I use both in tandem.
watching this in July 2023, trying to make up my mind of which one of these 2 I should get. I'm not going for 965 or 265 as I don't believe a better screen resolution justifies the price.
@@mlegrand thanks for replying mate! I won't be wearing the watch in my sleep so I think that the extra features of the 955 will not be important in my case. As long as they have same-ish battery life and gps, 255 is the way to go for me.
Wow, both good prices. I'd go for the 955 to get the maps and the extra memory. If you never think you'll use music or maps, I'd save the money with the 255. 👌 Let me know what you end up with and what you think of it. Thanks Scott!
I have been using my Vivoactive HR for years. The only reason I have not upgraded is because of the bad ass battery life gps and hr quality. The fr255 is the watch that I believe I will buy. It's price vs value to me makes sense. I could care less about the music option. Is there any reason I should buy the fr255 music other than for music?
Nope, I'd skip the music. I almost never use it on the watches that have it as an option. Keep me posted on what you end up with and how you like it. Thanks Joshua!
3:33 that's how normal watch bands work...though admittedly they could have easily done what a lot of watch bands and watch manufacturers do is put a little slit in the back of the strap where a tiny tab comes out from the pin allowing you to use it to move it. i am deeply thankful that garmin chose to go the route of industry standard watch bands though...i own a bunch of them that are much better than anything that garmin could come up with.
Yeah, the 255 is a great option and for the most part has what you need. But it's interesting how much is missing when I really started to look at all of the little things. Keep me posted on what you end up with and how you like it. Thanks Alejandro!
I ordered the 255M with a nice discount :-) but have to wait a few weeks for it... I just sold my 245M, was very happy with it but missed the open water swimming and barometer. 255 solves that. I use a Karoo2 for bike rides: that has all the navigation, climbing , power and live segments options that I do not really need while running (or swimming :-) ) In the meantime I dusted off the FR35 and Swim.
I’ve been unbelievably impressed with the 255. Keep me posted on what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts after you’ve had it for a bit. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hey Matt, do you have a video planned for the new wrist based power that has come to FR 955? I just got the update pushed through today. Excited to try it! But curious if you were gonna do a review. Thanks
No plan to do a specific video about running power but I am planning on doing a 955 and 255 review after 100 days which should be coming soon. I have tested running power on the 955 and I don't see any problems with it. But we should really call it an estimation of running power. Nothing is measuring force directly and each company does it slightly differently so I don't see a way to determine accuracy. Still, it's a nice feature and I'm glad they added it!

I just want a watch that connects quickly to gps. I dont even need the most exact location, but my forerunner 45 takes so long to connect even after updating the cpe
The newer Garmins seem to connect a bit faster. I should start timing the load times but it’ll be different depending on previous GPS locks, tree coverage and 100s of other issues.
@@mlegrand I know, but I just cant understand why phones seem to have no problem to instantly find your location. And a device specially made for something struggles so much. But what do I know. Its just frustrating when you are warmed up and need to wait for several minutes bevor you run

I have the 255 and I have loved it, I have found exactly a one mile loop that I love to run! However, I stopped using it for a few weeks as I was using the Apple Watch Ultra. When I recharged the 255 and ran the one mile loop I noticed I was hitting the mile marker sooner than usual by about .1 mile or so. This has me thinking that it is inaccurate for some reason?
A good experiment would be to run the loop with both watches. One on each wrist. Make sure both watches connect to satellites before starting. It should be pretty accurate but maybe something’s going on? 🤷🏻♂️ Let me know what you figure out. 👍
@@mlegrandI actually did order the 955 the other day and received it yesterday. I wore both watches to test out on the one mile loop and the 255 and 955 hit the mile mark at the exact same time. My 255 had been inaccurate for a few weeks but I wear both and it’s recording the same distance accurately again. I’m still confused as to why my 255 was inaccurately recording distances
Personally I don’t care for music or maps. But training readiness is something I wish my 255 had as well as the real time stamina. Would it be wise if I returned my 255 for the 955 ?
Thanks for the info. I know i may be late to the party, but any thoughts on coros apex 2 vs these forerunners? I like the coros app and great battery life but don't like the crown.
I love Coros watches but I’ve been really impressed with what Garmin is doing lately. I’d probably lean towards a 255 over the Apex 2 or the 955 over the Apex 2 Pro.
In case using music the 255 it becomes 400$ , so for more GIGAbytes storage (32 vs 4) and additional stupid features, maybe the 955 become better choise
100% agree. I don't typically listen to music from my watch but the price gets closer when you're considering the 255M (music version) Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi @Matt LeGrand i bought 955 today afterall ! I just hope mine is not faulty/buggy. Seen lot of report that 955 had some software and touchscreen issues. Oh btw have you encounter any software/ touchscreen issue ? And thank you for the replies last time !
I haven't noticed any touchscreen issues. The one software bug that I noticed was the open water swimming accuracy but I think that's been fixed recently. I just haven't confirmed it because the water is freezing this time of year 🥶

