The ultimate Porsche 917 recreation project

  • Is this the ultimate (and only road legal) Porsche 917 recreation project? Think of 917s and you might think of Steve McQueen in the Le Mans film... Gulf livery, flimsy, but fast AF and a car which was basically outlawed in the 24hr for being too good.
Well this car has been built to the exact spec of a 1969/70 917K and put through the IVA (independent vehicle approval) so as to obtain road registration. That means stuff like a glass windscreen (heated), wipers that work, mirrors that work and brakes/steering that mimic the original 917.
There were only 25 short tail 917s made and none of those were road legal. Dave, from Icon Engineering, has designed this car to be more rigid, safer and significantly better made than an original.

Petrolhead nirvana, soaking up the sounds, smells and feeling it generated. My favourite 917 memory was standing at Goodwood on a sunny Saturday afternoon, next to the Steve McQueen car. Love the content J, just keeps getting better and the 4k driving shots are first rate. Sam from STG drove a Kraftwerk replica on the street (recreations are out there). The guys that can and want to do these passion projects are a vanishing breed… appreciate them while we can.

We have a company in Detroit USA called RCR who makes these, or used to make these, but the chassis is not tube it’s plate aluminum mono structure. This icon 917 is truly artwork.

As a kid in the 70’s I used to draw this car and was enthralled by its reputation of wheel spinning at 200mph on the Mulsanne straight. The fact it was 3 beetle engines stuck together and my family run around was a bay window people carrier made it even more exclusive. Not bad for blasting down Tone Way. What a joy of a car.

Having owned and competed in a GT40 replica this work of love is superb! If you like the GT40 you like the 917! I think you are pitching it to cheaply when a Restomod is generally around £300 to £350K. If you succeed with the flat 12 I would say £450K to £500k as a turnkey is realistic and would attract collectors who simply can't buy one anywhere else. Perhaps explore a run of 25 with someone like Tuthill Porsche or David Brown?

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It is not a restomod and I think they would be doing them self a disservice to call that a replica car.
They have a car body shell and engineered everything below that.

Yes building a flat 12 Porsche 917 engine should be the goal. Best sounding engine ever!

Bravo! Lucky you...In 2006, I was fortunate to be allowed to drive an original 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 - and it terrified me ! With that ultra-light construction, and tiny tube frame - it looked so spindly, and dangerous. But, on the road, it was a revelation. However, the race spec engine was way to peaky and highly tuned to be usable on the road, and the NOISE ! Every pebble bouncing in the arches, the vibrations rattling every surface of the incredibly thin bodywork, and of course, no silencers with the straight through race exhaust. Wow - I drove about 5 kms in the city, and I still get goosebumps every time I think about it. I can only imagine what it would have been like on the track.

and these guys have actually done it, brilliantly actually... great job...

I've been in LOVE with the 917 from a very early age, 5 yo I think. My first 917 was a Tyco Curve Hugger slot car. In the sky blue and orange Gulf colors. Such a sexy racecar!

For me, the most beautiful and iconic racing car ever, and I had the privilege, I am 68 years old, to see them at Le Mans in the early´s 70 (70 and 71) precisely 917 K´s Herrmann/Attwood and Marko/Van Lennep, if I´m not wrong. Thank you Mr.Jonny Smith for the video.

I took 400,0000 people working on Apollo to get Armstrong to the moon, I reckon a dozen middle aged Brits could have done that if there sheds were big enough. Just awesome work guys 👌

I have loved the 917 since I was a kid in the 70s. I hoped that Porsche would do as Ford did in 05 with the GT and make a street 917. They could have used the V10 from the Carerra GT.
I remember also there was a kit car you could buy the Lazer 917, I think it used the VW engine.

I saw one of these Porsches parked at Sonoma Raceway when I was there for a superbike school. The car was so tiny and low! It was terrifying. I’m amazed that their was room in the cockpit for Derek Bell’s enormous balls. Hats off.
