@@bionicle2122 Raycevick's breakdown of 007 Nightfire was incredible. When I saw that I knew, "This guy knows exactly what he's talking about." I recorded over 9+ hours of Raycevick for this documentary as we talked about the Battlefield series lol
Did you notice that the grenade launcher in vietnam had the tiger camo on it similar to the one the guy in the trench was using in apocalypse now. that's actually a crazy detail
You're absolutely right. To the guy who thinks it's too long just watch it in 4 - 5 parts to get through it or skip the entries you're not interested in. It's the necessary length to cover everything simple as that. That's why it's a massive undertaking.
Man seeing classic Battlefield games being talked about in one entire documentary is just phenomenal. Thanks a lot Nick930. Can't wait to see what you do next.
This documentary is a monumental achievement in comprehensively covering a major game series. It covers all the details without getting boring, and remains perfectly objective while exploring different player viewpoints. This is the best of its kind on all of TH-cam.
One thing that doesn't get nearly enough credit on BF1 is it's soundtrack. It completely changes the game. It makes it more emotional, more immersive and give the game the sense of gravity and respect that any portrait of WW1 should have. Truly amazing soundtrack, maybe the best ever in a game.
Audio design was one of the most overlooked aspects of this entire review / documentary tbh. I didn’t hear it really get acknowledged all that much. And it’s not just BF1 which shines in the audio department. But it is a standout. I think the roar of the jets in BF3 and BF4 has been lost in BF2042. They no longer generate that powerful sound like they used to. It’s one of the several things that makes 2042 feel like a shell of a BF game to me. The taming of the destruction system is another reason.
Thank you for this video. For me, Battlefield is one of the most important and influential game series in my live. There is nothing out there like it. Nice to see this awesome tribute with people who care so much for the games. Thank you so much, really :)
Interesting how you watch a 4,5 hour video that came out 3 hours ago and you reply was an hour ago :D But nonetheless, Nick's videos are always great and in-depth
I just realized reading this thread this video is 4.5hrs long and I'm at 1.5. It's Already midnight but I can't stop watching now I'm hooked and I know I'm not sleeping til it's over
1:34:26 "If someone was sniping from a house, you just "delete" the house" - Flakfire on Bad Company (2008) 😂 As someone who’s first Battlefield experiences were with Hardline and 4 and most hours being in Battlefield 1 and V, I really loved this documentary’s coverage of the history of the older games in the franchise that I never got to play. It really helps me put things into perspective and understand how the game has become what it is today. I really understand now why Battlefield 2, Bad Company 1/2 and Battlefield 3 are so revered, the first of which seemingly creating the experience and adding the features that essentially made Battlefield what it is currently. I also now know where the game mode and name "Rush" came from! Thank you Nick and all of those who contributed to this documentary, it was amazing to watch in its entirety and I have been waiting on it ever since it’s trailer was announced. Well done, all of you guys!
that's definitely one of my favorite quotes from the video. That and "What's that one map.. the one with the flood.. it like.. flooded a lot..." "....Flood Zone?"
This was absolutely immaculate. The amount of effort that must’ve went into making this is astounding. It was both informative as well as nostalgic for those who have played a lot of the older titles. I’m sure more than a few had a sense of overwhelming joy and sadness at times past with all the memories and friends we’ve made playing these groundbreaking games for dozens if not hundreds of hours over the years. Thank you so much for this, Nick. It truly is impressive and I bet even the people at DICE who watch this will be extremely proud of all they’ve accomplished over the years.
*_As a Battlefield Franchise veteran (Played since BF1942). I appreciate this documentary. Truly. I feel like it is an homage to vet players like me. Thank you for making my day._*
I played 1942 I was just about 8 years old, I played during 2142 as well and battlefield 2. Basically been there nearly since the start… sad to see what has happened to bf tho
@@Glizzy_Waterwhy are you the only one taking an issue with the terminology? DICE calls long time players “Franchise Veterans” since like Bad Company 2 or BF3. You need to catch up mr.StoLeN VaLoR
Battlefield 2 Veteran here, thank you for your hard work. I enjoyed every second of it. Pretty much played every Battlefield from 2 and beyond. Crazy..
The new DICE team seriously needs to watch this documentary to see what made Battlefield a Battlefield game. 2042 is a shambles and is missing so many features.
The personnel at dice are extremely left wing nowadays. They love turning their nose up at the "little people" that buy their games and preach to them to not buy their game. They also think that gamers are little kids that need to be coddled and games should be a "safe space" with no scoreboards. Apparently the world will be ravaged by climate tornadoes in a mere 21 years. Apparently our player avatars can't be interesting and humorous characters and instead we need representation including an old woman that wouldn't last 10 seconds on a battlefield. Unless the old devs come back, battlefield has no chance to be good and is just name recognition at this point.
This video is incredible. I'm a battlefield vet since 1942. I'm very happy you included all the mod supports and even the forgotten games. 2142 was my favorite Battlefield game, and I will gladly die on this hill. As imbalanced wacky c4 jumping as it was, it remains my favorite.
I’ve watched all your docs and this is undoubtedly your masterpiece. By the end I totally understand why this series has such a loyal fanbase, through the good and bad. Real talk you deserve an industry award for this. Your docs are incredibly informative yet never boring; they’re fun but never juvenile. You are so earnest with your work and I really appreciate it. I get more enjoyment out of your docs than most Marvel movies. Thank You so much for your dedication.
1:39:21 "Nick u need t leav" I really gotta apreciate how above and beyond you went in capturing footage for this incredible documentary, moments like that just really add to the entire presentation for me even if the gameplay is just "background" to the documentary itself.
@@Nick930 I kid you not I was in the process of making a video on all the forgotten features of Battlefield 2, but you hit the nail on the head. If the Frostbite engine had mod support like Refactor we would've had Battlefield Portal a long time ago.
I'm with Battlefield since 1942. Battlefield is still the best Franchise for me. No matter how 2042 is doing right now. I'm to old for gaming now anyways but I will always be grateful for the gaming time I had with this franchise and their Battlefields. So many good memories. Thank you so much for putting this documentary together. So much hard work but it's a masterpiece.
Can we all just take more than a few seconds to appreciate the massive amount of effort this man has put in to deliver such an outstanding documentary on the entire history of Battlefield. Not to mention, damn he is really good at the games too. The man was topping off in the scoreboards, shooting really well, and handled vehicles expertly. Now that's outstanding.
@@SwungCookie Ahhh that's about it? So you're telling me you're going to leave out the parts where you'll have to edit and compile footage, edit them, etc etc? Gotcha gotcha. I mean you do you buddy. Things are easier said than done. I understand
I love the "Thank all of you for watching today" at the end like this video didn't take me 5 days to watch. But for real, you're a legend, Nick. I watch all of your videos and love each of them. You're my go-to reviewer for the best, unbiased viewpoints on any game from the last few years and you really know your stuff. Keep up the fantastic work!
Absolutely best-in-class documentary. Been watching this in chunks on my lunch breaks. Though I’m not a seasoned vet of the franchise, it has inspired to play some of these recently. I don’t generally gravitate towards multiplayer games in general but BF has been the one I’ve enjoyed the most. Your amazing work on this video is greatly appreciated.
I'm not even halfway through and I'm in awe at the sheer amount of detail you managed to pack into every second of this. From the research to the musical score and the pacing itself. I'm trying to imagine myself in your shoes tackling a project like this and I don't even know how I'd start, 10/10 man
This Documentary, all the effort that went into making, is the single greatest example of the amazing people that are the Battlefield veteran community.
This is such an amazing documentary. All of the current employees at DICE should have to watch this in its entirety so they can be reminded of exactly what made the Battlefield games so great since they seem to have forgotten.
Especially the level design team. Those guys really lost their way. What was the goal ?. It was not being pretty, it was not creating interesting spaces for gameplay, it was not making logical maps that fit together in a way that made sense, so what was the goal ? . They really needed to hire a couple of architects or planners to tell them how spaces go together
Just about every dice employee has quit to make another studio called embark studios due to EA robbing them of creative freedom by forcing them to go woke in BF5 and then reduced their salaries and robbed them of bonuses when the game sold poorly Now these ex-dice Devs are working on a new true next gen game called arc raiders
@@damn6039 I mean.. I don't think the new studio is not going to go woke. Since one of the leaders of that studio is the guy that supported the going of wokeness. But I at least hope it won't be as bad as the fiasco of bf5