Hi, I am planning to get my first sport watch and I am between Venu sq2 and FR255. My activities are mostly gym, running and swimming. What's your opinion on this price range?
Both of these would be great options. Depending on your swim workouts, you might want the more sport focused FR254. I’d also take a look at the styles and colors and see if there’s anything that you prefer. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Even after watching your video im still struggling with which one I should go for. I have an Apple Watch and really isn’t cutting it for me. I’m wanting sleep recovery, heart rate monitoring, running distance recording and swimming length calculating etc… what do you think I should go for ?
Not to make things worse but I'd also suggest looking at the 265. 255 non-music is a great option to save money. The biggest thing (you and I should both do) would be to sign up for a race next summer. Something that scares us just a little bit. Maybe a short triathlon? Something that we'll need to train for over this winter block. Keep me posted.
How do we feel with the 255 being on sale for 249 right now and the 955 for 399… i have picked up the 255 but I’m super conflicted and feel as if i want to bring it back for the 955 I’m not even sure how much I’ll actually use the map but these extra features are kind of making me lean that way… how is everyone else feeling do 955 users actually use there map?
There are a few other differences in addition to mapping but personally, I don't use the mapping all that much. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I guess it depends on how much you value battery life and the maps that are in the 955. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Nice video👍 do you think the 255 is suitable for Ironman distances (battery etc)? Definitely not that fit yet but don’t want to have to upgrade watches again.
I haven't tested the 255 for that distance but technically it should be fine. I've been super impressed with that watch so far and I think a lot of people are going to enjoy it. The 955 is a better watch so if you think you're going to spend extra money on the 255 music it might be worth just jumping up to the non-solar 955. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@davidwells7609 - I’ve been wearing the 955 the most recently and I’m enjoying the training readiness score and the morning report. You’ll have to let me know what you think when you’ve had yours for a bit.
I haven’t tested this but you should be able to design workouts and import them in and over to the watches. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thank you!! I'm a new runner, and I wanna get a forunner watch so I have been searching And I'm between 955 and 255! Even though I watched all ur video I still don't know what to get. What do u suggest to me ?
Hi Liliana, congrats on all of the running. I hope you take it slow and really enjoy every minute! It’s such a great activity. These are both great devices. There have been rumors that Garmin will updates these shortly so it might be worth waiting for that announcement. It’s just rumors at this point but it all depends on when you need a watch. But if you’re between these two, I would suggest the 955 if you want music and maps and the 255 non-music if you want to save a little money. I know some people prefer the buttons on the 955. I recently posted 6 month reviews on both of these watches but overall, I’ve been very happy both.
That's the one I've been wearing the most as well. But the 255 is an impressive deal. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
No tennis on the 255. Why? It’s not as if Garmin has created metrics specific for tennis. I don’t understand why they only offer that on the high end devices.
Did you ever find out if the open water swim has improved on the 955, or is the 255 still a better watch for specifically tracking open water swims and possibly pool swims?
I still haven't tested the software correction but my understanding is that they should be equally good for open water swimming. I wonder if anyone else has tested it? Ray from DCRainmaker seems like the only other one who might.
@@mlegrand Yeah, I was about to get the 955. But then the 965 rumors came out. I didn't want to wait any longer, but because of the test you did, I decided to go ahead and get the 255 music for now since it was on sale and get the 965 when it comes out.
@@spiritsavage - I've seen those rumors too. I haven't heard anything officially from Garmin yet but I'm very interested to see what's going to happen here in the next few months. 👍🏻
I haven't tested the Huawei GT3 Pro but I absolutely love the 255. I have lots and lots of watches and I'm wearing the 255 on my wrist right now. Highly recommend it. Either way, let me know what you end up with and how you like it. I love getting feedback about this stuff from people. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Awesome production as always, Matt! I can’t remember offhand you doing split screens - that intro was badass. I can barely stomach spending $350 on a fitness watch so mos def the 255. It looks like your AT recovery is going well?
