What a pleasure to see these cars so beautifully restored. And what an incredible engine at all speeds.

Wow what a cool open practice...everything from Cobra's to 917/30's to Trans Am Boss 302

I saw this car race in 1973 at Mid-Ohio driven by Donohue--who won I believe What you noticed was how quiet the car was because of the turbo design, too bad Ferrari didnt get into Can-Am they had a wonder ful 427 CI 12 cyl

David Davis - Well, they did, or at least tried to! The 1967 Ferrari 350 Can Am put out 480 hp, but it was competing with 700+ hp McLarens. Ferrari obviously made fast cars, but with typically smaller displacement than America V8s, the Ferraris were nowhere quick enough in acceleration to compete effectively in this class. Then the 917-30 showed up in '73 and it was all over for everyone else!

Having seen Mark Donohue racing his 917/30 in 1973 it's not really the same watching others drive it.

Agreed. I saw this car debut at Mosport in 1973. Donohue was on pole with Scheckter right beside him, and those two just disappeared. On the fourth lap they caught a backmarker on the back straight and there was a minor collision.

I saw the Donohue/Penske Porsche and other turbo 917s just run away from the McLarens at Laguna Seca. Qualifying Mark clocked 55:00 with race laps turning 1:01 lap after lap just enough to stay 1/2 lap ahead of the 2nd place Porsche. The thundering big block Chevy's days were numbered in Can-Am.

Donohue's 1973 pole time at Laguna Seca was 57.374s, average speed 119.217mph.

As significant as the 917/30 was, I always thought that the 917/10 in the L&M livery was much nicer looking.

I wonder what power level they were run at.
    full boost?

    • @beyond_the_infinite2098
      @beyond_the_infinite2098 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Penske's Porsche engine was dyno'd at 1500 hp at the factory. They estimated about 1,100 hp for the race with more boost available if needed by turning a knob.

when you listen to these wonderful engines you can tell they have very hot, long duration camshafts--they were meant to make a lot of power

Sounds like the motor on the white one could use some tuning but besides that they look great.

@@Loulovesspeed engine was the synonym of motor.

@@nobedz6688 - My late Father was an electrical engineer and told me that motors were technically just that, electric motors. Engines however, utilize internal combustion. Not quite synonyms. I will admit, though, that many people don't really know the difference or just choose to ignore it!

There is a huge difference between 917/10 and 917/30, Project C.A.R.S 2 is not really a simulator and you need a decent wheel and pedal setup to drive (instead of playing).
If you want to have some taste of how it really is try 917/30 on PC in Assetto Corsa with a wheel and pedal setup and do a lot of practice, learn the racing line, master heel and toe while using a H-pattern shifter, be smooth with pedals and steering wheel and practice and practice...

After re watching I have seen something more awesome than the cars....in the background you can see a mechanic doing a wheelie on his bike at 0:32.
