This must have taken days to put together. I really admire the passion that you have for the Tekken community. I remember stumbling across your channel back in 2010. You're the reason I learned the Mishima/Kazuya match up, how to apply mixups, and the EWGF. Thank you for all the hard work, and dedication to this series. As a Kazuya main, I salute you. God bless dude!
From experience, the best way to learn a character's play style and gimmicks is to use them. In TTT2, I HATED fighting Zafina as the way she moved her body threw me off. I decided to use her and found myself thinking "Oh...this is when they do this or that." You start learning the gimmicks first hand and from then on, Zafina has never been a real problem. In T7, this method has worked for Chloe, Akuma, Katarina, Law, Jack etc..Know when you face someone using your main and you block alot of their tricks cause you're familiar with the character? Same concept applies to when you use gimmicks characters. Out of every 10 matches, I lose to Chloe twice tops. The opponent's play style is still a factor but using that character is a very fast way to learn the match up.
The funny part is when you run into someone who plays your character completely differently than you would, and it really throws you for a loop for a bit, hahaha.
Better to lab their move list and practice punishment. Playing the character yourself is not really going to teach you as much about how to defend against them.
Unfortunately T7 doesn't allow players to lab DLC characters unless you have them which while there are ways to go around, it kinda dampers the experience that you can't even use them in practice unless you pay extra.
Kira Masaru something I ingrained into my mentals ...its just annoying because the game lags you can't enjoy the game went it prevents you from playing to your best

Great video. Really enjoyed the amount of effort, thought, and how genuine and honest Tmm was in this video. Lots to offer and surely will improve peoples game if they take it seriously. TMM is the reason I started playing tekken competitively and over the years I can honestly says he has increased my drive to learn and get better and my passion for the game as a whole. If it wasnt for him, I would have gave up in green ranks due to the sheer amount of gimmick awareness needed. Or at the very least I would have dropped my favorite characters for easier ones. So once again, another inspiring Tekken video. Thanks TMM.
Good shit TMM. Even though you have very limited time you still serve us with quality content. Very objective, calm and simple explaination on this topic. This was totally necessary because of all that whining, discussion and misunderstanding going on frequently in the twitch chat about this. Also I really would have liked to see TheMainBrotherSWE blocking them sweeps. Hope he soon feels like buying T7 for PC or has time to visit you so you could record some DMs ;) Kudos~
Good job Main Man! Probably one of the most comprehensive guide I've seen online (and I've looked). Very well researched, well executed and comes with bonafide elite skill level experience backing it. Impressed! Keep up the great work!
This is very true. Green ranks have so many flow charts and when you recognize them you realize they're not doing a mixup, they're just doing flowcharts. They're ALWAYS gonna go for that low in that string. They're ALWAYS gonna go for that while standing launcher after that low.
When you pulled up the green rank slide, everything i read and heard was me in a nutshell, such an accurate description all round and well constructed video, thanks for the great information and positive words to keep me going learning Jin !
Great video MainMan. I struggle with jin online and always think I suck when ever I lose, because I know most of his moves list but just can't seem to advance in rank. You pointed out a lot of my weaknesses in this video but the biggest ones are patience and knowledge.
Hey this might sound dumb and I'm sure you hear it all the time. I'm glad you made a video like this and just make videos in general. I've been playing Tekken since 3 but never really did anything but mash buttons until 6. I've finally started actually trying to learn how to play and playing online. You have helped me a lot and brought me inspiration to not give up or be a salty player. Your content is great and it's easy to understand. Your a great teacher and I hope you enjoy doing this. I hope one day I can maybe vs you just for the fun of it lol. Have a good day mate and stay safe. Hope to see more content and tips from you
I'm new to the game and falling for Tekken 8 hype so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before then. This vid may be years old but it's very helpful in basically helping me understand that it's okay to be overwhelmed by the game and even high level players can be, and no one's really expected to know how to deal with every move from every character even at high levels though it starts to get more important to know more and more up there. Slowly, I'm gaining the confidence to start playing real matches.
