      Got the same error, but solved it by using arcs instead (I see that that's one of the alternative solutions you give). Is there a particular reason not to use arcs in the first place? Thanks!

    *IMPORTANT* Be sure to apply the sketch fillets ONE at a time. Applying them both as I did in the video resulted in inconsistent results due to Fusion 360's rendering engine. If you apply them ONE at a time that will avoid the "Anti Parallel" error.

      Product Design Online I added them one at a time which seemed to fix the “anti-parallel” error. However, now when I try to use the sweep function, my paper clip got broken up into segments, and it’s also not letting me manually drag the sweep across the path. I don’t know what i’m doing wrong.

    For those who are struggling with the anti-parallel issue, this is what worked for me... draw out the paper clip dimensions and make sure all dimensions are locked. delete all existing constraints. add vertical constraints to all vertical lines. add fillets one by one. If it still refuses to work (for me it kept failing on the bottom curve) then you can take 0.1mm off each fillet. For the bottom curve for example, you would fillet each corner by 3.24

    • @chillyspoon
      @chillyspoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - adding the fillets one by one sorted me out - although I didn't need to remove the existing constraints because all of the vertical lines already had them.

    Had several goes with varying problems. After reading all the comments from other users I finally got there. I used smaller fillets but also only applied one at a time. Not sure which change made the difference but the final result was spot on. In a way I'm glad there was a few problems along the way as it all adds to the learning. Having run into issues, with the start direction error, I found that If I take a dimension of the fillet and divide it by 2 (5.5/2 then hit enter), that solves the problem. To eliminate the issue of constraints, (if someone is having trouble with those), simply just use your line tool to sketch out a rough and then dimension the sketch after. You won't have to worry about angles and constraints as fusion understands that you're working in a 2d sketch. Thanks for the lessons. You've brought me further.

    I worked around the incomplete sweep problem by zooming in real close to where the fillets meet at the apex of each arch, deleting the tiny segment in between them and then editing the arch segments so they connect. Three in all to fix. I tried to simply connect the arch and the tiny line segment but that didn't go well. Novice here so I'm sure there is a better way but it worked! Learning a lot because I make mistakes but don't move on until each day's model is complete. Thanks for the great playlist Kevin!

      Hi, viswak. Did you add the vertical constraints to the vertical lines before trying the sweep? Those vertical constraints should ensure that they are both vertical/parallel with one another. In some scenarios, you could use the parallel constraint; however, in this case, that would overconstrain the sketch.
      Double check that you have vertical constraints. If that doesn't seem to fix it then please share the public link of your file as a reply to this comment and I'll take a look. Cheers, Kevin :)

    First of all, thank you for the simple and clear tutorials. Very easy to follow along!, although sometimes, due to the updated UI, it can get a bit tricky.
    Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you can also specify measurement of the fillets using the divide operation. (this is in case you have more precise dimensions and don't want to do the math) For example for the first pair of fillets, you can type 7.5/2 and the program calculates the 3.75 once you hit enter.

    Thanks!! Loving these tutorials. I still had problems with anti parallel even after applying constraints and filleting one at a time. I decided to remove the fillets and apply a tangent ark instead worked wonders. I think it might have something to do with how the fillets interact with each other at the end points as I could only sweep up until the ends of the paper clip before receiving the error. I'm getting more and more confident and less frustrated! thanks again!

    Done with your 2 how to videos. This is the first time I use this app. And I wish that the dimension lines have different color. When I downloaded the new version, it looks like they read my thoughts and they now change it to green. This really helps me a lot to distinguish the sketch line and dimension lines.

    I am learning Fusion 360 and I think the speed and explanation are clear and very accurate. I really liked learning how to make the clip (revolver function), but I think it could be more interesting if the clip is not flat only on two axes, what I measure is learning how to sketch, but in the space.

    If you get this error "ERROR: The start direction of the path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment", then read on for a possible solution that worked for me.
    Keep getting this error? Here is one way that I got past the error.
    After many attempts to fix I kept getting the same antiparallel error.
    I started over and this time I didn't force any dimensions with the key. I did not set any angles either. Everything worked as in the video.
    Maybe, once the dimensions are constrained the fillet operation shortens the constrained dimension and fails to follow the path needed when using the sweep operation.
    All I know is that it works now.
    My 2nd attempt, that worked, is using the Line tool and on the arcs, I held down the left mouse button and moved over the proper radius and an arc was created for me. I never had to leave the Line tool until the path was finished. Course, the paper clip is longer since the line dimensions are not changed like when I used the fillet.

