@roger adams And the training back then was prehistoric compared to today. Yes FloJo would be 10.3 with todays information and 21.0 or less for the 200m.

@Mickey Smiths so back in 1988 they knew you could train average athletes to have 40" verticals? Maybe the Russians knew but Americans felt it was 90% genetic vs 40% genetic they know today. What about 9.82 Chinese sprinters? Is that top if the world genetic materials or is it consimate training with improved knowledge? Back in 88 they didn't know about nutrition as well as today and any lifting was body builder style, which won't really help speed and explosiveness. Why all the mid 4 second high school 40 yard runners today? In 88 they'd be happy for high 4s and the occasional mid or low 4. Back in 88 was they were putting an emphasis on development of a strong "core" ( abs, oblique and lower back )?, no they didn't. What's so baaddd about saying training is much better and so ims sports science? Shes gonna thump that wr and the 200 too. Then 10.6 100m will be more common along with 21.5 or better 200m. She'Carri was on the pace for big numbers but got herself distracted with negative attention.

@Lions Truth stop gassing up Flo Jo lol. You and I know that the 10.49 sec she ran was very wind aided which was well over a 2.0 mph tailwind because the clock malfuncted due to the heavy winds. If Elaine Thompson had a 1.5 mph tailwind at the Olympics she would have broken that flimsy record.

I would simply enjoy the moment and appreciate what it is. But to put that much pressure on a athlete to break a record is unreasonable. Records are broken by chance no athlete says I'm going to break the record they just know if they perform well it can happen. It also may not happen by the person the closest to breaking it. This is good for the sport no doubt but record or not it's been a great ride.

My only problem is your comparison, I know that's the title but hear me out. Is there a comparison between Flo Jo 10.54 s her 10.59. Understanding the argument of zero wind aide I'd be interested in how those races differed because I like others believe Flo Jo could've run faster and whenever her records are broken that'll simply help prove that point. It's hilarious how when Men run insanely fast there's no breakdown of the impossible just made possible. But with women it's just an entirely different treatment from what I've seen. Thanks for the vid.

One thing you overlooked looked was the way they came out of the blocks. Look at how much more smoother FloJo came out of the blocks that Elaine. FloJo's first 5 steps were smooth. Elaine kind of short chopped her 2nd and 3rd step and the 4th and 5th step looked choppy, as compared to FloJo making an almost full step on her 3rd step.
Then you have to look at how much more quicker FloJo got into her sprinting phase instead of staying in a drive phase for the first 40 meters. FloJo's drive phase only lasted about the first 20 to 25 meters...if that. Look how much longer it took Elaine to get into her sprinting phase.
After they come out of the blocks there is another white line that they cross. Look at where FloJo is in her phase compared to Elaine's phase when she crosses that white line. FloJo is almost at full speed right there.
It's like two swimmers diving in the pool at the same time, but one swimmer comes from underwater and starts swimming before the other person does.
    Questions:
    1. What were their reaction times? That's very important. In Dragracing it's called a "HoleShot".
    2. What were their MPH...Top Speed?

Awesome video. Very well done! Thanks. But here's the issue that I have. We don't know exactly what the wind was for Flo Jo but they said that it was legal. That should be enough! But Apparently, it's not enough for some people. I've been watching Elaine Thompson and others for years. And she has ran plenty of races with a legal wind at her back and guess what, she didn't break the freaking record!!! We act like she's never had a fair chance to do that. In the 100 or so races in her career, she's never had a 1.5 or 1.0 wind at her back. Well, I've seen plenty of her races and she has. She's just not as fast as Flo Jo yet. Why can't people just freaking accept that!
Now, I believe that Elaine has a real shot of breaking Flo Jo's record. And that would be awesome. But to me, Flo Jo's race will always be better. Here's why.
Everyone in the race has the same conditions. Period! So, if there's a legal wind at their backs, then they ALL have that same wind at their backs, right!? If there's a slight head wind that they're running into. Then they ALL have that same headwind, right!?
So, what I look at is how much faster is the winner than everyone else in her race.
Flo Jo was on another level from the rest of the world period. No one was even close to her. Elaine is still competing with others. Shelly Anne wasn't too far behind her. But no one in the world was close to Flo Jo, and they had the same wind as her. That is the difference!
So, can we please stop speculating about a wind that we don't know anything about or if drugs were involved, that we don't know anything about and just look at what was accomplished. Cause honestly, no one knows who's using illegal substances or not.
We have to remember, Flo Jo wasn't always that fast. She was getting beat when she first started out. She just worked her ass off to develope a technique that to this day has never been duplicated. Scientist were freaking studying her, that's how perfect they said her technique was. So, can we give the woman her due. Please. She got sick very young. And had a shorter career than most. And she died young. She has earned the top spot
So, I have my fingers crossed for Elaine. I'm a big fan of track and Field period. And I hope I am lucky enough to see one of the greatest records ever: broken in my lifetime. But I will not disrespect Flo Jo. Until her record is broken. She is and will always be the Queen. Period!!!

