    Just a quick tip for anyone stuck on the lofting part:
    There’s an option in the intersect project panel where you can select Body. After selecting it you can project the bottom of the cylinder and create a loft with that projection.

    Been really enjoying your tutorials so far, thank you so much! Managed to do this one just fine but there were some points in there where I was thinking "what am I actually doing?" It would be good to have a little more explanation as to what exactly is going on when choosing some of the tools/options so we know *why* a certain tool/option is chosen. I'm sure this will come with practice though!

    I had a strong resistance against Fusion360, in great part due to the poor teaching experience I had from a friend.
    This series made me not only overcome this resistance, but also embrace Fusion360 as one of the main tools in my workflow. Thanks a lot, man!!

      @@ProductDesignOnline Thank you so much for this great series! I am really enjoying these lessons, and am amazed at what I can do with this software already.
      I was also having a hard time with the loft tool. I think the problem lies with the pipe. Looking closely at the end of the pipe, the exterior seems to be a very rough circle, more like an 18 sided polygon. the problem seemed to be when I chose the two circles to project, the outer circle was much higher resolution, leaving gaps between the pipe, and the circle. I am assuming that makes it not a solid selection. I'm not really sure, but it worked after I messed with it a bit, so I guess that had something to do with it. hopefully that will help someone.
      Do you know why the pipe would have been made with so few sides? The internal circle seemed smooth?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rikcollins4447 As far as I'm aware, there is no alternative pipe. The only thing I can think of is it may have been an issue with the graphics card or possibly another bug with the software. your tutorials are the perfect balance of information vs. brevity, which makes me very happy. Correct pace, great examples, and you show a great respect to the audience's capacity to understand what you're doing without wasting time. Thank you very much.
    I do have a question though, regarding the app / file system in Fusion 360. I'm currently on a free "startup" license. I don't have a problem paying (outright) for software, however, if I get the full version, am I able to use the app "off the grid"? I mean, can I store Fusion 360 documents as regular files in MacOS, just I would for a EPS or SVG file? I can't actually see where the files are currently stored. I get really uneasy when I have to rely on a network connection in order to work or access my files.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael - thanks for the kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment on my tutorials! In regards to storing files on your computer, I'll try to address some of the common workflows/concerns:
      When you hit the save button inside of Fusion 360, your files are stored on the cloud, which can be accessed by visiting A360. However, a locally cached version is also saved - but the cache will be deleted after a certain amount of time. This amount of time is defined in your Fusion 360 Preferences > General tab > "Offline cache time period day(s)." Your cached files can be accessed on your local machine, should you need to work offline.
      On MacOs, your cached F360 the files are stored in a folder that is hidden by default - Here's an Autodesk help article that explains how to locate the folder - knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-locate-locally-cached-files-in-Autodesk-Fusion-360.html
      The cached files are the .F3D (Fusion 360 archive files). You can copy and paste them to other folders on your Mac. Additionally, if you want to store specific design files then you can always export them from your Fusion 360 data panel.
      If you plan on working offline and want to make sure a file is cached, especially a file that you haven't worked on in a while, then you can right click on the file in your data panel and select "add to offline cache." OR simply export the file to your local machine as you are able to import/upload files to Fusion 360 without an internet connection - just note that they won't back up to the cloud until you are reconnected to the internet.
      I hope this clears some things up! Let me know if you have any questions after reading this. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Thank you Kevin for this series! I'm really enjoying it so far. I had a question regarding the project to surface tool you used for the coil - it involved choosing a surface to project on (5:52), and you chose the XY plane i believe. How did this result in the helical sketch being projected around the surface of the pipe and not on the XY plane like an orthographic 2D projection? This confused me. Hope you can clarify, thanks!

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Palash. That's a great question. When you "Project to a Surface" you can project the geometry of 3-dimensional shapes. You still need to select a plane that the sketch is created on, but it essentially creates a 3-dimensional sketch.
      If you check on your setting in your preferences dialog you can actually create 3D sketches while sketching out geometry. However, 2-dimensional sketches are usually sufficient.
      Most of the time you'll be needing to project sketches...you'll find yourself only needing 2-dimensional projections. Cheers, Kevin :)

    • @vincemiccio
      @vincemiccio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProductDesignOnline I'm still mystified by this. How did specifying a plane to project on cause the coil to be projected around a cylindrical surface? I would have expected to have to select the pipe surface at some point. Can you provide some more detail about this?

    As always - great instruction. I can replicate what you do but still struggling to know what's happening during the projection at 5:57 (even after looking at your supplemental video on project/include). By picking the coil for both the face AND the curve, are you projecting the curve of the coil onto the surface of the coil? Where is the "curve" of the coil - the center line? Since this ends up being a 3d sketch, does it matter which plane you select to start the sketch? When projecting onto the surface of the coil - why does the projection end up on the outside? Why didn't you project to the surface of the pipe - wouldn't that be clearer?

