Thanks for going through all this!! I’ve got two dump find 55’s and two 028’s from the same place. Already did a custom muffler on the 55 which turned out great! Next will be the pop up piston and mild port work on the stock jug. I really liked that saw you did for Dan👍
Dan’s has a 55 pop up piston and some port work. It is definitely a great runner. There is quite a bit of work that goes with the 028 piston swap, they are not a direct bolt on a go.
I may have to buy a piston yet… haven’t tore down the 028’s yet to see if they are any good but they’ve got good compression and I’ve had em both running so 🤞 should be a fun journey! Been saving up parts for this for a couple years and watching your vids is really helpful 👍 thanks JK!
I bought a new rancher 55 in 2000. Spent more time putting the chain back on the rollertip bar than I did sawing. Next day bought a new non roller tip bar. It never oiled the chain enough to suit me. I tore all that loosey goosey VI stuff loose. Its now in a 51 housing. Engine still runs good. Dont use it very much. I would rather use my 68CC 1967 Lombard or a 58 cc super XL automatic. Me and roller tip bars and plastic saws dont get along very well.
@@JKSawShop That's awesome! I'm no porter.... Yet. I need to just build a few and make them run first....lol. I'm gonna split this one just to be doing it if you know what I mean...
So do you really need to cut a relief for the spark plug? Got a hyway CP cylinder and went for the 028 because squish was horrible on the hyway kit, 0.058 if i aint mistaken, now with a 0.015 gasket i'm at 0.023 with the 028 piston, but i'm not touching the spark plug, should i still notch a dimple in it or leave it as is?
I ended up with a .010 base gasket to get to .020 squish, the popup was actually hitting the chamber with no gasket. With the .010 gasket I was able to get away with just a second gasket on the plug. I've kind of always felt my built 55 was a turd, even when it was bone stock, now it's just a polished one... LOL
This one does all right. It’s defiantly not the powerhouse that I think it should be. It would probably do a lot better if I would put the 325 chain on it.
@@JKSawShop The 254 has more stroke so I think it's going to be hard to match. It's always been my target though. My 026 is just a freakshow. A 48cc saw has no buisness running like it does.
The 028 super piston is a little taller than the 55 piston, I do have a 55 cylinder and a 55 pop up on my other 51. Just wanted to mix it up and try something different.
@@JKSawShop I've got 2 base gaskets to choose from and the head that's on it is a farmertec but the squish is like .038 with no gasket so it's pretty loose. That's what made me go with the 028 piston hopefully to get a little more compression and a double ring piston should have less blow by
Bless you JK for sharing your life and wisdom with us:) great educational video:)

@@shapeshifter7753 Thank you it means a lot to me.
That’s a cool build man I like the way it ran
It was decent
Keep up the fantastic work. Your attention to detail is fantastic my friend .!!!
Thank you Billy from Philly. I try to do the best I can most of the time.
My 55 rancher came with a 3/8 chain and a 18” bar brand new in 2000. She still runs nice today.
That is awesome. I just really like to play with those little 55s
Nice work buddy! I'm curious the longevity of that piston thinning out the top.
We will find out. I’m planning on putting a lot of run time on it
Great R&D vid Josh.
I just had an idea and thought I would try it out. I am still planning on trying to race both of those saws.
Awesome mod brother! Look forward to seeing more from this lil beast. God bless.
There will be more to the story, it’s being written now

I found a surplus of 51’s I kinda enjoyed building them.
Awesome build buddy Cant wait to see more on it!
It’s not what I expected
That's Awesome! She runs nice!🤩
This one does real good
Cool mod👍🏻 lookin forward to seeing it on the wood.
I’m going to go ahead and spoil it… It is not horrible bad, but it is not great either
That was a really good video, I actually might have learned something 🤓
I have a 41 that is toast that I want to build just to see if I can. 😆😆
I done really mean 41 for muffler delete

@@timberslasher4899 The best advice I have for the 41 is to get air to flow better, and throw a little bit of timing advance to it.
@@JKSawShop I will remember that... Thanks!
Looking good!

This one I had to
Nothing beats a failure but a try! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Always keep trying new things.
I sure as crap wish my muffler would have went on that easy lol great job buddy.
There is a trick to everything
i had trouble getting mine on, seems the casting needs opeing out to allow the studs into proper position

Longer stroke helps the 254.
Hyway makes a dome piston 46mm for the Husky 55

Some OEM 55s are 45mm and the 028 46mm piston will not fit
The closed port 55s are 45 just like the 51 and the open port is 46
Hi. do I have to make any modifications to put a stihl 028 piston in it?
Yes you need to widen were the rod’s little end goes
I'm in the middle of building two 55s waiting on an 028 piston
It works. There’s just a little bit of things you have to do, I’m going to run this one for a while and then I may end up buying a better piston.
@@JKSawShop I'm waiting on one from Lil red shed we will see what it does.
You could probably get by using the base gasket and .030 squish. That way you dont have to index the plug or relief the piston.

@@brianmorrow6355 it will pull a 20”standard 3/8 in soft wood, struggles a little in white oak. Gonna go back to .325 chain more than likely.
Now adays they tend to market throw aways. Not mamy prople work on small engines anymore
I do a lot of trying to save em
Piston clip suck
It’s a necessary evil, I can’t tell you how many of them I have lost.