Great work dude. Cant imagine the work you put in there. Real good job. Deserves way more view and likes. Im going to share it where I can DAM DAM DA DA DAM DAM DA DA DAM Dam DAAAAAM BTW: BFBC2 and BF3 will always have a special heart in my Gamerlife. They were the peak of online shooter to me. Perfect balance, perfect mechanics, perfect design. After BF3 DICE unfortunatly took the way that brought us 2042 now.
This video is extremely informative, the entire 4 hours captivated me, as I am a big fan of this entire franchise. I started playing Battlefield with 1942 playing on my grandfathers old computer around when Battlefield 3 had came out, and I remember seeing the trailers and such for that game and thinking how awesome it would be to fly a Super Hornet instead of a Spitfire, which at the time I was also watching Battlefield Friends and watching Levelcaps loadout series, I have played pretty much every Battlefield game to some extent with few exceptions, and now that I am playing Battlefield 2042, I once again wonder which direction the series will take next, I hope it is another unique but nostalgic experience.
Incredible collab. I'm very thankful you have re-ignited all of my cherished Battlefield memories. Makes me think of all the incredible work that has gone into Battlefield over the years. An instant favorite video for me. Thank you!
I remember seeing a demo of Battlefield 1942 at Best Buy. I picked up the game, went home and installed it and was disappointed that I didn’t have a compatible graphics card. Hopped back in the car, spent $149 on a new graphics card and the rest is history ☺️
I'm 1/3rd into the video, and I have to say this... THAT is called content! The amount of work and passion behind the documentary is just incredible... As a die hard BF fan, thank You so much!
The systems and what they packed into that game was astonishing. While BF3 was a graphic achievement and huge step forward, BF2 had ALL the options you could ever want -- and it ran flawlessly.
Right? Huge missed opportunity not making "BFV" a vietnam game. Just... urgh.. still irks me to this day. I don't even really hate BFV. But a full fledged BFVietnam game would've been so much cooler
Outstanding documentary! I must admit , I started playing since BF 1942, but the one that really got me lovimg Battlefield was Modern Combat for the Xbox. I played until the servers were no longer supported, and thus, was part of a small tight-knit community that played nearly daily. On the last day of play, all the regulars and veterans msgd each other thanking each other for years of fun and great experiences. There was something about Modern Combat that made the fights so engaging and immersive, (once you really knew what you were doing, everyone had great teamwork). I've never seen such consistent amount of cooperation, synergy, and collaboration in gaming, and I've played alot of games that focused on teamwork and communication. It was very competitive. Right now I'm still playing Battlefield 4. While it rivals the experience I had in Modern Combat all those years ago, the level of teamwork and community is nowhere near the same. Maybe if I joined a clan, I'd be singing a different tune. But with Modern Combat, players had clan-level teamwork down without the need of being in a dedicated clan. At least in the final days of it. Like this comment if you agree! I'm curious how many felt the same.
Just want to say thank you for making this man. The last few weeks have really sucked for me health-wise, and watching this video helped my take everything off my mind when I probably needed it the most. Love all your other documentaries too and I'm looking forward to the next one!!
this was great, watched in one sitting. always love seeing your neutral documentaries on the histories of game franchises without any unnecessary banter towards personal negatives or positives of a game, very educational. im a big fan of levelcap and raycevick and love battlefield friends so it was great seeing them here also.
Not only is BF2 the best BF game that I’ve ever played, it’s the best online game that I’ve ever experienced. Easily put in over 3000 hrs in it until EA killed its official servers. Hands the down the best BF game, the king of the series.
2005 was such a cool year. BF2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory versus mode dominated my online gaming time. Absolutely loved both of those experiences to death.
As an avid Battlefield fan I've been waiting forever for this video and it was absolutely worth the wait. Your attention to detail and research is second to none. Outstanding video!