    • @ProductDesignOnline

      Michael Shannon - Thanks, great feedback! I have been getting better at trying to make sure I also explain "why." With that said, sometimes I have to omit it to not get too sidetracked, especially in some of these longer tutorials. I have on the to-do list to do a whole video on all of the different "project" features because I've found they are really confusing to new years. My goal is to eventually have enough videos that if I can't explain why in that particular tutorial I can link to another video that does go more in depth.

      Sorry for not being clear, I forgot there was another intersect operation. I am talking about the intersection of the base of the pipe followed by the loft command. Just after minute 8.
      Thanks for the incredibly fast response.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries!
      You'll want to make sure to hold down the shift key and select the to circular entities at the bottom of the pipe. Then, when you use the "intersect" project feature in the sketch dropdown list (sketch > project folder > intersect) it will re-create the lines on the surface chosen, which is why I chose the bottom of the pipe as the surface. This basically is a faster way to create those two circles than creating a sketch on the bottom of the pipe and selecting the circle sketch feature and creating the circles one by one.
      As far as the loft command, I created an offset plane in order to create a point to loft to. Then the loft can easily be created by selecting the circle sketch as the first "profile" and selecting the point as the second "profile."
      I hope this answers your question?? If not, I'm happy to elaborate more on something else. Cheers, Kevin :)

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Ken! Great question. I'll have to make a video solely covering the sweep command to discuss more of this in detail. In short, the "single path" method only works with closed profiles (as the profile) and simple geometry paths that are on a FLAT planar surface. The key thing here is that this sweep was following a 3-dimensional sketch (the helix) so we needed to define that guide surface (the cylinder). I hope that clarifies it a bit. Cheers, Kevin :)

    I am following your series of videos. There are really helpful. I got a doubt: Why did you have to use Single Path+Guide Surface for using sweep command??Why didn't just single path work?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, Vishnu. That is a great question! In this scenario, it is because of the spiral helix. Fusion 360 doesn't know how the profile shape should sweep around the spiral, since its twist and turns into so many directions. By giving F360 that extra input of data of the guide surface it is able to understand that we want the profile to follow the spiral helix and remain touching the guide surface. Ultimately, it comes down to the complexity of the sweep you are trying to complete. In general, simple sweeps just need the single path, more complex sweeps need more data to complete (guide rail) and very complex sweeps such as this need the guide surface. I hope this helps! Cheers, Kevin :)

    • @ProductDesignOnline

      Hi, Tesla 5869. I have a video that discusses the project command in more detail - th-cam.com/video/WAs144r-Xko/w-d-xo.html
      In short, projecting to the end of the pipe recreated the circle geometry on the end of the pipe, without having to create a new sketch on the end and draw each circle one-by-one. The general idea with the project command is to "project" the geometry from existing surfaces to the desired surface to save time from having to create it again. Cheers, Kevin :)

      Hi, Abdulaziz Kadri. That error message is due to the chamfer size being great than the size of the surface you're trying to apply it to. Great tutorial!
    One question: At 8:00 we have the body "Metal Spiral", which is separate from the body "Pipe". When we create the tip of the Auger using the Loft + Join (9:20) on the Pipe, the Metal Spiral body gets joined to Pipe and disappears as a separate body. Is this because the Metal Spiral body intersected the plane we did the Loft operation on, or is this a Fusion bug? Same thing happened for me.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question - That is correct! It's because they intersect. If you want to leave the other body as it's own then you can change the loft operation to "new body" which will ensure they all remain as individual bodies. Cheers, Kevin :)

      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, John. First, I'm glad to hear you got it to work on the second try. As far as why the offset plane was different... it's likely that it was due to where you where clicking/selecting. I looked at someone else's file a while back and found that they had selected the edge of the pipe, whereas, I clicked on the bottom face of the pipe. Do you remember where you clicked the first time? • @zcqw4a1

      I got stuck here too. The Loft part was giving me errors. I think it's because I'm using a newer version of Fusion 360. But I got it working by skipping the Create => Project/Include => Intersect that you do at 8:20 in the video, and I just made a new sketch at the bottom of the cylinder instead.
      At 8:20 you shift select the two circles at the bottom, and you go to Create => Project/Include => Intersect. I got lost here for a while. I couldn't find Intersect, so I pressed S and typed Intersect and clicked on it. I clicked OK on the dialog box to close the Intersect tool. At this point in the newer Fusion 360, it's in sketch mode, but in your version it's not. If I exit sketch mode from here and then construct an offset plane 25mm for the point, I'll get an error when I try to make the Loft.
      So instead I created a new sketch, and I clicked on the bottom of the cylinder as the working plane. I drew 2 circles on top of the existing circles of the cylinder, and I clicked finish sketch. Then I clicked Construct => Offset Plane, set it to 25mm, then right-clicked => create sketch on the new plane, created the point in the center and clicked finish sketch. Now I'm able to do the Loft tool without any errors.
      I don't know what the Project/Include => Intersect tool is for or if it's important. But I guess the loft isn't really connected to the cylinder now? Let me know if it makes a difference.

