    When I went to go buy my new car around mid 2021, the salesman took me and my parents inside but my parents had to get something from the truck so I kept walking with the guy. I've been driving since the '70s, & I've learned alot about alot. 1 of the top lessons is, "NOTHING IS FREE", as the price of the free item is hidden in the cost of the $40,000 vehicle you just bought. Dealerships, I'm sure, buy oil & filters in bulk, & costs the Dealer pennies to do an oil change. Plus it's a lead in so they can try 2 sell you other stuff. 😲😲😲 It's all a racket.

    I bought a car that needs synthetic oil back in 2013. After seeing the cost of oil changes service for synthetic, I started doing it myself, and have been happier ever since. Less than 35 dollars, and I can be sure it's quality, correct oil and filter.

    When I was younger, I went into a Meineke with an appointment for an alignment, and they kept my car on a lift for almost 2 hours for a free inspection basically keeping it for ransom as they try to sell me $2,000+ worth of repairs and said "Do you go to college? Do you get financial aid? You can pay for all these repairs with your financial aid" I declined it all as I knew my car well and do all my own repairs. They would tell me okay we'll just need to wait until the other cars move so we can lower your car, then 20 minutes later come and try and sell me the same repairs again. Over and over and over. I went outside to check on them periodically and they would just move ANOTHER car in the way of the lift so they couldn't lower it. Ontop of this, they opened my brake bleed nipple on my caliper and got brake fluid all over my tire, then pulled me over and said "look, you need a new caliper ASAP, very dangerous to drive without working brakes." Right then I knew they were pieces of $hit, because I rotated my tires just before I came to get an alignment, and the tire that was on the rear was now in the front, and was dry and clean of any brake fluid, my brakes worked just fine. I never went to them ever again and always share this story to help others avoid these a$$holes.

    I have a 2022 Corolla.. Has the 2 yr Toyota Care.. car has 20,000 miles.. they have done 4 oil changes and rotated the tires every time. My next visit is my last under the plan. They came and told me my tires were in the "red" zone that needed to be replaced asap. They were so bad that they didnt feel comfortable rotating them because the front has more tread than the rear so it was my safest option. 5000 miles before on my previous service tires were at 90% tread. Also FYI.. tires are Michelin. I just laughed and said ok.. went home and rotated my tires

    That is correct. We leased a Toyota Corolla Hybrid and it came with 4 free services...they lost our wheel lock which we had no idea the car had one. They wanted to charge us $40 to take off the wheel lock and place standard lug nuts...ridiculous...they lost it as they were the only people doing the service...I will not be going back to them ever again.

    I ASKED my mechanic to look for problems to repair going into winter and all they recommended was changing brake fluid and a filter. Two weeks later I was in for an alignment problem I suspected but they didn't notice when I came in before. Then I was back because I had antifreeze leaking all over my garage floor (I asked them about puddles and they gave me the "condensation" line - I've parked this dry truck in my garage for 5 years... you'd think I'd notice if it was normal to have a puddle under it).

    No steelerships for me thank you! Scotty, we're lucky to have someone like you out there warning innocent people! I tried to warn my son about a month ago about taking his car to a steelership for an oil change but he didn't listen. Paid WAY to much for the oil and filter AND the dumb a$$ doing the service cut off more than half of a bottom deflector shield destroying it instead of just simply removing it to get to drain plug and filter. After discovering a couple days later, my son called the service manager but he said they would have never done anything like that. Those deflector shields are put there for a reason! They might save your motor and other components from being destroyed when you run over that old muffler in the middle of the road that you didn't have time to react to miss.Find a good local mechanic and stick with them. Son will go to my mechanic next time who is just like Scotty and tells it as it is (the truth) and does great work.

    My car manual says synthetic blend can be used, but fully synthetic is recommended. They also say if you use a blend, you have to change oil every 3k miles, but with full synthetic, you can do it every 6k miles. Well, the "free" oil changes are only provided every 6k miles, but they use the blend. So unless you pay for the upgrade, you're literally potentially voiding the warranty by taking the free oil changes.

  • @charliep5139
    @charliep5139 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I say go to the dealer for oil changes if you don't feel comfortable changing it yourself or don't have the time. It's usually cheaper or as cheap as any non-dealer and at least you know they will use the right oil and filter and if there are ever any issues like they cross thread the drain bolt, over torque it or whatever, you can make them fix it. I don't know how many times I hear of those quick change places over torquing the drain bolt b/c they probably used an impact driver or messed up the oil filter cartridge canister because they don't have the special tool to get it off or whatever. Plus, the dealer usually will have swanky things like free wi-fi, a tv and free coffee and water and they usually will be done in about an hour.
    Plus, it's good training for people that are non-confrontational/good life training. If they ever try to sell you anything except for a standard oil change, just ask them to write it out on an estimate and give you a copy and that you will take it home and think about it. If they keep pressing you, just keep saying the same thing. Then, take it home, do your own research, ask people that may know about cars and then decide if you think it's necessary!

    Scotty, I have not bought a "brand new car" in over 20 years. Even over 2 decades ago when I did own a new car with a measly 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty, I still never took my cars/trucks to the dealership for repairs of any kind! That most likely helped me average 300,000 to 400,000 miles on my vehicles before I sold them and those high mileage used cars that I did sell looked and ran good because I maintained them. Also, living in Northern California Wine Country where we get no rust didn't hurt either!

    Scotty: bought used 4Runner 10 years ago (2012 model)...engine seemed noisy to me. My mechanic checked it & said it was like new with true 10K miles. I even had a brand new 2014 pulled side to side, both engines running and same noise level...finally at 60K started going back to my trusted mechanic... after the first oil change, engine quieted down significantly! I think the dealer was using the cheapest crappy synthetic oil...relearned my lesson. Never again will I take my truck to a dealer...or my 07 Honda to a dealer, which runs better than ever after my trusted mechanic did some basic maintenance. Such poor business decisions by these dealers...I got plenty to of $$, but they will never see another cent from me.

    A lot of dealers are offering the “free” oil changes because they want their leased vehicles to have proven dealer maintenance so when they resell it they can guarantee it’s a good well kept car. Most people with leases often skip maintenance intervals cause why not? They aren’t keeping the car and it’s the next guys problem.

    • @henrikhkarpynskyi8712

      Isn't it condition on the lease and they actually track it and fine you if you didnt do it? Usually maintenance for first 3 years is dirt cheap - and with a lot of luxury brands switching service to once a year/10K - we are talking about 2-3 free visits here to change oil and rotate tires.

    • @timacosta7015
      @timacosta7015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrikhkarpynskyi8712 most luxury brands were the first to pilot that free maintenance system but then others caught on as they would see leases come in with no oil changes for 20k + miles.

    The truth is that there is little honesty in the world these days and maybe there never was. The worst rip-offs are the 10,000 ,30,000 or 60,000 mile services. Every car company has these and if you really look at what they actually do is nothing but check things. That is a gift to the dealership. Trouble is they can void your warranty if you don’t fall for these. Nothing new under the sun as dad used to say. BUYER BEWARE

    Took my wife's RAV4 in for it's first oil change and they over filled the oil about 1/2 over the full line. Crawling under the car I'm 100% convinced they didn't drain oil or change the oil filter. There was no evidence of oil or oil cleaning up. It was factory new with a light dusting of dirt. Sent the dealership a message and received no response. Not impressed with my free oil change on the all important first oil change. Also not impressed with the dealership's response. Now I'm back to using the only mechanic I trust working on my cars, me.