      Hi, Charles. Thanks for sharing this! I found, with the help of a few others, that applying the fillets one-by-one produces consistent results. I've found that the way I applied them (two at a time) in the tutorial does not produce significant results because of how F360 processes the calculation. I was unaware of this at the time of recording this, but I haven't seen anyone experience issues after applying the fillets one at a time. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Ran into the antiparallel issue, had all the vertical constraints, swapped them for one vertical and three parallel, tried reducing the fillet by 0.02, double checked the location of the issue (on the third iteration of the sketch) by unchecking chain and slowly extending the path length which that time at least showed the problem was the lower right fillet. Restarted (fourth iteration) and this time did each fillet one at a time - not only did I have no issues with sketch parts moving around (even without additional constraints) but the sweep worked perfectly, albeit with needing to select the path as multiple parts.
    If I had to make a vaguely educated guess, 360 isn't evaluating the results consistently when you ask it to do the fillets two at a time, possibly because of equal-priority order of operations combining poorly when constraints are being removed/modified, and probably not helped by the fillets being so close to one another (hence reducing the size seems to have helped some). This would explain the seemingly random way it's affecting people - some are getting lucky and everything works, some of us get almost all the way there, some halfway there, and others run into trouble at the first curve. And results (positive or negative) aren't consistently reproduceable, because it's a toss up as to which instructions hit the processor for execution first.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing this, Baiswith! Great observation with everything... I'll have to agree that it seems like both fillets being applied at once are the issue causing the inconsistent results.

Then do a 3 point arc and click left side, then right side, then tangent/middle point on the top. To get rid of the excess lines, click trim, selecting the extra bit of line you want to get rid of. Makes it super easy. Thanks again!

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-Gruntled Hi Martin. The way Fusion 360's sweep command processes/understands the lines does not like the result produced by the double-fillet. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't, because it doesn't produce the same results each time - essentially it's a quirk in how the program reads the fillets converging at the midpoint.

    I just spent and hour trying to get the sweep function to work appropriately I should have read the comment s first haha. I was not able to get the sweep function (SF) to work past the first bend in the paper clip. I ended up doing three sweep functions. The first SF rounds the top bend and stops at the halfway point in the second bend where i create another 1mm profile circle, the second SF picks up from where the first ends and goes to the halfway mark in the last bend where i placed another 1 mm profile circle, the third SF goes from the inner end of the paper clip to the half way point in the inner most curve to finish the paper clip off.
    This is definitely a brute force method of completing the project. I'm going to try it again but do as Kevin recommended and create each fillet one at a time and see if that will let me do one continuous sweep through the entire paper clip.

    I solved all problems mentiones one by one but in the end the sweep stops at each 90 degree turn segment, had no idea why, so I had to click several times to complete the clip. Interestingly I do not have the black line on the 90 degree turn points as you (on the curved part of the clip). I think F360 has changed a lot since you did the videos. I have been struggling in the previous tutorials with the new operation of the toolbar and all the problems related. Its just a year since you released the videos but I think its time to redo the oldest to be on par with the current software characteristics. Thanks for the tutorials of course!

      @ProductDesignOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Mateyhv1. That is correct. When applying the fillets one at a time (to avoid the anti-parallel issue) you will need to select each part of the segments. The black lines you're referring to are simply a visual style setting.
      Head down to the bottom of Fusion 360 where you see the desktop monitor icon that is labeled "Display Settings." From there, hover over the visual style flyout and select "Shaded with Visual Edges Only". Yours is likely set to "Shaded".

    Hey I know it's been a while since you made the video but I wish to let guys know about a few tips: changing the view is as easy as shift+mouse middle button; instead of using two sketches you could place a circle on a different plane choosing it after selecting center point; you don't need to do any calculations for dimensions in case you need to multiply or divide it, simply type in 6.5/2 for example

    Amazing videos. I had zero problems until this one. The fillet issue that all others had. Followed you step by step 3x before I started messing with my fillets. I had to reduce them to leave "clearance" (.05 was plenty for me; less would likely work too) at the intersection. I could work around this by getting rid of the perpendicular constraints before I tried my full fillets, but it would still freak out on the 3rd and final fillet no matter what. I tried using dimension lines to measure what was going on and my best clue was that the fillets could not meet perfectly - there seemed to be a "lost" .01mm somewhere for some reason... at least that's what I saw before F360 freaked out and told me I was overconstraining everything (clearly I have much to learn and am scared to break everything currently.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Joel. Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you were able to get it to work by reducing the fillets by 0.05 as that seems to be the best "workaround" for now.
      I go further into constraints (applying them and why to apply them) later on in this series. Hopefully, after the series you'll have a much better understanding of constraints and this video will make more sense. I was trying to stay away from introducing constraints in the first few lessons as they can be quite difficult for beginners.
      Nonetheless, please don't hesitate to comment questions on the tutorials as you work through the remainder of the series. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Thanks for the quick reply on the last one, I got a weird hiccup when filleting still, had to do the fillets separately and .01 less than their opposite. I got antiparallel error, and told me that the constraint to keep the line vertical was disabled when I enacted to fillet, but still showed it active. But when I went to sweep it basically told me that some of the path wasn't meeting up correctly for the sweep to follow.