      Hi Argo Isenough. Great question! Nope - it would've been better to select "new body" to keep the metal spiral separate. I didn't realize that as I was recording... every now and then I get too caught up in trying to speak clearly/record/click with my mouse that I don't realize something like this.
      Thanks for bringing this up! Cheers, Kevin :)

    Why did the Body "Metal Spiral" disappear after creating the cone for the pipe with the Loft command???

    BASIC QUESTION - I'm struggling to create a new sketch on a new plane. Really simple I know but no matter what I do, when I come to do a new sketch it still uses the previous plane. Any help would be great thanks so much!
    I've tried the following.
    1. Right clicking on the new face, selecting ‘create sketch’ (it still sketches on the old plane.)
    2. Clicking ‘create sketch’ on the top left. (it still sketches on the old plane.)

      Hi, 123456789ten. Strange - the only thing I can think of without seeing what's going on is to make sure you hit the "Stop Sketch" button in the toolbar if you're currently in an open sketch. If you try to create a new sketch while in an active sketch it won't work.
      If possible, could you share a short screencast of the problem? That may help me notice something that is wrong. Cheers, Kevin :)

    why do we have to "project" the spiral? not sure i'm understanding the project feature/need

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, MrScrappydo17. Great question. In order to use the sweep tool as I did in this tutorial, you'll need to have a guide path for the sweep to follow. Guide paths have to be sketch geometry (lines, splines, etc) not model geometry (bodies/components).
      Therefore, I projected the sketch from the spiral helix body to create the spiral helix sketch geometry... because Fusion 360 does not offer a native way to create sketch geometry in the form of a spiral helix (at least not at this time).
      Here's another video of mine where I go into more detail on the project sketch feature, which may help clear things up even more -> th-cam.com/video/WAs144r-Xko/w-d-xo.html
      Please let me know if this explanation helped! Cheers, Kevin :)

      @@aymaneelhadaf1627 That error is generally caused by not having a closed profile. The other reason could be that your sketch point is not on a construction plane further away from the profile. Hello Kevin & all: Like a few other comments, I struggled to get the "Loft" to work as described. (Chances are as I have seen in quite a few of my earlier mistakes, I made an error earlier in the design that prevented the Loft from working, I have seen this more than once and now I always stop and check when I see my result different from the tutorial.). So, seeing as I need to spend time today setting up my desktop for dual boot as Windows 7 support is ending (GRRRR!!!! don't get me started...) I instead drew an extra center circle on the bottom outer edge of the pipe and was able to mimic the tutorial and get the same (I think) result using the loft command with the circle and point instead of the profile and point. More than one way to deliver microwave ovens....

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, William. The most common issue I've seen (while using the Project command) is users have selected the edge of the pipe instead of the bottom profile. If you want to share the link to your file I can take a look at it to see if that's what happened. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Using "new" Fusion version the Loft command fails (at about 9:28 in video) with an error saying "There was a problem combining geometry together.
    If attempting a Join/Cut/Intersect, try to ensure that the bodies have a clear overlap (problems can occur where faces and edges are nearly coincident)."
    Everything looks the same until I change the cut to "join" then I get the error.

      Stuck at the same spot. This tutorial wasn't hard on itself, but the new version of Fusion makes it a little harder I think. I managed to do everything but I get the same error

    • @jerinabraham7304

      I had that issue too. I fixed it by redoing the projection sketch. I originally selected the xy plane but this time I selected the ring at the bottom where the loft would emerge from. Then I selected both circles that make up the ring and then created the projection with the intersect. After that I was able to create the loft to the point.

    Dec 2022 - a few significant interface changes along with a different workflow surrounding creating planes before/after initiating sketches made this one impossible for me to follow. Projecting seems to be different in my newer version. Watched the video in its entirety to get the general feel of the order of operations. May revisit when my skillset allows me to find all of the workarounds.

    • @joshualebo6820

      Solved it a different way based on another tutorial. Created a square profile coil, selected the outer face and did a press/pull outward to create the blade. Always more than one way to accomplish a goal.

    • @howardbaxter2514
      @howardbaxter2514 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the new projection method makes these old videos very frustrating. What I found out is the once you create the circular coil, it creates a path line along the outside edge. Use that path line instead since it is pretty much impossible to project onto a surface now.

    I can't find project/include in new version of fusion 360 where can I find it?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the new UI you'll find the "project/include" command in the "Create" dropdown, but ONLY when you're in the SKETCH tab. The sketch tab will only be shown in your toolbar when you're in an active sketch environment. You'll have to create a new sketch first.
      Alternatively, you can search for the project/include feature by using the keyboard letter "S" to activate the shortcuts box > search for the desired feature.