Being a Tekken player is like being a Super Saiyan. I feel you have to get your as whooped a lot to get stronger. Then there are the Yaamcha's in the mix...
What I'm doing in t7 is establishing my mains first. Kazumi, feng, Lars, and raven. Then play one main per week alongside a new character per week. My ultimate goal is to get every character to fighter rank. Thus giving me some needed knowledge of every character. By the time this is achieved, most online players left playing tekken 7 will be serious tekken players, and I will then try to master my mains.
thats the most and easiest to understand tekken video i've ever seen in my life. thx for that video tmm! hope you keep your content great and stay awesome ;)

Really thank you for this video. I was aware of most of these things but you really confort me in my opinion :) unpredictability and awareness are key and its very difficult because your worst opposant is your muscle memory xD all the thing you learned just become automatic for energy economy and learn more stuff. But when you want improve after some years you have to get rid of some of your habits because its make you predictable and its so frustrating xD anyway thank again i let you I have some research to do to become warriors at least ^^ keep up the good work and one day may be we'll meet on the online :)
This video was very informative. I always am open to learn and take in more and more information every day. Indeed, TEKKEN is a hard game, due to movement being complex compared to other Fighters. However, it is slightly slower paced. Once you look at a match in a broadened perspective, everything will seem much more clear to you. It's all about remaining good composure, reaction, & timing. I find myself becoming overwhelmed when I drop something due to lag, or minor mistakes. Thus, making me play far from my fullest potential. Something I have to work on (Patience). I'm currently a Vanquisher w/ Miguel. And I have to be so very keen w/ my choice of attacks. Higher ranks don't fall for strings/gimmicks/certain set-ups. Unless, timed properly, of course. Considering how much of a heavy rush down character Miguel is, it's quite challenging being more passive/defensive w/ him. All due in time, I suppose.
Inspiring video TMM! Just reached Vanquisher with Bryan and Law on both PS4 and PC, and I do definitely recognize myself in those rank "stereotypes" described in this video. I've played tekken for years, but didn't start playing more seriously until TTT2, and based on my experience with the game I can only confirm that the things TMM is talking about in this video is almost spot on.
Thank u so much for ur video MmS. There was SOOO much I never even considered nor thought about until now. While there's high level players posing as low-levels everywhere in Tekken, thanks to ur videos I'm taking that MORE as an opportunity to deal with people like them rather than get bothered by them as I used to and hopefully...the newer players like myself can improve much more and have an opportunity to grow in Tekken. :) I hope u continue to help players like myself with ur advice and knowledge
Thanks a lot Tmm. I agree with u on a lot of things. I am one of those players who prefer easier to use characters, with not so many stances and moves.
Excellent points all around. I will share this with my tekken buddies and with tournament competitors , this is a cool way of teaching the game and to address the huge learning curve of the game . Once you stuck with the system and you do the research this game gets incredibly addictive, and most new players lose that opportunity by hitting a wall at first rather than a welcoming experience with a complete system tutorial . Plus , legacy skill is so important than a new player gets so overwhelmed that is not optimal . Thanks for this men , hopefully it will turn frustrated players into learning machines and creative play. Cheers ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️. PS : study some Yoshimitsu. You get the wins because you aren’t getting good competition, but I’ve seen good players run 5 to 6 games on you hehe.
Great video Tmm you always provide great knowledge and information on how to improve and get better. It really is nice to see how mainman took the time out to educate people about the importance of adaptability and gimmick awareness in the green ranks this should help many out.