    I received the following..."Error: The start direction of a path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment.
    " Vertical contraints just created more errors.
    I was able to work around this by using the circle tangent to two lines instead of fillet. Worked great after that.

    Hi Kevin, Your videos are great, thank you. I ran into an error on the SWEEP command: "Error: The start direction of a path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment." I probably I missed a step (or the most recent Fusion 360 is a bit different). I was able to avoid the constraint issue and get the fillets to work by following the advice on the pinned comment to go one-by-one. But to fix the SWEEP issue, I created the ARCs using the CENTER-POINT-ARC command instead to create the curved parts of the paper clip. This had the added advantage that I ended up with a fully constrained SKETCH. To do this, I used construction lines to create the initial rectangular frame of the paperclip. I then created construction lines (down or up, as the case may be) from the horizontal parts using the dimensions of fillets (3.75,3.25, and 2.75). From these points I then created a horizontal line across the paperclip at these points. This gave me a mid-point of a line to use as the center point of the CENTER-POINT-ARC. This avoids the constraint issues and the error I got above. Here is a link to my version: a360.co/37I1p98.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Luke. That error is usually caused by the sketch fillets throwing the lines out of whack. Try reverting the sketch and apply the corner sketch fillets one at a time. You may then have to drag the sweep command around the profile, as it doesn't always connect all of the lines with fillets on each corner.
      This should fix it - let me know if it doesn't. Cheers, Kevin :)

      @@ProductDesignOnline I had exactly the same issue, even with vertical constraints I got the anti-parallel issue. I then applied the fillets 1-by-1 and it worked. Annoyingly it would not sweep the whole path in a single go and I had to select each segment, but otherwise it worked. It's probably a versioning issue that causes the problem to only occur for some people - newer versions of Fusion 360 probably perform the calculations differently such that the truncation error from using floating point arithmetic results in the arcs crossing, causing it to go out of whack. Doing each fillet one at a time clearly changes the calculation preventing this from occuring (e.g. F360 probably works out it it needs to reduce the fillet radius by epsilon).

I think it happened when i used the fillet command separately for each corner. I've googled a ton and cant figure out how to join the segments... the points are definitely coinciding ... tried all type of constraints but nothing works. Exactly the same issue i had. I drew the sketch and before applying the fillets i tried to sweep a profile around the path, it worked fine. Soon as you fillet the corners the path is segmented and has to be selected in several parts to define it as the path. I should of gone back and tried smaller fillets and seen what effect that had on the path.

    Addressing the antiparallel error that some people seem to be getting - this happens due to the connection points of the filleting to the other sketched lines. At these connection points, such as the intersection between filetts, if you zoom in close enough, you will notice the lines making miniscule zigzag or overlapping of lines. This creates the error. I fixed this by trimming the zigzagged portion(creating a gap) and using the coincident sketch tool to reconnect the lines for a smooth connection, rather than a zigzag or overlapped connection. You can look over the whole sketch for any of these discrepancies. When the discrepancies have been trimmed, you can sweep over the sketch section by section to complete the paperclip.

    • @robertdubard7959
      @robertdubard7959 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That works. It just doesn't reflect design intent. A better approach is to NOT use straight lines and not use sketch fillets! There is a way to make the line tool do tangent arcs. By using that, you get desirable constraints automatically, and you simply have to add a few points to dimension. th-cam.com/video/lxK3LR4wd2g/w-d-xo.html
      That said, Kevin's videos are generally excellent, and my production sucks. But maybe you will find the approach a bit simpler.

If I just enter the number in the filet options it turns out fine, but once i hit enter, it goes crazy. Thank you!

      Thanks for the images, Zachary. Looking at the image it appears that the left line is fully constrained already, as it's a black colored line. Can you share your public link as a reply to this thread? I'll take a look and see what constraint is causing this. Cheers, Kevin :)

    I had the UI preview ticked which was recommended by Brad Tallis. However with this clicked there was no model tab as in your lessons. The version you are using appears more intuitive or am I missing something?

