  • I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Glenlivet distillery in Speyside today. This is the "Licensed Dram" release. It's the follow-up to their Illicit Still release, and it's part of their Original Stories collection. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    Great review as always. Huge fan of this bottle too.
    There are not many bottles I add two of to the cart, but I did for this one, the value was insanely good here in NZ (maybe because Pernod Ricard has a big presence here, owning quite a few vineyards).
    Curiously, my Illicit Still bottle definitely says 'non-chill-filtered' on the green sticker on the bottle, and I assumed the Licensed Dram would be the same, but you're right! - this one doesn't mention it. Strange, I don't know why they would take that info off.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Phil! This one's fantastic! I bought a backup myself, even though it's overpriced here.
      Btw... you're right about Illicit Still stating that it's ncf on the label. I can't imagine why it was removed for the Licensed Dram. I'm assuming that it's not, but it always baffles me when a brand (especially one like this) opts not to chill filter their whisky, and then doesn't brag about it on the label. They should be screaming it to the heavens!
      Cheers!

    Illicit Still is non chill filtered. Says so in bleak small letters to the left of the portrait seal. A really great dram! Enjoying it thoroughly.

      You're right! Odd that the ncf statement was removed for this one's label. I assume it's still ncf.

    TESTICULAR FORTITUDE!
    Great band name 😂
    I recently bought a GL12 from the 80ies in an auction. (first time ever i bought something in an auction. It was cheap… the horrendously expensive Springbanks distracted the big spenders from the rusty Glenlivet 👍🏽)
    It’s so good. 43% and worlds apart from the current one. But those two special releases are quite different again.
    Great vid once again 🙌

      Wow that sounds awesome! I've never had a Glenlivet release from before the late 2000s. I've been told the older ones are fantastic. I hope you enjoy that one and that you get the chance to grab one of the Original Stories releases. Top notch stuff for the price. Cheers!

    Hello Geoff! I fully agree (again) with you. Glenlivet's are great. If you can get your hands on van Wees Ultimate bottlings of Glenlivet you should. Signatory as you mentioned as well. I think the Illicit Still is better than Licensed Dram but they are both good. As a coincidence, I was planing on opening a bottle of Glenlivet Nadurra 16-Y tonight. It is the 55,2% 2014. Have you had it?

      Hah great minds think alike! I'm not sure which batches of Nadurra I've tried. The last time I had a 16 year old was years ago, so batch numbers escape me.
      I've never had an "Ulitmate" Glenlivet, but I've heard they're good. Pretty hard to find in my market.

    Glad to see that the Glenlivet is starting to diversify their line up by introducing non-traditional offerings. A couple of websites in New Zealand and UK have this as non-chillfiltered and no color added in the description. Maybe by pure coincidence I had bought and put away GL 18 when it was 43% but I have not seen these limited offerings make their way to the Canadian market.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rohit! Yeah I assume it's ncf, but I'm not convinced about the colour. Some German websites have the opposite info, claiming it to be coloured. Often times we don't know who to trust in situations like this.
      The old Glenlivet 18 at 43% was such a stunner. I have a back-up bottle myself! I hope these Original Stories releases make it to Canada. Fantastic stuff! Cheers!

      Hah! Well as some trolls have pointed out, I'm not a "real reviewer" because I plan my videos in advance, including many of the tasting notes. In fact, my palate isn't great, which is why I like to sit down with the whisky beforehand and spend some time to jot down the flavours I find.
      Enjoy your Illicit, buddy. The Licensed Dram is worth looking out for!

  • @Nikolay_Nikolov

    Glad you liked the Licensed Dram, Geoff. I bought a bottle myself several months ago, but still haven't tasted it. Your review definitely made me curious and inpatient😀 I probably won't buy a second bottle but most certainly will save a sample or two after I open it. Just to have it for a comparison with the Signatory 12 yo single first fill sherry cask bottle I have.
    "Illicit Stills" release had never made it to our market, at least not where I can buy it, but "Licensed Dram" is available and very reasonably priced too. I can have it for 34-35 euros.
    Since the demise of the 43% 18 yo several years ago, all official Glenlivet releases available in Bulgaria have been 40%. Except for the NAS Nadurra bottles which have never been of any particular interest for me. So these "Original Stories" releases are most welcome.
    Cheers!