Well, I don't know exactly what you need or what stuff you like to do. I'll say 955. The Pace 2 is getting pretty old these days. I wonder if Coros will make a Pace 3 at any point. 🤷♂️
Storage for Music. Bluetooth headphones are needed to listen to music. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I haven’t used it specifically for that. It doesn’t have mapping functionality so I’m guessing there are better options out there. But I really like this device. I think it’s a great value. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi Matt, You did a great job. Thank you for that. I've got a question. Do they give specific (default) or customized audio prompts? The old Endomono had such a feature that I miss now in the modern product. I could set my target run distance e.g. 10k, and it would give me the lap time, total time, and the estimated finish time at the end of each lap (1k). Does it work well? Does it make the music silent for that? Could you describe that a bit, please?
Hi Marian, If you have headphones connected to your phone or directly to the device it’ll speak your splits which is nice. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I’m also confused, I see the 255 come with yellow and red on the side. Play better has the garmin 255 music and its yellow instead of red on the side. Any reason why
Is that watchband width the same on both? Could you fit other sized bands from other Garmin watches like the Fenix 7 or the extra bands you can buy from Garmin? Thanks
Hi Matt! Thank you for your amazing work reviewing all these devices. I've started triathlon 10 years ago and I'm looking to upgrade from my Ambit3. I have a small baby, limited time to train, and trouble nights. Is the 255 enough with its body battery and suggested workout or is the training readiness really important? I do listen to my body, but I would like to take the most out of my training without a coach as my time is limited and always uncertain...
I would say, that it depends on your budget. I really like the 255. I think it’s an amazing value. I’d probably bump up to the 955 if you want maps or even if you want music on the device. The 255 has a music option but if your going to spend more on the 255M, you might as well bump up to the slightly better 955. The base 255 is such a great option and I think you’d be fine with it for all of your triathlon training. Let me know what you end up with and how you like it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Hi! I went for de 255s I've received it a week ago. I also wanted a smaller watch so I wen't with that one. It's extremely light and less less likely to destroy my sleeves! Thank you!
I’m trying to pick between these watches and I’m leaning towards the 955 mostly just for the navigation. But this video just made it harder because the main reason I’m switching to a running Garmin is for the gps and navigation and the 255 is only still pretty expensive might as well spend a little more and get the top of the line right. Yeah I’m getting the 955. And the spring pins on the strap are easy to swap out you just need the little tool.
Guess which watch is on my arm right now? I just finished an open water swim with the Instinct 2. It's an interesting watch. Great battery life but it's missing some odd things. I'll try to get a review out in the next few weeks.
@@theweirdgoonie9700 - Yeah, that's a tricky call. The battery life and durability would be better on the Instinct 2 but that's at a cost of the nicer screen on the 255, better GPS, and it's other features geared towards recovery. I guess it all depends on what you'll be using it for mostly and if you prefer not charging these things.
It's not something that I've noticed at all and I'm usually pretty sensitive to watch thickness. I really think the thickness of these watches is what makes them feel big and bulky.
Personally, I think the 955 is worth it. I need to reach out to Coros because I haven’t heard of anything upcoming from them for a while. Seems like they’re overdue for a new watch soon right? 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I think it depends on what you need. The screen is a little nicer on the 255 and the Instinct 2 has better durability and battery life. They’re both good options but I prefer the 255 for whatever that’s worth. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand strength training, cross fit, hiit and running. I only run about 10-15 miles a week now. Plan on doing a 22 mile hike in the spring also. Which do you suggest?
@@brettbrunsell5769 - For those activities I think you can get away with either. Honestly, I’d go with whichever one looks best to you. They have very different looks. Either way you’ll be happy with these. 👌
