I spent the last 10 years threading my machine with the presser foot down. This is a game changer! Also, thank you for showing the thread tension and explanation when you pulled the thread and was bending the needle. I appreciate the level of detail you went into explaining everything.

Very helpful. I have a very difficult time getting the bobbin thread hooked on the cutaway at 6 o'clock. But your idea of using a tweezers to pull it through both cuts makes it a snap! Now i keep one on a magnet on the machine!
Kevin- A most sincere thank you for taking your time and effort to spread your knowledge. You alone have personally saved me an incredible amount of time, frustration and money I would have spent taking my machine in for constant repairs due to minor issues I have been able to repair on my own! You are a natural teacher, your directions are always concise and easy to understand. You explain things in a basic step-by-step method that doesn’t make me feel like an idiot yet is simple enough for even the most amateur seamstress to follow and execute. I especially appreciate that you even list the tools needed for each repair and where to purchase them. Thanks to you, not only am I able to keep my own machine in working order but my friend was trying to make masks and was having tension issues which I was able to fix for her thanks to your videos! (We were both amazed that I could actually do this as I’m not exactly a “mechanical kind of girl! 😉) Thank you again. Your videos have been invaluable.
I can't thank you enough! I'm sewing throw pillow covers for Christmas gifts and I'm getting down to the wire. Your explanation helped me get my machine to stop making nests underneath my stitches. Thank you thank you!
Oh my goodness- thank you SO much!! I had the spool cap on backwards!! I could not figure out why it kept jamming. I must have rethreaded the machine 100 times in the last day! I made that one small change and now it’s working! Thanks again!
I also had spool cap on backwards, because the Singer manual shows it the other way! There was also no explanation about cross-wound thread versus regular wound thread and when to use the other spool pin on the end. GRRRRR!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you! I've been sewing since I was young on a Kenmore and just got this Singer. It didn't have a manual and the pdf wasn't great. After trying several things I found your video and it solved all my issues. Thank you
I had mine on the wrong post too!!! I didn’t even know that post existed! In the directions it didn’t say there were two posts options Thank you so much for showing me!
Rebecca Pope The extra spool pin also used for twin needle sewing or to hold a spool of a different size vertically should you want. Either pin can be used to put a spool onto it to sew with, but if you are a new sewer, stick with the instructions here first! By the way, always turn that big wheel on right end of machine TOWARD YOU when getting bobbin thread to come up from the bobbin case area to meet the needle thread , and give yourself a good 5 inches of BOTH threads pulled gently UNDERNEATH the presser foot and back of machine to avoid thread coming out of needle when you lower presser foot and turn the hand wheel toward you again to lower the needle into your fabric. Never operate machine with needle in up position or with presser foot up, snd NEVER turn that hand wheel away from you, especially once the needle has come into contact with your fabric. Hold BOTH bobbin thread and needle thread while turning hand wheel toward you and sew a couple stitches keeping threads pulled taut. This keeps threads from falling down into the feed dogs and causing "nesting" and a loud crunching JAM. Very bad for machine even though you can fix it in a few minutes. (Can break your machine or throw timing off in rare cases when machine operator causes this error, but quite avoidable with care taken not to let it occur in the first place). Hope these tips are of help to you.
Thank you ,thank you for taking the time to explain in detail how to thred your singer correctly. Things that every video I've watched has left out. Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much. I was ready to pull my hair out. Your video helped me. My thread was wrongly placed, my bobbin wasn't right. What a mess I was and I thought I was doing it right. ( good grief ) All better for now. See you soon on my next hair pull I'm sure. 😁😁
As a newbie to sewing and this machine, this was just fantastic help with some problems I was having. You couldn't have explained it better. Big thumbs up.
