  • Spoon feeding your baby is an exciting step, but can also be extremely challenging. Some babies will gag, spit food, or flat our refuse to even open their mouth.
    Thankfully there are things you can do to make the process much easier for both your and your baby. It starts by avoiding some really common spoon feeding mistakes. Some things that feel natural to us, or that we do without even thinking twice, can actually make eating a real challenge for a baby. With one or two little tweaks to the spoon feeding process you might just find it suddenly becomes much easier!
    In this video you'll learn 4 common spoon feeding mistakes and how to fix them to make meal times easier.
    I hope this helps!

    Hi Emma. Hope you reply to this. Thanks for your videos. They're very helpful. I'm in Kenya and knowing the various things to do and products to buy has been very helpful since my LO was born. She's now 16 months and a very picky feeder. all mealtimes are like a battle. She doesn't swallow the food but just stores it in the mouth. We're forced to really coerce her. What tips do you have for very picky feeders(been this way since she started solids at 6m)

    Hey Emma ! I’m 24 with my first baby girl who is almost 10 months now. The only reason I got through these 10 months is YOU , I swear you’re amazing 🩷 could you please elaborate on why my baby sometimes opens her mouth the tiniest bit before snapping it shut before the spoon even gets to her mouth ?? That gets really frustrating 😅

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s so nice! I am sure you are doing an amazing job with your little one.
      It’s hard to say why your little one is closing her mouth before you place the food in. She might be trying to tell you that she is full and doesn’t want any more food (if it is towards the end of the meal).
      If you feel comfortable, you might have more success if you let your little one place the spoon in her mouth. You could load up the spoon first and then hand it to her to place in her own mouth. It will be a bit messy but with time she will have more control over the spoon. She would also be able to eat safe finger food at this age. So if you haven’t already given her finger food you could try that too!
      I hope that helps.

    • @marziamamdani5373
      @marziamamdani5373 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EmmaHubbard thank you so much for replying ! I’ll try giving her the spoon , I think that may be it because I’ve noticed that she is pretty independent in everything else as well. And yes , she eats finger foods too and I’ve even noticed that if I try to feed her the finger foods she won’t eat them because she wants to do it herself !

      In regards to which approach parents use when introducing solids I recommend parents go with what they are most comfortable with. As parents you need to be confident and project the image that food is safe, so it’s important you use the method you are most comfortable with.
      Professionally and personally I use the spoon feeding approach. This is because the oral motor skills at 6 months are able to manage puréed/mashed food well. But it’s important to note that a bub’s oral motor skills develop very quickly so that by 7 months the baby is managing mashed foods and sticks of toast/meltables and by 8-9 months they are managing safe finger foods. So really it’s only the first two months (tops) that the food you give a bub is slightly different.

    I’m wondering what you think of spoons that have a guard to keep baby from gagging/choking on them? Like the nuby dipeez. My baby loves to feed himself but he doesn’t have the motor skills quite yet so I let him use the dipeez spoon to practice. I wonder if it would actually delay his ability to self feed with a spoon or if it’s just something his motor skills have to catch up with.

    Does the cleanup rule (waiting to the end) apply to bottle feeding as well? We have a habbit of mopping upany dribbles asap mainly before it reaches her clothes (we don't routinely put a big on her). She has a weak latch/suck so will often let out some from the sides pretty early.

    Hi again 😊 we have eci for this as well because hes 12m and struggles to want foods of any sorts consistently. And usually he will only play with food on his tray (bring to 1-2x only) and have me fees him from my hand or spoon what i am eating from my plate. So he ate 2 french frys and couple baby bites of avacado and few beans covered in chili sauce today with me giving little water cup (he wont do it himself and chews straw cup). Wondering if you have any advice on how to get him more interested in eating since he'll come off formula soon and needs nutrition. Hes behind in most areas of things 😅 thank you if you read this ❤

      Hi! It’s hard to say why he is not wanting to eat other textures of food.
      If possible an assessment with a speech pathologist who specialises in mealtimes would be helpful. They would be able to assess your little one and give you specific recommendations.
      In the meantime you could try placing textured food onto the table or the tray of his highchair for him to play with, without the pressure to eat it. This allows him to become familiar with the different textures and get him one step closer to eating them.
      Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

But everybody else in my family is trying to correct me (wrong). For example they want me to scrap the escaped food of her chin. Baby always stops eating. Then they say it's not tasty because no salt etc... So annoying. I wish to live alone with her. 😂😂😂

      It's so difficult to be a mom. Nobody helps becausr it's mom's work to take care of a baby but they have thousand of opinion how to do it better than you and when their opinion are wrong it's still mom's fault. I am already exhausted enough without their unhelpful opinions. 😢 "Don't hold th baby, it'll spoil her. Your milk supply is low (because baby is crying). She should wear socks (it's 28 degress, nobody's wearing socks). She should have a pillow and a blanket, it's uncomfortable. If grandma was here, baby wouldn't cry..." I don't have time to eat myself, neither to take a shower. And they insists I have to eat with them but sometimes baby wanted to nurse/ sleep/ hold when she was younger. And then you're holding the baby to prevent crying and they ask you why you don't eat... But how... It's really difficult to eat while holding a baby. And they are watching TV all the time. Some these loud advertisement comes in and wakes up the baby. Sometimes I couldn't even go to the toilet. I was on my way and the baby started crying and they called me immediately: "Baby's crying." (Meaning I should make it stop.) It was difficult to even drink enough water. Or they want me to just let baby cry suddenly. And they always recommends to give baby a fruit juice. To put juice into the formula bottle and give it to baby. (Because baby cannot/don't know how to use a cup). Even when she was less than six month old. And then they say I force baby to sleep (when she's obviously overtired). Or that I'm not a good mother because I don't watch baby carefully enough. (E.g. I didn't notice that baby is crying much louder than before, actually I did but like a week or two before them so for me it was old news.) They even insisted on keeping giving baby medicine when she was obviously recovered... "Don't be stubborn and wait until it comes back better give now to prevent it." They don't even accept I don't want baby to watch TV. Everyday they say "look how calm she's watching TV." (I cannot avoid it while meal time, they watch TV everytime they eat). I'm just literally exhausted from insisting on my parenting style everyday. You're parent and you cannot even decide how to take care of your baby but if something's wrong with the baby it's your fault.