It's finally here this is my most anticipated TH-cam Video of all time, ever since Nick announced it awhile back. I love this franchise and the quality of Nick's work!! I just hit play, but I know it's going to be 🔥
This is your best video yet, IMO. Love the Battlefield series and this was such a great trip down memory lane. I remember being blown away by 1942. I built a new system for Battlefield 2 in the summer of 2005. Hundreds of hours in BC2. It just goes on and on and you captured each game and the story around it well. Thank you!
Hardline at the end with all of the content and beautiful DLC maps was truly fantastic. Some really great map design and community dedication. RIP Visceral.
My friend who lived on my street had BF2 on PC, I loved it. I only had a Playstation 2 so I got BF2 Modern Combat and put so many hours in, got a headset and joined my first clan hooking it up with an Ethernet Cable. I still talk so some of them gamers over 15 years later and went from PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5 and PC. Gaming community, I love you, it’s us, who make these games what they actually become. Moments and memories.
It’s been agessss since I’ve played modern combat. I remember the first mission where you parachuted in. Back then I never got passed that level. That level by itself gave me all the enjoyment.
Damn dude!! I put this on to have background noise while I worked. 4 hours later, guess what, no work has been done. The last thing I expected was this kind of quality. All I want to do now is relive all the BF experiences of years gone by. Thank you.
You have really inspired to everyone throughout the Battlefield community. Battlefield will always live forever on. Your documentary really emotioned to all of them. Thank you for the amazing journey. 20 years of #Battlefield.
Thank you for this. I have dreamed of this day. The amount of effort you put in to this goes beyond dedication this is on another level. I hope you know everyone is so grateful for what you have done and the effort put into this. This brings back so many good memories. You know what I’m subscribing immediately because this is amazing.
It felt like there was a total conversion for anything you could ever want in 1942. Even to this day, i've never seen a game with a modding community that was so varied and thorough. You could look up a list of dozens of mods, download a few GB file, drop it into the mods folder, and essentially have a brand new game to play.
Finally, I’ve been following your journey trying to process this video @ 4K 60 on twitter and it’s almost surreal to be finally watching. Wishing you the best for the new year!
I have binge watched every single history of that you have done. I have to say that as a huge Battlefield veteran of 19 years ever since 1942 thank you for the best 4 hours of a TH-cam video I have ever watched. I only started playing Battlefield in 2011, when Battlefield 3 was released. I remember buying new pc to fully enjoy this game. I can't stress enough how much of a surprise it was for a gamer to see this masterpiece of gameplay and visuals combined... ohh the countless hours of joy. I shed a tear when you started talking about this game. Its been 10 years, 2022 will be here in less than 24 hours for me so 11 years since that game... The moment i saw BF3 maps and i heard their names again... Im crying when im writing this... Thank you for your work. After BF3 i came back to Battlefield One with the same idea of buying new PC for it. Damn that game was breathtaking. I am soo happy i could have played those games on release dates and enjoy each added content to them. All the titles you showed up with a history about the games were interesting too. Watching the hole thing for sure. [ im at 2h45min atm: EDIT: watched all ] PS. I liked suppression mechanics in BF3 and rush in BF3 was incredible. PS2. I was hoping that battlefield one will be bigger and we will recive never ending updates with more maps, grand operations and other things... gameplay + visuals were 10/10. I am not planning on going back to battlefield again. I feel like BF1 was perfection.
Your documentary here kind of gave me a little bit of hope for 2042. I really want that game to succeed and see it pull through. I want to see this franchise carry on forever. Really nice work, I’ve never seen a docu series like this on such a monumental franchise in the video game industry.
That took a lot of extra effort to pull off too in regards to obtaining permission to use. Glad I was able to include it as I loved putting that section together :)
@@Nick930 Thank you for all that effort, your passion really shows for that series. Sadly I think the golden era for Battlefield is behind us, and the devs lost their passion to top the past Battlefield games.
@@avatar94100 There's never a real end to a game franchise. Call of Duty was considered beyond saving only a few years ago. But CODMW2019 totally transformed public opinion and the series has never been more popular, even if Cold War and Vanguard weren't nearly as strong. Tony Hawk Pro Skater was beyond saving.. but Tony Hawk 1+2 sold more than any other game in the franchise! (And it better get a sequel.. because I freakin loved it) And now Splinter Cell.. a game long thought to be totally dead.. is FINALLY getting a remake after all these years. Maybe it will bring THAT series back from the dead? Battlefield can always make a comeback as it has done MANY times already. Bad Company 1 when it released seemed like the end of the "Golden Era" for battlefield before... then we got Battlefield 3 (and BadCo2) soon after.
@@avatar94100 2042 has the core foundations for a game that can be redeemed and also improved, I got a feeling there’s a chance. Not necessarily a big chance, but we have a chance.

