    More details about this video:
De Quervain's syndrome is an irritation of the thumb tendons from repetitive movements. Over the last decade, texting has become more popular, and people are having more of these symptoms. Some have even termed it Blackberry thumb.
It is just as important to stretch the wrist as well as the tendons of the thumb. We will start by stretching your thumb tendons. Take your thumb and cross it over to your pinky finger; bring it back. Now touch it to each finger, returning it to the starting position each time. Next, take your thumb and place it over your pinky finger pressing it to your palm. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat 3 times.
Now it's time to stretch your wrist. Go gently first, bend your wrist down into flexion. Then bend your wrist up into extension. You can use your other hand for some overpressure if you need more of a stretch. Hold each for 30 seconds and do 3 each way.
For the strengthening you can use a can of soup or vegetables. Hold the can and bend your wrist up and down (flexion and extension), then turn your wrist so your thumb is facing up, and go up and down (radial deviation and ulnar deviation). Try 10 each way, and then work your way up as you get stronger.
Take a rubber band and put it around all of your fingers. You can push just your thumb outwards or all of your fingers outwards. Again, start with 10 and then work your way up. Finally take a small ball like a tennis ball or racquet ball, and squeeze it 10 times.

Dr. Jo I recently had a cortisone shot for trigger thumb and my thumb is so much better....for now. Is there something I can do to prevent it from coming back. My insurance will not agree to doing the trigger release surgery. I had this for two months before getting the shot.

Hi. I’m a Subscriber. Why might these exercises, done gently, hurt at the ulnar side of wrist? There seem to be several areas of wrist pain which have come on suddenly- no injury, no overuse (wrong dominant hand). Thank you 🙂

Unfortunately, that could be for a number of reasons, so I don't know since I can't evaluate you. It could coming from somewhere higher up like the elbow, shoulder, or neck.

Totally amazing...I am a musician who has been suffering for over 5 months with pain in both my thumb joints and couldn't figure out why since it came on suddenly and I have been playing for over 50 years. I had tried various things with little or no improvement and was resigned to the fact that I was going to have to suffer the pain and misery indefinitely. Then I came across this video and decided to try the exercises although I was very skeptical at first. I could really feel the stretches in the first 2 exercises and it was obvious that something different was going on. In just 24 hours the difference was incredible and although there is still some way to go I am continuing to notice a dramatic improvement on a daily basis. Thank you so much...I can't tell you how happy and relieved I am thanks to you!

Dr. Jo, I can't thank you enough. I've been dealing with the pain in my thumb and an almost complete loss of strength for like 5+ months. I tried the one stretch where you touch your thumb to the pinky and hold it. AMAZING. Two days of doing that as instructed, and it is almost completely cleared up. Now to strengthen!

Thank you so much. Twenty months ago I was having terrible pain, and it had reached the stage where I couldn't even hold a pen, let along dress/undress myself, cook, etc. A local physio said the only treatment was strapping up my wrists, doing nothing, and even then it might not work. This video was a turning point! It gave me hope, but it also brought relief. In fact, the exercises worked so well I stopped doing them.
Sadly, the problem has returned, but I have recognised at a very early stage, and I have started doing the exercises again. Even after 3 days I can feel the benefit! You are rather brilliant. Thank you!

Thank you for this video. I had a fast-onset hand arthritis 4 months ago (after taking Baclofen), & along with it came DQS in both wrists & thumbs. I am doing exercises, plus using rubber bands to hold my thumbs closer to my fingers during the day. Taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin. Hopefully we all can get better soon. Thoughts & prayers for all!!

I went to the doctor the second day I felt pain because I had suffered other kinds of tendinitis before and they became chronic as I failed to seek out treatment on time. I spent a bunch of money going to the doctor and they ended up telling me to get kinesiology treatment. Since I can't afford that right now, this is truly helpful. I'm only unable to lift heavy objects (cup of tea and up) right now, pain's not that bad. I mainly feel tense. I'm just really eager to get back on track with my side job as an illustrator.
Anyway thank you so much for this video!

THANK YOU Dr. Jo!!! Congrats on your 100,000 subscribers, and I sent you some of those. I went indoor rock climbing a couple of years ago, stayed 2 hours each time for 3 total trips, then several months later got this De Quervain's. I'm not a gamer or big texter, but I think this may become prevalent with rookie rock climbers like me. Your stretches are the ones I do daily...THANKS again and God Bless You!

I got this syndrome from riding a motorcycle. I've had this issue come and go for a year now. ( Never truly going away ). Last week, I couldn't touch my thumb to my pinky. After watching this, I have been trying the suggestions and I can see great improvement. I hope to be able to get back to motorcycling soon. My Ortho, never suggested these, just gave me a shot and told me to come back in 6 weeks. The shot helped, but not like these stretches. Thanks so much...best of all, no co-pay to watch the video. Thank you for this video Dr. Jo! I have a 4 month old and I'm a full time cosmetologist so it is hard to rest my thumb. I've tried wraps but pressure to the area really hurts. I wake up or have moments in the day where my thumb gets locked open or the constant clicking, so I've been trying to find an alternative to surgery until I'm done nursing. Many times I can hardly even move my thumb inward to preform the finkelstein. So thank you I'm hoping these stretches will help some.

I have neck and back issues as well. I can only sleep on my back, otherwise my hands go numb. My last Dr. visit wasn't very thorough. She just prescribed the anti-inflammatory per my request. No testing of any kind. I need to see a specialist I guess.

Yes, I know. I've been on an anti-inflammatory for months. Thought it was tendonitis or my carpal tunnel. I can't even brush my teeth or wash my hair without pain. Going to a Dr. soon!! Your video was helpful. I've never even heard of this.

I thank for this awesome video. The hand outs my doctor gave me were not easily understandable so I was struggling. Can you tell me anything about what I can do with pain on the top middle of my foot? I have been told I have arthritis, but the pain is often felt on top of my foot not in the joints. Any help will be gratefully received.

Subscribed. Dr. Jo Thank you for the excellent video. I recently got diagnosed with De Quarvain’s and had 2 steroid shot 3 month apart. Ever since my steroid shots (last one in Jan, 21), I have been having so much more pain and now the pain is at entire wrist. Do you think I should get another steroid shot or trying to strengthening and stretching exercises? Thank you.

I've had recurrent tendonitis in both wrists off and on for about 4-5 years. I've had the maximum number of cortisone shots that I'm allowed in both wrists. Surgery was on my to-do list, but I've heard the recovery can be quite long. I'm set to start working full-time in June in a position with high repetitive movements involving my wrists. I'm going to try these exercises first though. I hope they work for me!
