Ha, just got a pair of tan Chelsea's and have gotten numerous compliments. Stylist are like movie critics, I can appreciate their opinions, but I like what I like!
@@ServicePortalGuy I think it's more of a general guide, or basic rules. If you know what you are doing and you know the rules, you can break them if it works.
Chelsea boots are good looking boots but in 2020 we won't wear them any more, at least not so much. Because they are became very common, everybody are using them, and they are getting bored...
Thank you! I’m glad someone finally expressed how I feel about broguing. I get that in a true formal environment, broguing is considered more casual, however, most American workplaces and social gatherings have become so informal that broguing is now considered a more formal element that elevates most people’s wardrobes, instead of making them more casual. By the way, I love broguing, so I’m not arguing against it, I’m simply saying that it’s role has changed in recent years.
Always wanted a pair of weathered/'beat up' black combat (but not too much) boots. I'd wear them with chinos/dark jeans and the pant legs would be over them not tucked into the boot like younger guys may do. That leads me to my other issue. I'm 54 now and will I look too old to be wearing these generally speaking?
While I do get the point, that tan Chelsea boots will draw attention to the lower part of your body, isn't that exactly what white sneakers are doing? Anyway, I think that tan boots work extremely well with light denim, because of the fact that they are a lot more streamline with the whole outfit compared to dark boots
As one who owns quite a few boots/shoes with contrasting stitching...you are right, damnit! My eye also tells me broguing looks more formal despite it being a casual element. Well done as usual.
I love brogue and have them on my dress boots but finally, finally someone agrees with me. I don’t think they make boots look less formal. I don’t know where this refrain has come from. But so many people are repeating it online and echoing each other without thinking. It definitely makes shoes more formal.
Michael Ryan I get the urge to dislike you a lot. Yes, you are right! Sorry I wasn’t precise with my comment. 💁🏻♂️ And you don’t know where this refrain has come from? Actually you do, because you seem to know the history. Still less formal...
In black tie event brouging is a no-go, and too informal. I would also not wear brouges to a funeral, for example, cause it's to "flashy" for such event
Thanks for sharing your thinking process about lighter colours and brogueing Ashley. I have to say I agree that brogueing is actually a formal shoe with flair.
I don't get it... How is tan boots with dark pants too much of a pop, whereas white sneakers are an essential item? I don't like light brown footwear all that much, but that just seems contradictory. Especially since it's often matched with camel coat, which ties the whole look together.
bro half the time they just say things to say them it feels like. LIke light tan boots are to much of an eye soar and stick out to much in an outfit but white/lighter colored shoes arent? I honestly dont think they have an open mind to style actually. LIke they think style is something that is set in stone and their way or no way lol which is not the case what so ever. Style is very personal and can really tell a story. Just like they say Chelsea boots cant be worn by bigger people lmao totally worng in every way but since Ashley says thats right it HAS to be right!
Zielak2397 summer casual: contrasting colors (bright shoes with dark pants/jeans) is stylish. Fall and winter: monochromatic or less contrast is more appropriate... similar to business professional dress.
Alden shell cordovan cap toe, Redwing iron rangers, thorogood moctoes, Allen Edmonds for Chelsea boots . Also in my opinion contrasted stitching always looks good with boots unless it's a dress boot. Really no contrasted stitching is a dress boot/dress shoe rule . Contrasted stitching looks great casually, and you can simply tell by a quick glance that something like redwing heritage, or wolverine 1000 mile that it's high quality with contrasted stitching .
The reason why brogueing on boots make them look more formal is due the fact that boots are typically utilitarian and without adornment. So anything that enhances the boot above its true nature will make them look and feel dressed up. IMO.. Thanks!
I agree with your stance on broguing and that's why I don't like it so much. People in formal environment will frown upon it cause for them it's too casual, and people in casual environment will ask you why are you wearing formal shoes😅
Personally living in Canada 🇨🇦, ( Saskatoon) ... I like white muck-lucks, but they are only good in 20 or more below, so then a ten or twelve inch red wing is ok for warmer weather, I like the basic Wellington. They look nice with tight black pants. For a stylish flair.