Thank you for the information on the post for the thread. The problem I am having (brand new to sewing🤷🏻♀️) is that that there is no tension, I have threaded the machine at least 7 times. The first time it worked great, but now there is no tension and it doesn’t change when I turn the dial. 😩
Karen Whiteway Make sure you raise your presser foot all the way to the UP position BEFORE you thread your machine. Why? To open all tension discs so they can RECEIVE the thread. Then you can lower the presser foot if you need to AFTER you thread the machine. Thread your needle. Threading MACHINE and threading the NEEDLE are two separate processes. Hope this helps. Give it a whirl!! 😊
Thank you very much for your video, It helped a lot !! I learnt the tension was too high, stopped jamming right after I watched the entire video and fixed other things!
I have been having tension problems, this is a great place to start. I never heard of pulling the top thread until the needle slightly bent. Now going to watch your bobbin tension video. I hope you can get a timing adjustment video. Also, a friend borrowed my machine and didnt realize she had to adjust the stitch width for thicker fabric layering. The needle shredded my feeder plate and now my needle wont go to the right. I can push on the needle and and it will move to the right, but it wont stay there, it bounces back. Any advise for fixing this? I have to order a new plate so if there are any parts that would be helpful to have on hand can you give me a list? I live on Cyprus (the island) and there are no technicians here. I have to send it to Greece for any type of repairs, and the shipping alone is more than the machine. I am hoping I can do it all myself. Thank you so very much for helping us all out!
Just bought a singer hd6800c. This video helped me out. It felt like there was a break in period because nothing was helping. Then it just started working right.
Hello thanl you for this wonderful video ! Can you please provide Tips to sew through thick fabrics and layers with your sewing machine ? and what do you think about heavy duty ?
I didn't know this about which spool of thread goes where! I haven't had a problem...yet...and thanks to you I hope not to! I also still have my Singer Quantum Stylist 9985 thanks to your recommendation ages ago. It's the only machine that made the move to Mexico with me. Of course now I've replenished some others! I've been having trouble on my 9985 with the bobbin thread popping over to the wrong side of the bobbin but I think it's only when I pull the thread up so I'm keeping an eye on that. Otherwise, great machine!
@@kevinsews Thank you!!! You're a sewing machine wizard! Seriously not 5 minutes after I typed that comment I got all jammed up! I think I have thread all underneath the face plate. I need to find my husband's screwdriver to get that back screw off. Good thing I have the 4452 so I could finish.
Wow! Thanks! Learned more in a few short minutes than in the years I've had the machine! Especially that there's a THREADER!?! Searching for that vid now!
I just got one of these machines and was ready to throw it out the window..... I was trying to use a cone thread spool. As soon as I went to a regular spool on the stand-up post, everything smoothed right out.
Love your videos!! I'm sad because I bought a singer heavy duty sewing machine a couple of months ago from Amazon and they sent me a broken one. $150 waisted it was too late to return it because I waited to take it out of the box after a month.
If you can't return, then tell us how about the problem? I say this because my heavy duty machine had some problems as well, but was able to diagnose and fix easily.
I hope that will show you that Amazon is a piss poor eBay wanna be!! That said, you notify the seller and complain but first contact Amazon for return of product. I don't care if you just opened the box - if you read your manual and you are sure it is not an operational error ( meaning YOU did something incorrectly), then you need to return it for a full refund. Jeff Besos is a billionaire and it's his company that is full of sellers and many sell bad product. You get your refund and buy your sewing machine from an authorized dealer!! Do not even buy thread from Amazon who treat their workers like slaves and do not care about customers. You stay on them for that refund when they direct your call overseas. You be courteous but be strong in your conviction until you get your refund (NOT AN EXCHANGE!!). Good luck.😊
I shore appreciate your video's on these machines. I don't use mine all that much but, when I need it I want it to run correctly-----Thanks to You Kevin👍🏽
