Album The Bradley Barn Sessions
Utgitt: 1994
Låtskrivere: Jerry Chesnut.
Label: Showcase
"A Good Year for the Roses" is a ballad written by Jerry Chestnut and originally recorded by American country singer George Jones. It rose to #2 on the country singles chart in 1970
The Bradley Barn Sessions is a duet album released in 1994 by American country music artist George Jones.
Recording
The concept behind The Bradley Barn Sessions was to place Jones in the hands of traditionalist country producer Brian Ahern, record at Owen Bradley's legendary studios, compile a selection of the singer's greatest hits, and have him sing duets with not just some of the biggest names in country but also pop music as well. Although the album - Jones fourth for MCA - did not break the top twenty on Billboards country albums chart, peaking at 23, it features the first recorded duet between the singer and his ex-wife Tammy Wynette since their 1981 LP Together Again. The only single release from the album was "A Good Year For The Roses", a collaboration with Alan Jackson. As Jones noted in his autobiography two years later, "After the duets album was released, radio didn't know what to do with it...Alan was white-hot on the radio, and programmers wanted his voice. But some didn't want his if they had to take mine. The vast majority of Alan's other single records have gone to number one. His duet with me was his first not to crack the top 50." It actually peaked at number 57. In June 1995, the song won the Music City News Country Awards "Vocal Collaboration of the Year".

LYRICS:
A Good Year for the Roses
George Jones
I can hardly bear the sight of lipstick
On the cigarettes there in the ashtray
Lyin' cold the way you left them
But at least your lips caressed them while you packed
And a lip print on a half-filled cup of coffee that you poured and didn't drink
But at least you thought you wanted it, that's so much more than I can say for me
It's been a good year for the roses
Many blooms still linger there
The lawn could stand another mowin'
Funny, I don't even care
When you turned and walked away
And as the door behind you closes
The only thing I know to say
It's been a good year for the roses
After three full years of marriage
It's the first time that you haven't made the bed
I guess the reason we're not talkin', there's so little left to say we haven't said
While a million thoughts go runnin' through my mind, I find I haven't spoke a word
And from the bedroom those familiar sounds of our one baby's cryin' goes unheard
But what a good year for the roses
Many blooms still linger there
The lawn could stand another mowin'
Funny, I don't even care
And when you turned and walked away
As the door behind you closes
The only thing I know to say
It's been a good year for the roses
Låtskrivere: Jerry Chesnut
Two of the Very Best!!!!
Love and Heartbreak reminds us that we are alive!
J Deuce
Love both the guys! Alan & the sweet possum! I love you!Debbie from our great state of
Texas!
You found ever the Song 's thats me Heartsick!!But for this special, you have a Stone in my Heart
Now that is really country!!!!
So that easily is the SECOND best song in country music. First being “he stopped loving her today “
Great songs though they are, not even top 20 George Jones songs
I agree
Yes! THE FIRST song from George i ever heard was "he stopped loving her today" on cassette from a yard sale. Still remember that day!
Or "Stand by Your Man"
@@johnmelock1962 Me too in my back yard after work in a lawn chair July 1980 Jones has been my favorite since then....
They don’t know what country music is today. It has gotten like all the rest of the bang bang music of today.
Hello how are you doing today
It's because song writers and singers both experienced life at a early age back then. They could relay pain because they experienced it.
But they experienced pain and still went into work in the morning. Nowadays if someone experiences pain they quit.
There will never be another George or Alan.
These are the 2 best male singers in country music...bar none
Merle Haggard is hard to beat
Do not forget George Strait ! I’m kind of biased though I know him..
All of them from Alan and earlier are great.
What a good year for the roses without u Patty baby! Many blooms in my heart still linger for u! RIP 1951-2023!
Why don't they sing country music like this today?
They don't know how
It's the end of the world. P.s. pray for our country and also Israel.
God bless.....
Alan Jackson still does
Because it's not country music anymore..it's gone..no inspiration.. nothing.. just noise
I Miss 80's And 90's Country Music
When country music was still country music!
The Good Lord broke the mold after these two...
Alan is so young. And George knew he would fill their shoes.
When George hits those last few harmony notes at the end on the word "Roses".....man...that voice is just timeless. He's truly one of the greatest country singers ever. (Haggard too)
I agree completely ❤️🙏🤗
Never mistaking GEORGE JONES VOICE
Hello how are you doing
This "stuff" they call Country today, will wither and fade. But 100 years from now, this song, will still,be classic Country music.
It's because song writers and singers both experienced life at a early age back then. They could relay pain because they experienced it.
But they experienced pain and still went into work in the morning. Nowadays if someone experiences pain they quit.
Now THAT is what real country music sounds like.
It’s gone now
This is what country music is supposed to be. There will never be another George Jones or Alan Jackson.
We will never know, because they won't play "Real Country" on the radio stations, you can find it, you have to look for it. It is out there.
Agree!!! Voices beyond compare!!!
It is hard for a country fan in South Africa . Wish I was in Texas country music country.
Yes real country, a cover of an Elvis Costello song from 1981
Couldn’t agree with you more, Christopher ☝️
Greats ...Greats..Greats!!!...Two of the best....singers.....true country....if you are country...you get it........fro Tennessee myself😊