That's because Shelly-Ann is the third fastest woman of all time. Compare Flo-Jo's winning time of 10.49 and second-place finisher Evelyn Ashford's 10.83 (a 0.34 s difference) to ETH's 10.54 and SFP's 10.73 (a 0.19s difference). The competition is just that much higher nowadays which is what makes Flo-Jo's winning margin look so huge by comparison. Elaine Thompson-Herah with 10.54 s is just 0.06 s faster than Shelly who has a PB of 10.60, much better than Evelyn Ashford's (no disrespect, she was another of the greats).

We all hope Elaine thompson runs under 10.49 to erase flo jo records because we all know it's a fake record. I will not even talk about flo jo progression or her sadly ending but if we take in account that during the 10.49 race all the girls have run their pb in a QUARTER FINAL of the trials you just have to use your brain to see that something abnormal (like wind) help them to run such times...

No they did not run their personal bests, Diane Williams 10.88 PB 10.86 Gail Deevers 10.98 PB 10.77. And then in the third quarter final race the wind was read at 5.0ms and the then world record holder Evelyn Ashford ran a 10.91 when the record was 10.76. I would say Flo Jo at the least was capable of low 10.5s if that wind was not legal that day as most suspect.

Putting the "Wind" controversy aside, there are several factors not mentioned that needs more research. 1. Is the length of the athlete's stride. 2. Is vertical motion of the leg and contact foot to the track and how long and what part of foot made the contact by the athlete's. 3. Their arms motion in symmetry to the motion of the rest of the body. 4. Relaxation after reaching maximum speed and position of the head going through the aforementioned while in motion. IOW More technical data on the total mechanics of the sprinter's. Moreover; The technologically enhanced advancements from 1988 to 2021, that increase speed endurance and overall performances. Such as; comparisons of cinder tracks to synthetic tracks with more bounce, spike and water resistance and absorption, etc.. Flat leather spiked(type) shoes vs leather and synthetic materials with more bounce, etc.. Training and exercise equipment with speed variations and vital sign monitoring. Modern legal nutritional and energy supplements. IOW Today's overall Track enhanced environment has improved tremendously; Including the social status of Women in Society. In addition, to the popular growth of Track and Field as a mainstream sport. Finally; The monetary sponsorship of the athletic clothing and apparel Industry and other consumer marketing agencies that additionally supplements Today's Athletes that Flo Jo's Era did not have. For example: Had She not have to quit school and track several times to support Herself and Family and only pursue it part-time at vital times in her career only God knows what She would have accomplished. The only breakdown needed is; FloJo's 100m and 200m times were PEDs aided, and Elaine Thompson-Herah's isn't.
For all the FloJo supporters, please explain why FloJo never ran another sprint race after October 6th, 1988 in Tokyo? Also explain why the women's 100m, 200m, and 400m sprint records were all set during the 1980s, and still stand today? Could it be related to the fact that the women of the 1980s were using anabolic steroids and other PEDs that could not be detected during that era, but can be detected now? Could it be due to the fact that there was no out of competition random drug testing like there is today? FloJo "retired" from sprinting almost immediately after her triumphs at the Seoul Olympics to focus on the 5K, the 10K, and the marathon. Imagine all the money she gave up with that move. No appearance fees, no endorsement deals, not even an offer to be a color commentator at track and field events, nothing. Why is that? She had the glamour, the beauty, the fashion, everything going for her, yet nothing. There is a "view" that she failed her drug tests at the Seoul Olympics along with a lot of other sprinters, and given the embarrassment over the Ben Johnson affair, the IOC allowed her to "retire" from sprinting in exchange for her keeping her records. Which has been unfair to all the women who compete "fairly" for the past 3 decades. Her records, along with the 400m record of Marita Koch needs to be expunged.

