- Matt's Countach has a triage plan (sort of); we review the new Aston Martin DB12 Volante (and compare it to the competition from Bentley, Italy, and Mercedes);
Patreon questions include:
Used Focus RS or new GR Corolla?
Why Taycan brakes feel weird
To jump from new Ioniq 5 to used Taycan
Do EVs have a floor?
Which state has the best Mexican food?
A very interesting question about gamifying EV ownership.
And more!

It's gonna be realll interesting to hear another mechanic's second opinion on the Countach rebuild. Like whether a full rebuild was even necessary.
I was thinking the same thing. He seems so sure it needs a rebuild, but my impression from the video where they "figured that out" was that it probably didn't. Of course, I have no real idea as I haven't looked at the motor... but... I'd bet whoever takes it says it doesn't need it.
Donnie was great at spending other people's money.
I always got the feeling Matt was getting fleeced
I would get the Countach assembled and running, then sent to a body shop. Once you start breaking a project up between multiple vendors at the same time, you end up with a never ending time line for completion.
And varying degrees of workmanship
I agree that he should get the car back together, the problem is that the paint is original other than the localised repair it's better than over restoring it as many have been in their life. You are also looking at a very expensive car to repaint as it's an aluminium skin over a tubular birdcage, with fibreglass parts. You end up in Paint prison with these as it's all made to that car. There are some upgrades you can do, such as a cover over the electronics, wiring and heat insulation. But the car was a high calibre before it went to Donnie
I liked the musical background consisted by this very distinct wood percussion instrument.
Are blowhards considered woodwinds?
I believe hoovie had to replace the expansion tank on his Bentley R and the wizard found that it was the same as another car and used that part because it was cheaper then the Bentley version.
Hoovie also recently did a video recently where he bought a convertible Evoque and he said that they have a following and haven’t gone below a certain price.
They already built the last Chrysler 300 a month or two ago.
Honda just gives you 2 key fobs, and when the car is unlocked the memory seats adjust to the driver 1 or 2 position depending on if it detects driver 1 or driver 2 key fob.
that's cool. my honda is from 2003 and I did not know they had this now
I half expected the list of options/ offers for the Countach rebuild to conclude with a guy in Florida named Freddie. It'd be a hell of a TH-cam crossover, though I realize it would mean doing exactly what Matt doesn't want to do. Having the car dispersed to several locations for the different parts of the project.
The Porsche Experience Center tracks are very different. PECATL has two different tracks now and a joint program that happens once a month where you can run both of them together. Yes the modules, off-road, kick plate and auto cross are similar, PECATL also has an ice hill now.
The Karussell is built into the new track along with a version of the corkscrew!
12:36 lane keep assist is conditional
for me 🤷♂️ Hate it on backroads. Love it on freeways paired with radar cruise.
I just did the track day Toyota gives you for buying the GR Corolla and I have no issues with my diff overheating and I don’t think any other corollas that were there had it either.
As a restorer of mainly 50's and 60's cars... where needed we use NOS tires where possible, with original rims, and use then solely for display. Even original bulbs shouldnt be used, even for day only driven cars...so many sacrifices in safety to use on the street
Lanekeep assist can surly be shut off with a sticker over the sensor. Not a fan of that stuff after it tried to drive into a construction site.
I had a Pacifica PHEV AWD rental in Estes Park, CO last year. It had 37 miles...total. Even the plastic was still on the visor mirrors. Can confirm it was very, very nice inside.
If the dude doesn’t want to pay 40k for a GRC he should look at the Kona N used or a new Elantra N if he’s looking at the Focus.
Kona N is automatic only, no manual option
Or Veloster N since it's a hatchback
Canepa has had Zuckerman’s Daytona for I believe 7 years. So long that it’s actually done now, but Z is so mentally removed from the car he just wants it sold. It’s listed on the site now
Do a segment on both of your' favorite live concerts.
Brilliant pod once again gents, peace from Australia
The answer to the Lambo question is Iain Tyrell
yea thats cheaper than Ohio.....
With you on the Pacifica. We've rented Dodge Caravans for decades in Florida, Got a Pacifica and it's a genuinely good vehicle. A world class offering in my opinion. Was really impressed, And it did better highway mpg than my 1.6 Kia daily 😂
ngl i had to click this to figure wtf yall meant by EV Pokemon
Eevee
Interesting point about the Mercedes top. I did always think that press cars came with a cheat sheet or someone ran you through some features when they dropped it off. But I guess its better this way, as not to bias your experience.
58:48 is this issue with Taycan brakes the same with the Audi e-tron GT?
I watched Mr JWW's video on the new DBX 707 and they have a hard button for the lane keep assist. So they definitely could have put that same button in the DB12.