Hey how are you doing…?
@tarp11z
More so, actually...! I'm in the minority of people who think that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" wasn't even close to George's best song. I'm not sure it's in my top 10.
Who gave this song thumbs down has no idea what real country music is. Two of the greatest singers singing a beautiful, VERY real song.
FOR REAL❤
A beautiful duet by two genuine country icons. It doesn't get any better than this.
This is Alan Jackson at his best.
2 generations, 2 distinct voices, 1 beautiful song.
I almost forgot that AJ was so talented at such a young age.
What? It was a big hit for Jones in 1970 this video is from a tribute album he and other singers did for him .
It's a damn shame that country music radio would not play this song, so it barely got any recognition 😢
Why was that?
@@patrickambrose5372liberals
According to the songwriter George Jones took it to number 1.
Chris Stapleton plays it on his Sirius XM channel. These two gentlemen are magic together.
There is not enough great words to say about these two singing together! I have already listened to it at least 5 times today.
@Alan Jackson London.
Yes as George singing on heaven with his true love Tammy as all other country singers
Oh this music is awesome from the vocal, to the Organ plus the Harmonies, i love it so much, so pretty, are you a lover of good music like i do.
@@jamesjerry910ciao James! 🙋♀️😊😘💘
I'll never get over the genius writing of this song. The pain in this lyric is soul crushing. When your life is crumbling around you, and you're trying to find something, anything positive to grasp onto just to survive the moment - the rose garden outside is the best you can come up with. The lip print on the coffee, you can imagine it was the same cup that was in her hand as she came to the realization that it was over. The idea that at one moment in time, she had wants and dreams. Like she made a conscious effort to pour the coffee, the same when she made a conscious effort to stay in the relationship...but she only finished it half way, then chose to leave it. So, simple but powerful.
Dam, some things will never get old. Just love it❤
Have always been an Alan Jackson fan but no one makes me feel the music like George Jones. What a wonderful gift he was to country music.
Nice to see this video what a good performance I love this song. How are you Julie ?

I SAY WHEN HE IS SMOKING THAT CIGARETTE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK I THINK WHAT A ONE HELL OF MAN STANDING THERE!! What a man!!
Hello how are you doing
I met AJ the year he won the Best New Artist or Horizon award on one of the award shows. He was humble as I complemented him, looking down at the floor, kinda digging the toe a his sneakers into the carpet. As he thanked me after I said, "Well, you're sure filling those shoes.", I could see he started to tear up. I knew then how much he looked up to George. Two of the greatest!
What an awesome opportunity you experoencef. Thank you for sharing and commenting on Aj humble beautiful soul.
A real southern gentleman and country artist! Genuine and humble. God bless, Alan.
That had to be a blessing to talk with Alan
❤. I Love You Very Much. Alan Jackson ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of George's best songs already, add AJ and you get pure gold. Unlike some of the crap they try to call country today.
So true... I sure do miss traditional country music, I can listen to it for hours!
Love Allen. Jackson &. George. Jones
I agree 100%
bob swain you got that right
bob swain darn right
This song just rips my heart out. The lyrics, the melody , the nuance of both Geoege and Alan's vocals. Absolutely 💯 perfection. This is a country classic.
Jones just has a whiney, country, twang in his voice that is just so realistic and his pitch and inflections are great. I'd say he's got to be in the top 5 best country singers.
Top 1 in my opinion. No one is even close to the Possum. The absolute greatest singer to ever walk on this earth.
I would make fun of this type of singing for most of my life but George Jones somehow comes off not contrived or corny. Like a grandpa that smacks on his aftershave and slicks his hair back. Annnndd I'm Ready!
@@dennismosley717 couldn't agree more...everybody else is playing for second place

George Jones is a legend.
Alan and the Ol' Possum. What a brilliant collaboration.
This is why people love country music... such poetic story telling
Ha!! Hate to bust your bubble, buddy- but this is a song entirely written by Elvis Costello. And when he put it out (on one of his albums), I knew it could be a Big Country Hit. It's a classic crying in your beer tune.
True country George Jones and Allen Jackson beautiful voices these 2 have a gift.. Country Gold
@ Brian French - yes and they feel people’s hearts. The love, the joy and the pain. Life is full of all of it🤷🏼♀️

Hello how are you doing today
This performance is a treasure. It should be placed in a timer capsule to demonstrate how beautiful traditional country music used to be.
They sound good together, i'm a 56 yr. old irishman man in Kentucky & although i do not drink liquor anymore, nobody & i mean nobody could make you cry in your drink like George Jones, his voice is the epitome of country music. I'm glad he married a wife that led him to Jesus, even though he was older, he finally saw the light.

Check out UlsterScot on TH-cam. It's a series and it speaks of country music and it's roots which in part came from our kinfolk who were from Kentucky to Georgia and on East. Very interesting. :)

Damn.. George Jones has one of the most unique voices I've ever heard!
The king of my father's generation singing with the king of my generation.
George Jones is the GOAT
Mama was born in Cottontown, TN and I grew up listening to George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty and Elvis, just to name a few. This is what you call real, traditional country music. I hear some folks say, they don't like the "tear in your beer" type country music. Y'all, country music is about real life and real life can sometimes suck and be sad and depressing. I'd rather listen to this than the current state of pop-country that plays on the radio. There's no emotion that I can hear in their voices and they all sound alike and even their songs sound alike to me. No thanks :(