What you said before is so true, you’ll find Bryans and kazuyas in yellow ranks that play the game with fundamentals. And in the other hand you’ll find katarinas that are destroyers and they don’t know what to do if you have good defense
A lot of people do this and I used to too, don’t get mad over losing, you either win or learn. If you pay attention to what is the opponent doing, they usually do the same pattern of attacks at times
If you play player match rather than ranked for a good bit you're going to find that one dude with 1000 wins. My recommendation is to keep fighting them you will be surprised what things you learn. More importantly you'll be surprised when you successfully steal a round from someone who has a much deeper understanding of the game. I often times enjoy fighting these people because progression is more obvious. It also develops your own way of fighting. Another thing that's good about it is that your opponent adapts quicker which forces you to do the same.
Its important to note that tekken is all about adapting and "going with with the flow." Learning the opponent's playstyle and countering accordingly but some players don't have a pattern or playstyle. I can beat purple ranks who know what they're doing but sometimes its harder to face light blue ranks who clearly don't know what they're doing as they have no pattern. You can't predict what they'll do as they just throw out ANY move which makes mix ups irrelevant. Not that they win though as I just become super aggressive and kill their health bar. This is a factor in green ranks. I'm an overlord(19th dan) in case people wonder.
I was reading a book that had a great deal of air combat strategy. A question of variability arose when one has someone on their tail trying to shoot them down. Try as they might a person cannot be random (variable) as they might think. In order to truly be variable, a person would need to plan their variability through computer program or their own mathematical formula. Perhaps this is where the flowchart concept was originated.
marauder feng. I've been analysing my playing recently and realised I've been playing gimmick char. I realised i loose to gimmick chars and get outclassed by mishima and other honest chars. Very easy for me to get to marauder but cannot go beyond. So i just watched this video and your breakdown of ranks is 100% spot on. If I am loosing to characters I am familiar with due to previous encounters i adapt. No adaptation and i loose or win with crazy offence. Every beginning tekken player should watch this video. I'll try to pick up Jin now to relearn the game. Although I do love Fengs movelist :D Thank you.
I watched the whole video and most of these are my problem, I'm currently stuck between maruder and fighter gonna play some tekken today and see if I can change my had habits, good video earned a sub :)
DottierDig 95 I used to play Kazuya in the past. God, it's so frustrating. He could be the hardest character to win with along with Jin Kazama. Now I learned the lesson and only play Paul, Claudio, King and Steve. Feeling much more comfortable now lol. By the way some times when I challenge beginners I use him to make it fair, but have no idea how to punish rage art or any -15 stuff. What do you do in that case?
I played Tekken 5 back in the day and i was pretty decent with Hwoarang. Of course i didn't know anything about frames etc. I wanna take up tekken 7 so bad now and my two favourite characters are Jin and Hwoarang. Is it gonna be a nightmare when i finally get the game and start grinding?
Thank you TMM for this Vid. It was and is very educational for me as a 26 year old noob tekken player who played tekken 5 and had no idea what the hell is going on. when I left you I were but a student... now I am nowhere near a master but I enjoy tekken WAAAAAAY MOOOOOOOOOOORE now. keep healthy, stay safe and cheers!
After a bit over a year of playing tekken with Jin as my main, I'm still not doing great online. After looking at your chart of efficiency over time I completely agree that I'm getting much better than I was a few months ago, but I still need another year or two to actually play efficiently with him. I love this game haha
I think there's a huge distinction to be made in the "doing things while not thinking" category. If you just go out and do the same moves in a certain order over and over, it's bad but if you can mix playing by instinct with calculation / knowing how to adapt then you're really good. What I mean is: if you can stop reminding yourself how you should react to certain moves and if you can just "do it", you got skills.
I'd rather fight against Eddy instead of Bob. Almost every Bob player is like b+2,2 and d/f+3,4,4. When I try to block the low from his d/f+3,4,4 a lag spike happens and I end up getting hit that I'm standing when I already held d/b before he did the low kick. I mean, fighting Bob isn't a problem offline, but I'm talking about online. I'd prefer fighting gimmick characters instead of aggression-friendly characters because gimmicks don't always work on every player with different playstyles. I just won 3 times against an Eddy player recently. Helicopter kicks all day.