I’m a somewhat of an amateur when it comes to sewing , I don’t currently have a heavy duty machine as of yet, but, I’m considering buying one soon. Right now I just own a beginners model, the Singer M3500.
Great machine, love my 4423. But after a timing adjust I cannot for the life of me get the tension adjusted back to where it was previously. Type E/#69 thread and a Schmets 100/16 needle. Any pointers? Normally sewing Nylon(500D and 1000D), 6 layers max. No issues prior to hiccup and timing adjustment.
Using #69 on this machine can be a challenge. I did it a few years ago helping a friend on the road. We had to tighten the top tension www.kevinsews.com/download/SingerHeavyDutyServiceManul.pdf see page 22 on how to tighten the thread tension. Then we had to tighten the bobbin tension to match. After that we had to baby it a bit to get the first stitch to catch and then he was off sewing his leather seam.
I made small adjustments at a time turning the top tension dial on my Singer 4423. There was no difference. How can I fix the dial? I did adjust the bobbin tension. That did help a lot. But the zigzag and straight still need some adjusting. How do I fix the top tension dial?
If you are saying your top tension needs adjustments more then when you can get my simply turning the knob take at look at the video I posted here: th-cam.com/video/ddFcH5lnnjY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sUFHQDyRZ8NaTxT8&t=185
I purchased the Singer HD 4411. After sewing a straight line, my thread pulls out just like when you use a basting stitch. I have watched your videos and numerous others to make sure I am threading correctly (and my bobbin) but I can not get the stitches to lock. I have tried turning the tension up and down, but I'm ready to throw this out the window. Can you give me any suggestions? Thanking you in advance
Great video! I too, had my thread spool on sideways. My issue (and I hope this hasn't been addressed earlier, and if it was, I apologize), my machine had a wonderful straight stitch when I first purchased it 7 months ago, now the straight stitch is more slanted. Is this a common occurrence with these machines (I have the 4452)? I have tried re-threading, different bobbin, tension adjustments, etc, nothing seems to get that nice straight top-stitch.
I've seen this before when the needle is off and it is doing a very slight zigzag. This is a bit more of an advance repair, but if you look at the service manual it may be of some help.
Thank you so much for the video , I just get the new Singer 4452 and I have threading issue , your video is so helpful and I'm able to get it right.?Thank you and please make more video like this !
This is an excellent video with lots of great advice! The close shot of the bobbin area is about the best I have seen on TH-cam! I have subscribed! Thank you.
Hi Kevin. Great videos thank you. My issue tho is the thread from the bobbin seems to go back in the bobbin case. then I end up with 2 3 or 4 threads going back in and of course it just jams after. Any suggestion? thanks
I have a Singer 4452 that I have been using for a few months with no problems until now. When I am starting to sew on a piece that has a fold and beginning at the fold the thread gets a top birdsnest and the cloth starts to bunch up. If I begin opposite of the fold It will go along smoothly even over the fold. I have made a slight adjustment of the presser foot pressure but it still does it. Could it be the thread tension? Or something with the feed dogs?
Scott Tisdale Use a scarp piece of fabric to start then join your piece of fabric right next to it and leave a small gap so you can cut the snip the thread between the two pieces when done.
If that is the case then it is possible the machine is not designed to sew thicker fabric. If you can give me the make and model # of the machine I can take a look at it for you.
@@kevinsews I like my sewing machine two things that really frustrate me about it constantly is the feed dogs I have to start my fabric off way from the edge and then go backwards that is so stressful, The other thing I don't like is sewing multiple layers I don't have much success with that either it gets jammed.
@@kevinsews I didn't have any of that tissue paper that goes in gift bags so I used paper towel instead and it works!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
thank you Kevin...My problem (the needle thread breaking) stems from sudden high resistance behind the #3 station. All fine for a minute or so and then resistance sudsenly goes up. Is there an idling pulley in there that the thread could be falling to the side or..?? I put the tension on 0 and am getting by but...