      Yeah it's weird, I've heard from a couple of Americans here that they can't find it, or have never heard of it. Odd. I know Illicit was/is sold in the US. It might be the case that they're just doing a verrrrry slow global roll-out for it. It came out in the UK/Europe last year, and we only got it here in Taiwan last month. I do hope it makes its way over to you guys!

      @jackthepickledhound 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lots of choices, high ABV and some distilleries you never heard of??? What's the problem?
      Solution: if it seems like a lot of money, then it probably is. You can always try and find it on Whisky base.
      There is so much cross over from bottlers and distilleries a definitive guide is impossible. My first was a distillery I heard of but never tried before and it wasn't terribly expensive. It wasn't great so I stay clear of that bottler. Generally I now buy more indies than official bottles. It's a crap shoot but I want a unique high proof dram. I'd be tempted if I saw that first bottler present with a primo whisky at a good price.

I know it was being sold via Amazon in the UK but unless I missed it we haven't seen it for sale yet in the US. I also enjoyed Illicit Still and have a bottle of the 43% 18 yr old which is fantastic...and I do have a bottle of the newer 40% 18 year old that someone gave me as a gift and it's not good, especially for the price. Yeah it seems to not be available in most (all?) of the US. It came out last year in UK/Europe, but we only got it here in Taiwan about a month ago. It seems to be a very slow global roll-out. Geoff, one way to determine if a whisky is or isn't chill filtered is that it generally clouds up to some degree if water is added when it isn't chill filtered. Chill filtration seems to remove the chance of clouding up.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true when whisky is below 46%. Whisky like this (at 48%) typically doesn't cloud up anyway, which is why it makes little sense to chill filter it. I assume it isn't. However, the Illicit Still stated that it was ncf on the bottle, whereas this one doesn't. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. 🥃

      @@Gwhisky I have 62% ABV Amrut Peated Cask Strength in my collection. I've proofed that down to 47% abv using precise measuring of water in a small sample bottle to approximate the standard bottling's abv and it clouded right up even at 47%. Its something I always try with any new bottle and look out for it. Sometimes even an 40% abv will cloud up when they don't claim it is non-chill filtered indicating they may have used a less extreme method like barrier filtration. Cheers. 🥃

      BTW my Illicit Still is "Non Chill Filtered". Says it right on the front label.

      You've been telling me about that one for ages. Trust me, I'll grab it when I can actually find it (for a reasonable price). 🥃

    Illicit Still had non chill filtered stated on the label (albeit in tiny font). This one doesn't. I don't know why Glenlivet left it off for this release, it seems like an odd choice!

      You're right, it does. I have no idea why it was removed either. Seems like a step in the wrong direction.

      @@ninetyZeven 2/3 in the specs I mean. I'll call them out for adding e150a, but I'm still happy to have a Glenlivet 12 at 48%, so I'm not going to get bent out of shape about the colour.

    Great and timely review because I'm coming to the end of a couple of those tropical pineapple whiskies (Glencadam 13 is a little cracker). I thought the Illicit Still was decent but a bit rough and I thought it could be improved. This could be what I'm looking for. Like you, I'm very pleased to see Glenlivet releasing these bottles. I think they make great spirit and the company has let themselves down badly since they got rid of their craft age statements. I always felt that it would matter to them if they became ignored by the real whisky connoisseurs (geeks like us). They're a massive enterprise and can easily produce enough spirit to cater for the mass market and us. Over the past five or six years I've had some wonderful Glenlivet but it's all been bottled by the independents. I believe it would make them happy to see that praise directed back to themselves. WT

      I'm lucky, I have a warmer feeling toward them because here in Taiwan we've had a few craft releases just for our market. Seems I also liked the Illicit more than you, and the price that was selling for was absurd, considering the quality and abv. And nostalgia is certainly a factor. Those 16 year old Nadurras were fantastic, and the 18 was always one of my favourite older whiskies, despite only being 43%. It's a great brand, and even if it's the bare minimum, it's nice to see them trying to hold on to us nerds. Cheers.