The dbx uses Mercedes tech. The new db12 no longer uses the older Mercedes tech
@@Themayseffect no this is the brand new one coming out soon, it's the same tech as the db12.
Zack. Midas toooooo funny. Could u imagine
is that a screened in porch?
Look at Nissan Leafs, the floor is like $1500 haha. You can buy one and chuck another battery in them and have a great car for like $6000.
HATE the lane keep assist on my 2020 Outback. I've driven cars with good lane keep assist (the rental kia forte I had once, for example, was very good), Subaru's sucks. Bounces you from lane line to lane line like a game of pong. I also hate the driver attention monitors that beep at you constantly. That one I have to turn off every time I restart the car. But I made a shortcut in the menu to get me there quicker. I've also turned off the beeping function when I cross a lane line...it was always going off when it shouldn't. That I don't have to turn off every time, but I do have to live with a bright orange warning light that is the same color and brightness of a check engine light all the time.
RE: Focus RS question, get the RS, spend the $ for the KW suspension and 18" wheels/tires. Ride fixed, see Matt's video of the mods he did on his.
The db12 looks so much better as a convertible.
That age old game of "what's that smell and how much will it cost" 😂
It's Carroll's 11th wife's recipe. And, no, she's definitely not collecting any royalties.
can't wait for the sam and wayne episodes
Dugan Enterprises restored my downdraft. Mechanical and body. Call Chris.
I’m probably too late on this but you should ask Wayne about original tires and value. I’ve seen some of these pebble beach 60’s cars with original tires and it being a big deal for these kinds of shows
Totally agree with you on the 11’ GT500 though. Original tires are a hazard and I would assume it would cost me more to buy it since I would have to buy new tires right away.
Some sorbothane discs under the mic will mitigate the table thumps
Low country representing! 🤙
guys, isolate the microphone from the table surface with some foam rubber or similar. Please! 🙂
May I ask why? I don’t notice bad sound quality
Chill it's just a podcast about buying 1999 Toyota MR2s
This must have been so difficult for you.
I feel for your ears bro. Your hearing must feel like a super power and a curse at the same time 😂
love that small tea table sort of thing behind you, can you tell us what is it made of and where do you get that? btw you should trademark jiggliness😂
thanks.
Sound quality is great, the remote mic works great. But please! Glue some furniture pads to the bottom of it or put like a hoodie underneath the stand so that we don't hear the table. This has been a thing for every remote pod you guys have done for years and it's brutal
Remember that engine is not the easiest to install and needs special hoist.
You can use a 2 post ramp, a fwd engine support brace that you bolt/strap to the pads. You reverse the car into your work bay and the hard part is pivoting it.
This guy is suggesting video game monetization mechanics for cars. You for sure do not want this. Imagine battle passes for cars, BMW heated seat micro transactions were already bad enough.
blue yeti mic has to be the worst for picking up vibrations. it literally needs to be on a separate table or stand.
Setting it on a book with a folded towel underneath it will help: poor man's shock mount.
She will get zippo from Twitter. Now the lawyer will make out great.
On gamify-ing cars. Not even gamers like the rewards for achievements. Feels too DLC. We just like the achievements. Rewards are for things like beating the hardest boss in the game. Things, like Steam Achievements, people like to get because they're fun, not because they're incentivized to. I wouldn't offer a reward for doing something specific in a car (doesn't have to be EV with today's tech). "Spared from Carmageddon: Experience the 405 without traffic" kinda achievements
LOL @thesmokingtire turns out that Zuckermans Daytona is finally done, and now he's selling it....
CYBER MATT
I don't watch every show, but I do come to see if this comment gets posted. You didn't disappoint.
Commuter cars costs people money. A EV is no worse owning outside of warranty. There are far less components to fail on them. If you consider all components you have had fail in your car life and why they failed and think about whether or not they exist in an EV or not you will realize how much you don’t need to worry about. A car that runs cheap never loses all value. Talking about the rest of the world here, not so-cal. Ukraine is buying up all the early EVs in Norway, apparently easier to get electric power than gas in a war ridden country.
I don’t understand how Matt is so blind to the hypocrisy in his environmental arguments. He is not interested with people driving for no reason due to excess pollution and road surface wear, yet acts like that isn’t the exact argument against the performance cars he enjoys so much. He should be a champion for driving for any reason, instead of only approving leisure driving for himself or those in sports cars…
Commuting so out weighs pleasure driving that making efficiency and demand-reducing measures in that area will both do the most good, and thereby help to make pleasure driving more sustainable for longer. They will come for sports cars and classics, unless we can convince them to make greater gains with mass transit, walkable urban planning and electrification where it makes sense. In that scenario we can afford the recreational use of fossil fuels and preserve our hobby for longer. Otherwise, we get shafted by politicians looking for low hanging fruit and a headline.