Width, I suppose. Besides, the sole might be different - the dress ones would usually have a leather sole, whereas the casuals could have a more practical rubber one. Although those two pairs have both have leather soles, if I'm not wrong. Hardly a good choice for rain and snow though
Just watched 2018, 3 boot video. You said you didn't like cap toe for dress boots, and Chelsea boots were more spring-early fall but not winter because they were too delicate. Guess you changed your mind. But you're right brogue shoe details are more dressy
I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Liverpool Chelsea Boots in Walnut Burnishable I love them and i'm able to pair them with a lot of choices i think they look great and have gotten many compliments
I love my dress shoes, wingtips, loafers and rugged boots. I am still on the fence with Chelsea boots. They are dress shoes in a boot form. Do I really need them, because when I wear a boot it is casual and has a Vibram sole. The Chelsea's are very sleek....kind of look like a cowboy boot from the front and I do the the allure in them. Black jeans would be perfect with them...but I can also wear black loafers right?
Ugh I just bought Chelsea boots with a bit of a chunkier sole thinking I could wear them casually because so many people around me are wearing them casually and lighter colors. I got a darker brown pair so maybe it’ll be fine
Ive always wanted to wear Chelsea boots but my ankles are the same circumference as drinking straws. So they flop and clunk and are a mess. Are there any recommendations for ones with a slimmer ankle fit?
I have a question for you both. Should I take out the stitching in the side pockets on a suit jacket? And if I should, are the pocket flaps supposed to be tucked into the pocket or stay outside the pocket? I really want to know. I'm confused lol.
The brogue boot is a classic English boot, country-style; it is good to pair with chinos or dark denim jeans, is a super stylish boot and marks a difference with the rest of the boots. Chelsea boots, you never tried Crockett, and Jones Chestnut Burnished Calf are super stylish and are light brown. Check this and then tried to tell that it is not stylish.😉
I guess I don't understand the idea that shoes should never pop or be the focal point of an outfit. If the rest of the outfit is conservative and muted, why is it a big deal? I agree that wearing ripped jeans with chelsea boots is too much, but sheesh! Dark brown, black, and white seem to be the only shoe colors you all approve of.
Is their point of view, being stylish is more than what they said is how you feel and how you feel with your wardrobe, there are rules but can be broken, and to my understanding, they do know nothing about shoes (quality and style)
Ok so I just ordered Sperrys Gold Elite Waterproof Plain Toe Boot from Nordstrom. It has no reviews on the site and I couldn’t find videos about the boots. What do you think about them and do you think they are worth the price/good quality?
The best advice I can give is to understand the seasons and the color wheel. The higher up on the color wheel the closer you are towards colder seasons and the lower you get on the color wheel then more you lean towards hotter seasons. Second rule, for every pair of shoes. Match three bottoms and 5 shirts. Good luck and great video.
honestly bro ive been trying to find the same thing. Great advice as always guys... Just wanted to ask about cognac or dark tan? as opposed to the light tan or sand colour you so vehemently condemned! I'm a massive fan of Chelsea boots, have been for a minute; I have them in numerous colours, like grey & even navy blue suede but I must say dark brown suede or leather is my fav colour. I agree with what you say about Chelsea boots on the larger guy, that was me a year or so ago but I've since lost a sizeable chunk of unneeded weight plus I'm 6ft 3 in height so I kinda get away with the proportions now due to the weight loss & my height so clothes fit so much better now & I can confidently don the Chelsea boots without looking out of sorts; thankfully. lol.
I’m saying that Ashley tends to go with black and dark brown too much! You can rock other colors with no problem. I like your content but even brogues look good whether dress or with jeans, not just cap toe. As for Chelsea boots suede look good with in different colors even light colors whether you wear jeans, cords or chinos. It’s her preference but that’s her choice!
I'm not sure if i get this, but why Chelsea boots as a man? I did see some men with Chelsea boots, but it doesn't look good for me. Last year I found that one boot I'd go for at any time. I really love Doc Martens, the sole is comfy, your feet are always warm and they look fabulous with any outfit. You can buy these in different colors, such as cherry red (i own a pair of these), blue, green, black (always a good choice, bc they match with every outfit, I own a pair of these too) and other special editions. Nothing wrong with light colors either it’s just a country look and they gain personality with age which black and dark browns wont. Chelsea boots are ok until the elastic gore wears out, then they look like trash. I converted a couple of pair of mine into Stockman belt boots. Now they look really designer one of a kind. Only works on boots with quality Dragoon shiny leather.
When the elastic (gusset) goes in a Chelsea boot, take them to a shoe/boot repair shop - you can get the elastic gusset replaced, and they can also replace the ankle tag if that’s become worn as well as resole them - revives your favourite boots back to as new.
@@andrewjohnston9115 Shoe repair is a dying art and sometimes it is hard to find a good cobbler that knows his trade. I am lucky and have two in my small town.

Kenny Ong agreed. I don’t really follow the logic. If light colored shoes draw the eyes, then why are white sneakers a staple in a man’s wardrobe?
