For those of you who don't know, Doom is actually a 2d game designed from a topdown perspective. Every frame, the game checks what the player should be able to see and draws it on the screen appropriately. When the player goes up and down in altitude, they just go forward and the game draws the scenery to look like you're going up or down. I suspect the newer ports are built of 3d, but the original's philosophy is still there. As proof, the wierd jumps when Link goes inside caves or item rooms are because the game warps him somewhere else. The map is entirely 2d, and there couldn't be anything else above or below it, so instead, the Link is just sent to a different location on the map. Honestly, it's really impressive what creative modders can do, and this mod looks really fun!
Jared's fascination with actually going UP a hill in a game from the 80's is truly fascinating. It's neat how a simple change to a simple game can be such a different experience.
I swear the last couple months with Jared has been some of his best series, and some of the best gold on youtube. Genuinely thanks to Jared and his team.

I don't think he literally meant it was from Daggerfall, just that its one of those stock sound effects that daggerfall was famous for using (and nintendo also uses lots of stock sound effects)
As someone who has played this (and several other Doom total conversions) in VR, I can safely say that I have legit been jumpscared by enemies popping up unexpectedly.
I fricking NEED this in my life now! As a Zelda veteran, but also Doom-chad enjoyer, this is heaven. Only thing missing would be a metal cover of the Zelda songs! XD Please make a series out of it!

this guy knows about the exploit of leaving the first dungeon and going back in to get a free key, I'm pretty sure he knows how zelda 1 bow and arrow works lmao
I saw Mike Matei play this and he nitpicks the hell out of it. He hates the large shield sprite being the Hylian Shield, he hates the bomb holes and bushes being more easy to find, and he hates that enemies can shoot you through doors in the dungeons. I'm glad Jared is liking it, though. I'm always down for some Zelda/Jared playthroughs. I hope he sticks with this one.
That item respawn also made me jump and was super weird. The enemy spawning jump scares are hilarious though and I hope for more. This is a super cool way to experience Zelda and I can't wait to see the whole quest!
This is brilliant. Sat here ready for ALL the Legend of Doom-da. Surprisingly good fidelity toward the original game in execution. Looking forward to seeing the rest!
This is a childhood dream come true! Besides the obvious 1st person aspect being awesome, the draw distance gets me too. It's so surreal being able to see that far. This NEEDS to be on Switch! ....but we all know how much Nintendo loves remakes of their IPs

The spatial awareness thing is real. And especially amusing because when you were on a quest to buy a candle... the one cave you just blew off since you thought you had already been in it was also a candle shop.

This is such a cool game! I remember seeing short clips of it a long time ago when it had just started development but seeing the whole thing finishing is another entirely! Looking forward to this playthrough immensely!
I love how DOOM total conversions are still a thing. I remember using webcrawler to search the web back in the 90s trying to find all the cool new total conversions.
The "save" feature leaves a little something to be desired, but otherwise this looks like a wonderful game! Every time someone does something like this, with the oldest Zelda games, I get all happy, and nostalgic, because I grew up with these, and so many modern players don't concern themselves with such things, and I'll do so again; this is wonderful!
Doom will not only be ported to everything, but it will also _be_ everything. Radical.

That's how it works in Zelda 1, but in the NES version you have to buy the arrow item before the bow can fire anything.

Oh no! The boomerang is alt-fire (right mouse by default, I think) and always equipped. I'll have to think of a way to communicate that.

I actually love the way the sword and shield look in this as an FPS. I hope we get something like Zelda 2 like this but with a more clear Engine.