Flo Jo ran great, and was the class of the race. Wind aided or not, she could have beaten the others by the same margin, so the "wind only in her lane" spin isn't valid. However, this does need to be examined in fairness to every Woman who has run and every young Woman who will run the 100m, chasing a record that may not be legit. For track purists, this should be amazing, having the science broken down and a topic worth looking at. It's not a knock on Flo Jo, it's not about PED accusations and it doesn't mean her record will be stricken from the books, but it does give a better understanding of the possibilities in that race. I'm excited to see this seemingly untouchable record be approached and hopefully surpassed by ETH or SAFP as both never cease to amaze!

I reckon Flojo would have ran a legal 10.4 or better ultimately had she not retired. Her mechanics and strength were unparalleled. Look at how far out that 200m WR is, which aludes to her speed endurance being superior. Another factor to consider is the 4 rounds in championships that athletes ran in. Nowadays athletes only do 3 rounds and still mention fatigue, it was way harder to break records with 4 rounds than it is now. I am not taking anything away from Elaine because she is trail blazing and making us believe again.

Did the other runners in the 1988 race have uncharacteristically fast times as well?

  • @tool2158
    @tool2158 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Elaine may break the record eventually but today’s times are not 100% comparable to 30+ years ago. Let me give an example: Ben Johnson set the WR in the same year as FloJo hers. Despite he was later proven and admitted to have used steroids, his 9.79 have been since shattered multiple times, and Bolts WR today is 0.21s better than of doped Ben Johnson in the 80‘s. FloJos record has only been approached after 33 years and not yet beaten (which soon might change of course).

Today they get the advantage of having the information they had in 1988, and all the development and growth. So there's more knowledge.

But in Flo Jo's wind-aided 10:54 she slowed to celebrate raising her hands before the finish line. And consider her 200m WR (which has not been approached and in which she also slowed down), surely she was the fastest the world has ever seen.

I think Elaine T.Herah can break flojo record this year 2022 or 2023 soon eliane Thompson-Herah got the gift it's if Elaine trained hard n put the work in Elaine can break the flojo record Shelly Ann can break the 100m record of flojo 100.Gabby Thomas can break flojo 200 m.record if she focus on training Gabby studies a lot she get her second master degree at Texas Univ.Gabby is doing right studying for her master that master degree is forever n track n feild is temp.,3-10 years. If Gabby gets in super great shape Gabby break flojo 200m.record

None of the sprinters you mentioned will ever break Flo Jo's records of 10.49; 21.34.

Flo jo on d vid did look faster at getting the leg down under her but the stride length between them has to be looked at too.

But why didn't anyone else run a personal best in that race? Gail Devers 10.98, Diane Williams 10.88?

Joyner was winning at the time in sprinting when the USA was the sacred cow and untouchable on steroids testing. Now since testing improved USA men’s and women’s sprinting is not even showing on podiums.

Was flo Jo really 5’’7? She seemed much shorter for example she was a lot shorter than Merlene Ottey who was 5’’8 and her great rival haven’t said I thought Elaine was taller than 5’’6!!
I guess the man in this video just proved flojos time was wind aided something all knew.
Also it was very at strange that the year before she was losing to Ottey in in times that were almost half a second slower and then she didn’t race again after that year a lot of strange circumstances surrounding flojo and her one amazing season she had

Looks like Flo Jo’s legs are longer proportional to her body in comparison to Elaine Thompson-Herah… could that be the difference in stride length.. Could you compare the 10.61 and 10.60 races

To break it down is to say flojo had steroids in her system and Eliane is drug free , thats the differeance between to two runners ? Let hope drug free prevails and beats that record