thank you kevin! I feel like I'm having to pull quite hard on both threads to clear them out the way once they're threaded. The needles pulling back a bit even on tension 2 / 1 when the presser foot is up. Do you know what this could be?
@@kevinsews Hi Kevin, thanks for replying. I tried another thread and it seems to be working much better now - i think it was cheap thread that was getting bumpy that did it.
OMG-no where in the manual does it tell you to put the thread on this post! I am hoping this may solve my problem! thank you Kevin. What an eye opener.
Kevin Sews I’ll let you know if this fixes my issue, but I’m thinking it’s not. My machine is making a lot of noise behind the bobbin area and I may need to take it apart...
@@kevinsews Thank you so much. I just took out the bobbin holder thing did a major cleaning and found a tip of a needle that had dropped down in there. Changed my thread to where it should go and magic-it works now. Really appreciate your help. dee
I have watch your video several times and re threaded my machine carefully. However I am still having a problem with the top thread breaking. It seems to be wrapped around the pick up lever, not sure it this is the problem or the result. I have taken off the side panel to see if something is stuck in there but it seems clear. Any comments? Thanks.
A very good, quick, lesson. Can anyone give me the original position for the presser foot pressure screw. I moved mine w/o marking starting point, now dont know which position to return the plastic screw to. Thanks.
This has been very helpful, but my problem is the top thread is just going straight, seeing too much bobbin thread on top...I read if you see too much bobbin thread your top tendon is to loose... I'm up to 7 now. Can you give me some advice?
Do you show us how to fix the timing on these machines? I am not able to fix my thread issue. I did everything to clean the bobbin casing and re-thread the machine and the bottom thread keeps releasing a huge loop about every 2 inches of stitches. Anyone have any suggestions? Or know if there is a How to fix the timing video?
Omg thank you so much!!! I figured it out I think I set up the string wrong omg thank you it’s finally sewing I just bought this too. I’m saving this video forever
Kevin, My singer one sewing machine sews straight stitches right, but when I use the decorative stitches the fancy stitch is on the bottom of the fabric ? The machine is computerized .
Thank you for your videos! They are so easy to follow. Your voice is also pleasant to listen. I was watching your video because I am a beginner and had 3 machines already exchange because I thought i broke it everytime or that it was malfunctioning lol but this video is very helpful! I have subscribed.
Got a new heavy duty and tried everything on the threading tension and still getting thread stuck in the machine and loose loop underneath. Could this a timing issue as we had to fix a timing hook issue as well.
Connie Moy One way to find out if it is a needle thread tension issue... try grabbing ahold of the thread on the top side of the machine to create more tension. If this solves the issue then it is definitely a top thread tension issue.
Connie Moy Always turn the hand wheel toward you and anchor needle in fabric before sewing. Moving the hand wheel away from you can cause nesting and eventually a jam. And hold threads taut in back of the machine bed before you make a few initial stitches. Then you can let go of them. But remember: this is a manual machine and the needle won't return automatically to the down position. Always turn the big wheel TOWARD you if needle in up position or you will have problems because that wheel was never meant to go against its purpose for being there. Some sewers find out the hard way, so just trying to remind you to always turn it towards you if you want to bring up the bobbin thread or if you are ready to sew and require needle to sink into fabric before stepping on the foot pedal. 😊
Connie Moy I hope you are able to sew and have some enjoyment. Did you rethread, making sure you didn't miss any tension disks, keeping the presser foot raised to highest position while you threaded the machine to open up all the tension disks to receive the thread? 😊
The fabric isn’t moving when I start sewing, why might this be? I adjusted the tension and even slowed down the pedal. Do I need to adjust the footer too? I’m confused about this. Thank you!!
My 4423 is brand new and it worked fine while trying different stitches. Now i watched your u tube and threaded step by step but even turning by hand 2 stitches, the cage is pulled half out, Any suggestions? BOB