This is great cus I tried to be a Steve and hworang player in tekken 4 then I gave up after a couple year I never understood frame rate and how movement is key I had bad execution until I picked back up tekken 7 now I’m picking up devil Jin quickly
3 years ago, Asuka didn't do well in tournaments. Nowadays, I see more and more doing decent recents, I could point to Fergus for example who is a killer with her. I love when a game evolves, especially because I love Asuka and Kazuya 🤣
This video is great fundamental FG mentality stuff. However, I was expecting some of the misc. knowledge specific to the game itself- like dickjabs can be low parried, ultimate tackle is a 1+2 break (and how to reversal it), what that the hell universal uf+2 does...
You can EWGF against Ling, but you must use it very sparingly. It works best as DEWGF from range 2 since at this range, Lings moves are generally in a regular standing position. It's a good keepout move when used like this, just don't get predictable using it. Use it 90% of the time as a whiff punisher. D/f+2 is your true friend in this matchup, as well as ff+4 and tsunami kicks. SS+3 seems pretty effective too, as is f+3 but with its usual risks.
Thanks for this information I learned a lot plus I knew some of this stuff so it was also some good review because of this it helped me calm myself when dealing with characters and got Lee to vanquisher
I love the ending. If you don't like what I have to say find a video that suits your opinion ad GL with that🤣🤣 I say this with gratitude. I liked the video. I can attest going from the run in snake edge and orbital bryan to the hatchet kick and taunt bryan has been so frustrating. And then you end up facing someone who can't do a basic wall combo but kill you with a string that has lows in it. TY TMM
Would Lei be an allround character? And how would the effeciency go with him? He has some nasty mid low mixups so I'd imagine after you find good moves in the first week you can do well but I wonder how he does in higher ranks?
After have spent 800 Wins with Kazuya and still stuck at Usurper i can easely say that im not that great with him even though i can do PEWGF. Its the fact that i cant block correctly cuz of reaction. Reaction plays a huge part of this game.
I picked up DJ as my first character to learn. Fucking hell was it a horrible time trying to play against my friends, but I stuck with him, and now I can finally hold my own against them. I also tried Katarina for a bit, just to be able to learn the game instead of just the character DJ, but I quickly got bored of her once I did. It is so much more satisfying to play an advanced character imo.
So I just picked an unthankful and demanding character in Kazuya... I still feel most comfortable with his moveset though lol. Guess I'll keep eating dirt and improve the hard way then. No pain no gain!
Thank you for the FACT & TRUTH based opinion video TMM. What you said about knowing your own character I found especially true for myself in ttt2 & still in t7. I used Paul/s.bob in ttt2 and always found my Paul advanced more than my s.bob, I found that o,e character was simpler to play then the other. I was held in lower ranks(grand master) because I was not good enough with s.bob and if they could beat Paul then they could beat me. As soon as I put in the time & did my research on s.bob I found myself PROPELLED all the way up to warrior in a matter of months. It took me weeks to get good with Paul & almost a year to get good with s.bob. so I wanted to say thank you for telling people not to give up on the character they like just because it takes a long time to get better.
