  • Guitar cables for pedals can be expensive- but YOU can make the best cable money can buy! Right angle guitar cables do make a difference! Learn how to solder the best instrument cables that sound great and last practically forever. Please Subscribe to my channel!! goo.gl/p1xmZJ
    Use your favorite high quality cable- mogami, canare, even belden has pro quality wire. The best wire is part of the best cable! The key is to get proper shield coverage, which i describe in the video. Soldering is important too, and i give a few tips for that too.
    I even compare the construction of my own cables against the famous "house cables" that have a "Lifetime warranty".
    By request, I've added some affiliated links(i make a small commission if you buy) for the parts to make some great cables!
    Canare Cable 10 foot: amzn.to/3ks3Xvc My fave cable, the only one I really use!
    Mogami Thin Cable: amzn.to/3mwgUFO Cheaper, thinner profile
    Mogami Regular Cable: amzn.to/3c4xVlM Cheaper than the Canare, Pretty good cable.
    GLS Right angle ends: amzn.to/3iDdm2v (I can't find the Neutrik ends on Amazon)
    Decent Patch Cable: amzn.to/32DIARk If I bought a cable, it'd probably be this one.
    Good luck! Let us know how your cable comes out!

    Just got my first soldering iron, some bulk cable, and some R/A plugs. I've watched a ton of vids on soldering and this is one of the BEST! I know it's not nearly as easy as you made it look, but you did make it look easy. I'm excited to try your methods. Thanks!

      Hey Thanks! It's true, cables can be tedious to make, but the more you make, the better you get at doing it!
      Two little extra bits of advice-
      1. don't stay on one solder joint for too long. This is likely to melt the insulation near that joint. If you need to, work on something else for 30 seconds or 1 minute before returning to "touch up" a joint
      2. Solder joints should be shiny, and look kind of "wet." That is to say, you should be able to make out the shape of the wire inside the joint rather than seeing a big "blob" of solder. If the joints look grey and blobby, redo the joint.
      Good luck! Let me know how it turns out!

    very cool video! thank you very much Frank ! I am just going to build my own patch cables, and strugling with the question which cable to buy and what jacks to go for. I know that the right angled Switchcraft 226 like jack is the one I wanna go for, but there is also the Paccs HST15PROSET2 ... but there are also the Thomann like for 1 $... is there any difference in all those types of jacks at all? For cable, thank you for showing the Canare cable, i was gonna buy the Mogami 2319 , but now I will rather go for Canare... and please, do you use any Acid for cleaning the conections before soldering or heat shrinkage covers???? Good luck!!

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Miki! Good questions! First, your connector choices: I think any of the connectors you mentioned will be good. The main thing to think about is the size. The Switchcraft ones are quite big, as are the Paccs. So if you want a larger connector, those would be the ones to get. Because they're bigger, they'll also be a bit easier to solder. The Thomann ones (Hicon hicon hi-j63ma05?) are about half the price and more compact. That also means they'll be a bit more challenging to solder. So, if your soldering skills are up to the task, I'd get the smaller ones. But if you're just starting out, the larger ones might be a little more forgiving. No wrong answer though, they'll all do the job well if they're soldered properly.
      I don't generally use any cleaning solution if the parts(contacts) look shiny. If they look clouded, I will sometimes clean the contacts with a cotton swab. If they are very old parts(NOS), I will sometimes clean them with Caig Deoxit or rubbing alcohol before soldering. This is pretty rare though. Usually just a quick buff with a dry cotton swab will take the cloudy discoloration off the contact, and it's ready to go.
      One more note regarding the cleaning above... I do use rosin core solder, which itself is a sort of cleaning agent. However, if the contacts are visibly dirty, it's still best to clean them up manually first.
      Finally, I do not use any shrink tubing on Patch cables. The extra rubber will make it more difficult to bend the cable into the shape you'll need for pedal boards. On longer guitar cables, I do like to use shrink tubing if I have it on hand, but it's not a dealbreaker if I don't have it.
      Best of luck, and let me know how they turn out!

      @@FrankOlsonTwins I am very appreciated for your time! I would go for the Canare GS 6 cable, though the capacitance is quite high there, 160 pF/m, but the Mogami 2319 is the same... and watched some tests on youtube, and the Belden 9778 was pretty great... but others prefered your Canare, I like it too. I have guitar cable the Cordial 75, thats only 88 pF/m. But 7 mm in diameter and also useing other, Sommer spirit XXL 6 m. I have some experience with the soldering, but I am not master at all. The size is the exact question I had... and those Thoman jacks for 1$, they look the same as switchcraft 226, but probably the quality is not well, some people said in the comments, that the tip breaks inside the effects etc... some signal is lost somewhere within the jack. Well , the most important for me is the sound quality, so you say, that there is no difference between the audio properties in between regular Switchcraft 226 among 228 ? (among big angled vs. pancakes?) And about the cleaning, I will try to make sure, to clean it if its dirty, and my solder has something in it too... :D Thanks also for the recommendation about the shrinking tape, as the pedalboard is not moving, I also dons see the necesity to stiffen the cables too much. very excited about it...

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At such short cable lengths it would be very hard to hear the difference between any of those quality cables. One thing about the sommer cable I used, the shield braid was not easy to solder. I probably won't use that exact cable again. I try to buy connectors that have a good track record- making cables is time consuming so if they break within a few months, it can be frustrating. So if the Thomann connectors are poor quality, I'd look at some better connectors. There wouldn't be an audio difference between the 226 or 228, but the 228 looks like it might be trickier to solder: In the pictures, it looks like the 228 doesn't have solder contacts? I think you'd have to solder directly to the case shell, but if you feel comfortable doing that, it would be a good choice.

    On a different note, my last pedalboardbuild, I used the Squareplug SP400 connectors .... they look identical to the connectors you are using, but yours have a different logo/brand. What brand are those?

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are Rean brand(I believe they acquired Neutrik a few years ago). So many of the parts have been rebranded as "Rean" or "Neutrik/Rean." SP400 looks like a good comparable plug.

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Check really closely for stray wires connecting things they shouldn't. That alone will short out a cable. Also be sure the solder joints are solid, they should be shiny and the wire should not move inside the joint. Loose joints can cause crackle. If they move, re-solder the joint.

    I see how you used a piece of wire for the 2nd connector shield, and technically would easily be able to do that as well. But my question is why? What is the advantage to doing that versus simply soldering the ground directly? I will usually twist and tin 1/2 of the shield, and then it is small enough to fit through the connector hole. This is a sincere question, not an argumentative one. If there is an advantage to doing it that way, I’ll do it.

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Good question! This is usually a standby technique I use if the shield splitting method isn't working well for some reason. In this case, the shield was extremely flexible and difficult to keep twisted without fraying. This can also help if you need to extend a shield connection without losing the end of your cable.

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm being honest, I might try a round shouldered pancake plug in the future. These square ones do have a nice look to them, but they feel a little bulky on the board. No good reason not to use them though, as long as you don't overpay for them!

    Hi, is there a difference between de SP400 and SP500?

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SP500 is smaller. It's designed for smaller diameter cables as well, such as Canare GS-4 and Mogami W2319.

      @@FrankOlsonTwins I just bought Canare GS6 and some SP500 connectors. So I assume this will not work?

    • @FrankOlsonTwins
      @FrankOlsonTwins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello, i can't confirm that it won't work, but it might not be easy. You could possibly trim some of the insulation from the cable whee the connector meets the cable. Sometimes that's necessary for a tight fitting cable.
