      People can't handle gas at $5.49/ gallon now imagine people filling up a "flying car" if we ever have them. Highly doubt it since it would interfere with other flying planes and helicopters.

    Don’t get too worried. Planes have special features when things get too close. It's called the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). TCAS alerts pilots if other aircraft are too close and provides instructions, like telling one plane to climb (pull up) and the other to descend (pull down), to avoid a collision.

    If it's someone from atc that are probably overworked and understaffed because that's such a common reason for when the atc fucks up. The job is so hard because you have to work with 60-70 plane depatures per hour that's according to what someone said on a form and the shift is about 9 or 10 hours. This makes sense because there's more than 45,000 flights per day it really varies.

Seems to me like the only reason this is news at all is because the video happened to get a lucky angle and the news wanted something to be alarmist about.

    If they crossed altitudes what does the vertical separation even mean?

    • @400_billion_suns
      @400_billion_suns 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Right? I can only assume it means they were directly above/below each other (zero horizontal separation) and that was the minimum distance keeping them from colliding at that point in time

      @@400_billion_suns I thought they both crossed the same altitude at a similar point of time but I must be mistaken. But I appreciate the actual definition of vertical separation lol

    Tower cleared a c17 over my da40 at 1000 on a crossing runway overhead approach while I would have been landing underneath. No violation but the controller took the next day off realizing I’d be dead from the wake if I didn’t break off. C17 was going over 250 knots due to the tailwind. Wind was blowing the wake right at me from around 3 o clock. And I passed 500 hours during that flight. Left the ‘killing zone’ after I landed. Airline pilots (AA or delta mocked me). Tower supervisor completely agreed with me, it was scarier watching the replay.

    So many failures are never reported. You don't hear about 99.9% of the problems.

    Back in the midseventies when I was a kid I was on a non-stop flight from Miami to Los Angeles and about an hour into the flight I happened to glance out my window and almost directly below us about 500 ft down I saw another passenger jet fly right underneath us going the opposite direction. Never thought much of it until I was much ilder and learned that should never have happened and lucky we didn't have a mid air collision. Crazy how close we can come to death and have no idea just how close we came...

    Why has AI technology not been implemented into commercial air flight control? I know they have TCAS and that is probably the only reason this didn’t turn deadly, but there has to be better technology available to avoid situations like this.

    Separated vertically? They are very visibly separated laterally and not vertically because a) they are not on the same flight path to require vertical or horizontal separation, b) they don't CRASH INTO EACH OTHER as they pass the same altitude and c) THEY PASS THE SAME ALTITUDE which meas they are not separated vertically because THEY ARE AT THE SAME ALTITUDE. Which is FINE because they have plenty of lateral separation.
    Seriously who writes these new scripts?? It's simply a matter of forced perspective from the direction the video was taken in relation to the planes. Do you need to be vertically separated from the car in the lane beside you on the highway? No, because you have lateral separation. If someone where to take a video directly from the side of the highway, it might appear as if you could hit each other when one car passes the other, when in reality there was no danger. It's fairly obvious from the video that one plane is further away than the other if you are paying attention.
    Also the audio provided doesn't make sense combined with the situation in the video. Betting they picked up any "confused" sounding aircraft radio transmissions they could find from that day (if they were even honest enough to get audio from that airfield ir that day) to pair with the "scary" video.
    In reality, even if there had been no lateral separation between the two planes, they both appear to be far enough out that the TCAS system would have issued first a traffic advisory and then if needed a resolution advisory based on their projected paths well before the two aircraft were actually near each other. Not a big deal. Someone is going to be doing a lot of paperwork but otherwise not a problem.
    And that's in some imaginary worst case scenario that was clearly NOT the case in this instance. This video is just blatant scare mongering clickbait.