Old video new to me helped a bunch. I do use kat and I heard she was nerfed but I picked her up because people are cheesy. Most ppl who are good who play ppl who are not as good, cheese. Then tell you to get good by getting beat up and never explain any of this. I was new to Tekken 7 as of 2021 lol not that I did t watch it but I didn’t even have the game. Getting my ass handed to me for hours trying to play characters that take knowledge of the game and match up knowledge gets a new player no where. I’m glad the nerfed kat, so I don’t have to hear excuses as to how I’m able to defend, counter and get off combos with a character that has easy combos vs you (whoever) who have been playing for years
I don't 100% agree with you about the efficiency-through-time chart (my main's Xiaoyu). I've watched lots of your videos, ones about fighting sessions, and others like this one, and I learn everytime I watch you. I've seen also Tanukana and Yuyu in tournaments to have a look at their playing. Then, I go to the lab trying punish, how to break grabs, developing aerial combos to reach a wall and trying to do something effective, but I'm still blocked in yellow ranks after around 2k fights (I've been demoted today to Warrior because I've lost a lot against a strong Juggernaut Lars, I don't give up after 2 matches). Sometimes, I can apply what I've learned, but sometimes not. For example, I couldn't punish some of the basic moves of Lars with Xiaoyu, because he's most of the times out of range after blocking, and sometimes I just can't punish him even though it was a launcher and I don't know why. When I duck or block while crouch, ing it's difficult to punish properly too... I read and hear everywhere she's so easy to win with, but for me it's mainly the opposite. When I win, it's because I deserved it so much! I'm still training, watching tons of videos because I would like to develop a solid Xiaoyu, but I don't think she's as effective as lots of people say. I've never seen her in finals of major tournaments as well. Crushing frames are not so wide (I know 2 moves in phenix stance but it's very narrow I guess, I should develop these ones) and rolls don't crush so much too. People say she's offensive, but her strong and useful movements are only counter hits ([4+3], ff+2, 1+2 while phenix, 4 while stepping, d+1 while phenix, 2 while crouch to stand up, d+4 while backward stance, etc.), so you can't just attack again and again as she's so punishable... Even basic strings (like 1,2,1, u+1+2,2,1, f+3,1,1+2) can be blocked after 2 hits whereas other characters destroy you if you're hit once in the string. I keep faith but I can't agree she's so easy. I met the second Xiaoyu ever in my experience, and I could break this guy so easily because I know when and where to hit because he was so predictable. Other people are feeling probably the same against me! If you have pieces of advice, I'll be glad to read them :)
TMM might get a lot of hate, but he has done a lot of well put together videos like this. He has brought many new players to get more interested in tekken.

Thanks for the video, this helped me think of a lot of things in a different way. I'm learning Kazuya; he's hard as shit but I'm not giving up yet!
Great video , It is very good that someone explains the really important things to the players.
Goddamn it, I was about to sleep ffs ._.
Interesting vid, good sir 👍
Stop using the word 'god' as a cuss word.
@@errolisaac8069 what a weird thing to say lol
@@errolisaac8069 God damn, you're right.
Very valueable information in this video, still a must watch!
Another thing that's good about it is that your opponent adapts quicker which forces you to do the same.
love mainman swe everyvideo u are the mainman who bring me to tekken(from 2011) becoming a mishima player thank you
Its important to note that tekken is all about adapting and "going with with the flow." Learning the opponent's playstyle and countering accordingly but some players don't have a pattern or playstyle.
The Real Vandenreich yeah budget blue ranks just tend to ignore tekken gameplay and go for the goofiest shit like hopkick on frame disadvantage
This is soooo good. Thanks so much for this. Your channel is awesome and informative.
I just got 2 wins and now at 3rd Dan, nearly light blue with Paul. your vid must have helped. I am really happy to be winning.
Jacob Walsh keep it up dude
marauder feng. Although I do love Fengs movelist :D Thank you.
dragunov and jack's line were above the screen on the inprovement lineup, thats why we didn't see them
This video was helpful to me. Even at orange rank. I feel that everyone can still learn more and i appreciate it
Always eat a well balanced meal b4 playing tekken
ie. masterbate first.
Yooooo i thought i was the only one.. deadass if your hungry before playing tekken shit makes me play 10x worse
@@user-kg6lf1op2l im a 3rd dan taking out fujins and mighty rulers with bryan fury and paul all day long
I watched the whole video and most of these are my problem, I'm currently stuck between maruder and fighter gonna play some tekken today and see if I can change my had habits, good video earned a sub :)
I'm actually promoting rn thanks, this video helped a bunch, tack så mycket
Nice vid bro
Your vid will help us a lot to learn this game.
And yes I'm still newbie but I'm a big fan of this game and your mishima lol.