Waow... just waow... the amount of work and effort here. It's a 4 hours+ video that seemed like an hour long. It was so good and well edited. The commentaries are a great addition to the documentary. 10/10 Nick, and I've never given a perfect score to anything before. Cheers mate ! Thank you for this. 👍
Battlefield 2 came out at a time where I was too young to be allowed to play shooters. I remember downloading the demo copy of the game that I would be able to sneakily play without my parents ever knowing. I probably played that demo, with its one and only map being Gulf of Oman, for 4 years. 4 years my only experience with first person shooters was that demo (and some of the old Star Wars shooters). It was an amazing time, gaming was so novel to me back then. Good memories and I am glad to say I have been with this series ever since. Even with some low points for the series as of recently.
What's such a bloody shame is that players for YEARS have asked for 128 player servers. All the way back from Battlefield 2. Experiments were done with Forgotten hope, Project Reality, AIX mods etc. with 100 - 150 player servers. Even Venice unleashed and Project Rome experimented with this (there were also hacked servers in Battlefield 3's beta with 128 players and it was fucking glorious). Then when we finally got it in Battlefield 2042, it was so poorly implemented with the bad map design with wide-open spaces lacking cover, that people prefer 64 players (and still hate the map design). That's also ignoring the plethora of other issues with 2042. It was supposed to be building on top of what made all the other Battlefield games great, the class structure and balance, the destruction, the movement mechanics, the vehicle customization and gameplay, the commanders, the buildable structures, the variety of weapons and depth of customization.... all became a part of the formula. More than half of those things don't even exist anymore. Not even a fucking spectator mode! Not even a damn score board to see who's doing well or who's doing TOO well and potentially hacking (there is a vibrant hacking community in 2042 as well... but you wouldn't know!) Also some of the design choices in Battlefield Vietnam made it over to Rising Storm 2 Vietnam with the tunnels as spawn points. It's amazing to see how far the influence for these titles reach
Bad map design is a serious understatement. Bad textures, flat models, limited destruction, empty spaces, ugly and pointless spaces, lack of objects, flat 2D design, no interesting connections, no lanes, etc
Amazing Documentary! I started playing Battlefield back in the Desert Combat mod for BF 1942, and has been playing ever since, following ups and downs in the franchise. I loved to see and hear the history of games from my youth, things I had even forgotten and didn't know about the developers. Thank you for this video, the crazy amount of work and time put into it. I really hope it kicks off and get WAY more views. And what a wholesome ending with all the people sharing their great moments of the games.