Yes, Sleep score and as part of the sleep widget and morning report. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
How you like it now.
How do you like the slate grey color?
@@davidmcquade4743 I like it. I had the 735 in the ice blue colour and another in straight black. I do prefer the slate grey as the red accent that Matt talked about does look really good. It is a smart looking watch and is standing up well to the torture my lifestyle puts it through.
@@Try_n_2Tri I ended up getting the slate grey. I'm happy I did. It looks great.
Personally I think maps a compelling reason to go for the 955. Then the other extra features are bonuses. On the other hand wish Garmin had made a 955s. Size options is one positive for the 255.
Although a 955 S with a 1.1 inch screen might be hard to see. I really like the 1.3 inch screens on these. But maps are helpful! Thanks Rob!
you may as well look for the phoenexes if you want maps
I have the larger 255 and small wrists and it is fine. I used to have the 735XT and this is slightly bigger but you don't notice it. Again, small wrists and I think it looks proportionate and fine.
Yea maps and some additional features is pretty good. So it really depends on what you use your watch for. For road running I would say 955 is overkill most of the time. For trail running, hiking, ultra, etc. 955 is definitely a steal at just about 150bucks more than 255 music.
Holy crap Matt your Visio quality has gotten soooooo good!
That is super nice of you to say Aksel! I'll just keep plugging away and trying to improve. Hopefully it'll get better. Hope you are well buddy.
My choice 955 solar. I like to run, swim, ride a bike, but my biggest passion is tennis .
It lacks hotkeys though which the 745 did have and is very convenient.
Thanks for the review, one of the better, and you compare them in a way I was looking for, others tend to overcomplicate it too much.
Thank you Haggz!!! I really appreciate you watching and commenting 🙌
Just got myself a 955 Solar - it's a great watch
I agree! It's such a good watch. Keep me posted on how you like it as you use it over the next few months and best of luck with the Tri season! 👌
Good
I have a 735xt from 2017. Great watch & has all I need as an amateur triathlete. Looking for a change & the 255 looks like a good upgrade. Thanks for that comparison. Very well done. 👍🏽👍🏽
Good choice! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Yeah I agree. I’m very impressed with this 255 as it probably shows in this video. Such a good option. Hope all is well buddy
@@mlegrand I'm doing alright. Trying to get a new, much better paying, job. Been in a creator's funk for far too long. About to snap out of it, though!
I love the Lego dudes in the intro!
Great honest review, Matt!
Wait, are you in the market for a new watch?
Nope. Not yet. This baby better last a little longer than the last!
Just keeping informed.
I believe Garmin gave the 955 the band pins that aren't quick release so you can use the pins with the quick connect straps that clip onto the pins. The pins are fatter than a normal 22mm pin which allows it to be used with the quick connect straps.
You are correct sir! I still wish they’d use the actual quick release strap on this watch. The 955 is their top of the line forerunner watch. 🤷🏻♂️
That’s awesome. So glad the updates are working for you.
Can i use fenix quick fit band with 955 ??
945 vs 255?
I think it depends on if you want mapping. Personally, I’d go for the 255.
Thank you very much for your video. Exactly what I needed.
Glad it helped!
Great comparison. I'm a 955 user. One of the reasons I choose for this model is long term. Probably it will get more newer features over the 255.
That’s a good point and something I should have mentioned in this video. It could be interesting to see what Garmin adds. Thanks Fabian!
been using my apple watch s5 for my running activity almost 3 years now, but i recently pick up the slate grey 255 non-music version. was tempted to get the 955 but after long review, i don't really need the other features (garmin/strava live segments, golfing features, preloaded maps etc.) that is on the 955. been using it for weeks now, the 255 definitely worth it.
That's super interesting to hear. I'm working on an Apple Watch review and I'll probably mention a few other watches in comparison so this is great feedback. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Nice review, Matt! I have the 255 slate gray and love it! Please, let me add the new Power metrics for running activities to your features list. 😃
💯% That would be wonderful. 👌
I choose 255music because Garmin Taiwan only promotes 255music. The first 255 buyers can get a pair of Mizuno Rider 25. I think it's a good deal.
Oh I really like Mizuno running shoes. Some of my fastest races were in the Wave Riders. 👌
My 735 just died and started looking at the 745 when I came across your videos. Now thinking maybe the 255 might be the better option for a new watch
Thanks!