Very informative, i agree.
Gem of a video for all Tekken players. Hats off to TMM.
Great Video ! This will help alot of Players if they keep theese advices in mind.
As a Kazuya main, I can understand this.
DottierDig 95
I used to play Kazuya in the past. What do you do in that case?
kaka cech, with kazuya, I use 2,2 to punish -15 stuff, but if you are good enough, you could do the electric wind god fist.
Paul players should feel embarrassed.
kaka cech kazuya is kinda hard but have you tried playing lei or hwaorang?
Best work yet! Do more videos like this.
Dragonov has more then 2 moves?
I think there's a huge distinction to be made in the "doing things while not thinking" category.
If you just go out and do the same moves in a certain order over and over, it's bad but if you can mix playing by instinct with calculation / knowing how to adapt then you're really good. What I mean is: if you can stop reminding yourself how you should react to certain moves and if you can just "do it", you got skills.
That "hopkick" almost killed me
I laughed too hard XDDD
Shiro Tsuki I hate fighting eddy and im a eddy player xD but im not who just spams his gimmick moves I actually learned him pretty well
Same.
Also, you can duck the second hit of B2,2 and punish.
QQ
This is great cus I tried to be a Steve and hworang player in tekken 4 then I gave up after a couple year I never understood frame rate and how movement is key I had bad execution until I picked back up tekken 7 now I’m picking up devil Jin quickly
3 years ago, Asuka didn't do well in tournaments. Nowadays, I see more and more doing decent recents, I could point to Fergus for example who is a killer with her. I love when a game evolves, especially because I love Asuka and Kazuya 🤣
It is good to watch a video like this after losing a lot in tekken
This video is great fundamental FG mentality stuff. However, I was expecting some of the misc. knowledge specific to the game itself- like dickjabs can be low parried, ultimate tackle is a 1+2 break (and how to reversal it), what that the hell universal uf+2 does...
ff+3 on kuma/panda works, you have to deep dash d/f+1,4 to get a combo after b+2,4, or d/f+1,4 right off the bat :)
TY TMM
This is a good fucking Tekken video! I hope to see more of those. Thanks a lot
I miss this red and white background
Great video, much thanks ❤
Really appreciate the vid - thanks!
So I just picked an unthankful and demanding character in Kazuya... I still feel most comfortable with his moveset though lol. Guess I'll keep eating dirt and improve the hard way then. No pain no gain!
Thanks man
This video helped me a lot
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍
Awesome Video MainMan!
@MainManSwlWE what separates orange level from Tekken god's?
Fight the Best to Be the Best and Beat the Rest
Learn and Improve my people
When you get salty after losing to someone's nonsense just remember that you're trying to force your own nonsense on to them. It's all fair.
Im new and have finally learned to not get salty and see it as i need to improve
Hey also checkout my guide to on my channel to further improve your game
Old video new to me helped a bunch. I do use kat and I heard she was nerfed but I picked her up because people are cheesy. Most ppl who are good who play ppl who are not as good, cheese. Then tell you to get good by getting beat up and never explain any of this. I was new to Tekken 7 as of 2021 lol not that I did t watch it but I didn’t even have the game. Getting my ass handed to me for hours trying to play characters that take knowledge of the game and match up knowledge gets a new player no where. I’m glad the nerfed kat, so I don’t have to hear excuses as to how I’m able to defend, counter and get off combos with a character that has easy combos vs you (whoever) who have been playing for years
Very well put together thanks.
Do yourself a favor and play this at 1.5 speed.
More like, 1.25 speed.
More like 2 speed if you are already familiar with the tekken concepts.
One thank you so much! Jeeze😁
What up Main Man. Nice vid bro.
Great video dude!
TMM might get a lot of hate, but he has done a lot of well put together videos like this. He has brought many new players to get more interested in tekken.
I'm sorry, but in this day and age, this reminds me of a powerpoint presentation that someone would present in class (probably me)