This documentary is a monumental achievement in comprehensively covering a major game series. It covers all the details without getting boring, and remains perfectly objective while exploring different player viewpoints. This is the best of its kind on all of TH-cam.
Indeed!
True that!
Not just the soundtrack, the sound design im general. Those screams and war cries in BF1, man. Absolutely haunting
The best bf game ever
@@pedroholsbach8592 the whistle!!!

As someone who’s first Battlefield experiences were with Hardline and 4 and most hours being in Battlefield 1 and V, I really loved this documentary’s coverage of the history of the older games in the franchise that I never got to play.
That and

The new DICE team seriously needs to watch this documentary to see what made Battlefield a Battlefield game. 2042 is a shambles and is missing so many features.
If it ain't Bad Company 3 I ain't interested. BF3 and BF4 were awesome but we need Bad Company 3.
But nobody can agree on what' makes Battlefield Battlefield lol.

This is such an amazing documentary. All of the current employees at DICE should have to watch this in its entirety so they can be reminded of exactly what made the Battlefield games so great since they seem to have forgotten.
i think like 90% of the old devs left DICE
Especially the level design team. Those guys really lost their way.
What was the goal ?. It was not being pretty, it was not creating interesting spaces for gameplay, it was not making logical maps that fit together in a way that made sense, so what was the goal ?
.
They really needed to hire a couple of architects or planners to tell them how spaces go together
More importantly the execs and PowerPoint managers to get a sense of responsibility they have to their customers
Just about every dice employee has quit to make another studio called embark studios due to EA robbing them of creative freedom by forcing them to go woke in BF5 and then reduced their salaries and robbed them of bonuses when the game sold poorly

(And it better get a sequel.. because I freakin loved it)

The intro alone is what makes Battlefield stand's out!
YES! Exact same for me. BF2 demo was amazing and I still find Gulf the best map ever.
Nice. I was only 2 years old at that time. Lmao. You guys got the good games. I'm stuck with TrashField 2042
Not even a damn score board to see who's doing well or who's doing TOO well and potentially hacking (there is a vibrant hacking community in 2042 as well... but you wouldn't know!)
Also some of the design choices in Battlefield Vietnam made it over to Rising Storm 2 Vietnam with the tunnels as spawn points. It's amazing to see how far the influence for these titles reach
Bad map design is a serious understatement.
Bad textures, flat models, limited destruction, empty spaces, ugly and pointless spaces, lack of objects, flat 2D design, no interesting connections, no lanes, etc
BF1942 had 128 servers, it only had to have a server side tweak for it and it worked pretty well
Amazing Documentary!
