Watching this car win live at Le Mans as a teenager, I just didn’t appreciate how special it really was. The sound it made as it passed us each lap was the talking point of our group... truly amazing sound.
Wankel power resonates and dominates the Le Mans circuit in the 1990s and even over 25 years later the 787B still sends chills down the spine of many people who was there to see and hear the rotary legend scream to victory
It wasn't banned BEFORE though .. and it never won a thing across multiple seasons. Needed a weight penalty advantage to win Le Mans in '91 .. the ACO underestimated the balance of performance and robbed Jaguar of a 1,2,3.
You definitely cannot miss the Mazda, not only thanks to its sound, but also thanks to its bright orange. When I was watching them start, all I could think of was: “generic race car color, generic race car color, generic race car color, OH SNAP THE MAZDA, generic race car color, generic race car color.....”
@@rodneyneeson1335You'd assume that it could have run at full potential in the sprint races that year but it's results were appalling in all other races so it further shows the weight penalty applied to the other C2 cars at Le Mans was the only reason for it's success.
Thanks so much for sharing such precious raw footage of a motoring. Icon. it's great that you wee actually there to see it. what's it like at night time can you sleep?
I find it interesting how the iconic 787B sounds a bit different from the white and blue 787’s? Or is it just me? I would love to hear others opinions because I’m unsure.

In a 24 hour race it's not about being the fastest. It's about outlasting the field.
The Mazda 787B outlasted the field.
And could have done it for 24hours more if not longer ;)
And it did it like a screaming banshee ; )
And did it so well it's engine TYPE got straight up BANNED lol... xD
The other cars: Vruuum vruuuum vruum
Meanwhile, on the main straight: *SKRUIIIIIIIII SKRUIIIIIIIII SKRUIIIIIIIIIIIII brap brap*

The car only won one race ever though🐼

As a teenage boy there in 89,90 & 91 I didn’t not appreciate Group C and this car enough at the time. The crowd did gasp when it went past though...
Every time it passes by, it sounds like a devil screaming or an angel singing :D
It's a Demon and Angel singing Karaoke. Beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Such a sound that'll never be reproduced and I'm saddened by it.

I know right? It's a shame that the Furai failed to replace this beast.
What a glorious sound from the 787b!
I love having multiple classes in sports car racing, but these all-prototype Le Mans were just magical.
Usually beautiful music gives me goosebumps. This time it was that Rotary powered 787B 😍
Thanks for uploading such a valuable video of 787B.
This is excellent uncovered footage.
4:33 A very young Michael Schumacher appears!
great footage!!
The motor just chilling on a pallet :)
Juste une Masterpiece cette vidéo R26B one day in my garage
Alot of folk say the mazda wasn't even close to being the fastest car there....but it sure looked and sounded like it
It wasn't it was detuned by 200 HP and run on fuel numbers for each stint . Wonder what it could have done if let loose?

Had one of the most awesome sounds in a race car
Quel panard !!!!
C'est orgasmique, j'aime toujours Le Mans aujourd'hui, mais les éditions 80/90's ont une tout autre saveur ;
This is an absolute gem.. The sound is surprisingly good, enough to give me goosebumps every time I hear the R26B!

Two 787s were B spec and the third was 1990 spec.