@@kevinsews HI KEVIN,Yes it was the small shiny little lever that sits just above the bobbin case. It got bent up when i had BUNCH OF THREAD GET UNDER THE CASE,TRYING TO RAISE IT,AND BENT THAT TINY PART A BIT.Opps sorry, had caps on. Well i cleaned out that bunch of thread and it's working like a champ now BOB
I bought a Singer HD 4452 and the accessory kit did not have the horizontal spool cap. Do i need to buy one specifically made for that make and model? It seems to me they should be universal in terms of both the outside diameter and the internal diameter of the hole. Am I wrong?
Thank you so much. Best tutorials I have seen. I hate that they do not include pamphlets and detailed instructions any more. I am old school and do much better with paper and really good instructions. Thank you!
OMG! Could this have been the bulk of my thread tension troubles??!!! That top spindle for the horizontal thread broke off my machine shortly after I bought it!! This is the first video I’ve seen discussing the way the thread is wrapped in the spool!! Even the sun get instructional video for the Heavy Duty models doesn’t say anything about this!! Or the quick start guide! Kinda really sucks if this is the case, mostly due to the frustration from trying to correct it. Sorry for whining at ya! Sure appreciate your videos here!!
The Rasant thread is too big for the horizontal spool. The vertical does not stay put when I put thread on it, ie the vertical spool flies out of its position and behind the sewing machine cabinet. I have the Heavy Duty Singer CP6355M. Here in Australia Rasant thread is the best quality thread you can get for garment sewing, as it does not break. I mostly do garment sewing.
Thank you so much for this video. I follow all the steps as you mention but my Singer 4423 still not making perfect stitches. That Grey button on your machine is all the way down on your machine; on mine is about 3/16" up. Would this be the problem? There is no gap between the stitches. Any suggestion? Once again thank you.
I had just got myself thicker thread. I make dog collars and I had been just layering think thread. Decided to get thick thread so it was not so many passes in stitches. I have given up on using thick thread. It just doesn’t pass through the bobbin spring without a bit of force so the bobbin jumps around. So frustrating. Maybe the thread is way too thick. But I though this machine was for that purpose. Pretty frustrating. Maybe with my projects it’s time to get a Juki
Thank you! Can I go from forward stitching to rearward stitching and back again without stopping the movement of the stitching before changing direction?
I have my tension pretty much perfect yet when I switch to the diagonal stitching the fabric gets like cinched together like both tensions are too tight. I know I'm supposed to loosen the top tension for those stitches but do I need to loosen the bobbin tension too? Could the bobbin tension be tight from the factory?
Thank you so much! I spent two hours wanting to die because nowhere in the instructions or manual or anywhere did it specify the different type of thread needed a different attachment, Atleast nowhere I saw. Thank you! All the trouble shooting didn’t mention it either.
I have a brand new singer 4111 and the top of the bobbin won't move. So bobbin wont catch. Please help. The tread won't Move across like it should. Been trying for 4hrs. Thanks. I'm ready to take the machine back.
Kevin where are the tension buttons on 66p0c? i reviewed your video in threading but bobbin threads is very easy to . I have a round white button on top and another dial toward front of machine. I am very unhappy no written instructions came with this expensive machine. I really wanted to do sewing. Can you help?
I am having so many problems with three machines and repair is closed down. Bobbin toward the end of the thread upper thread winds onto the bobbin jamming. I hate plastic bobbins. I love metal bobbins. I have an antique I need someone to get it down for me. It is heavy. I have a brother a singer a nechi, all drive me nuts with the bobbins. I have antique singer. I need a good suggestion on a new machine. I had an incredible machine. It was a used industrial and we were stretched for space and it got taken to the thrift store which really annoyed me.
Hi Row. Where are you located? I recently got a Necchi. If you're on Long Island, I can help you get it down. Do you have the Necchi manual? I got mine at a thrift store but no manual.
Kevin, would you know why the thread releases from the lever? It does it every few minutes. It is threaded correctly, but it just seems to release from the lever and its impossible to use. The machine is fairly new. Thank you.

