The rule change for pre-rotation is one thing. Whether judges can ACCURATELY recognize it and assess it would be another thing. There have been too many incompetent judges who couldn't even see wrong edges and URs. I strongly believe that ISU should 1. Bring in multiple cameras and evaluate the jumps from all angles; 2. all judges should take a course, a training, and an exam all over again to be better judges; 3. make them reveal the reasoning for how they determined each GOE.

Elizabet Tursynbaeva has been recuperating from injury and basically sat out this past season. Given that she's 20, it's possible she's considering retirement. At the same time, she has a free ticket to the Olympics with Kazakhstan in 2022, so perhaps she's just taking the time to make sure she's fully recovered before making one last run at glory. (Her Danse Macabre program intended for last season showed a lot of promise; hopefully, she uses it this season if she returns.) However it unfolds, she deserves credit for pulling off 4CC and Worlds silvers past her 18th birthday.

Here is the thing : Honestly, how else would these girls ( Sasha / Anna - and, yes, I know Anna’s pre-rotation has a more) complete these difficult jumps without some level of pre-rotation? I think it unfair to compare women’s jumps to men ( a lot of videos on TH-cam do this). Also, I find it off-putting when people compare a “good” triple lutz,to (a pre-rotates) quad lutz. That it simply an illogical comparison. Also, not all people jump the same way. Sure, maybe a “perfect” (aesthetically pleasing ) triple axel goes up before pulling in the arms. It's funny how people are saying the change in base values is to make Yuzuru competitive with Nathan. For both Yuzuru and Nathan, the change in the base values of the quads they can jump is ±0. Remember Yuzuru didn't jump the 4Lo at 4CC.
And everyone knows that it's not the rules that are causing problems it's their implementation. Every judge is given the same stopwatch but they can operate it at their own timing however they like for different skaters. Intentionally or unintentionally they can start it early or stop it early and never be punished for it.

    • @allaboutyuzu

I agree. Nathan has the 4F but isn’t currently jumping the 4Lo; Yuzuru has the 4Lo but isn’t jumping the 4F. They both have a 4Lz, so I don’t think it’ll impact their rivalry much at all. The flip being the same value as the lutz was definitely weird to see. But, one possible theory explaining the change... I’ve heard that for some people, the anatomy of their hips can drastically impact their ability to properly go off an inside edge vs. outside edge on jumps. Perhaps this is to account for that and to be a more body-neutral way of scoring these jumps. This is all just my theory and speculation, though.

I disagree about bringing down Lz BV. I personally don't know if Lutz jump is harder compared to flip jump. Some say that the counter rotation makes it harder but some said that it's the same as flip , it's just some skaters are natural lutz jumper. I personally love Lz jump when it's done right (like Rika's or Liza's lutz). I think it is a mistake changing the BV.
4Lo now has same BV as 4Lz and 4F whereas 3Lo does not. Maybe ISU reviewed past season jump trends? 4Lo was indeed the rarest. I heard from 1 commentator that 4Lo is hard because it's so much more difficult to launch yourself high enough from Lo entry to rotate 4x. Also some say that Lo jump could damage your spine long term. But one thing for sure, no one could have predicted that ISU released new guidelines in the middle of a lockdown.
I am curious though how will judges use full blade rules to penalize the skaters.

Thank you Dave and Jonathan; I don't know if you read comments this late, but I hope so. Comparing these micro-adjustments to measuring violin angles and Jonathan's comparison to judging singing by relying on missing a quarter rest rather than cultivating the ability to hear and appreciate the timbre, the gorgeous interpretation, is it beautiful -- all great. Many figure skating fans all over the world agree with you two here! However, I do think the ISU, by making these changes, are trying to reward what they want to see. i.e. the changes in pairs in 2018 have meant that quality is rewarded over risk and danger. I like the "Q," because it means that skaters who only UR a little can get full value for the jump and only lose some GOE points.