@@mlegrand Thanks for the feedback Matt. I use a Wahoo cycling computer.
6.5" circumference of wrists, guess I have to try both form factors on. Cycling, road and gravel, although have a cycling computer, hiking, trail running as applications.

I just sold 9 peak for 955 non solar version and I think it worth switching.

I want the Series 200 with touchscreen! Currently I have the 245 and would buy the 255 but I am not running. Hope the 265 has a touchscreen!!

Cool video and sound track!
I would be interested to see a comparison of these guys vs 945lte
Great content!
@@RubenLangedijk - I'm guessing you'll get a bit more out of that Forerunner watch. It's just such a nice option.
Another thing is that the 255 doesn’t have the Hot Keys function (which is awesome).

@@mlegrand Thanks a lot for your reply. Really appreciate it. Keep up the good work.
Like button hit even before having watched the vid 😂 Crazy me ... I'm French !
Thanks
Hi Matt,
Great video, it helps to choose.
I did review it here: th-cam.com/video/u2Erl5-ubAc/w-d-xo.html
There are cheaper options that are perfectly fine.
@Ign C does the Garmin watch Bluetooth to the Polar H9 and give the HR metric on the watch?
watching this in July 2023, trying to make up my mind of which one of these 2 I should get. I'm not going for 965 or 265 as I don't believe a better screen resolution justifies the price.
These are both very good option at this point (July 23). The 955 has maps and a bit better battery life. 🤷🏻♂️
@@mlegrand thanks for replying mate! I won't be wearing the watch in my sleep so I think that the extra features of the 955 will not be important in my case. As long as they have same-ish battery life and gps, 255 is the way to go for me.
Great video! I can currently get the 255 for £225 or the 955 for £360 here in the UK, which one would you go for!?
Wow, both good prices. I'd go for the 955 to get the maps and the extra memory. If you never think you'll use music or maps, I'd save the money with the 255. 👌 Let me know what you end up with and what you think of it. Thanks Scott!
2 weeks + 1 week for solar? Are you sure? You need 3h a day on 50k lux to even meet their charging requirements, I feel like that’s incorrect.
I don’t personally have the solar to check but you are correct that those numbers are expecting 3 hours a day at 50k lux.
255 is everything you need 😄
It’s a pretty great option. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand thank you
3:33 that's how normal watch bands work...though admittedly they could have easily done what a lot of watch bands and watch manufacturers do is put a little slit in the back of the strap where a tiny tab comes out from the pin allowing you to use it to move it. i am deeply thankful that garmin chose to go the route of industry standard watch bands though...i own a bunch of them that are much better than anything that garmin could come up with.
What other watch bands should I try out?
Guess I´ll go with the 955 but in the end the 255 will be option if bucks can´t afford it
Yeah, the 255 is a great option and for the most part has what you need.
It's hard to pay attention when you have a bmc in the background!
It’s gone in the newer videos. 😢 I need to find a way to bring it back.
@@mlegrand that makes sense. Thanks for the response!

Undecided…signed up for my first ever sprint triathlon in September, now looking at both these watches. The 255 is currently £299 and the 955 is £349 what would you recommend?

I just want a watch that connects quickly to gps. I dont even need the most exact location, but my forerunner 45 takes so long to connect even after updating the cpe
The newer Garmins seem to connect a bit faster. I should start timing the load times but it’ll be different depending on previous GPS locks, tree coverage and 100s of other issues.
@@mlegrand I know, but I just cant understand why phones seem to have no problem to instantly find your location. And a device specially made for something struggles so much. But what do I know. Its just frustrating when you are warmed up and need to wait for several minutes bevor you run
@@frickseerose6146 - I think phones use cellular towers to narrow down the location and then they finically lock onto GPS location. For my iPhone I see a big circle and then it narrows on as a single dot.
I wonder from here on out will they always make a S version of the fenix models
I have no idea but it seems like Garmin has found a little pattern with their watch sizes.
If it’s not past the return date then sure but otherwise I wouldn’t worry about it. You’re not missing out too much. 👍

I just hope mine is not faulty/buggy. Seen lot of report that 955 had some software and touchscreen issues.

And thank you for the replies last time !
I haven't noticed any touchscreen issues. The one software bug that I noticed was the open water swimming accuracy but I think that's been fixed recently. I just haven't confirmed it because the water is freezing this time of year 🥶

Both of these would be great options. Depending on your swim workouts, you might want the more sport focused FR254. I’d also take a look at the styles and colors and see if there’s anything that you prefer. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Hi Matt,
You did a great job.

The 955 and 255 are compatible with any 22 mm quick release watch bands. The Fenix 7 is also 22 mm but the Fenix 7X is 26 mm I think.
What about intervals in running plan? This function work same on both models?