Edit: but I actually agree with you on this specific point. Going for a cruise for no reason or taking the long way in your daily is pleasure driving to be protected for those that want to do it.
The Chrysler Town and Country cost more than two base model Voyagers in the same model year.

donnie really fucked matt when he was least needing it. i felt sick when he was rippping out the emissions stuff. worse now that we know he wasnt a mechanic
Does anyone like lane keep assist? I drive a lot of different cars, they are almost all extremely annoying
When I was driving in Utah and Nevada I had rental cars (base model Mercedes and Kia Forte) that both had good lane keep assist and was good for long boring straight stretches. The lane keep on my Outback on the other hand is terrible, genuinely terrible.
Surely by now they might remember not to keep hitting the table 🙄
My Porsche, it’s right next to the shifter, BANG!
Or just isolate the microphone with some foam pads…
Just like everybody had a black box in the 80s for their cable TV, someone is going to create a black box for newer cars to disable all the crap that is being forced on to everyone. The first thing I suggest everyone does if they buy a newer car is to rip out that cars internet capabilities. Unless you don't mind your car reporting all the telematics to your insurance company, go ahead and let it do its thing. Just don't get mad when your insurance premiums go up or your insurance company decides to drop your insurance altogether. Personally, I will never own a newer car than my 2011 Lexus IS F. That is the last and only car I will ever drive again. You would be a sucker to buy anything made after 2020 because it's total garbage made to only last the life of the warranty. Cars made after the year 2020 are not your friends like older cars are. They will spy on you and try to drive for you and they will nag you and they will all start having tons of electronic problems that will never end and will cost you a small fortune just to diagnose and repair. That's not what I agreed to but nobody in this country fights back anymore. they just accept this shit so good luck with that.
Maximum ADAS on a Tesla would be FSD on.
Its a patio table not in a studio. Get over it...
Totally disagree with the EV warranty insistence. Had BMW i3 5 years with no faults at all. How does Matt reason being happy to own an ICE with 100s of moving parts we all know fail and leak but wont touch an EV with nothing much to fail and batteries lasting far longer than anyone expected (and media misinformation). This very podcast (Ali Javidan episode) told Matt this.
All humans have their own bias. Matt is in fact human.
There is a difference in liquid cooled batteries and non cooled batteries to. A cooled battery will live longer. My e-golf has no cooling and has done 151000 miles without any issues. A new battery is out of the question, I would sell my old battery and get a less used one.
Thanks for that pointless anecdote
Perhaps wild card would be letting Freddy Tavarish have a go on a Lambo putting together project.. IT might be interesting distraction from P1 project and he did recently those couple day to finish projects... I would watch it for sure
Freddy is an entertainer, a TV show to inspire people. Matt has already taken a hit financially having a guy learn on his car trying to balance this out with making it a business write off by filming it. Doing this mistake twice would not add value to a person buying this. If the workmanship is so good you would not need to make a TH-cam show to subsidise it.
@@fraserwright9482 That is the point... Matt and Freddy are entertainers so I would like to be entertained :D... I am sure Matt would be able to made video out of it as colab with Freddy and offset his lost that way. I am not sure how people would react on his main channel on different style of video, but given the intricate story of the car, this might be cool opportunity to made "lemonade" out of the situation. I am not sure if Freddy would be able to do it though... And please bare in mind this is just funny "wild card" type of idea for entertaining colab of two guys I enjoy watching. I am sure Matt has an idea what to do with a car and for sure he can do whatever he wish to do. Nevertheless...
Sure, I can understand the business pitch of doing this. Matt gets to write the expenses off as a company car, Freddy gets to ride the wave of TH-cam Lambo SOE and hey let's do a SEMA build of it! But you also have the reality of how other people perceive it. If Matt has this rebuilt at Beverley Hills Lambo then whoever he sells it to has to pay for that too. If you get stuff done on the cheap (like he did when he bought the car with the service included in the sale and with the Donnie decision) then that carries on thru to the next person or yourself as in this case.
cry me a river
What happened to Donnie?
dude got arrested for allegedly putting a mechanic's lien on cars and reselling them. seems like it's kind of up in the air as of now if he was actually acting fraudulently
Matt needs to learn how to wrench in his cars. It's a key point to really understand about cars mechanically. We also would start to listening more about powertools than expensive wrist watches.
Matt has never turned a wrench in his life and he makes it obvious he doesn’t want to. He’s a bought not built type of guy.