All the ladies use this technique, except veeeery few including Kostner, Tuktamysheva, Rika, Sotskova, and Tsurskaya. If the pre-rotation rule was in place in 2018, you would probably see Tuktamysheva and Tsurskaya on the Olympic team. And if they all skated clean, probably Tsurskaya would be Olympic champion as she has correct edges and the biggest jumps (I believe her 3Lz was calculated to be even bigger than Trusova's 4T). Tuktamysheva has a 3A but she would get called on her 3F edge and she didn't have a 3S so her layout would be limited and BV wouldn't be as high. In regards to Flip/Lutz, why not reward them differently only if they can jump both? Why not reward them X points for the first jump (Flip or Lutz) and reward them X + Y points on the other? For example, if skater attempts: Lutz and then Flip, reward X points for Lutz* and X+Y points for Flip* (and vise versa). If there is an edge error, they can deduct points. In this way, the Lip jumper would not get advantage over Flutz jumper. However, quad lutz, if done right (taking off on the true outside edge without switching to the inside at any moment before takeoff), is way harder than both 4F and 4Lp and should have more base mark. That said, if all the flutzes are not penalized correctly. This discussion is moot.

    • @snowangel7980

Why would Tut want to reduce the BV of a 4Lz/3Lz if her skaters can compete with a flat or inside edge and still get full points? Especially since not all skaters can do that? (See Rika for the first half of the season). To me this scoring change is aimed at men. Also, why would Tut advocate for more strict rules against prerotation and full blade assistance? Anna and the younger girls in her group really struggle there. URs getting marked if they’re iffy at a quarter? Would hurt Aliona and Anna, who both have borderline 3A and quads.

  • @aflautist

I thought the rule changes were very anti-Shcherbakova with the full blade assist and as she was jumping 4 Lutzes in her free last season. ISU maybe wants to promote more diverse jumping repertoire? Still doesn't make sense to me though. And bringing down the value of the lutz is just infuriating, they've changed the sport all the way down to the beginner skaters without viable explanation. When I watch gymnastics I don't have any idea how those scores are calculated as I only watch during the Olympic season..I think figure skating is there for the casual viewers and then some.

The half dozen skaters that I skate with find a proper lutz harder than the flip. Don't understand why the ISU is making them the same value. Is it to buoy the Eteri girls over Elizaveta's beautiful outside edge? And maybe it reduces the point score for the top Japanese women who have third lutz edges? I can't figure it out.

Could explain why Frank Carroll's rink is closing, i.e. in anticipation of the forthcoming competition? In any case, I don't know about you guys, but I think this arena (and Palm Springs in general) could be perfect for a Skate America in the next few years. I was laughing in my head because I remember the day all the ladies were doing triple lutz double toe in the short program, and I have wondered how many skaters would have rather have done triple flip double toe. I also wonder with what they are doing with the quads now, should the salchow and toe be the same too value too? I predict that if they go forward with the season they will try to arrange GP locations that are in nations where there is a small case load or where it has been resolved. Perhaps athletes will be expected to arrive early and train in isolation at local rinks for a week or two before competing to ensure that everyone is healthy. Then remove audiences. The MLB is hosting games without audiences but only in Arizona. So I assume this will be the same.

The thing is, Slovakia for example is one such country with low infection rate and well handled situation - they just cancelled both Nepela challenger and JGP Kosice - probably because they want to keep doing well with the pandemic. This might happen with other locations. From point of view of the hosting country, it might just be too much of a risk. Then there is an issue of athletes being unable to train on ice or to get through the boarders at all - in Moscow you cannot even leave your house currently and this situation will fluctuate for different areas creating somewhat unfair competition. Sadly, it seems unlikely we will see many international FS competitions this year.

The change in ISU point system has 0 theoretical impact, other than extra publicity, which in itself is positive for ISU, milking all that juicy fandom drama (ratings, people!)
My only fear is that the changes in points (i.e. devaluation of proper technique/execution of certain jumps) added to the nebulous “q” will exacerbate the worst in so-called “subjective calls”, but we will have to wait and see. I am especially curious to see how GOEs and PCSs will evolve if skaters start skating cleaner programmes with chosen “more comfortable” jumps for them… Some GOEs awarded in 2019 were arguably unjustifiable following ISU’s own rulebook, but under new rules - not so much the case.