My pleasure!

As a newbie to sewing and this machine, this was just fantastic help with some problems I was having. You couldn't have explained it better. Big thumbs up.
You're welcome!
Thank you for the information on the post for the thread. The problem I am having (brand new to sewing🤷🏻♀️) is that that there is no tension, I have threaded the machine at least 7 times. The first time it worked great, but now there is no tension and it doesn’t change when I turn the dial. 😩
With the foot lowered when you pull the thread through the needle eye it doesn't have any tension?
Karen Whiteway Make sure you raise your presser foot all the way to the UP position BEFORE you thread your machine. Why? To open all tension discs so they can RECEIVE the thread. Then you can lower the presser foot if you need to AFTER you thread the machine. Thread your needle. Threading MACHINE and threading the NEEDLE are two separate processes. Hope this helps. Give it a whirl!! 😊
Kevin Sews I don’t know why I didn’t get notified of your response. I’m going to play with it again tonight. Gingers crossed it works okay.

I am on the road right now. When I get back I will do a quick video to show you how to adjust the needle position.
Just bought a singer hd6800c. This video helped me out. It felt like there was a break in period because nothing was helping. Then it just started working right.

I've been having trouble on my 9985 with the bobbin thread popping over to the wrong side of the bobbin but I think it's only when I pull the thread up so I'm keeping an eye on that. Love your videos!! I'm sad because I bought a singer heavy duty sewing machine a couple of months ago from Amazon and they sent me a broken one. $150 waisted it was too late to return it because I waited to take it out of the box after a month.
I sorry to hear that!
you should not let that stop you from requesting a return. i've gotten authorization to return stuff past the 30-day timeframe. you have to ask.
Good luck.😊
You just saved me some serious frustration and confusion! I had no idea about the different kinds of spools and how they're supposed to sit 🤦

Great machine, love my 4423. But after a timing adjust I cannot for the life of me get the tension adjusted back to where it was previously. Type E/#69 thread and a Schmets 100/16 needle. Any pointers?

Using #69 on this machine can be a challenge. I did it a few years ago helping a friend on the road. We had to tighten the top tension www.kevinsews.com/download/SingerHeavyDutyServiceManul.pdf see page 22 on how to tighten the thread tension. Then we had to tighten the bobbin tension to match. After that we had to baby it a bit to get the first stitch to catch and then he was off sewing his leather seam.
Very good threading and Bobbin issues, I will follow all video’s you make for beginners
I hope it helps you.
I made small adjustments at a time turning the top tension dial on my Singer 4423. There was no difference. How can I fix the dial? I did adjust the bobbin tension. That did help a lot. But the zigzag and straight still need some adjusting. How do I fix the top tension dial?

Thank you for the info, its very helpful. My singer confidence 7640 is only sewing in reverse, what can I do to fix it?

Hi Kevin. Great videos thank you. My issue tho is the thread from the bobbin seems to go back in the bobbin case. then I end up with 2 3 or 4 threads going back in and of course it just jams after. Any suggestion? thanks
Pull enough thread out of the bobbin case so you can hold on to it, along with the needle thread for the first 2 or 3 stitches.

Hi,I hope you could help me, I have hobby machine, with thicker fabric the bobbin does not spin. It only sews normally with very thin fabric...
If that is the case then it is possible the machine is not designed to sew thicker fabric. If you can give me the make and model # of the machine I can take a look at it for you.
That raising of the presser foot is the most crucial step when threading the machine so it's less likely to jam.
Yes, i t is.
@@kevinsews I like my sewing machine two things that really frustrate me about it constantly is the feed dogs I have to start my fabric off way from the edge and then go backwards that is so stressful, The other thing I don't like is sewing multiple layers I don't have much success with that either it gets jammed.

thank you Kevin...My problem (the needle thread breaking) stems from sudden high resistance behind the #3 station. All fine for a minute or so and then resistance sudsenly goes up. Is there an idling pulley in there that the thread could be falling to the side or..?? I put the tension on 0 and am getting by but...
Okay retread it and confirm the thread pulls freely after each stage. Make sure your presser foot is up before you start threading it.

Kevin, My singer one sewing machine sews straight stitches right, but when I use the decorative stitches the fancy stitch is on the bottom of the fabric ? The machine is computerized .
Your timing might be off. Zigzag will expose this issue first.

I was watching your video because I am a beginner and had 3 machines already exchange because I thought i broke it everytime or that it was malfunctioning lol but this video is very helpful! You are so welcome!
Kevin Sews thanks for the advice and will try it again.
Jude Jane Thanks for responding and the advice.
Thank you!!
Remove the fabric and raise the presser foot. Press the peddle and see if the feed dogs are moving.

Class 15 plastic only. Don't use metal because they bend way to easily. Brand hasn't really mattered to me.
I had just got myself thicker thread. I make dog collars and I had been just layering think thread. Decided to get thick thread so it was not so many passes in stitches. Kevin, would you know why the thread releases from the lever? It does it every few minutes. It is threaded correctly, but it just seems to release from the lever and its impossible to use. The machine is fairly new. Thank you.
I don't understand what you mean by the lever.
So what about if the top thread is messing up under the bottom it’s not the bobbin the top thread isn’t locking in right on my machine
It can be that the thread is being restricted from wrapping around the bobbin as it passing through to picked up the top thread.