      Hi, Peter. I decided a while back that I'll keep my tutorials in the current version of Fusion 360, without using any of the preview functionality. The UI Preview has been available for approximately 8 months, and from my own experimentation with it, I've seen them move stuff around and change things quite frequently. I'm assuming the Autodesk folks have been pushing the UI preview so they can have a large enough sample set of users to gain valid feedback. I personally think the "tab" design still needs a lot of work. In some areas I'd agree with you that they're trying to simplify it too much, and have taken away some of the intuitiveness. Thus, I'm staying away from the UI preview until it's officially pushed out in a future version (when we don't have a choice). Cheers, Kevin :)

      Thankou Kevin, I unticked the box and it made life so much easier with your lessons. By the way clicking two lines and hitting fillet radius zero makes doing you paper clip much easier.

    The start direction of a path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment. is the error I get when I try to use the sweep command or the paper clip. I use undo at the top left because I dont know of any other way to edit out bad input on my part. Suggestions? how do you removelike spline points also thanks.

      Hi, mbnaso. Please try to apply the fillets one at a time - that should fix the issue that is causing the error message.

    Thanks for all the tutorials you have done and shared, Im learning alot from these, do you have new tutorials for the 2020version of fusion 360, I tried the one where you showed you can revert back to the version you have on this video but that option is not there, it must be a newer version than shown here, On my version it shows the Design button instead of the Model button version. I have done your stand and handle tutorial which uses the Design button sett-up. Looking at your web site Thanks again. I was going to subscribe to the training for wood tutorials but not sure which version you use.

      Hi, Wayne. I always record my tutorials with the latest version. If you go to my YT channel homepage you can sort the videos by latest - th-cam.com/users/productdesignonline
      There are handful of beginner projects that reflect the latest UI.
      The woodworking course that I just released is also being recorded with the latest UI (which you can see in the preview video) - bit.ly/woodworkingCourse

    I've resolved Sweep problems by making fillet radius slightly smaller than half of lines' lengths (short lines to which fillets are being applied)

    I started drawing in the xz plane rather than the xy plane and near the end was unable to draw a circle in the xy plane to do the sweep. It would only draw the circle in the xz plane, making the circle tangent to the line rather than perpendicular to it. It appears that it matters which plane you start in. If this is a critical step at the beginning, you need to warn the student that this step is crucial to success. If there is a work around, can you please provide it? Thanks!

    I'm working along pretty good and I notice stray points on my screen. Well, those artifacts must die...but most of them won't delete. Ok, weird. Then I noticed them on yours, too. When I tried to 'sweep' it said "Cannot sweep the profile along the selected path because the path geometry may contain segments that are too sharp sweep along. Adjust the sweep distance until a valid preview appears..."
    Was 1, then 0.5, 2, 6...what the heck is the distance and which way should adjustments be incremented?
    Did I poison it?

    I thought I would try this drawing to give you some feedback. I noticed that as I was laying out the lines, once I hit the green checkmark circle. This ended my line, and starting a new one at that end point seemed to create problems when trying to sweep. Also, sometimes as I was laying the lines out, it automatically exited the line function. I am not sure what exactly is happening.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, jench78. Sorry, I must've missed your comment. Thanks for your feedback!!
      Creating a new line at the end point of another line shouldn't affect its "sweep" ability. It's likely that the fillet radius was throwing off the endpoints in some manner.
      As far as automatically exiting the line function... where you hitting any other hotkeys? Any time you click another keyboard key (if it has a hotkey assigned) it will automatically boot you from the line command. Just something to be cautious about as you work. Cheers, Kevin :)

    When doing the center circle, it is not giving me the option for which axis/face to draw it on; therefore, I can't make it on the right axis for the sweep tool to work. How can I change the axis I can draw the circle on? Thanks!

    I've never used sketching before; just simple programs where you draw the 3D Box directly. I can see why sketching really comes in handy but just to confirm; when it comes to a basic shape like a rectangle, sketching and extruding is creating the same thing as the Create a Solid Box option right? Or is there something else different about it?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Jesse. Great question. That is correct - they're essentially the same exact thing. In fact, the benefit to using the Box command over sketching a rectangle and extruding it is that you can edit all three dimensions within the one feature (if you need to change dimensions later).
      With that said, the 2D sketches are great for shapes that cannot be created with the basic 3D shapes. There will be multiple ways to achieve the same object with any CAD package. The goal is often how to create it in the least amount of steps, while still maintaining feasibility to update or change things if needed. Cheers, Kevin :)

      Hi Rud Dog, when you're in the drawing workspace you can go to File > Print to easily print directly from Fusion 360. Alternatively, you can output as PDF, which is located in the toolbar, and then print from the downloaded PDF. The benefit of printing directly from Fusion 360 is that you can print multiple "selected sheets" that you have open/active. Cheers, Kevin :)

    HI Kevin, I have an issue after completing the sweep my model appears hollow unlike yours which seems to appear as a solid. Ive tried to stich the model together as i needed to do the same after doing the rotate on the bottle. Unfortunately its not working for this one. Any tips would be helpful. Thanks
